Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide), the anti-aging supplement everyone from celebrities to your own family members seems to be asking about. Why did it explode in popularity when its cousin NAD+ was the star just a couple of years ago? Is it truly a breakthrough for aging at the cellular level, or is it just the latest shiny wellness trend? Jenn breaks down what NMN is, why it was off limits in supplements for so long, and what to look for if you are curious. She also shares what she's noticed after months of experimenting, and why some of her clients and colleagues report a very different experience. So, is NMN worth adding to your routine, or is the hype bigger than the results? Press play to find out where Jenn lands. Like what you're hearing? Have you heard about it? Maybe you've seen [00:00:30] celebrities talking about it. Recently, my sister asked me about it because she heard Kim [00:00:35] Kardashian talking about it, or really that just that Kim Kardashian was taking it. Now, [00:00:40] it's an anti-aging supplement that has exploded in popularity [00:00:45] over the last year. So let's look at what it is, why it's [00:00:50] appealing to people, what to look for if you want to play with it, and I'll [00:00:55] share my experience of taking it for about the last six months or so.
Okay, so what is [:Low NAD levels, low [00:01:35] NAD+ levels are associated with signs of aging, metabolic disease, neurodegeneration, [00:01:40] and even cancer. Now, NAD+ is found in every [00:01:45] cell in your body. It breaks off debris from cells, it repairs and rejuvenates [00:01:50] DNA, it gets inside the cells and tells the DNA to function [00:01:55] properly. NAD+ is essential for creating cellular energy, [00:02:00] maintaining cellular health, and levels of [00:02:05] NAD+ correlate with health status in aging.
For [:Higher NAD+ availability helps the [00:02:50] mitochondria, which is the batteries of your cells. It generates ATP, which [00:02:55] is the primary energy currency of the cell. It supports enzymes involved in [00:03:00] maintaining DNA integrity, metabolic regulation, and [00:03:05] cellular responses. So essentially, NMN supports NAD+ levels, [00:03:10] which promotes sustained cellular energy production, maintains [00:03:15] mitochondrial efficiency, and reinforces the internal systems that support overall [00:03:20] cellular health.
So- NMN converting into NAD+ [:So what's interesting is that [00:04:05] at the time when we had our conversation on NAD, so this was May [00:04:10] 2024, it was a hot topic in wellness and anti-aging or longevity [00:04:15] conversations, and NAD+ supplements were flying off the shelves. [00:04:20] Now, it's NMN supplements that are flying off the shelves, which has people asking [00:04:25] me, "Why wasn't NMN part of the conversation before like it [00:04:30] is now, and then which do I choose?"
t piece of that, at the time [:More recently, so it was September 29th of [00:05:10] 2025, the FDA cleared NMN for [00:05:15] supplement companies to use. So your NAD+ supplements [00:05:20] offered a different NAD precursor called NR, which is [00:05:25] nicotinamide riboside. Now that we can use NMN, the question is [00:05:30] NMN versus NR, which is an [00:05:35] NAD+ supplement that we used to know.
tom line of all of this, NMN [:Now, based on the research, NMN supplementation [00:06:05] increases blood NAD concentrations and is safe and [00:06:10] well-tolerated with oral doses up to 900 milligrams of NMN [00:06:15] daily. Although some trials showed clinical efficacy, as [00:06:20] determined by looking at physical performance and how much NAD+ was in the [00:06:25] blood, reaches its peak at a dose of 600 [00:06:30] milligrams daily at an oral intake.
[:It's [00:07:00] naturally produced by the gut microbiome. And similar to NAD+, [00:07:05] spermidine levels and our ability to absorb it decrease with age. [00:07:10] Spermidine promotes healthy activity of the cells responsible for maintaining the [00:07:15] health of our skin and our gut. And then fisetin is a plant compound with [00:07:20] antioxidant properties.
antioxidants many times, and [:The truth is either is fine. If you [00:07:55] take both, you're essentially giving yourself both of the precursors to [00:08:00] NAD+. Now, I have played with all the combinations, NAD+ and NMN [00:08:05] together, and then just NMN on its own. So it was around [00:08:10] 2024 I did NAD+ on its own. I didn't really notice [00:08:15] much of a difference. When I started playing with the NMN in February or [00:08:20] March of 2026, I started regularly taking the NAD+ [00:08:25] too.
now that I noticed much of a [:So maybe that's a thing. I have no idea. Overall, [00:08:50] I don't know that I notice that [00:08:55] much of a difference in my day-to-day life of what may be happening on a [00:09:00] cellular level. The caveat to this is I just passed another birthday. [00:09:05] I feel exactly the same as I did a couple [00:09:10] years ago, so maybe it is working. You know, and then as I'm saying this [00:09:15] out loud, I wonder if maybe this is part of why my perimenopause symptoms are [00:09:20] lessening.
e no idea. I think it's also [:So I just turned [00:09:50] 43. I'm closer to that age. They are [00:09:55] further from that age. So that differential may be [00:10:00] why, you know, it's my differential from 35 and those decreased levels of [00:10:05] NAD+ are likely less dramatic than those in their 50s, 60s, and [00:10:10] 70s who are now increasing their NAD levels. So that actually tracks and makes [00:10:15] logical sense, and I wonder if I continue to take [00:10:20] these over the next few decades, what I might feel like and what could happen [00:10:25] if I continue to keep my NAD+ levels in this higher range.
[:And I like these [00:11:00] for the ingredients, the quality and the quantity, plus the formulations [00:11:05] offering more than just a single nutrient. They offer some pieces that support those key [00:11:10] nutrients. And now When you hear the internet or your friends talking [00:11:15] about NMN, you can sound like such a genius knowing that NMN in [00:11:20] supplements was illegal until September 29th, 2025, and [00:11:25] you could share what it does, why it's popular, and even what to look for.[00:11:30]
