Harriet Thomas:

Hi there, I'm Harriet Thomas and welcome to the D Tour podcast. I'm setting off on an incredible 900 miles journey from Land's End to John O Groats to raise 25,000 pounds for Dementia Adventure. It's a huge challenge and I'm so excited to share it with you. Lots of people have asked me, are you ready? And I don't really know what that means because I'm not really sure what to expect. I've never walked this long before. I've never been away from home for this long before, apart from when I went travelling when I was about 18. So it's going to be a totally new experience for me, a massive adventure. And my mindset is simply to take each day as it comes and to try and immerse myself in every moment.

What does the letter D stand for? Dementia, of course. But it's also about taking a detour from the everyday, getting outside and thinking differently. And yes, soaking up that glorious vitamin D that's great for our brain health. The only thing I'm slightly scared about are the more remote and high parts of the walk. So we're talking Pennine Way and the West Highland way because I have a fear of heights. So what am I taking with me on my three month walk? Well, I'm keeping it very, very stripped back because a heavy backpack really makes walking hard. So I am camping so I need my tent, my mat, my sleeping bag, my cooker.

But all in all, I've managed to make it weigh around eight and a half kilos, so that's not too bad. Ps, I'm very small myself, so I can't carry a huge amount. We haven't had the best summer, have we? So I've definitely made sure that I've got some heavy waterproof trousers and a really good raincoat with me. And of course, I will be ending up in Scotland in October, so definitely expecting some cold weather so I've also got my Merino Long Johns with me, which are a vital part of any hike, I think, because especially if you're camping, it gets ever so chilly at night. On the D Tour, I'll also chat with experts in the field of dementia about essential topics, meet inspirational people living with dementia and connect with local businesses and incredible individuals supporting people with dementia along my route. So join me on my immersive journey from your living room. Walk with me or suggest people that you want me to connect with.

Come to our website dtour.UK So that's d t o u r uk. And we're going to have a weekly podcast episodes wherever you usually download your podcasts. Just look for the D Tour and you can follow my journey, see what I see, and listen to the people that I meet and just enjoy the adventure that I'm having. And maybe even it will inspire you to have your adventure too. And it doesn't have to be three months walking from Land's End to John O'Groats.
