00:00:08 Shreya: welcome to Soul Sparks. I'm your host, Shreya, and this is the show where we go quickly but never shallow. We sit with sharp, bright moments of insight from people who have actually lived their wisdom. And today is one of those. And my guest today is Regina Huber, a leader who has spent years working with the inner side of high performance. So welcome, Regina. I'm honored to have you on my show.
00:00:35 Regina Huber: Thank you so much for having me on. I am delighted to be here.
00:00:42 Shreya: I'm I'm really thankful to you for joining. And just before we begin, a quick disclaimer for my listeners.
00:01:26 Shreya: And with that, Regina, before we begin, like tell me, what is one small thing in your life right now that is quietly sparking joy for you?
00:01:37 Regina Huber: That is sparking for me. Yeah, I mean, it's definitely always dance, but, you know, there's a lot of things and I, I love every single client success that I can see whether it's a small one, a big one, and oftentimes the smaller ones lead up to bigger ones. So that's what, what gives me that spark every single day when I work with my clients or just also an audience where I, somebody sends me a message saying, hey, this message really resonated, really helped me with something, or it inspired me to do something that is what lights me up.
00:02:20 Shreya: That's really beautiful. And thank you for sharing this with us. And I want to start with the heart of it. The version of leadership most people are taught is built on performance, output, visibility. But the leaders who actually last are Carrie, something quieter underneath. So can you walk us, um, into your own version of that leadership that like what you have to unlearn from the loud version? And what did the quieter version begin to show you that the loud version never could.
00:02:56 Regina Huber: Well, uh, it always depends on what we define, how we define things. So what is loud? What is quiet? Right. But, uh, what I would say is it's the impact that you have as a leader. And that doesn't always need to be loud. So I talk a lot about bold leadership, but that's not the same as loud leadership. So bold is that you really come forth with courage. You take bold steps, not just baby steps, right? As you often say, and you also have the courage to stand up and when when it's necessary against the mainstream. I think sometimes that is also done quietly in a way that you, you know, you talk to people, you explain things to people, you provide sources of information to people, or you you provide guidance to people and, uh, to me, uh, actually leadership is expressed through presence and that does not always require words. You already express who you are. You show up as somebody, right? We all do, whether we are aware of that or not, and whether we want it or not. It's automatic. But when we do it more intentionally, then we can use our energy. We can use our body language. We can use our body to play into this presence in a beneficial way. And, uh, I think that's, that's really, really important because, uh, yes, we have our words. Verbal communication is super important. But if you ever have dance and especially in partner dance, you will actually understand how important nonverbal communication truly is and what the big role of energy is in it, because energy flows into everything we say we do. We feel we, we, we, we, we think right. But we oftentimes don't think about that as part of our presence. So I think it's about how you show up. It's about whether people trust you because you show up authentically and you, uh, share transparently what your values are and what you stand for, these type of things.
00:05:23 Shreya: Yeah, I think there is something quietly important in what you just said, because the leaders who survive long careers without losing themselves are the ones who learn often the hard way. The performance is not the same thing as presence, and presence is actual currency. And, uh, can you tell us about the inner climate? Like the most people who lead well are leading from a private inner conversation that nobody else sees. So what is actually going on inside someone who leads from soul rather than from strategy? And what do most people not understand about that inner climate?
00:06:02 Regina Huber: Yeah. I think one thing doesn't exclude the other. We also need strategy. I don't want to belittle strategy. It's just that, you know, and, and what you call soul, I would call authenticity probably, or just maybe your essence, I call it the essence oftentimes because, you know, uh, we, we all have different words for different things, right? And, and I, I think the soul of, of someone is, is what, what is their essence? What do they stand for? What are their values? But also how do they show up? It's a, it's a, it's a combination of everything. And what are their deepest desires? How do, how do they want to create the impact that they came here to, to, to have in this world? and what also at the same time, what do they get fulfillment from? Because a lot of time we see this superficial success that consists of money, titles, uh, promotions, careers or big businesses. But then what stays behind and what's neglected is this, uh, what we often call fulfillment. And that's also why a lot of business owners eventually suffer from what we call a burnout, because that's not necessarily coming from being overworked. It's often coming from a place where we lost connection with ourselves, and we forgot that we are actually an important part in this as humans. And we focus so much on on results, on numbers, on whatnot, on the urgency of the day and on our routines, and we get caught up in that routine and we. We move on to a path that that feels more like a like an autopilot, like when we're driving in our car and we set a certain destination and then we don't really, you know, and then we forget about really paying attention how we're getting there because we've done it over and over and over. Uh, so. It's very easy to get lost in routine. And I think that is something that is not considered, but a lot of people, it's not considered early enough in the process to avoid this, uh, phenomenon of burnout when they don't really feel it anymore, when they feel either empty inside or flat, or they feel like, okay, something's missing here. This cannot be all.
00:08:46 Shreya: Yeah. And like, uh, what is the daily practice that keeps that inner climate steady for what you said.
00:08:55 Regina Huber: Well, there are many different ways of achieving this, and maybe achieving is not even the right word here, because we talk about achievement and the results arena. Right? But, but it's it's really being present with yourself, finding that inner alignment again and again and again. Because even presence, it's something that we find again. We may, you know, we, we may lose it for a moment, but we can find it again, reconnect to our own desires. To what, what do we want? Why did we create this business in the first place? What was our wish for it? What was it that that we wanted to do with this? Why could we have lost the freedom that we built the business for? right. And, and it's really important to reflect on these things and to also allow ourselves, uh, the time for it and to sit down, take a break and realign. And realignment can happen mentally. It can happen physically. It can happen energetically. And usually it's, it's a combination of, of all. It can happen spiritually. You know, it takes different shapes according to, to who the person is. But it's all about really finding that joy and harmony in life again and allowing yourself, giving yourself permission to focus on that. Because oftentimes we, we live in a society that is very performance oriented, very results oriented. So we constantly think we always have to be productive. And, you know, somebody actually told me the other day when I was recording for my podcast, she said, I'm so grateful that you're doing this type of content on your podcast and you're inviting people to speak about, uh, topics like this because most podcasts that are about leadership are about productivity. And, you know, everybody talks about that, but not about the, the, the other needs we all humans have. And once you figure that out for yourself as a leader, you can actually have a much more beneficial impact on your team. Meaning, you know, once you focus on yourself in that humane way and then also on your team, the more productive they will actually get and the more creative, you know. So it will be actually a natural consequence when we focus on the human first. It usually gives us great results.
00:11:48 Shreya: Yeah, I think I think that is so interesting because the cultural script for leadership is external, like the visible decision, the visible result, and the real engine is internal. It is in the inner climate. The leader walks into the room carrying, uh, and people feel it before they hear a word. And let us bring this into daily life like a real day calls, meetings, decisions, pressure. What does solid leadership actually look like inside that noise? Not the retreat version. The Tuesday version. The five minute version between meetings.
00:12:24 Regina Huber: Yeah. So you can easily find a tool that brings you back into presence, you know, and, and you can even find one online or a coach can teach you one. I think what it's really about is to, to do that deep dive work and deep digging work first, and then to integrate this and to to bring this into you as something that that becomes a habit. And that's why I also created something that I call the a life method. And so it's called live fully the, a life method. It, it's called the a life method because it consists of six steps or, or elements that all start with an A assess, awaken, activate, alchemize, align and act. And of course, as part of this process, I share some of those tools, right? So for example, you could a very simple one that everybody knows. But, but but we don't always do is deep breathing. I mean, everybody knows how to do that. You don't need a teacher for that. And, uh, it, it calms down your nervous system. We know this, right? But we don't do it. Or you could find a tool that allows you to focus on your inner power. And inner power is something that actually then energizes you, that gives you, gives you that, um, that, uh, perceived presence that, that, that, that you basically shine out, you know, that, that you, you have this brilliance inside of you and it shines out into the world. This light inside of you. So you could do this is, this would be an energy exercise. And it doesn't take long. It takes a few minutes, even seconds if you want, if you need it really quickly, you can do this in a few seconds. Once you have practiced it enough, you know, so it's really about becoming present in the moment, giving yourself permission to focus away from your numbers, from your urgencies, and from your deadlines and say, okay, I'm going to take this moment to recalibrate and then bring this newly gained energy into your work? Yes, and into your team. And that's also you could also call this almost a process of alchemize ation, right? We also in preparation for this, we want to alchemize or transmute our limitations, our beliefs, habits, emotions, anything that's holding us back. And that is the, the deeper work that we can do. And it's an ongoing process really. But first of all, we need to as, as I explained in my process, we need to assess, really assess what our deepest desires and intentions are and what truly matters to us. And then we can move forward in this step by step process, right?
00:15:41 Shreya: Yeah, I love that, that you brought it back to something so small and so simple. Because the truth is, the leaders who actually live this work are those who have learned to take very small, very honest pauses in the middle of busy days. And, um, before we end, like I, I, I want to ask you, like, if a leader listening today, um, is at the beginning of integrating their inner work with their outer leadership, what is the orientation you would offer them, not the system, the way of holding themselves through the integration.
00:16:18 Regina Huber: Well, again, it comes back to the same presence, right? What, what, uh, I mean, one simple question you could ask yourself in that situation is, am I fully in this? Where did I forget about myself here? It depends a little bit on the situation. Or if you're completely stressed out, then maybe take a bird's perspective and look at it and, uh, say. Uh, and ask, ask a question, a simple question again. And, and you said the word simple. I love simple because it's what we actually do it because we always believe that we don't have time for more complex, uh, processes. And we, and we also don't remember them so easily. Right. So the simpler the better. So what is that simple question? As you move, you imagine yourself moving out side of your situation and floating up into the air and taking that bird's perspective. And then ask yourself, what's the worst thing that could happen? And most of the time it's not as serious. So there's no use getting all worked up about it or stressed out about it, you know? So really take that perspective and then go from there and then you can move in again and say, okay, what's my next step?
00:17:49 Shreya: Yeah, I think this is a really very powerful and it is not about being a better leader externally. It is about being a more honest human internally. And thank you, Regina, for coming and sharing so much information. I think, uh, this is such an, a conversation that I think all the leaders are needed very much right now in this generation. And, uh, if after this, my listeners want to connect with you and want to learn more about you or about your work, then what's the best place to find you?
00:18:21 Regina Huber: Yeah, I would say because of the topic we touched on, I would like to share a link where they can get a little bit more inspiration about this and, uh, read more about it. It's, uh, transform your performance dot com slash success. Now what? I'm going to repeat that again, transform your performance dot com, which is my general website and then forward slash success. Now what? And then I also, you know, I have a YouTube channel, I have LinkedIn leadership newsletter, lots of resources, but if you go to my website, transform your performance dot com or to that specific page, transform your performance dot com forward slash success.
