Speaker:

July 2nd, 2024.

2

:

And we're back for another edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Today, we're going to look at second

Kings chapters, one through four,

4

:

even though the book is called Kings.

5

:

We're going to look at some profits today,

starting with second Kings chapter one,

6

:

We're going to look at

the end of Elijah's rain.

7

:

All right.

8

:

Second Kings chapter one, after the death

of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel.

9

:

Okay, so we're going to get into that

soon, but Notice that falls through the

10

:

lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria..

11

:

Ky sick.

12

:

and injured.

13

:

And so he sends one of his servants.

14

:

to go inquire of the God Beelzebub.

15

:

Now you probably heard

this name before BLS above.

16

:

This is the God of Ekron.

17

:

That's the Philistines.

18

:

And so he wants to know whether

he's going to get better.

19

:

Alijah stops him and says, hold on.

20

:

I know what the answer is to this.

21

:

Why not ask the God yo way?

22

:

And so he sends him back,

says you're going to die.

23

:

That's basically what happens here.

24

:

Once the messenger returns

with that bad news.

25

:

ASI says please go and bring Elijah here.

26

:

So he sends a group of 50 men,

three separate times and each time.

27

:

Elijah says something like this.

28

:

If I am a man of God, then may

fire come and consume you guys?

29

:

This happens twice.

30

:

The third time, the captain of the

50 is wise enough to fall on his

31

:

knees before Elijah and say, please.

32

:

Let's not do this the same way

it happened for the other guys.

33

:

The spirit of God.

34

:

Through the angel of the

Lord says, go with him.

35

:

Don't be afraid.

36

:

And so we see that some of.

37

:

Elijah's apprehension was because of fear.

38

:

He didn't know what was going

to happen to him, how these

39

:

guys were going to treat him.

40

:

And what ASI would do.

41

:

And so God alleviates his fears

and says, you can go with him.

42

:

And then Elijah delivers the same

news and that's exactly what happens.

43

:

A Zion dies.

44

:

Now what's interesting

is that ASI has no sons.

45

:

And so he doesn't pass on the

lineage to the next king in line.

46

:

He passes it on instead to his brother,

Joe Horam, we'll come back to him in a few

47

:

moments, but let's just keep in mind here.

48

:

Jessebelle and Ahab.

49

:

Have at least three kids.

50

:

We have a Hosea who just died.

51

:

Joe Horam or Joran.

52

:

Jose has eyes, brother.

53

:

And then after Elia.

54

:

At the lies important because she marries

Joe Horam in the Southern kingdom.

55

:

Okay.

56

:

We'll come back to them in a few moments.

57

:

Second Kings chapter two.

58

:

Elijah is taken to heaven here.

59

:

And elijah and Elisha are made privy.

60

:

I don't know how we don't

know how they find this out,

61

:

but the Lord reveals to them.

62

:

That Alijah is going to have in soon.

63

:

Now he's interesting because he's

the only guy besides Enoch who were

64

:

transported to heaven without having

to go through the gateway of death.

65

:

This is interesting because I wonder.

66

:

What.

67

:

Their bodies look like if they

don't physically die, that

68

:

means that their bodies are

transported into heaven with God.

69

:

Well, the only kind of transportation

from here to heaven with God that I

70

:

know of is Christ himself, who is the

first fruits of the new resurrection.

71

:

So he has his glorified body.

72

:

What were the bodies of Enoch and Elijah?

73

:

Like, I don't know if there's

an answer to that, but it is an

74

:

interesting question on the less.

75

:

and in any case in chapter two, Elijah

goes from Gill gal to Bethel, to Jericho.

76

:

And he's trying to have a life

to stay behind, to stay here.

77

:

It's going to be more comfortable for

you, but Elijah says not a chance.

78

:

I'm staying with you.

79

:

And perhaps Elisha knew that as

someone prepared to die, that's

80

:

typically when they offer the blessing.

81

:

And so Alicia stays

close, like white on rice.

82

:

I get to the Jordan.

83

:

And then Alijah parts, the waters.

84

:

And so you see some of

the wonder working power.

85

:

That's an operation through Alijah.

86

:

And then finally he says to

Alicia, What do you want?

87

:

You let me know what you want.

88

:

And he says, I want a double

portion of your spirit on me.

89

:

I love that because he's not content

with what his forefathers has done.

90

:

He wants some more, he's

ambitious for God's glory.

91

:

And I think that's really the case or

because he doesn't want it for his power.

92

:

Does it want it for his glory and

honor, he's ambitious to see greater

93

:

things done for the glory of God.

94

:

And I think that's really instructive

for you and for me, I don't want

95

:

to be content with yesteryear's

fruit yesteryears harvest.

96

:

I want to see more.

97

:

I want better.

98

:

I want greater.

99

:

Not that I long for my

own glory and honor.

100

:

And he said, I hope not.

101

:

As best I can read my own heart.

102

:

That's not the desire.

103

:

I want to see God's glory in honor.

104

:

And I hope you feel the same way.

105

:

Be ambitious.

106

:

For God's glory and ask for great things

from God much like Alicia does here.

107

:

As.

108

:

God would have it.

109

:

Alicia sees his father transported.

110

:

Bye chariots of fire and horses of fire.

111

:

And it takes Alijah and

takes him into heaven.

112

:

Now, another question I

have is this is fascinating.

113

:

If this happened in 2024, it

would be, see the same imagery,

114

:

chariots and horses, or would we

see modern day weapons of warfare?

115

:

Would we see the Lord's army

is coming down in a jet?

116

:

Or, I don't know.

117

:

What a drone drop down and pick up Elijah.

118

:

I don't know the answers

to these questions.

119

:

I just know that this is interesting.

120

:

This is cultural.

121

:

Context happening.

122

:

And so God is speaking to them in a

cultural way that they would understand.

123

:

I think we sometimes forget that.

124

:

Not to say that.

125

:

That maybe there aren't courses

in Chariton heaven either are.

126

:

I don't know, but I think what's happening

here is God is communicating to them.

127

:

In a way that they understand,

according to their time in a place.

128

:

So what ends up happening here?

129

:

Elijah mourns he's

saddened by the situation.

130

:

He tears his clothes and then he

makes his way back to Jericho.

131

:

Here.

132

:

Here's something interesting happens.

133

:

They ask him.

134

:

Where did Elijah go?

135

:

Should we go look for him?

136

:

And he says, Hey, you don't need to send

anybody to do this, but they insist.

137

:

Please, let us go find him.

138

:

Now let's put the best construction on

this for the profits that are there,

139

:

perhaps they weren't sure that Elijah

was transported elsewhere and perhaps

140

:

he died and he's exposed right now.

141

:

And, you know, That in the ancient,

near east, it is proper and good

142

:

and honorable to have a burial.

143

:

And so perhaps they want to bury

him and be sure that if he is around

144

:

somewhere physically, they can bury him.

145

:

And so finally, Elijah is embarrassed and

says, okay, go ahead, go do the thing.

146

:

They find him not, they come back

and he says, didn't I tell you.

147

:

So I told you I saw him

transported into heaven.

148

:

What else do you want from me?

149

:

You have one of the first

miracles that he commits?

150

:

You have one of the first miracles

that he demonstrates by partying the

151

:

Jordan river to get back to these guys.

152

:

And the second one here is turning

bad water into clean water.

153

:

This is interesting.

154

:

But I think it points forward, however,

faintly to the future of the living water.

155

:

In fact, a lot of what Alicia

does here, I think are interesting

156

:

connections to Christ ministry.

157

:

I'll point them out as I see them here.

158

:

In the final section of chapter two.

159

:

You have a story that

you probably know about.

160

:

Uh, it says here, verse 23,

he went up there to Bethel.

161

:

Now remember Bethel Northern kingdom.

162

:

This is probably one of

the centers of idolatry.

163

:

So this is not a good place.

164

:

While he was going up on the way

some small boys came out of the

165

:

city and jeered at him saying,

go up, you bald head, go up.

166

:

You bald head.

167

:

This is, there's some debate about

this, whether they actually were

168

:

small boys and I'm using air quotes

here, whether they were just kids.

169

:

And I think for a lot of people, it's

like, oh, the kids are just having fun.

170

:

They're just, you know,

they're just playing.

171

:

Well, let's back up here a

second and recognize what

172

:

kind of point God is making.

173

:

I don't know what the age of these

young men were, but they likely were

174

:

older than what you might imagine

when you hear the term small boys.

175

:

And so let's just take

that at face value here.

176

:

These people, his little gang of young

men, instead of working, instead of

177

:

finding themselves doing the right

thing, they're mocking a prophet of

178

:

God and clearly they know who he is.

179

:

They say, go up, perhaps they're

saying go away or they're saying

180

:

something like, why don't you go get

transported to when that'd be great.

181

:

If you guys take taken away to heaven,

Elijah, we'd love to be done with you.

182

:

Go away.

183

:

So God puts an end to this immediately.

184

:

Now, granted, this is Alicia acting, but

this is God acting through the prophet.

185

:

So this is not just a light show,

having a bad day saying, oh, I

186

:

wish I had a full head of hair.

187

:

You're making me feel embarrassed.

188

:

No, this has God's judgment on disrespect

and dishonor for God's prophet.

189

:

This goes back to one of the

things that we, as a church like to

190

:

highlight, we want a high view of God.

191

:

Which means that we have a high view of

his people and they have a high view of

192

:

his leaders, high view of his church.

193

:

We have a high view of God and that's

going to affect everything else about us.

194

:

And we have to teach our kids that

I don't know how old these young

195

:

men were, but however old they

were, they should have known better.

196

:

And consequently got teachers then.

197

:

And so in verse 24, Elijah turns

around and when he saw them, he

198

:

cursed them in the name of the Lord.

199

:

And two, she bears came out

of the woods and tour 42 of

200

:

the boys is not a small group.

201

:

This is a gang.

202

:

Tore them to pieces.

203

:

From there.

204

:

He went on to Mount Carmel.

205

:

And from there he returned to some area.

206

:

Second Kings chapter three.

207

:

Brings us into a scene

that we haven't seen yet.

208

:

Jehoshaphat king of Judah.

209

:

Is cooperating with Jehovah

from the son of a Ahab.

210

:

Now, remember we just saw a Hosea.

211

:

Die.

212

:

And a Habs other son, Joe Horn

is now ruling in his place.

213

:

And it says here that

he rules for 12 years.

214

:

So he's functioning in the background.

215

:

And these next several chapters

in second Kings, we'll see

216

:

a little more of his reign.

217

:

I think in chapter eight,

we'll see the end of his reign.

218

:

But he reigns for 12 years

and he's not a good king.

219

:

He's.

220

:

You should be getting used to this

by now for the Northern kingdom.

221

:

They're not good Kings.

222

:

And so this is what's happening.

223

:

He invites.

224

:

Jehoshaphat to be part of

a campaign against Moab.

225

:

and Yehoshua fat.

226

:

Man, I don't get it.

227

:

I just don't get it.

228

:

It doesn't seem to learn.

229

:

In any case Jehoshaphat's says, yes,

I'm in, count me in, what do we do?

230

:

Where are we going?

231

:

And so Moab now is facing up against the

Northern kingdom, Southern kingdom and

232

:

eat him, eat him is playing a role here.

233

:

This is an ungodly Alliance.

234

:

Unwise.

235

:

You've heard this before.

236

:

Mind, mind your alliances,

mind your friendships, but

237

:

here Jehoshaphat's included.

238

:

And so now they're suffering because

they're wandering in the wilderness here.

239

:

There.

240

:

They are lacking water and

Jehoshaphat's says, Hey, can

241

:

we ask a prophet of the Lord?

242

:

And then.

243

:

Joe Horam says, Hey, let's call a

Alicia says I would not even look at

244

:

you if it were not for Jehoshaphat's.

245

:

So he gives him.

246

:

It gives them some counsel and

advice after listening to some music.

247

:

That was interesting to me, by the way.

248

:

Oh, you saw that.

249

:

Okay.

250

:

Bring out the musicians I need to

get in the spirit, get in the mood.

251

:

I don't understand how that

works, but that's what he used.

252

:

And God used that.

253

:

And then God said, I'm

going to give you water.

254

:

So standby the next morning

for the, during the morning,

255

:

sacrifice water flows in there.

256

:

The Moabites see the

water from a distance.

257

:

And in their mind they see it as

red, whether this was an optical

258

:

illusion or God caused them to

see it as red, whatever it was.

259

:

They think, oh, these Kings turn on each

other and they've slaughtered one another.

260

:

Let's go get the bounty.

261

:

Let's go get the spoils.

262

:

So they rush over only to fall

right into the hand of the Northern

263

:

Southern kingdom and eat them.

264

:

And they're struck with a great blow.

265

:

And so after this, then, When the king

of Moab solid, the battle was against

266

:

him and that he was losing you have

something interesting and a bit confusing.

267

:

Take place.

268

:

Look at verse 27, it says here,

then he took his oldest son

269

:

who was to reign in his place.

270

:

This is the king of Moab.

271

:

And offered.

272

:

Him for a burnt offering on the wall.

273

:

And there came great wrath against

Israel and they withdrew from him

274

:

and returned to their own land.

275

:

Now there's questions here.

276

:

Who's who's angry.

277

:

Who's who's who's wrath

is being talked about.

278

:

And what took place.

279

:

Why did they return?

280

:

What's what's happening here?

281

:

Uh, and there are.

282

:

Uh, several options

here about who's upset.

283

:

Some might say, well, this is God's wrath.

284

:

That doesn't make sense.

285

:

God's wrath is not against Israel

because they don't, they weren't

286

:

the ones who committed this.

287

:

It seems like the best

way to look at this.

288

:

Is that the Moabites, their

wrath was incited because

289

:

of what they had witnessed.

290

:

And consequently, they get intense

and fierce against the Israelites

291

:

and the Israelites lose hope

Israelites are thinking, oh no,

292

:

the God chemo is against us.

293

:

He's angered because of the

Kings sacrifice of his son.

294

:

And so we better, we better back up.

295

:

That seems like the most likely

situation, although there's a few

296

:

different ways to approach them,

but I think that's the easiest.

297

:

I think that's the Mo that does the

most justice to the context here.

298

:

And so they did part.

299

:

Moab.

300

:

Doesn't quite lose the battle.

301

:

They don't win, but they're not done yet.

302

:

They'll return in a little bit.

303

:

Second Kings chapter four.

304

:

You have three different stories of

Alicia's miracle working power here.

305

:

And I remember he asked for a

double portion from the Lord

306

:

and you're going to see that.

307

:

So Alicia, first of all, uh,

shows compassion to a wife of

308

:

one of the sons of the prophets.

309

:

Who says your servant?

310

:

My husband is dead.

311

:

Now this group of people, the,

uh, the sons of the prophets.

312

:

This is fascinating to me

because this group apparently

313

:

are being trained to prophesize.

314

:

They're being taught on how to do this.

315

:

And I don't think this is something

God does today, but this is

316

:

what was happening back then.

317

:

There were groups of people that.

318

:

We're being taught and trained

to function in that office.

319

:

Well, in any case, Elijah, Alicia, excuse

me, provides for her provides food.

320

:

He goes above and beyond with oil and

supplies to take care of this people.

321

:

And, and part of the, part of the

interesting thing here is that.

322

:

Their faith is on display by bringing

in as many vessels as they did.

323

:

They brought every vessel they

could possibly bring to receive

324

:

the blessing that Elisha promised.

325

:

And she, consequently

was blessed from that.

326

:

The Shulamite woman is generous.

327

:

She's wealthy and generous to Alicia.

328

:

Elisha and his servant Are the

recipients of her generosity.

329

:

And then Alicia says, Hey, what

do you want me to do for you?

330

:

And she says, well, we don't have any

kids and you know, otherwise we're fine.

331

:

And he says, all right,

you're going to have a kid.

332

:

She does have a kid.

333

:

But that kid does die.

334

:

And so she calls Elijah back and

says, please come and see my son.

335

:

The haze eye goes first

or got HASI goes first.

336

:

And he's ineffective.

337

:

He does nothing.

338

:

He's unable to do anything

for the young lad.

339

:

Now that's important because I think

that shows us and it's hinting toward.

340

:

eventual apostasy, which you'll

see in a few chapters, I think.

341

:

Well, Alicia goes.

342

:

And he does something very similar to what

you saw Elijah do in first Kings chapter

343

:

17, he lays himself out over the boy.

344

:

He prays multiple times

and then God responds.

345

:

Favorably, brings a child back to life.

346

:

She, he gives him to her, to his mom.

347

:

She's happy.

348

:

Everyone's happy.

349

:

We were celebrate.

350

:

God's working in Elijah's life.

351

:

The last story in second Kings chapter

four is Alicia purifying, the deadly stew.

352

:

So the stew someone

accidentally brought poison.

353

:

He cleans it.

354

:

And then he's able to, uh, he's

able to cleanse it, but then

355

:

this is also really cool here.

356

:

Uh, in verses 42 through the end of the

chapter here says a man came from bale.

357

:

Shalisha bringing the man of God

bread of the first fruits, 20 loaves.

358

:

Okay.

359

:

There's only 20 there.

360

:

And Alicia said, give to the men

that they may eat, but his servant.

361

:

Has he said.

362

:

How can we set this before a hundred men?

363

:

And so he repeated give them to

the men that they may eat for

364

:

thus, as the Lord they shall eat

and they shall have some left.

365

:

Does this sound like anyone to you?

366

:

There you go.

367

:

I think that there's a parallel

here, a faint looking forward of

368

:

what Christ would eventually do.

369

:

He multiplies the bread,

multiplies the fish.

370

:

And you see some of this here,

foreshadowed in Elijah's ministry.

371

:

Jesus is the true in better profit.

372

:

And that's why I think the stories

here in why so interesting.

373

:

Well that second Kings

at one through four.

374

:

Great job reading way to

keep up on your Bible time.

375

:

This is so valuable and so useful.

376

:

You may not discern the way

that God's working on you.

377

:

Every time you open your Bible, but

rest assured he is so great job.

378

:

tomorrow for the next edition

379
