The research, the conversations, the paperwork, the permission you give your kid before you ever leave home. That is not just preparation. That is love made practical.
On Tuesday we talked about what it actually takes to travel safely with an LGBTQ+ family. Today Heather brings it home with your Friday Butterfly Effect, reframing travel preparation not as a burden but as one of the most concrete acts of allyship you can offer your kid.
In this episode you'll get:
* This week's word, prepared, and why it is fundamentally different from anxious
* A tiny action that opens a real pre-travel conversation with your LGBTQ+ kid
* A micro-rebellion that turns your travel spending into intentional advocacy
* One line to carry into the weekend that reframes everything
Press play for your Friday reset and carry something real into the weekend.

At the heart of my work is a deep commitment to compassion, authenticity, and transformative allyship, especially for those navigating the complexities of parenting LGBTQ kids. Through this podcast, speaking, my writing, and the spaces I create, I help people unlearn bias, embrace their full humanity, and grow their capacity for courageous, compassionate connection.
For parents, allies, and those pioneering a way to lead with love and kindness, I’m here with true, messy, and heart-warming stories, real tools, and grounding support to help you move from fear to fierce, informed action.
Whether you’re listening in, working with me directly, or quietly taking it all in, I see you. And I’m so glad you’re part of this journey.

More Kind. formerly Just Breathe: Parenting Your LGBTQ Teen is a safe and supportive podcast in a heartfelt and empowering space where a mom and advocate offers practical guidance and education to parents and allies, fostering empathy, kindness, love, and strong boundaries while supporting LGBTQ teens and the diverse LGBTQ community—including gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, transgender, and queer individuals—through conversations about mental health, grief, gender identity, sexual orientation, human rights, social justice, parenting, parent support, and meaningful LGBTQ allyship and allyship in action.
On Tuesday, we talked about travel, about what it means to move through the world as a family with an LGBTQ kid.
Speaker A:The research that we do, all of the paperwork that we need, the cultural conversations that need to be had, that permission just to tap out and take a break, the instinct to scan every room you walk into.
Speaker A:And underneath all of that was one quiet truth.
Speaker A:Preparation is not the opposite of joy.
Speaker A:Preparation is actually what makes real joy possible.
Speaker A:When you do the work ahead of time, you get to be present when you arrive.
Speaker A:That is the gift, and that is what we are working toward.
Speaker A:I want to sit with something for a moment before we get to your Friday tools.
Speaker A:Most families travel without thinking about safety in the way that families with LGBTQ kids have to.
Speaker A:They pick a destination, book a hotel, pack their bags and just go.
Speaker A:That is a privilege.
Speaker A:I'm not criticizing it.
Speaker A:I'm just stating a fact.
Speaker A:Our families carry an extra layer, and carrying it does not have to be heavy.
Speaker A:We carry it intentionally.
Speaker B:Welcome to More Human, More Kind, the podcast for parents of LGBTQ kids and anyone trying to stay human in a world that keeps hardening.
Speaker B:I'm Heather Hester, and here we talk about fear, belonging, boundaries, courage, love, and what it means to protect what matters without losing yourself in the process.
Speaker B:Your child doesn't just need a parent who's informed.
Speaker B:They need a parent who is grounded and strong.
Speaker B:Let's take a breath and let's begin.
Speaker A:The research.
Speaker A:The conversations, the paperwork, the permission structures we build for our kids before we ever leave home, all of that is love made practical.
Speaker A:It is allyship and action.
Speaker A:And here is what I've learned after years of doing this.
Speaker A:The preparation becomes part of the trip.
Speaker A:The conversations you have before you go become part of the memory.
Speaker A:Your kid knows you thought about them specifically, very carefully, before you even got on the plane or into the car.
Speaker A:And that lands with them.
Speaker A:Always lands.
Speaker A:So this is your Friday reset.
Speaker A:One small shift that can create a meaningful ripple.
Speaker A:Your word of the week is prepared.
Speaker A:Not anxious or fearful, not even hyper vigilant.
Speaker A:Prepared.
Speaker A:There is a meaningful difference.
Speaker A:Anxiety focuses on what might go wrong.
Speaker A:Preparation focuses on what you can do about it this week.
Speaker A:Every time you feel that travel related worries start to creep in, come back to this word.
Speaker A:How can I prepare?
Speaker A:What do I already have in place?
Speaker A:What does my kid need from me?
Speaker A:Before we go this week, have one pre travel conversation with your kid.
Speaker A:Not a safety lecture, an actual conversation.
Speaker A:Ask them what they are most looking forward to on the trip.
Speaker A:Ask if there is anything they're nervous about.
Speaker A:Ask what they want to bring that will help them feel most like themselves.
Speaker A:Let them talk.
Speaker A:Let their answers guide you.
Speaker A:That conversation is the beginning of everything.
Speaker A:Your micro rebellion this week is booking something or researching something through an LGBTQ affirming travel resource.
Speaker A:Use the A3M risk map.
Speaker A:Visit the IGLTA website.
Speaker A:Find one hotel, one restaurant, one neighborhood at your destination that has been extended explicitly identified as welcoming.
Speaker A:Spend your travel dollars intentionally.
Speaker A:That is not just preparation, that is advocacy.
Speaker A:And if you need something to come back to this week, here it is.
Speaker A:Preparation is not the opposite of joy.
Speaker A:Preparation is what makes real joy possible.
Speaker A:Say it to yourself the next time the pre trip anxiety shows up and let it reframe the work as the gift that it actually is.
Speaker A:Thanks for being here this week.
Speaker A:Go do one small thing to prepare your family for something wonderful.
Speaker A:It does not have to be big, it just has to be intentional.
Speaker A:I will see you next Tuesday.
Speaker A:Until then keep becoming more human and and more kind.
Speaker B:Of.
