Welcome to Barking Mad, a podcast by BSM Partners. We're your hosts, Dr. Stephanie Clark—
01:08
Jordan Tyler
n Tyler. Happy New Year! It's:01:49
Dr. Stephanie Clark
We should definitely have our favorite bloopers at the end.
01:52
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. That's a good one. That's a good one. I feel like there were so many unused bloopers. Like, I just kept, like, a folder of bloopers.
02:02
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Love it.
02:03
Jordan Tyler
And there are so many unused in there. We could probably fill an entire episode just with us being silly. So, yes, let's do that for sure.
02:10
Dr. Stephanie Clark
ke, our top three bloopers of:02:21
Jordan Tyler
I was going to say, like, any, like—one category of bloopers has to be you meowing on the mic. And it's just like, you do it so often that it's become like a trademark.
02:35
Jordan Tyler
Okay. I wanted to, like, quickly go through some of our top performing episodes, so episodes that y'all liked that our listeners really enjoyed. And I think it crosses over with maybe some of our favorite episodes to produce. So, we love that as a trend, as a thing. Stephanie, if I can totally just put you on the spot for a second, if you could guess what our top performing episode was from last year, which one do you think it would be and why?
03:06
Dr. Stephanie Clark
In my heart and my soul, I hope it is the cat litter one. One, everything from how not serious life was during that recording to how many cat puns we put in there to, like, me forcing my husband to listen to it. And I'm like, did you hear that? Did you did you catch that pun? Like, he didn't have ears and he wasn't listening. But, like, I dare I say that was, like, genius.
03:40
Jordan Tyler
Wow. Very nice. Very nice.
03:43
Dr. Stephanie Clark
It was fun.
03:44
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. We don't even need sound effects on this podcast because we have Dr. Stephanie Clark, the human sound effect machine.
03:51
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Pretended she was a cat growing up, and now it's just coming back to fruition.
03:55
Jordan Tyler
She's like, I knew that was going to serve me well.
03:57
Dr. Stephanie Clark
But seriously, I think about, like, “Litter Island,” like… mad genius.
04:03
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. Yeah. I can't. I can't remember whose. It was so it was such a beautiful thing because I remember it being Kait’s idea originally to like, “Okay, what if we frame this as like a dating game?” And were all like, that's such a good idea. And then I feel like from there, that was like where the avalanche of cat puns and, like, silliness started. And it just, like, kept snowballing and kept snowballing and we, like, totally delivered all the way through the final episode. It was amazing.
04:35
Dr. Stephanie Clark
And we took something like cat litter and made it so fun. So please tell me it's on there.
04:40
Jordan Tyler
It's on there. It's on there. It's number four. So, it's in the top five. I know. I was kind of like, not even three? Not even two?
04:47
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Listen, guys. If you haven't listened to it, listen to it. Your ears will not regret it.
04:53
Jordan Tyler
.:05:49
Jordan Tyler
But we did it. And we Stephanie and I basically, set ourselves up in there for, you know, ten hours a day just sat in there for three days straight and interviewed a ton of people… I think it was 27 interviews and twelve plus hours of content.
06:10
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I think my brain was, like, eking out of my ears. Like, the amount of attention and focus for each recording and each person, like, I was done. But let's talk about the first day. Like, usually Super Zoo, just to get a picture of this, guys, usually it is freezing. So, it's like a bajillion degrees outside in Las Vegas, like middle of the desert. And then you walk inside the trade show, and you are, like, layered up because it's usually freezing. But this year, something happened, and I think someone forgot their job was to turn on the air condition. And so, it was a thousand degrees in the show floor or on the show floor. And then within the box, it was hotter than that because the only real quote, unquote air condition is, like, pulling air from outside.
06:59
Dr. Stephanie Clark
So you're literally pulling hot air into a hot box of people just talking. I was like I think at the end of the day of the first day, were so delusional, like, so heat stricken. Like, we, like, came crawling out, and were like, Sandy from, like, SpongeBob, like, “Water! Water!”
07:16
Jordan Tyler
Like, “I need it!”
07:22
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Yep. It got better, but I was like, holy cow. It is so roasty toasty.
07:30
Jordan Tyler
Yep. That was pretty much my experience. Yeah. Yeah. I think on Friday morning, I think you were visiting, somebody's booth, and I sat down with a guy, and I forgot to turn the, like, ventilation. And, oh my god, I was like, I was in the interview trying to play it cool. Right? And trying not to let him know that I'm physically sweating and, like, wondering why I feel like I'm suffocating in this interview right now. And then we opened the door and I was like, oh, it's because I didn't turn the thing on.
07:58
Dr. Stephanie Clark
It's like Titanic in the scene where, like, she slaps her hand up against, like, the fogged window. You guys are like, Let us out. And like, you just see this handprint.
08:10
Jordan Tyler
Yeah, I think the funniest thing with all of that was were interviewing the Dr. Pol team, and this episode has yet to come out, so stay tuned for that. But were interviewing Charles Pol, Dr. Pol's son, and Michael, the guy that used to work on The Incredible Dr. Pol, the TV show on National Geographic. Anyway, we're sitting there and it's during the BSM Partners happy hour that we're doing in our booth. So, there's literally like 100 people just like surrounding us in this booth. And we're sweaty, we've been in this booth all day long, and there are so many people just standing around watching. There's the booth is see through, by the way. So, like, everybody can see exactly what's going on from any angle on the inside.
08:54
Jordan Tyler
And we're just sitting there, like, on display, like, in our natural habitats, and everybody was, like, you know, like, poking the glass.
09:03
Dr. Stephanie Clark
And it really came true. Like, don't feed the animals. They literally put the snack table right in front of the door. So, like, we couldn't even leave if we wanted to, but, like, the snacks were just right there. And anyone who's been to SUPERZOO knows eating is few and far between. You have a coffee for breakfast and this ridiculously huge meal for dinner, and that's it. And you're supposed to sustain yourself for seventy two hours on that. But, like, the snack table was, like, right there, and I'm like, “Snack…”
09:34
Jordan Tyler
Yeah, and then the bar was behind it too. Everybody getting their happy hour drinks. And I was like, oh my god.
09:40
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I just wanted water.
09:43
Jordan Tyler
Anything. Oh, yeah. 10/10 experience. 10/10 content. 10/10 going to wear T-shirts next year and bring extra water.
09:58
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Definitely doing it again.
10:01
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. Yeah. We're yeah. Yeah. We are. We have to. It was fun. It was a learning experience.
10:06
Dr. Stephanie Clark
If not, at least come by and see our shrimps bug shirts.
10:10
Jordan Tyler
True. Because those were pretty cool. We'll reprise those.
10:14
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I came across mine a couple days ago. I was like, “What is… Oh.”
10:18
Jordan Tyler
Speaking of shrimps is bugs, the insect protein insect ingredient rather episode that we did earlier this year was our third most popular episode of the year. “Bug Appetit,” if you will. And in there, obviously, Stephanie and I make a pretty good case that shrimps is bugs. And that's all I'm going to say. You're just going to have to go listen to learn more about that little Easter egg.
10:46
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I think it's at the end.
10:49
Jordan Tyler
Stephanie will help you cheat. We also do show notes for episodes. That's in the episode description, so you could probably find it there as well. I'm absolutely sure I marked it as a show note because I felt that it was a very important piece of the conversation.
11:05
Dr. Stephanie Clark
It was pivotal.
11:06
Jordan Tyler
I would say so. You know? Like, pretty foundational to everything.
:Dr. Stephanie Clark
So between SUPERZOO show floor and bugs, what fell between one and three?
11:19
Jordan Tyler
It was the DCM episode that we did with Daniel Schulof of KetoNatural. And I was kind of surprised that one wasn't the top one only because that might be the spiciest, steamin’-hottiest episode we've ever done. And I know those aren't words, real words that I just said, but oh my god was that episode spicy.
11:40
Dr. Stephanie Clark
It was like you take a bite and you hafafahahfhahfa.
11:42
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. Yeah. It's one of those. And you, like, need a glass of milk too. And at the same time, you also probably need to pop a bag of popcorn because, like, get your popcorn ready… She's juicy.
11:53
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I think more updates to come:12:02
Jordan Tyler
Oooh.
12:03
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I'm pretty sure more things were happening come November and December.
12:07
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. Some more research, perhaps, some more, exploration of the DCM—I like to say—
12:17
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Saga.
12:18
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. Saga is quite an apt term because it truly has been a saga.
12:24
Dr. Stephanie Clark
People say controversy, and I'm like, there's really no controversy around it. It's just research.
12:33
Jordan Tyler
No controversy ever in research. No.
12:35
Dr. Stephanie Clark
None. None whatsoever.
12:41
Jordan Tyler
But yeah. Yeah. The plot the plot thickened and will continue to thicken, apparently. And we're going to keep covering it because, by God, somebody's got to do it, you know?
12:52
Dr. Stephanie Clark
And we will do that for you. We will take it upon ourselves.
12:56
Jordan Tyler
Mhmm. We'll lock ourselves in a hot podcasting booth all day. I'll probably even eat a bug. There's probably other things I would do for you guys. Just saying.
13:07
Dr. Stephanie Clark
So wrapping it up, we've got SUPERZOO—
13:11
Jordan Tyler
Yep.
13:12
Dr. Stephanie Clark
—because let's just face it. We're all over the board here. In case you ever thought a podcast couldn't cover enough things, we’ve got SUPERZOO. We've got DCM. We have bugs. We have litter. We have… number five?
13:30
Jordan Tyler
So number five, I was surprised by, but it's the one we did about sustainable packaging. And really, it's about sustainable pet food packaging, but really, it's about the pet food industry's plastic waste problem. And I will say this kind of ties into perhaps my least favorite learnings from these podcast episodes because, like, that's why I love podcasting and journalism and interviewing people is you just get to learn so many new things and talk to people about things you would never, like, have a regular conversation about. But at the same time, some of those things you can't unlearn. And I'm like, I wish I could unlearn some of the unfortunate statistics I learned about recycling in the United States, but unfortunately, I can't.
14:14
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I think the scariest thing about that episode, one, right, like, the title is phenomenal. Like, we always want to know if something is a lie. Like, of course, I'm going to click and listen, but the amount of waste. And now, like, 'tis the season right now when we're recording and the amount of packaging that I am getting. And then I'm like, I bet you this was packaged in something else before it was packaged, and then it was sent to the Amazon warehouse. And then they repackaged in a package and added more packaging. And now I'm getting it packaged, and now I'm going to unpackage it to wrap it in more packaging so my daughter can unwrap it the package? I am the problem!
14:57
Jordan Tyler
It does. That's kind of the vibe that I was getting too when we were researching all this. I was like, oh my gosh. Even when I try to be mindful, I think the most frustrating thing for me was like, okay, so let's say I do take my used pet food bags all the way back to the retailer at the end of, you know, the month when the food bag is empty, and I put them in the bin and then I say goodbye. Right? I say, “Okay, bags. Goodbye. I hope that you make it to the recycling center and actually get recycled.” Except that like rarely actually ever happens with multilaminate plastics, which is what pet food bags are made of largely today.
15:37
Jordan Tyler
So, it's like, even you can have good intentions, you know, you can try not to shop online, you can try to, you know, do the curbside recycling or take it yourself, but it's really more of an infrastructure problem. And so, it's like, we can have the best intentions and carry those out, but the whole system is kind of broken for plastic recycling. I also learned a lot of sad things about how we export a lot of our plastic recycling to, like, developing countries and I’m like, oh, man… that seems like something we shouldn't do. But what do I know?
16:13
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Just a big womp womp.
16:14
Jordan Tyler
Womp womp. Yeah. That was kind of a that was more of a wompy womp kind of episode. But people seem to like it, and I hope at least people found it educational and helpful in deciphering some of the sustainability language that we see, like, on pet food packaging because it can be really hard to decipher.
16:34
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Mhmm. Absolutely. I'm sustainable. What does that mean? Yeah. I mean, around the holidays, it means I'm going to collect all the tissue paper and bags and bows, and I'm going to reuse them. So don't you dare write on marker who it's to. Just pass it to the person. We don't need any name tags… just kidding.
16:51
Jordan Tyler
Keep a note open on your phone. Okay?
16:53
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Yeah. Santa bag to Esther. Gotcha. Okay.
17:00
Jordan Tyler
Yeah, so, those are our top five. Again, learning about our recycling system. That was probably my least favorite learning this year and just like doing research for the podcast. I think maybe my favorite learning, not because I love this, but because I love the fact that I now know this, is that cats can get acne on their chin. You tell me that.
17:24
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Your cat, too, can get acne.
17:27
Jordan Tyler
And it's called comedones. See, I even remembered the word.
17:31
Dr. Stephanie Clark
There you go. You can, too, become a vet tech. What if you opened up, like, your own, like, store and you just, like, started, like, steaming cat chins to, like, open up the pores?
17:44
Jordan Tyler
o, actually, change of plans.:18:01
Dr. Stephanie Clark
—where you can have purr-fect skin too.
18:04
Jordan Tyler
She got purr-fect skin too. And then maybe on the side, we can do anal gland expressions by Dr. Clark. Because I know you just love doing that.
18:14
Dr. Stephanie Clark
We should name the feline facials She Fancy. So many cats are named Fancy. I at least know three.
18:22
Jordan Tyler
Okay. I feel like… Wait, wait, wait, wait. I don't think I know any.
18:28
Dr. Stephanie Clark
What? I feel like Fancy is, like, the equivalent of, like, a Sadie in dog terms.
18:33
Jordan Tyler
Like, I feel like you're correct. Like, I want to agree with you, but that when I think about it, I don't think I know any cats with the name Fancy.
18:42
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I know I know three Fancy cats.
18:44
Jordan Tyler
Are they fancy?
18:45
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Well, they claim to be.
18:47
Jordan Tyler
Well, we'll test that down here at Ooh She Fancy Feline Facials. Anyway, what fun things or things that you wish you could unlearn from episodes this year based on what you've had to research?
19:04
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I think the first one, I'm going to have to agree. The recyclable one, like, listening to and I'm going to butcher this, and we're going to have to add it in. But hearing someone talk about, like, the most beautiful city in the world and now, like, trash and clothes are just, like, washed ashore. Like, in my brain that is seared. And I have no idea if, like, my imagination is, like, what is truly it looks like, but it can't be worse. I think this second thing, and I'm going to it had and this is more of like I I needed to know. I needed to close the loop on this. We talked about the waste that insects. What is it? Frass. And I had to leave before the end of the episode, and you guys revealed what it stands for.
19:59
Dr. Stephanie Clark
And I never closed the loop on that, and it has bothered me still.
20:04
Jordan Tyler
I'm sorry. I'm laughing because her answer, I remember it vividly, and it is not it's not the, like, the scientific answer that you probably want. It's actually just a joke.
20:16
Dr. Stephanie Clark
No. That's I was thinking it was probably going to be something inappropriate or a joke. And that's why, like, I've like to this day, I'm like, I need to, like, Reddit this, but I don't think enough people on Reddit know this to get the answer I need.
20:29
Jordan Tyler
Okay. I won't say the guest. I will keep this confidential. We joke that it means, and we might have to bleep this out, but it means frass, F-R-A-S-S from the ***. It's like… that's it? That's really it? That's it?
20:50
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I had a feeling it was, like, something related to that, but I was like, I can't find it and it's bothering me. So, yes, it's perfect. When you look up Webster definition for frass, you're like, I now know what that means.
21:03
Jordan Tyler
Essentially, it's just insect waste. But, yeah, I liked her definition. It was much more visual. You know?
21:08
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Yeah. Thank you for closing the loop on that.
21:11
Jordan Tyler
Anytime. I'm sorry for leaving you hanging for that long. I didn't realize it was keeping you up at night.
21:16
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I just didn't realize it was I mean, there's a lot of things keeping me up at night, but that was one of the, like, fleeting thoughts at, like, 3AM. I'm like, I wonder whatever frass stands for.
21:27
Jordan Tyler
And, honestly, I still don't really know, but I do know that it's basically just bug poop.
21:32
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Yeah. I mean, it's fancier than bug poop.
21:34
Jordan Tyler
Frass!

And in case you don't believe in New Year's resolutions or you feel like you have to set one to leave us an awesome review. At the end of the day, it takes two minutes. You can have a New Year's resolution to leave barking mad a phenomenal review and be done with it before January second.
22:46
Jordan Tyler
Yeah, and then you’re resolved. Your whole year is resolved pretty much.
22:51
Dr. Stephanie Clark
You have been a success.
22:55
Jordan Tyler
Okay. Really quick. Stephanie, you have, teased the fact that you don't believe in New Year's resolutions, and I would love to hear your elevator rant about this.
23:07
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Unless they're giving us a review. So aside from giving us a review, I don't believe in them.
23:12
Jordan Tyler
Everybody else's New Year's resolutions count. Stephanie's do not. Don't get it twisted.
23:20
Dr. Stephanie Clark
My thing is, one, you should be your best self at any given moment, any given day. Right? And, like, even if you, like, are not your best self and it's a Monday, guess what? Tomorrow's Tuesday. Let's do it. Right? So, like, the fact that, like, I'm going to wait twelve months to better myself, like, come on. Like, you either do or you don't. Like, don't wait for one new year, which we know we're going to miss right for at least six months to set a new you. Second, new you? I don't want a new me. Like, I've worked really hard. I don't want to start from ground zero. Third, I have enough crap to do in December. Lord knows when January hits and it is so miserably gloomy and gray and all the joy of Christmas has eked out of our souls in the Midwest… The last thing I want to do is another thing.
24:18
Jordan Tyler
I just want to take the whole month off, please. Okay. I generally agree with that. I think that's part of the reason why they say every year, like, 50% of us give up on our New Year's resolution by like the end of the first month of the year. Right? It's just not sustainable. It's not a sustainable way to build habits. And it's okay to make small incremental improvements over time. You don't have to, you know, save the world on January 1. And then if you don't by January 3, you know, you're a failure. That's just that's not how it works.

Jordan Tyler
He does.
27:43
Dr. Stephanie Clark
And while you're on your journey of New Year's resolutions of liking all our social media, we will be revealing this to you.
27:51
Jordan Tyler
Yes. And his sassy snark. I'm sure you'll appreciate that too. He is a little snarky, but we love him for it.
27:58
Dr. Stephanie Clark
He's relatable, and he's personable. And he may just help teach your children one day.
28:04
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. He's just like us.
28:09
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Only hairier?
28:14
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. Can't speak for all of you, but surely he's hairier than most. Yes. But all this talk about bringing Rufus into the podcast, we would be remiss if we did not also talk about an addition to our podcast team. So, we recently hired Jacob Parker. He is here on this call, unfortunately, for him listening to everything that we're saying so that he can make us sound really amazing and smart later. But he is our post-production specialist. He is going to do amazing things for this podcast, taking it into the realm of video, making us way more fun and cool and relatable and timely on social media. So, definitely go check us out there if you're not following us already.

Jordan Tyler
I'm, like, having a hard time not sharing all of it because, like, I don't want to give away the whole cow, as they say. You know, I want you guys to still be surprised.
29:52
Dr. Stephanie Clark
As long as we're not giving away the milk for free, I guess.
29:54
Jordan Tyler
Well, you know.
29:57
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I'm going to write it down right here. We're going to be doing another series on the SUPERZOO show floor. So, if you're interested, get on the docket early because it's happening.
30:12
Jordan Tyler
Agree. Agree. Slots are limited this next year because Stephanie and I are taking a lunch break. Gee, dang it.
30:20
Dr. Stephanie Clark
And a bathroom break.
30:21
Jordan Tyler
Yeah. We are going to both the bathroom and to get a little snacky because, oh my gosh, that was so hard. I swear for the entire week, it wasn't until, like, Thursday of the week after SUPERZOO that I was able to, like, speak normally or, like, finish a sentence before totally losing my train of thought just because, oh my gosh, the focus and then conversation at SUPERZOO, we were locked in.
30:47
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Could you imagine if we presented all of that live? Like, how they wanted us to go live? Like…
30:53
Jordan Tyler
I was like, “No!”
30:56
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I'm like, sorry. It doesn't work. Oops. I'm not going to try.

I was like, I don't know why the speaker won't work. Oh well!
31:02
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Yeah. Jacob, if, this happens next SUPERZOO, you can't fix the speaker. And it's nothing against you. It's just we don't have the right cords and nor does Vegas.

Dr. Stephanie Clark
Ain't nobody got time, ain't nobody got time, ain't nobody got time for that!
34:22
Jordan Tyler
Oooh!
34:23
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Do you remember that?
34:24
Jordan Tyler
Was it a like a vine?
34:28
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Yeah. I got bronchitis. Ain't nobody got time for that.
34:34
Dr. Stephanie Clark
So, like, in my head, I'm picturing, like, this, like, bat dog. Like, *slurping.*
34:41
Jordan Tyler
Bat dog, bat dog, what you gonna do? What you gonna do when they come for you? Sorry. I couldn't help. I couldn't help it.
34:50
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Could you imagine that if you're, like, an avid, like, water skier and you're like, “Ah, I got carped.”
34:56
Jordan Tyler
I wonder if it's become a verb?
34:58
Dr. Stephanie Clark
First off, I mean, not Great Lakes, but if anyone is skiing in the Midwestern Riverbend, Mississippi, you deserve to be slapped.
35:11
Dr. Stephanie Clark
...is copper associated hepatopathy… Why? Hepatopathy. Hepa… Hepatopathy?
35:23
Jordan Tyler
Hepatopathy!
35:25
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Liver disease!
35:28
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Of regenerative organic agriculture... I don't know that why that word was so hard.
35:34
Jordan Tyler
It's the three words together that are hard, is what I'm finding. Because, like, you clear regenerative. Right? Which, that one's hard. Yeah. And then you have to say organic, and then you still have to say agriculture. It's like, okay.
35:47
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Instead of you're fired, you're carped.
35:50
Jordan Tyler
Forget about it.
35:51
Dr. Stephanie Clark
I'm gonna take them out to the fishes.
35:57
Jordan Tyler
You're gonna get carped, then you'll be sleeping with the fishes tonight.
36:00
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Then the green crabs are gonna come get you.
36:04
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Tell us what you got, Mike.
36:07
Jordan Tyler
Now over to you, Mike.
36:09
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Well, you see here, we're on invasive species. We should just call them walking fish! Like a walking taco. Oh…
36:20
Jordan Tyler
Okay. There's an idea. Walking fish, walking taco, walking fish taco.
36:26
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Delicious.
36:27
Jordan Tyler
I mean, that could sell.
36:28
Jordan Tyler
Now what are we talking about?
36:31
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Hang on. What episode am I on again? This isn't about kittens?
36:36
Jordan Tyler
They told me there would be kittens.
36:39
Dr. Stephanie Clark
Where's my kitten? Let my people voice their opinion...
