But He designed that passionate ecstasy to be experienced safely within the protective fortress of covenant marriage, where it deepens trust, bonds two lives into one, and creates a joyful environment for raising the next generation. Over my seventy years of living, and my fifty years of studying Scripture, I have seen that true, lasting romance does not fade with time when it is rooted in covenant commitment; rather, like a deep, established well, it grows richer, deeper, and more satisfying with every passing decade.<#0.5#> Then, look at the piercing, contrasting question in verse twenty: "Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman, or embrace a promiscuous woman?" Solomon uses that exact same Hebrew word, shagah! He contrasts the holy intoxication found in a faithful marriage with the cheap, destructive intoxication of infidelity. Foolish men and women deceive themselves into thinking, "No one sees me," completely forgetting that the Sovereign Lord of heaven and earth is watching every single step.<#0.5#> Look at the inescapable, self-inflicted consequence detailed in verse twenty-two: "An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him!" Sin always promises freedom, but it always builds a prison. The individual who plays with immoral compromise thinks they are in control, believing they can stop whenever they want. But Solomon reveals that sin acts like invisible cords, or a hunter's net, that slowly and methodically wraps around the soul! It binds the human heart in spiritual addiction, suffocating guilt, and layers of deception, until the traveler is completely, helplessly trapped.<#0.5#> Finally, verse twenty-three delivers the solemn, tragic summary of chapter five: "He will die for lack of discipline, plunging into ruin because of his great foolishness."
