Sometimes we are very angry with others. That anger is often very justified. That anger too - the longer we leave it, the more angry and hurt we can become: hatred is a very easy path. And it begins getting scary when suddenly we realise - when we want to change and start forgiving or loving, we have suddenly lost a lot of our freedom to do that. We can hardly look at the person in the face, we can hardly think of them without, basically, willing them some destruction. This is what God explains in our first reading today: “No, in his heart was to destroy, to go on cutting nations to pieces without limit.” No matter how strongly we feel, or how justified we are, for our own sake, as well as our neighbour’s, its important we bring these feelings to the Sacred Heart in prayer, and any evils we have acted on in thought or deed to confession. These sacraments not only heal us but also ease our pain and remove the vices which have built up around how we feel: and they give us back our nobility and freedom.
