I have seen that energy during inquiry-based science activities and creative writing experiences, where students move beyond simply completing an assignment and begin exploring ideas because they truly want to understand more.
I unpack how curiosity can slowly be replaced by rushing, grades, fear of mistakes, passive technology use, and the pressure to find quick answers. Students need time and emotional safety to wonder, test ideas, ask questions, make mistakes, and explore possibilities. When classrooms constantly prioritize speed and completion, some of the deepest learning can be lost.
This connects directly to the choices teachers make in every subject area. Inquiry, thoughtful questions, productive struggle, creativity, and purposeful technology use can all strengthen curiosity. Students are more likely to take intellectual risks when they know it is acceptable to be wrong, revise their thinking, and learn through the process rather than simply producing the correct answer immediately.
At the end of the day, I believe curiosity is one of the deeply human qualities schools must protect. In a world filled with automation, instant information, and quick answers, students still need opportunities to wonder deeply, imagine possibilities, and ask meaningful questions. Helping curiosity grow may be one of the most important things educators can continue to do.

One of the things I've noticed during inquiry-based science activities is how powerful curiosity can become.
When students are genuinely exploring something, you can see it. Students are asking questions, testing ideas, trying things, adjusting their thinking, and wanting to figure something out.
And honestly, those moments feel different because students are not just completing work.
They're wondering.
They're investigating.
They're becoming deeply engaged in learning itself.
But I have also seen curiosity show up in completely different ways too.
Sometimes during writing activities, students start experimenting with words, descriptions, sentence structure, or creative ideas in ways that go beyond the assignment itself.
And you can tell something shifts.
They're not just trying to finish.
They're exploring.
They're creating.
They're playing with ideas.
And I think protecting that curiosity matters more than ever right now.
Before we get into it, I want to ground myself in gratitude. Here are three things that I'm thankful for.
The first thing that I'm thankful for is unexpected encouragement from people.
Sometimes one encouraging comment can completely change someone's day.
The second thing that I'm thankful for is trees and shaded places on hot days.
There's something calming and peaceful about shade during warm weather.
The third thing that I'm thankful for is the feeling of finishing something meaningful.
Whether it's a project, a goal, or a school year, meaningful completion feels powerful.
Let's get back into the main idea.
Students are naturally curious.
Young children especially ask questions constantly.
Why?
How?
What if?
Could this work?
What happens if we try this?
But sometimes, as students move through school and digital environments, curiosity can slowly get replaced by rushing through tasks quickly, focusing only on grades, trying to avoid mistakes, endless scrolling and passive consumption, or simply trying to get the right answer fast.
So the topic once again that we're going to be focusing on is Protecting Curiosity.
Here's what I've been thinking about.
Curiosity is a powerful driver of learning.
When students become curious, learning changes.
Students lean in more.
They ask deeper questions.
They explore ideas longer.
And they become more engaged in the learning process itself.
And that's what we want as educators.
Curiosity creates energy in classrooms.
And that energy matters deeply for meaningful learning.
Inquiry helps curiosity come alive.
Inquiry-based learning creates opportunities for exploration, investigation, experimentation, and problem-solving.
We want students to begin thinking more independently instead of simply waiting for answers from adults.
Learning has to go beyond that.
The process of students thinking independently helps them develop ownership and investment in their own learning.
Once again, it can't just be about waiting for answers from adults.
That's really not deep, meaningful learning for young people.
So I encourage you to use inquiry in your classroom.
I encourage you to lean into the power of inquiry learning.
Curiosity requires space to think.
I'm a big fan of curiosity.
Students need time to wonder.
Students need time to explore possibilities, make mistakes, ask questions, and test ideas.
Constantly rushing can sometimes shut curiosity down.
When we're shutting curiosity down time and time again, that takes a toll on learning and on students taking learning seriously.
We want students to take learning seriously by giving them space to be curious.
Curiosity often develops through slowing down and exploring deeply, not through speed alone.
Clearly, there are things where we can't just stay in one place all year long.
But we also can't rush through things just to check off boxes.
That's not learning either.
That's not meaningful.
That's not a meaningful learning environment.
Fear can reduce curiosity.
Students who become overly worried about grades, performance, or being wrong may stop taking intellectual risks.
And that's so detrimental to students.
Curiosity requires some level of emotional safety because students need to feel comfortable wondering out loud, trying ideas, and not always knowing the answer immediately.
And so that's why it's so important to create that space where students can be curious and try ideas.
I'm just thinking about my own classroom.
I work really hard to create that space where students aren't afraid of grades or afraid of being wrong.
It's okay to be wrong.
I can't tell you how many times my special education co-teaching partner and I said to students during math time and other subject areas this past school year:
It's okay to make mistakes.
It's okay if you get it wrong.
But it's not okay to just not try.
It's not okay to not put forth effort.
You've got to try, make a mistake, learn from it, and move on.
We had that conversation a lot.
We tried to put that energy into the classroom.
Technology can either support or weaken curiosity.
Technology creates incredible access to information.
It can create opportunities for students to explore, become even more creative, and discover more things.
But it can also encourage passive consumption, endless scrolling, quick answers, and short attention spans.
Which means intentional use matters deeply.
Using technology intentionally is critically important in our classrooms.
We can't just put students on technology for technology's sake because it's there and think it will be a magical pill for students.
It can't be.
It has to be more meaningful than that.
It has to be more purpose-driven and guided by teachers.
It is not a magic pill.
So technology can either support or weaken curiosity.
And we want to strengthen curiosity in students.
Tools should support curiosity, not replace it.
I'm going to say that again.
Write that down.
It's going to be on the test.
Tools should support curiosity, not replace it.
Let's talk about questions.
Questions matter as much as answers.
Sometimes schools can become overly focused on correct answers.
But thoughtful questions matter too.
Students who ask deep questions, explore possibilities, and challenge ideas are developing important thinking skills.
Sometimes there's not one answer.
There could be multiple answers.
Maybe some answers are better than others.
But sometimes when you're trying to find answers to interesting problems or challenges, there might not be one perfect answer.
And so that's where you create space where students can challenge ideas.
That allows students to develop important higher-level thinking skills.
And that facilitates curiosity nicely because curiosity matters across every subject area.
It doesn't matter what subject you're teaching or what you are responsible for teaching in the classroom.
Developing curiosity and higher-level thinking is vital for all of us.
All of us as educators have that responsibility when we're working with young people.
That curiosity and higher-level thinking—I cannot stress that enough.
It's not just the language arts teacher, the math teacher, or the science teacher.
Everybody.
The PE teacher.
The art teacher.
The music teacher.
Whatever you teach and however you work with students, we should be focused on not just maintaining curiosity, but helping it blossom and grow in young people.
We all have that responsibility.
And curiosity supports deeper thinking.
You've heard me talk about higher-level thinking and deeper thinking.
When students are more curious, they tend to think more deeply.
They investigate longer.
They reflect more.
And they stay engaged longer.
Curiosity naturally pushes students toward understanding instead of shallow completion, rushing, or just checking off a box because something is done.
No.
We want to push students toward deeper understanding.
And that depth matters greatly today.
Curiosity and creativity are deeply connected.
Creativity and curiosity go nicely hand in hand.
Curious students often become more creative.
They experiment with ideas.
They play with language.
They imagine possibilities.
And they're willing to try new approaches.
Creativity grows when students are allowed to explore and think flexibly instead of simply memorizing or repeating information.
Teachers help shape classroom curiosity.
Teachers are vital to this process.
The environment matters.
The questions we ask students matter.
The opportunities we create matter.
Students are more likely to stay curious when classrooms encourage exploration, wonder, discussion, and creative thinking.
That classroom culture matters deeply in protecting curiosity.
It protects humanity.
Curiosity is deeply human.
Wondering.
Exploring.
Imagining.
Questioning.
Those are human qualities, y'all.
Those are human qualities.
And in a world filled with automation and instant answers, protecting curiosity may become even more important moving forward.
Protecting curiosity may become one of the most important things schools can continue to do.
As I do a reflective close here, I want to say that sometimes education becomes so focused on outcomes that we forget how important wonder actually is.
Because curious students are not just learning facts.
They are exploring ideas, asking thoughtful questions, imagining possibilities, experimenting creatively, and building deep understanding.
Those are the things students are doing.
And honestly, those moments matter.
Especially now.
Because in a world full of instant answers, students still need opportunities to wonder about things deeply.
And maybe part of our role as educators moving forward is helping to protect that sense of curiosity before the world slowly teaches students to stop asking questions.
