You're listening to Bernie Brightly,

2

:

episode 28, Some Tough Love.

3

:

This is burning brightly, a podcast

for Christian moms who are feeling

4

:

called to build a business and

share their light with the world.

5

:

I'm Bonnie Wiscombe, a life

coach, mom, and entrepreneur.

6

:

And I'm honored to be your guide.

7

:

As you face this business building

adventure full of highs, lows,

8

:

and everything in between.

9

:

This is where we help each

other find the courage to shine.

10

:

Microphone (ATR2100x-USB Microphone)-1:

Hello, my friends.

11

:

Today's episode is going to be a

little tiny bit of a kick in the pants

12

:

for all of us who struggle to get

moving, especially when we feel stuck

13

:

regarding something in our business.

14

:

Now, admittedly, this

isn't usually my struggle.

15

:

My struggle is usually with thinking at

all before I just dive in and take action.

16

:

I love that action line.

17

:

I really want to get started and very

often I don't plan well enough ahead of

18

:

time because I want to just start moving.

19

:

but.

20

:

I think all of us struggle with

hesitation and avoidance sometimes

21

:

when things feel particularly hard.

22

:

If you want to know if you're struggling

with this, then ask yourself, do you

23

:

feel fear, overwhelm or insecurity

about any aspect of your business?

24

:

Because where there are fear, overwhelm

and insecurity, there will also be

25

:

hesitation, procrastination and avoidance.

26

:

Think about the last time you

procrastinated something, it was

27

:

probably because you felt overwhelmed

or you were a little bit afraid of

28

:

something or you're a little bit

insecure or you just didn't want to.

29

:

So first we need to define what it is

you are avoiding or procrastinating.

30

:

It might be something very specific

that you have in mind that you've been

31

:

thinking about forever, but you just

haven't taken that plunge to get started.

32

:

It could be getting a degree or

a specific sort of training or

33

:

certificate to help you move forward

on this business you want to build.

34

:

It could be just telling people

what your business is about or

35

:

what you want it to be about.

36

:

I struggled with this for a long

time with my first business.

37

:

I was so nervous to tell people.

38

:

I just thought everyone's going to

make fun of me or tell me it's a bad

39

:

idea or say something that's going to

make me feel something negative, right?

40

:

So I didn't even want to say it out loud.

41

:

Could it be building a website or some

other sort of technological problem?

42

:

Side note if you haven't yet built a

website for your business, you're going

43

:

to want to attend my free training

that's coming up on October 4th.

44

:

It is called Online Business Made Easy.

45

:

We're going to get a very

simple webpage up and running

46

:

for your business in one hour.

47

:

You're not going to want to miss it.

48

:

It's totally free.

49

:

So the link will be in

the show notes for that.

50

:

So there's, there's my little free

training plug if you are struggling with

51

:

building a website, but likely you know

what this challenging thing is, something

52

:

that you've been putting off for a while.

53

:

Once you have identified what

it is that's keeping you stuck,

54

:

we have to figure out why.

55

:

Your brain is so brilliant.

56

:

It wants to avoid pain and discomfort,

and it does so by pushing back

57

:

at things that it knows is going

to bring pain and discomfort.

58

:

So you are likely telling yourself

a story about this thing that is

59

:

keeping you from moving forward.

60

:

So let's identify the story.

61

:

A few stories that I've heard that

are very common and that I love to

62

:

still entertain myself as I'm building

a business are, I'm not good at

63

:

technology, Does that sound familiar?

64

:

I don't know what I'm doing

or I'm scared of failing.

65

:

I don't want people to judge

me or what if this isn't the

66

:

right thing or the right path?

67

:

Do any of those sound familiar to you?

68

:

They all sound familiar to me.

69

:

There has been a time in my business

journey where I have felt or thought

70

:

one or multiple of these, sometimes

all of them at the same time.

71

:

They're so, so, so common.

72

:

Or if it's a different story,

identify what that story is

73

:

that you're holding on to.

74

:

I'm going to give it to you straight.

75

:

You guys, you are probably

bad at technology.

76

:

If you're thinking that

story, it's likely true.

77

:

That's okay.

78

:

You probably also don't know

what you're doing and you will

79

:

probably experience failure.

80

:

You will also probably have people

judge you and it's likely that

81

:

you're not on the right path yet and

that you will pivot at some point.

82

:

But so what?

83

:

What does any of this mean?

84

:

Nothing.

85

:

It just means there's something

you haven't learned yet.

86

:

There's something you

need to progress through.

87

:

There's something you need

to push forward through.

88

:

None of it is a deal breaker.

89

:

All of it is normal.

90

:

Now you could be moving forward and

experiencing all of these things.

91

:

Or you could stay stuck exactly

where you are right now and in a year

92

:

have nothing to show for your pain

because there's discomfort on either

93

:

side of the line, there's discomfort

right now in procrastinating and

94

:

trying to do anything but that thing

that you know you should be doing.

95

:

And there's discomfort moving through

it as well to learn the technology,

96

:

to figure out the path, to tell people

about things and get judged by them.

97

:

That's life.

98

:

So you guys might laugh at me, but

I find a lot of wisdom in a lot of

99

:

kids cartoons that my children watch.

100

:

And, the one I want to refer

to today is in Kung Fu Panda.

101

:

Love those movies.

102

:

There is a turtle who is very wise

and his name is Master Oogway.

103

:

And he has this line that we

quote all the time in my family.

104

:

And he says, one often meets his destiny

on the road he takes to avoid it.

105

:

Cartoon irony for you.

106

:

And I think that is so

true in life in general.

107

:

We think that by procrastinating this

next project or this next big step that

108

:

we will save ourselves pain and suffering.

109

:

But what kind of pain and suffering

is involved by staying stuck?

110

:

There is plenty there, too.

111

:

You get to choose what discomfort, maybe

we shouldn't call it pain and suffering

112

:

because that sounds really bad, but

there will be discomfort on either side.

113

:

Which discomfort would you rather have?

114

:

The one of staying here or

the one of pushing through and

115

:

seeing success on the other side?

116

:

So now we've defined exactly what it is

that you are avoiding or procrastinating.

117

:

So now ask yourself, what is it

that you're trying to escape?

118

:

Whatever you're escaping is

probably a negative emotion.

119

:

What if you knew you were going

to feel those emotions anyway?

120

:

Just a different flavor

of them right here.

121

:

but then you wouldn't have the

benefits of the business to

122

:

counteract that negativity.

123

:

What would you think about that?

124

:

In other words, what are you waiting for?

125

:

Are you waiting for things to get

easier before you push through?

126

:

Because it probably won't.

127

:

It will probably only get harder.

128

:

Now you may be telling yourself, well,

I have a very real thing that I'm

129

:

waiting for before I move forward.

130

:

Maybe you're looking for better childcare

131

:

or you want to wait until your baby

is in kindergarten, or you want to

132

:

wait until you get a better computer,

so it's not such a pain in the butt.

133

:

Okay, I get that.

134

:

There are some very real reasons that

might be worth So I'm going to talk a

135

:

so now let's talk about how it feels to

be in the middle of building a business.

136

:

When you get started, likely, you will

feel lots of enthusiasm and excitement.

137

:

So if you've already started building

your business, you probably know

138

:

what I'm talking about, right?

139

:

That, that excitement of telling

people and of, you know, finishing

140

:

that training or whatever it is,

diving into this thing that you've

141

:

been thinking about for a long time.

142

:

It's thrilling.

143

:

And then you get stuck on something and

you feel less excited and less thrilled.

144

:

Maybe you feel overwhelmed, or maybe

there's even some boredom there.

145

:

And you think, gosh, I

don't want to do anything.

146

:

Right now, especially not that next step.

147

:

You become a master of avoidance

and procrastination, right?

148

:

Doing all the things except for that thing

that you're supposed to be working on.

149

:

And this is totally normal.

150

:

You guys, I like to look at life

in general, but especially building

151

:

business as a roller coaster.

152

:

There's highs and there's lows, there's

exhilarating thrills and bursts of speed.

153

:

And there is the part where you're

just sitting there at the beginning,

154

:

waiting for everyone to buckle up.

155

:

It's kind of boring.

156

:

So there's a book called The Dip by

Seth Godin, and he talks about the

157

:

valleys of this business building

adventure, he talks about how it's

158

:

frustrating, it's boring, and it

attacks almost every single project.

159

:

At some point it becomes

a little bit boring.

160

:

None of them are exciting

all the way through.

161

:

That's just not how life works.

162

:

And he says this in the book,

extraordinary benefits accrue to the

163

:

tiny minority of people who are able to

push just a tiny bit longer than most.

164

:

So that's what I want for us, you guys.

165

:

I want us to be the people who

accrue the extraordinary benefits

166

:

because we are the tiny minority

that pushed past those struggles.

167

:

What if you knew that your first

client or customer was just on

168

:

the other side of this task?

169

:

Or what if whatever you define as

success was right around the corner

170

:

from this thing, but you're just

sitting here waiting for something

171

:

to change, waiting for something to

get easier before you push through.

172

:

Why are you dreading that

step so much when so much

173

:

greatness is on the other side?

174

:

I can definitely guarantee you

this, your definition of success

175

:

is not on this side of the task.

176

:

It's not going to come from doing

everything in your power other than

177

:

that project that you're putting off.

178

:

We humans are so good

at putting things off.

179

:

Think about.

180

:

College or high school when you

had your last academic big project

181

:

that you had to do and you put it

off until the last possible second.

182

:

We're so good at just finding anything to

do except for that thing and the anxiety

183

:

over that project only grows as the

deadline gets closer because you haven't

184

:

done anything and you haven't even very

often, I had haven't even cracked the

185

:

book to see what the assignment was.

186

:

I just kept putting it off.

187

:

Then once I looked at it, very

often I thought, Gosh, this

188

:

was not that big of a deal.

189

:

If I had started a month ago, I

would have been long done and I

190

:

wouldn't be worried about it anymore.

191

:

But instead I've made things harder

and harder on myself because of

192

:

all this anxiety leading up to it.

193

:

So just facing it, just at least

taking a look at the project or

194

:

whatever it is you need to build

and determining the next step.

195

:

Okay, so I want to wrap up with

a little challenge for you guys.

196

:

I love doing this.

197

:

So if you're driving, don't do it,

obviously, but when you get home,

198

:

I want you to identify that next

logical step in your business.

199

:

The one that you are probably

already know about because you're

200

:

probably purposely avoiding it.

201

:

Okay.

202

:

And write it down on a piece of paper.

203

:

Once you have that step written

down, then write down all the

204

:

thoughts you're thinking about it.

205

:

Give yourself several minutes to do this.

206

:

The fears, the concerns, the

worries, whatever comes up for you.

207

:

Write that down as well.

208

:

everything that goes through your mind

when you think about this project.

209

:

Then ask yourself and write down

what is the worst that could happen?

210

:

This is actually kind of fun.

211

:

I kind of like doomsday scenarios.

212

:

Well, everyone could laugh at me.

213

:

I could lose a bunch of money.

214

:

I could, get on a stage and fall over.

215

:

I don't know.

216

:

All the worst things that could happen.

217

:

And then.

218

:

I want you to ask yourself

what's the best thing that could

219

:

happen and write that down.

220

:

And that's even more fun

going to best case scenario.

221

:

Well, I could have a six figure launch.

222

:

I could make my new best friend.

223

:

I could, whatever it is, fulfill

all my wildest fantasies.

224

:

Write those down as well.

225

:

Likely the reality of pushing

through this next project and

226

:

step will be somewhere in between.

227

:

In my experience, the worst.

228

:

The negative stuff never actually

happens, and the negative stuff feels

229

:

bad, but only for a really brief moment.

230

:

I can't even really remember any of the

really big, scary, negative things that

231

:

I've done in my business, because it

just lasts such a short period of time.

232

:

And in my experience, the good

stuff ends up being way more

233

:

amazing than I could have imagined.

234

:

Seriously.

235

:

Especially I've noticed as I come

more and more in alignment with

236

:

what God is calling me to do.

237

:

As, as I take steps.

238

:

Closer and closer to what I feel like

is my true purpose in my business.

239

:

Things get even more and more incredible,

and just the feeling as I work on my

240

:

business every single day is amazing.

241

:

I love it.

242

:

So, as a recap, identify the next

logical step in your business.

243

:

Write down the thoughts

you're thinking about it.

244

:

Ask yourself what's the worst

thing that could happen?

245

:

And then ask yourself the,

what's the best thing that could

246

:

happen and then get started.

247

:

Final question for you guys.

248

:

Have you prayed about this

part of your business yet?

249

:

God just might have some

insight for you, is my guess.

250

:

Sometimes when I feel stuck and in

that little dip of uncertainty or

251

:

frustration in my business, I just

pray and ask for confirmation that

252

:

I'm headed in the right direction.

253

:

Sometimes all I need, and even though

I've had it before and I've felt like,

254

:

yes, this is the right thing to do.

255

:

Sometimes I just need

a little extra boost.

256

:

And so I will just ask God, can you

just confirm to me that I'm doing

257

:

the thing that you want me to do?

258

:

And You'll feel this amazing, inspiring

boost to keep you going and give

259

:

you the courage to move forward.

260

:

Remember one step, even if it's in

the wrong direction is worth probably

261

:

a month or more of wondering if

you're going in the right direction.

262

:

The action trumps so much.

263

:

So let's get started.

264

:

Thanks so much for listening friends.

265

:

We will talk to you next Thursday.
