Speaker:

Welcome to the Crochet

Business School podcast.

2

:

I'm your host, Kelly Thomas, and I'm

going to help you to make your crochet

3

:

business dreams a reality stitch

by stitch without you being changed

4

:

your hook and being able to live

that lifestyle you've been dreaming

5

:

of, using the power of your crochet.

6

:

Today I want to talk about how crochet

is a dirty word, which sounds bananas,

7

:

but when you are selling what you

make, the word crochet can have a

8

:

really bad effect on your sales.

9

:

So this doesn't apply if you're selling

patterns doesn't apply if you're selling

10

:

courses or eBooks, anything like that.

11

:

If you are selling what you make,

so the crochet that you finish, what

12

:

you sell postings out at craft fairs.

13

:

Do you use the word crochet

when you are selling?

14

:

So when you are listing your crochet

on, say, Etsy or Shopify, are you

15

:

using the word crochet in the title?

16

:

Are you talking about

it in the description?

17

:

If you are, you might want to

rethink it because crochet can

18

:

have an unconsciously bad effect.

19

:

So people might not even know

they're doing this, but they

20

:

can see the word crochet and

skip off and go somewhere else.

21

:

And it's not because you are a

bad crocheter, it's not because

22

:

what you're selling is terrible.

23

:

You could have the most perfect

icing for someone, but seeing the

24

:

word crochet can give them the ick.

25

:

I know it's insane, but

the reason is simple.

26

:

Most people who buy crot.

27

:

Are not crocheters.

28

:

They do not get it.

29

:

They do not understand it.

30

:

They love the look of it.

31

:

They may not know why.

32

:

They may not know the name of the

technique, but they love the look.

33

:

They want to buy it.

34

:

However, their knowledge of

the word crochet, for the

35

:

most part comes from grandma.

36

:

They see grandma crocheting in front of

the TV at night, just crocheting away,

37

:

and she gets through loads of yarn.

38

:

She gets through loads of projects.

39

:

She showers her kids grandkids

with blankets, with sweaters,

40

:

with dishcloth, all sorts.

41

:

There's always something

crochet going around,

42

:

but this also cheapens your crochet.

43

:

Because grandma does it.

44

:

It can't be that difficult.

45

:

It doesn't take very long.

46

:

So why is it so overpriced?

47

:

There can't be that much skill involved.

48

:

Grandma's doing it.

49

:

It's an old lady.

50

:

They see crocheting and so it

becomes old fashioned in their minds.

51

:

It brings the value down.

52

:

So if this is someone's experience

of crochet, the word turns them off

53

:

really unfair.

54

:

It's very unfair, but they don't

actually know they're doing this.

55

:

This is all in the subconscious.

56

:

They may not have any clue that they don't

like the word when it comes to something

57

:

they're buying, and we like that.

58

:

Our shopping choices are

governed by our subconscious.

59

:

We get this nagging feeling that

something's not quite right and

60

:

that stops us from buying online.

61

:

And that defense is quite useful,

especially when it comes to spotting

62

:

like scam sites and something

that's just too good to be true.

63

:

But our subconscious can also.

64

:

Unfairly make us walk away from

something that's actually really good.

65

:

And this is one of those examples,

if someone's only experience with

66

:

crochet is grandma and her granny

blankets, they're going to think twice

67

:

about buying crochet for themselves.

68

:

So what do you do about it?

69

:

Why you just take the word crochet out.

70

:

If you are selling a bag

and your title on Etsy is.

71

:

Um, over the shoulder crochet bag.

72

:

Take the word crochet out.

73

:

Think about when you are

buying anything else.

74

:

Shoes, bags, whatever it is.

75

:

Do you care about how it's made?

76

:

Chance is, oh, you don't, you

don't care if it's sewn together

77

:

by hand, sewn together by machine.

78

:

If it's, um.

79

:

Stitch together using an overlock.

80

:

You don't care.

81

:

You don't care what stitches

used to put it together.

82

:

You don't care if it's woven or

loom made, maybe you do, but for

83

:

the most people buying it who are

not crafters, they, they don't,

84

:

so they're not really going

to care that it's crochet.

85

:

95% of people who buy crochet are not

crocheters because most crocheters

86

:

will simply crochet themselves.

87

:

So you are selling to people who

do not know an awful lot about

88

:

their experience of it comes from

family members who maybe sat on that

89

:

back porch, crocheted the day away.

90

:

And this is the part that

cheapens the, the word crochet.

91

:

And this is the part

that's doing the damage.

92

:

Because, you know, crochet

is such an accessible craft.

93

:

Anyone can do it, but

not everyone can sell.

94

:

Not everyone can make something

that is so eye catching is so well

95

:

put together that they can sell

it and make a business out of it.

96

:

But your average Joe blocks on the

street does not know the difference

97

:

between a hobby crocheter and an artisan

crocheter who's making money from it.

98

:

They are two different things,

99

:

and so your sub, their

subconscious is going to work

100

:

and not in a good way for you.

101

:

And so you gotta get past using

the word crochet all the time

102

:

because you care that it's crochet.

103

:

You are very proud of your skill, which

you absolutely should be, but most people

104

:

who are buying crochet do not give a

monkeys about how it's put together.

105

:

They care that what they're

looking for does the job, looks

106

:

fabulous and satisfies their need.

107

:

How it's made isn't important.

108

:

Now, the story behind how I came up with

the idea to make it, that's important.

109

:

But the actual method of construction, ie.

110

:

Crochet, does not matter.

111

:

You do not need to work.

112

:

Use the word crochet.

113

:

When you are selling what you

make, it can do you a disservice.

114

:

It can trigger that subconscious,

um, connection with grandma

115

:

who is crochet all the time.

116

:

So can't be that difficult.

117

:

It can't be.

118

:

Maybe they could just go

ask Grandma to make it.

119

:

Instead, it's all at work

in the back of their minds.

120

:

It gives 'em the ick.

121

:

They move away and they'll

go buy something else.

122

:

Instead, if you take the word

crochet out of your title, you

123

:

are going to stand a far better

chance of selling what you make.

124

:

You need that title to be descriptive.

125

:

You need it to have keywords in, but

crochet should not be one of them because.

126

:

It can do a disservice.

127

:

It really can lose you sales.

128

:

Now you can put a sentence or two

in the description about it being

129

:

crochet, preferably down at the bottom

for people who are curious, because

130

:

some people will be absolutely.

131

:

But when you appear in search results,

you have one chance to get someone

132

:

to click to find out more and find

that all important buy button.

133

:

But if they see the word CRO and go, Ooh,

they can just really easily scroll on

134

:

to the next item that catches their eye.

135

:

When you have a split second to

influences someone's decision to

136

:

click, they can also be influenced

by that split second it factor that

137

:

their subconscious has brought up.

138

:

They may not even register that

they've seen the word crochet,

139

:

but it just makes 'em scroll on.

140

:

You've got to stop that scroll.

141

:

The way to get people to click

and buy is to stop that scroll.

142

:

And even the slightest bit of

that doesn't seem quite right

143

:

to me, will make them move on.

144

:

They won't even stop for long enough

to figure out why they've moved on.

145

:

They've just seen something that

doesn't quite fit for them, and

146

:

crochet can have that effect.

147

:

To me, it's a very, very old word.

148

:

You know, it goes back to the 17 hundreds.

149

:

It's a very old word.

150

:

Most people have heard of it.

151

:

Many might not know what it is, and

someone who is buying something that

152

:

is crocheted don't necessarily know

much about it, and so you gotta get

153

:

past that first and the way to get

past it, it's just simply not make

154

:

it an issue in the first place.

155

:

And admit the word crocheted from your

title because it doesn't matter that your

156

:

item is crocheted how it is constructed.

157

:

It is not important to the buyer.

158

:

They care that it does the job.

159

:

It's the item that they are

looking for, and it suits them.

160

:

The method by which it was made does

not factor in, so why give people the

161

:

chance to turn away from your crochet

and buy an absolutely fabulous product

162

:

that's gonna be amazing for them.

163

:

Because of a word that has

no bearing to the sale.

164

:

Let's remove that possible issue by

simply not making an issue at all.

165

:

It can improve your sales, it can

improve your click through rate,

166

:

which is going to improve your sales

as well, and it will stop people from

167

:

scrolling, make people hang around

a bit longer and take a closer look.

168

:

And stop that ick factor

from coming through.

169

:

All those connotations of crochet being

old fashioned, of being cheap, easy.

170

:

It goes away if you simply omit the word.

171

:

Because you know, people who are

looking for um, a nursery rug are not

172

:

looking for a crochet nursery rug.

173

:

They're just looking for a nursery

rug that suits their decor.

174

:

That suits their vision for

their new baby's nursery.

175

:

The method by which it was

made is not important to them.

176

:

You don't need to use it.

177

:

It's your pride wanting

to use it, and I get it.

178

:

I absolutely get it.

179

:

It feels very natural to put it in.

180

:

It feels like something that should

be used because it's a search term.

181

:

But it's only a search term for

those people who are looking for it.

182

:

And very, very few people will be

looking specifically for crochet.

183

:

In fact, most people who search

crochet say, um, crochet nursery rugs

184

:

are crochet cells themselves who are

researching keywords that they can

185

:

use for their listings, not actually

people who are, who are buying.

186

:

And it can completely skew.

187

:

How your perception,

188

:

you have to decide if you're

going to use the word crochet

189

:

or not, but my advice is to not,

190

:

I understand why you want to use it to

give as much detail as possible because

191

:

you're very proud of your skills because.

192

:

It feels like you should, but sometimes

what feels like we should do is not

193

:

right in terms of getting more business

coming through and making more sales.

194

:

So I hope that's been useful and,

you know, the, these things we

195

:

live and learn and you can test

this out by trial and error.

196

:

You know, it's, it doesn't

have to be, uh, all or nothing.

197

:

You can put some listings in

with the word crochet in some

198

:

without, and test them out.
