You know there's another level available to you, but the harder you push, the heavier everything feels. More effort. Less clarity. More pressure. Less energy. That's usually the moment people think something's gone wrong. It hasn't. You've just outgrown the identity that got you here.
Most ambitious leaders hit a point where the old way of operating stops working.
The strategies that used to create momentum suddenly feel exhausting. You push harder, but the returns shrink. You start questioning yourself, your confidence, your business, your leadership.
Nonie introduces what she calls the "gateway moment." The point where your ambitions outgrow your current identity.
Using the famous lobster story from psychiatrist Rabbi Dr Abraham Twerski, Nonie breaks down why discomfort is often the signal for growth, not failure. She explores the conditioning many high achievers absorb around productivity, proving and sacrifice and why those patterns eventually become too small for the person you're becoming.
This episode also introduces the core philosophy behind Radical Recentring: putting yourself back at the centre of your life and work so you can build success from your authentic best, not from pressure, performance or external expectations.
If you've been feeling stuck, stretched thin or strangely disconnected from the version of success you worked so hard to build, this episode will put language around what's actually happening.

The First Step
Radical Recentring with Nonie White
This is Radical Recentring with me, Nonie White. The show for ambitious women who are done pushing, proving and performing, and who are ready to build something unshakeable from who they are at their authentic best. If you're at an inflection point, ready for your next level of success, personal power and impact, and you want to do it differently, you're in the right place. Let's go.
Episode 1, the first step.
You're being called to your next level. More authority, more influence, more impact, alongside more ease and more joy. As ambitious, self-led people, there are times in our lives when we all get this feeling of wanting more. We know there's another level available to us. We want to be playing all out, claiming what's ours, making a massive impact on the world around us. We want to do it for us. We want to do it for all of those who came before us. And of course we want to do it for our children.
And yet suddenly the person we want to be feels out of reach. Everything feels hard, heavy. We feel stuck. The strategies that got you here aren't getting you there. You're pushing harder, but the returns are diminishing. There's a gap between what you're capable of and what you want to be doing, who you want to be being, and where you currently are. And it all feels deeply uncomfortable and disconcerting.
These are gateway moments. And the crucial realisation is, it's not that you're doing anything wrong. There's nothing to fear here. It's just time for your next evolution.
The lobster. This always reminds me of the famous story of the lobster. There was a rabbi called Dr Abraham Twerski. He was also a psychiatrist. And Dr Abraham Twerski pointed out that a lobster is a soft animal living inside a rigid shell. Now that shell doesn't expand. So how does the lobster grow? As the lobster grows internally, its shell becomes too tight. It feels pressure, discomfort, constriction. So it hides under a rock, casts off its old shell and grows a new one. An adult lobster will shed their shell once a year to every two years for the rest of its life.
Twerski's insight was this: the stimulus for the lobster to grow is that it feels uncomfortable. He joked that if lobsters had doctors, they'd never grow, because as soon as they felt uncomfortable, they'd get a prescription to numb it, feel fine and stay as they always were.
But that's exactly what happens to so many ambitious people. We build an identity that works, ways of showing up, coping with life, rules about who we need to be to succeed. And for a while, it fits. And then we grow. Internally, something shifts, but the shell stays rigid. So we feel squeezed, misaligned, like we're working harder for less.
Here's what I've learned through my own experience, through hundreds of hours working with ambitious people, leaders and entrepreneurs, and through my Forbes-featured research, The True Cost of Female Entrepreneurship. 83% of female founders experience high stress. 78% report constant worry and anxiety, and over half have experienced burnout. The biggest blocker to personal or professional growth is not strategy. It's when your ambitions have outgrown your identity, how you see yourself. Your identity is the shell that's holding you back. It's got too small for who you're becoming. Building self-awareness and self-knowledge is both how you free yourself from your outgrown shell and how you build your next one that enables your next level results.
If what I'm describing feels familiar, the discomfort of knowing you've outgrown where you are today, this is exactly the work that we do inside the Unshakeable Method, my four month one-to-one coaching programme. If you're ready to explore working together, the link is in the show notes. Now back to the episode.
Why this happens. Here's why so many of us get stuck in shells that no longer fit. The system we operate in wasn't built for most of us. And the messages that we've absorbed about what success looks like, what we should or shouldn't do, how leaders should behave, what we need to sacrifice to get ahead, they've become the unconscious shell within which we're trapped.
See if any of these messages feel familiar. Hustle harder, push more, work faster, be perfect. Don't upset anyone, don't fail, don't ask for help, don't show your feelings, don't be weak, don't rock the boat, don't ask for too much, prove yourself constantly. Pretend you're not a parent when you're at work. Pretend you don't work when you're being a parent. Feel guilty.
Too many of us live with these unexamined identities, sleepwalking through life, wondering why it all feels so hard and so heavy. Carl Rogers was a mid-20th century humanistic psychologist and the creator of person-centred psychotherapy. A lot of his work feeds into positive psychology today. And Rogers believed that most of his clients, so most of the people that came to him for psychotherapy, were experiencing distress because they lacked authenticity in their lives. They were living with these unexamined identities. We tend to live our lives listening to the noisy external voices, which are telling us what we should do, rather than the quiet voice that knows what's actually right for us.
And here's what I see time and time again when my high performing clients come to me. When you try to fit yourself into a system that wasn't built for you, driven by external messages that aren't aligned with your best interests, you end up depleted, reactive, performing confidence you don't feel, and waiting for a sense of arrival and validation that simply never comes. Now you're not broken. You're definitely not failing. It's the system that's failing you.
The radical move. Here's what differentiates the people who thrive from those who merely survive. They put themselves at the centre of everything. It sounds simple. It's actually radical. Because the system tells you to put yourself last, to sacrifice, to earn your place through endless output, to follow the rules. The people who thrive reject that. They go against the grain. They create a way of living and working that actually works for them, for who they are, what they need to thrive, what they care about most and how they can make their highest contribution.
Putting yourself at the centre of your life and your work is the most powerful move that you can make, especially if you're operating in a system that's stacked against you. Now it feels counterintuitive. I get that. It can feel selfish. It can sound selfish, and it's the only thing that actually works. This is Radical Recentring. A philosophy that every expansion starts with the same place, you.
The process. So what does building from yourself actually look like? Firstly, it starts with knowing yourself. This is the opposite of sleepwalking through life. It means intentionally developing self-awareness, understanding what you need for good wellbeing and energy foundations and why you don't do these things for yourself already, recognising the conditioning you've absorbed, the thinking patterns and the narratives that you've unconsciously adopted that are controlling your moves and keeping you in your current shell. You can't shift what you can't see.
Secondly, then it's owning yourself, building deep self-knowledge, discovering your authentic self, who you are at your best, your unique core values, your signature character strengths, what you need to operate and lead from that place, and owning it unapologetically.
Finally, honouring yourself, creating your next level identity from you at your best, expressing it in how you lead, designing your life and work around your authentic best, not around external expectations.
Goes like this: know yourself, own yourself, honour yourself. This is how you cast off the shell that no longer fits and build the one that enables your next level.
What this looks like. One woman I worked with, let's call her Sophie, came to me saying, I've had enough of being me currently. Sophie wasn't failing, she wasn't in crisis. She'd built a successful consultancy over five years, but her wellbeing was at rock bottom. She'd completely depleted herself by overworking and she felt totally lost. She'd started applying for jobs because she was worn out by her business and she needed someone to tell her she was good enough. She told me, I've spent pretty much a lifetime feeling like I'm not enough. I've cried oceans about it and I'm tired of it. She'd had therapy, she'd done lots of work on herself, and so far nothing had changed. Sophie was 51 and acutely aware of time slipping through her fingers.
Today, Sophie knows how to live and work in a way that optimises her performance and her wellbeing. She knows her value and she's deeply grounded in her unique contribution to her industry. She knows what she's most passionate about. She knows where she's going. She knows how she's going to get there. And she's excited about the journey. She speaks at industry panels. She chairs the national alliance. She walks into rooms with senior leaders and she holds her own. And she told me, even better, I kind of like myself now. Not louder, not different, just aligned.
The distinction. On one side of the gateway, building from external messages, working harder, copying frameworks, performing confidence, people pleasing, trying to mould yourself into a hostile system that wasn't built for you. This operating mode has a ceiling and it's utterly exhausting. On the other side, building from your authentic best, knowing yourself, owning yourself, honouring yourself, creating a way of living and working that actually works for you. It creates unshakeable performance, unshakeable confidence, and unshakeable leadership of yourself and of others. This way creates success that is sustainable and lasts.
The gateway is a choice point. And staying where you are is also a choice.
Why support matters. This isn't work that you can do alone, not because you're not capable, but because you can't see your own shell when you're inside it. You can't distinguish external messages from internal clarity when you've been absorbing those messages your whole life. You can't see your own conditioning when it feels just like how things are or who you are. Without support, you stay stuck in your head. You spin. You keep building from the same place. You keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. So let me ask you, are you building from external messages or from your authentic best?
The invitation. Now we all have gateway moments, different seasons, different inflection points, different moments where we're called to expand and evolve. And the choice to walk through or not is yours.
If you recognise yourself here and you're feeling that call to your next level of authority, influence and impact, with unshakeable performance and unshakeable confidence, I'd love to support you. I work with ambitious people through a four month programme called the Unshakeable Method. It's a proven process that helps you build your next level leader identity from your authentic best. There's a link to an application to work with me in the show notes. It's 10 questions and it literally takes two minutes.
Because that discomfort you're feeling, it's not a problem to solve, it's data and it's an invitation to evolve. Every expansion starts with you. The question is whether you're ready to build from your authentic best.
