In this episode of A Changed Mind, David Bayer examines miracles through the lens of neuroscience.

Christ performed them and then told us we would do greater. Yogananda documented the same abilities in the Himalayas less than a hundred years ago. The question worth asking is not whether it happened, but what mechanism inside a human being makes it possible.

Reality is not what your senses report. Your brain holds a fixed version of it together through the default mode network, built since birth out of everyone else’s beliefs, and it can be taken offline.

By the end you will understand why your nervous system may be the portal, and what it would take to raise your limit.

“Your thoughts and your emotions are vibrational phenomena that occur within your nervous system. We begin to calibrate the reality around us through our presence, through our state of being, which is the collective sum total of what we believe, what we think, and what we feel.”
“Miracles, perhaps, are a byproduct of unbroken conviction.”
“None of this is new age or requires a leap of faith. That’s why I say your nervous system is a portal to miracles. The only question is, what’s your limit? And my offering to you is that there may be no limit at all.”

POWERFUL LIVING EXPERIENCE

Transcripts

David:

What if there is more to your capacity to create miracles than you've been taught to believe? And the place to begin understanding it is your own brain. Now, when something happens that we can't explain, we call it a miracle. But that word leaves us with an outstanding question. How did this happen? And if you've ever experienced a coincidence that felt too precise to be random, or you watched something that you thought was impossible suddenly become possible, you've probably wondered, how did this happen? Well, or is there something happening that I don't yet understand? So in this episode, we're going to explore miracles through the lens of neuroscience. What we know about the brain, how it shapes our experience, and whether we can develop a greater capacity to invite the extraordinary into our own lives. So let's get into it.

Welcome to A Changed Mind, a journey into the topics that matter to you most. From the neuroscience and spirituality of mindset and personal growth, to groundbreaking strategies for health, wealth, and relationships, to open and honest conversations about pressing global issues such as the environment, censorship, corporate capture, and democracy. Each and every episode reminds us of the certainty of the goodness of the future and provides the teachings, tools, and timeless wisdom inspiring you to create real, lasting change in your life and in the world. If you've been desiring a sanctuary for your spirit, a place to go to tune out the distraction, negativity, and doom and gloom so that you can tap into the deep power, the vibrancy, and the potential you have inside, you're in the right place. Welcome to a changed mind.

All right, guys, I think it's appropriate to start this conversation. A couple of thousand years ago, there was a guy supposedly by the name of Jesus Christ, who was documented as having performed miracles. He healed the sick. He was able to feed 5,000 people from a loaf of bread and a single fish. He was able to know his own future. He walked on water. He raised himself from the dead. He defied material reality. So one important question is, how did he perform these miracles? And then on top of that, why were we told by him that we would perform miracles even greater than he did? I think this is a question worth exploring. I hear a lot in the Christian world about Christ, a lot about him dying for our sins, but I don't hear a lot of conversations around this kind of one liner he dropped in the middle of his gospel, which was, oh, you can actually do things greater than I am showing you you can do. Can you imagine for a moment if you could develop a practice to build mastery around intentional miracle making? Now, these documented miracles were not exclusive to Christ. There were other saints, from Mother Teresa to Pope St. John Paul II to yogis from the east and miracle healers in South America like John of God, that have all been documented. And as I started exploring miracle making, because I would like to intentionally manifest and create miracles in my own life, what really challenged my thinking was a book called Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. Okay. This is one of the books that had a great influence on my spiritual development. Paramahansa Yogananda was a saint who lived most of his life in the 20th century. So what's interesting about this is this. Not thousands of years ago, this is from less than 100 years ago, he wrote his own autobiography. And in it, he talks about looking for his guru. And as he was looking for his teacher, he ran into a bunch of other gurus who lived in the Himalayas and in really remote places who had developed the capacity to do things like levitate or to be in two places at once to move things with their mind. Telekinesis, right, to manipulate, just as Christ is documented to have done material reality. In fact, his teacher, Sri Yukteswar, does a couple of things over the course of Yogananda's autobiography. One is he manipulates the weather in order to make it nice weather for an event that was particularly important to him. And there's actually an interesting story where he's able to influence, basically, mind control. A wandering peasant to teach Yogananda a lesson by sneaking in the Yogananda's dorm room and stealing his cabbages. So CS Lewis has this thing around Christ that he calls liar, Lunatic Lord. And he basically says, like, look, you have to make a decision. Do you think Jesus Christ was a liar? Do you think he was crazy? Or do you think he was who he says he was? And I think the same thing applies to Yogananda, you know, and, uh, I don't think he was lying, and I don't think he was crazy. I think he was actually witnessing what he claims he was witnessing. So let's unpack this for a little bit. How might it be possible to manipulate the material world? And what is the influencing mechanism that is inside of us that does the influencing? For this, I'd like to turn to something Einstein once said, which is, reality is an illusion, albeit a persistent one. And what he meant is, the reality is not how it represents itself. The physical world, the material reality, is interpreted by our five senses. And science tells us this, Neuroscience tells us this. What we're experiencing Is not what is actually there. And a way to think about this is we experience a very physical, sensory, fixed, material reality. But it's actually much more vibrational. Like, if we look at any physical thing in the world. The device that you're listening to this episode on. It's made up of, uh, molecules. Those molecules are made up of atoms. Those atoms have parts like the nucleus of an atom. With neutrons and protons and electrons that are orbiting around this nucleus. But as we continue to look at the smaller and smaller and smaller, smaller pieces we start moving into. Let's describe it as the quantum world. And what we see is that what is actually there is not always there. There's a probability of the material reality being there. And it's a little bit more like a shimmering, fluctuating field of energy. That our five senses interpret into what we see or what we hear or what we smell. Now, a human being, more specifically the brain and the nervous system. Is constantly vibrating. So you are an electrical, mechanical organism. That is putting off a frequency. It's transmitting a frequency. Just like a light bulb transmits light. Or a coil might transmit some sort of frequency or vibration. We're constantly vibing. And so how do we vibe? We vibe according to how we think and how we feel. Your thoughts and your emotions are vibrational phenomenon that occur within your nervous system. And that has an interaction or an impact on this vibrational reality around us. We begin to calibrate the reality around us. Through our presence, through our state of being. Which is the collective sum total of what we believe, of what we think and what we feel. That's our transmission. And so, on one level, this is how we create coincidences and synchronicities. This is how when you think about somebody. They have a subconscious impulse to call you or you think about somebody. And over there, in their own reality. They've had a series of subconscious decisions that they've made. So that they arrive at the same restaurant or grocery store that you're at. And you run into them. Or this is how a desperately needed resource. I'm sure there's been a time in your life. Where, like, you needed a thing really, really bad and the thing shows up. That's because we are all a part of and connected to this field of consciousness or this field of vibration. And we are sending out a communication across this field. And it is being received by everyone and everything that is also the field. And the field is responding. And you are also responding at subconscious levels. To other people's influence. And so you were a part of the rendezvous and synchronicities that they create in their life. You know, years ago, and I've talked about this on other episodes. I was at a speaker training for the world's greatest inspirational speaker, a guy by the name of Les Brown. And, and I tell the story of how one morning I was really stressed out and I was looking for something to uplift my spirits and I found some daily Bible quotes. And I thought to myself, you know, wouldn't it be nice if there was a way that based on how I was feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, I could find a corresponding Bible verse to lift up my spirits? And I'm at this training. Unless Brown is telling the story. It's my favorite story that he tells. And at the end of the story, he reaches into the nightstand and grabs a Gideon's Bible. But I had no idea what a Gideon's Bible was. Well, on the way home, on a three hour trip back to my house, I end up blowing out a tire on my car, rolling into a gas station, I'm waiting for AAA to come and change my tire and an older gentleman walks over to me, mistaking my identity, starting a conversation with me. And as he walks away, he says, by the way, do you own a Gideon's Bible? I said, no, I don't. And he said, well, that's not why I walked over here, but I just have an inspiration to give you one. So he walks back to his car, he comes back, he hands me Gideon's Bible and I says, do you know how this Gideon's Bible works? It was a little small pocket Bible. And I said, no, I don't. And he said, well, it's got a table of contents. And so depending on how you're feeling, stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, you can find a corresponding verse in the Bible to uplift your spirits. That was a miracle. I don't know how the miracle was created, but when I actually look back, part of that miracle making was me saying, hey, wouldn't it be nice if there was this thing and it was already in my awareness without me knowing about it, because it was part of my. The favorite story that Les Brown tells that I got to hear in person. And then through a series of man, probably hundreds of coincidences, this thing that I had asked for shows up in my hand. So how did that happen? Through frequency, through transmission, through thoughts, through emotions, through subconscious influence of both myself and other people and this gentleman and by also being non resistant to it. This was not a thing where I'm like, oh man, I Wish I really had this thing. And so it turned from a want into a need. It was like a wouldn't it be nice? And it showed up. So if we really look at what's happening there, my thoughts, my emotions, my decisions, my perception, my nervous system was the portal for a miracle happening. Now. Let's take this a step further because, yeah, it's one thing to have an amazing story that defies all logic and rationale as to how this thing that was already in my awareness that Les Brown was speaking about, that I had a subconscious desire for, showed up at a gas station hours later. That's a little bit different than walking on water and raising the dead, don't you think? So let's take this a little bit further. What if you could develop the capacity to actually stop all thought to prevent your senses from even interpreting reality so that you didn't buy into reality in the way that the brain is enrolling us into reality? I'm going to repeat that. What if there was a way that you could actually pause and insert yourself in between the interpretation of this fluctuating field, which is what your brain does to keep you grounded in reality, and that vibrational field of potential itself? What if you could go, uh, I'm not even sure I buy into what my senses are. Ah, Telling me, even in the microsecond, that it takes to translate reality through your senses, to slow down so much that you can actually see behind the manifested illusion. Remember Neo in the Matrix? Like there were times where he could see all the zeros and ones. Is it possible that people like Christ and the saints and the yogis could develop themselves in such a way that they could actually have an opinion about whether or not they agree on the material reality and then insert their influence at the field level to manipulate the physical reality? That's the question. Now, what's interesting is Yogananda taught a practice called Kriya Yoga that was designed by. To slow your thoughts down so much and to withdraw your senses from the physical reality that you could accomplish exactly this. What I'm saying is, is what I'm suggesting might be possible is exactly the practice that Yogananda taught through Kriya Yoga. This was the ancient secret of the yogis. It had to be passed down from yogi to yogi to yogi. And what was so special about Paramahansa Yogananda was he actually introduced this practice to the West. Now we know, as we study Christ, he was involved in some sort of practice like this, too. Christ would withdraw and Develop himself. You know, we don't really know what happened between Christ as baby Christ and the Jesus, the Christ who showed up at 33 years of age. I don't think it's an unrealistic assumption to say somewhere along the way he developed a practice. And it would not be surprising if the practice that he developed was the same practice that allowed Yogananda and all of the yogis to perform miracles. And that is that they could control their minds in such a way that they effectively no longer bought into or reacted to the material reality, but instead they could imagine reality and could broadcast their intention and their vision for what was so powerfully and unwaveringly that reality conformed to their intention. You don't have to look really far to see that Christ was guiding us in this direction. In fact, he was pretty explicit about it. If you just read what he said, be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. It's right there. It's in the instruction book. So let's look at what happens to us. We are born into a fixed reality. There is a collective reality created by all of us, the collective consciousness. And from birth, we become trained into that reality. We have senses as children, but our senses are also informed. We're told by everyone else around us what is. And that starts to develop a mechanism in the brain that locks us into a fixed and agreed to reality. Okay, I'm gonna get into this in a second. It's called the Default Mode network. It's essentially a series of structures in your brain that hold together our perception of reality and hold together our personality so that we can be grounded into something. But the, the grounding into this reality is also an indoctrination and a, uh, domestication. We buy into what other people believe, and we can even see this with transgenerational belief systems. Usually, what money is for you is what money was growing up for you, which is what money was for your parents. What relationships are for you is what relationships were when you were growing up, which is how relationships were for your parents. But as we heal, we change our brains. We start to transform these limiting beliefs. We metabolize our traumas. And the good news is the brain is neuroplastic. So the brain can be retrained. So we rewire. I feel like I'm yelling at you right now. I'm not yelling at you. I'm just very, very excited. We rewire a belief around money being hard to make, and we build a new belief around money. Or life being abundant. And the byproduct of that change, that rewiring, is a reality of wealth and financial opportunity and financial abundance. And so let's just hop a rail here for a second. When people engage in ceremonial healing work, I'm going to use ayahuasca here as an example, but could be a lot of things that are referred to as, like, psychedelic work. Psilocybin, lsd, mdma, um, therapy, ketamine, whatever. I'm going to use ayahuasca here because it's the best example. If you're not familiar, it's a, uh, ceremonial T experience that has been around for thousands of years that came out of indigenous healing work in the Central and South Americas. So you take this tea, and what happens is there's an activation of a chemical called dmt, okay? And so when DMT becomes active in the body, people experience what are referred to as a hallucination or hallucinatory experience. There's another word for it called entheogenic, which is actually a better word. It means other than ordinary experience, because when we use the word hallucinations, it sort of implies that, like, what someone's experiencing is not real. But is that true? So science tells us that during DMT activation in an ayahuasca ceremony, or if you take DMT directly, or if you activate DMT in your body through extended transformational breath work, a series of systems in the brain, which are, uh, referred to as the default mode network, are temporarily shut down. Effectively, the systems of the brain that hold conscious reality together and your personality together, that have been reinforced since birth, get turned off. And when they do, the byproduct of that is people experience an altered reality. All kinds of different things, from speaking to deceased loved ones, to having conversations with God, to seeing their future. The question is, is this a, uh, hallucination, or is it a filter coming down to experience something that is equally real as our current reality, but not normally perceived when the default mode network is on? So question is, again, is this a hallucination, or is it the byproduct of the neurological filters that structure our perception of reality? Going offline for a little while. Okay, so I want to take this one step further. Reality is an illusion. I'll be in a persistent. What if you could disbelieve in reality so strongly that you could take down these filters on your own? You didn't need ayahuasca. You could just disbelieve in reality by learning how to withdraw your senses that are addicted to reality and to Be able to choose reality. What if you could disbelieve as well, in someone else's reality, someone's illness, and believe in their well being so much in such a determined way that your perspective overcame their belief in their illness? And the byproduct of that was instant healing. Is this how Christ performed miracles? He disbelieved in the reality. That was so much more than someone's belief in the reality that was that his reality became the predominant reality and. And the material reality changed for everyone around him, the byproduct of which in this case was healing. Note that Christ asked in almost every instance, do you believe in me? And when they said, yes, I, uh, believe in you. His commands were simple. Get up and walk. He raised Lazarus from the dead. What did he say? Come forth, Lazarus. Simple commands that commanded reality. Very much like God in Genesis. Let there be light. And there was. So miracles, perhaps, are a byproduct of unbroken conviction. Does that mean that you can fly? I don't know. Ask the yogis who were witnessed to have levitated. Now you say, all right, Dave, that's fine, but why don't they do it publicly? You'd have to ask the yogis or the saints or whoever's performing miracles. But maybe it is because other people's doubt can influence their ability to perform. Maybe if Christ said to somebody, do you believe? And they said no. And he'd be like, well, I can't help you. But because you do believe and you're open to it, I can come in with my super consciousness and manipulate reality. Perhaps that's what made Christ the greatest miracle maker of all, is his public spectacle. In any case, whether we're talking about walking on water or miracle healings or the miracle of transforming your life from one of scarcity and striving to one of abundance and ease, it is clear we have a significant influence on our reality. It's clear that when we change our mind, we change our brains. And as we do, that neuroplasticity reorganizes our nervous system. And it is a fact that our brain and our nervous system are vibrationally interactive with the reality around us. Right? None of this is new age or requires a leap of faith. That's why I say your nervous system is a portal to miracles. The only question is, what's your limit? And my offering to you is that there may be no limit at all. If you decide to take up the challenge, you may create miracles even greater than the greatest miracle maker of all time.
