Shownotes

Working together with others on your business is good for your well being, growth and bottom line. Don't forget that making money separates a hobby from a business.

In this week’s episode of ‘l Hate Numbers’ I share four reasons why you should work with others. This episode was inspired from building and launching our Business Growth Club. I used the word our, because it’s me and my friend and colleague Dr Joe North who went from idea to launch on this.

TLAF sums this up. TLAF, love a mnemonic, don't you, stands for

✅Team

✅Learning

✅Accountability

✅Frequency

Team

Many businesses work on their Business Growth in isolation. You staff team, whatever their motivation and talent will not be invested in your business as you are. To be fair, you should not expect them to, it’s not their business, they do not have the financial equity or ownership.

Work with others who have a similar mindset to yourself. Communication, collaboration, bouncing around ideas are great ways to learn and grow.

Learning

If you think that you know everything in business, that there's nothing more to learn, then you are wrong. Everybody has experiences to share. Everybody can learn from the successes and mistakes of others. And this all helps us and helps you in your own business development,

Accountability

Having the right people in your support network gives you a group of accountability coaches and friends. Once you've committed to something, you've told somebody you're going to do it, you’re under a bit of pressure, you're committed, but it's powerful to have a bunch of people who are in a similar situation to yourself, making you accountable.

They will encourage you., keep you on track, and ask you questions. It may sound like being in school where you are expected to hand in your homework. But it's all there done in terms of making you move your business, going forward. Accountability also makes you more responsible.

Frequency

Having a regular catch up with your group reminds of what your commitments are. You are reminded of what your tasks are, what you must do. This frequency of meeting up is a great opportunity to reflect on where your progress is taking you. How you are doing against the objectives you’ve set yourself. Make small adjustments if you need to.

Business owners work in isolation. Working together on your business includes catching up with your peers. Check out how others are doing, checking your progress and their progress. Once a week, typically is enough to keep you on track. It is not overwhelming. It's not over time consuming and therefore your time commitment is not stretched.

You are listening to the I Hate Numbers Podcast with Mahmood Reza. The I Hate Numbers podcast mission is to help your business survive and thrive by you better understanding and connecting with your numbers. Number love and care is what it's about. Tune in every week. Now, here's your host, Mahmood Reza.

::

Hi, folks, and welcome to episode 22 of I Hate Numbers. My topic today is working together with others on your business. My name is Mahmood. I'm an accountant and educated by profession, experience, and love. Numbers are in my DNA and my life's mission is getting business owners to experience and share some of that number love.

::

Getting on friender terms with your numbers will certainly help your business survive, thrive, and make money. What's not to love? In today's topic, I want to share four reasons why working together and with others is good for your well-being, your business growth, and your bottom line. The inspiration for this podcast came through my own recent experience of working with my business partner and colleague Joe North on building a community of like-minded business owners to take them on a path of business growth.

::

I’ll share more about the business-growth club at the end of the podcast. Being part of a team matters. Even if you are used to running the show by yourself, flying solo, when you're part of a community and you're building connections, you can help your business’s growth and success. And working together on your business is beneficial, not only for you, not only for your own well-being, but it has a good impact on your business as well.

::

So, why is that? Well, the four headline reasons I want to share with you come down to teamwork, learning from others, accountability, who doesn't love a bit of accountability, and frequency, aka regularity. Let's explore those four headlines in a bit more detail. So, teamwork. Now, most businesses, most self-employed, we're typically independent individuals.

::

We tend to have lots of tasks that we're taking on,such as the HR, the finance, the marketing personnel. We may be a large business and have people to help us with that, but in formal lives, perhaps when we work for companies, those tasks will be typically done by other people, but once we enter that world of self-employment, we have to take on a lot more of those tasks ourselves.

::

Now, self-sufficient entrepreneurism can make for a highly dynamic forward-looking business, but sometimes it's good to actually find a peer group, work with others who have got a similar mindset to yourself, other business owners, and communication and collaboration, bouncing ideas of others are great ways to learn and grow.

::

Finding your own supporters, your own tribe, ones who share your own vision, your values, the entrepreneurial spirit, wanting to grow your business is a fantastic thing to tap into. So, working with others, teamwork is a valuable input into your business success. The second factor I want to talk about is learning from others.

::

Now, if we think that we know everything in business, there's nothing more to learn, then that's a very dangerous, retrograde attitude to have. Everybody has experiences to share. Everybody can learn from the successes and mistakes of others, and this all helps us and helps you in your own business development. Planning in isolation can lead to very blinkered, distortive view of your future.

::

You end up doing what you know, which is what you've always done, and a vibrant community that shares ideas and thoughts can help stimulate new ideas for your own business, promote interesting perspective on things. So, rather than us reinventing the wheel, going through a very laborious task here, we can share assets.

::

We can share ideas, and we save time, and we free up our own head space for those growth-focused activities. And more importantly, you can improve yourself, building and growing, knowing what you know to progress forward. So, fertilization, tapping into other people's mindsets and experiences is a wonderful thing.

::

So, that's halfway through. We're talking about teamwork. We're actually working as a collective in a community. It can be very inspiring, very impactful. We're talking about learning from others, their mistakes, and learning from mistakes is a positive thing. I know that sounds counterintuitive. Let's talk about topic number three, and that's accountability for your business growth.

::

If you've got people in the support network, they are there as your accountability coaches, your accountability friends. Once you've committed to something, you've told somebody you're going to do it. You are under a bit of pressure. You are committed, but it's powerful to have a cohort of people who are in a similar situation yourself, making you accountable.

::

They'll encourage you. They'll keep you on track. They’ll ask you questions. It's a bit like being at school where you’re expected to hand in your homework. You'll get updates, but it's all there done in terms of making you move your business going forward. Accountability also makes you more responsible. You are motivated to do the activities, to keep you engaged in growing your business.

::

You know, when you've got to check in, you know you've got to find yourself keeping focus and you've got to keep yourself aligned to your goals. And let's face it, who wants to lose face in front of their peers? Accountability with other people who are in a similar situation to yourself really helps you keep you focused on your goals.

::

And let's face it, is all to help keep your business growing. So, let's recap. Three out of the four headline reasons why it is good, beneficial to work as part of a community, part of a group working on your business. We've talked about teamwork, where we work with others. Now, notice we're not employing these individuals.

::

We're actually sharing experiences here. We're learning from others. We've got accountability where we've committed to do a task, a plan of action, looking at something, checking something, and we're accountable to the rest of our peers. And notice the word there is peers. We're not talking about employees, people who are in a similar situation to yourself who wish to go on a particular journey.

::

The last main headline reason why it's good to be part of the right community, working with others on growing your business is frequency or regularity. So, having a weekly catch up with your group means you're reminded of what your commitments are. You're reminded of what your tasks are and what you've got to do.

::

That regularity is also very helpful because it's a great opportunity to reflect on where your progress is taking you, how you're doing against the objectives you've set yourself, making small adjustments if you need to. Also, a lot of self-employed businesses will work in isolation. So, a good catch up a little bit,

::

see how others are doing, and checking your progress and their progress, you know, is a wonderful thing. Once a week, typically it's enough to keep you on track. It's not overwhelming. It's not over time-consuming, and therefore your time commitment is not stretched. So, let's recap. Four headline reasons why working with others in a community on your business is extremely beneficial.

::

We've talked about teamwork. We've talked about learning from others, your peers, and they don't have to be the same business, but they're in business. We're talking about accountability, and we're talking about the regularity and the frequency of those catch ups. Now, you might be listening to this and think, well, I don't have a team.

::

Well, you have two choices. Either make your own team or be part of one. I'm going to share with you at the end of the show notes details about the Business Growth Club that me and Joe have kick-started. Do you want to be part of a community of people who support each other to business success? Well, contact me, details in the show notes at the end, and be part of our Business Growth Club, our business community.

::

So, let's recap, folks, on the content list of the podcast. We’ve talked about working with others in a community, working on your business, why it's beneficial. We’ve talked about teamwork, learning from others, accountability for your business, growth, and frequency. Those regular catch-up meetings, which is good not only for your wellbeing, but also good to take your business forward.
