Shownotes
The doctrine of configurations. Aspects are the geometric patterns formed between planets along the ecliptic — in Hellenistic astrology they were called Vision, the planets bearing witness to each other and giving testimony. Five major aspects. The conjunction is the division of the circle by one — unity, merged energies, planets acting as one, the closer together the more potent the blend. Three or more planets in conjunction is a stellium and a major focal point of energy. The opposition is the division by two — duality, dialogue, the law of opposites, two energies pulled in different directions learning to integrate. If you are neglecting one planet in your opposition it will show up in the form of a person group or object that mirrors that energy back at you. The Trine is the division by three — harmony, flow, natural talent, the Holy Trinity, things that come easily but can make you lazy if unchallenged. The square is division by four — Mars energy, tension, blocked, restricted, but tension is what spurns action and your most successful people tend to have squares in their chart. The sextile is division by six — Venus energy, opportunity, cooperation with little effort. Applying versus separating. Orbs. The five major aspects are the language the chart speaks. Know thyself. Balance your energy.
Takeaways
- Aspects are the angular relationships between planets measured in degrees — in Hellenistic tradition called Vision because planets were understood as bearing witness to each other and giving testimony, with the nature of that testimony depending on which planets are involved, their condition, and how close the aspect is to exact.
- The opposition does not just create tension between two internal drives — it shows up in the external world as a person, group, or object that embodies the planet you are neglecting, forcing a confrontation with the energy you have been avoiding until you reclaim it and integrate both sides of the axis.
- Trines represent natural talent and easy flowing energy but they do not produce growth on their own — the most accomplished people tend to have squares in their chart because tension is what spurns action, forces adjustment, builds willpower, and initiates the maturing process that easy trines never demand.
- A Sun Moon square in the natal chart often correlates with parental conflict around the time of birth — not as a cause but as a reflection, with the parents' conflicting approaches to parenting or partnership imprinted in the chart of the child born into that dynamic, and the lesson is that the tension belongs to them not to you.
- Applying versus separating aspects and the orb of influence determine the intensity of any configuration — an applying aspect is building toward exact and carries heightened energy, a separating aspect has already peaked and is moving away, and the orb defines how far the influence extends before a planet is no longer in meaningful contact with another.
