[0:00] Hello, this is Sky. You're hearing my own voice. And I'll be here with you until sleep. You don't need to listen closely. You can drift off whenever you like. There's nothing to get right tonight. For now, just let yourself be held by the sound of my voice. Let's begin.
[0:43] If this podcast has been keeping you company at night and you'd like to support me directly, membership is a beautiful way to do that. It includes ad-free listening and exclusive sleep stories. And it helps me continue sharing these calm little spaces with you. The link is in the description. You don't need to listen closely. You don't need to remember everything you hear. You don't need to follow every word or hold on to the story. You can simply allow my voice to be here with you, like a quiet companion beside you in the evening. And tonight, we're going to wander. somewhere new.
[1:53] We're going to leave the familiar rooms of the manor house behind for a little while and make our way toward a smaller, quieter part of the building, a room where time seems to move differently, a room where the air itself feels as though it's been softened by years of patience.
[2:20] A room where plants have been gathered, dried, blended, steeped, and cared for. Tonight, we are visiting the still room. So wherever you are now, perhaps you can begin to notice that you are arriving. Arriving in your own space arriving in this moment maybe you notice the surface beneath you the weight of your body resting, the places where you are held perhaps there's a part of you that's been carrying the day the conversations the thoughts the small things that needed doing, the things you remembered the things you forgot.
[3:25] The things that are still wandering about and for this little while you can set them down not forever, not needing to solve anything just allowing them to rest beside you as we take this slow walk together.
[3:53] The evening air around the manor is cool and gentle the gardens are quieter now, the paths that earlier carried footsteps and conversation have become still, there's a different feeling that comes with dusk of things settling back into themselves. The flowers that open themselves to the sun are beginning to close. The birds have grown quieter. The shadows from the trees stretch longer across the lawns. And as we walk along the stone pathway, away from the grander rooms of the house, we find ourselves moving toward a smaller building attached to the oldest part of the manor, a place that perhaps visitors would have passed without noticing, not a grand entrance, not a room designed to impress.
[5:10] But some were practical. Some were made for tending. The kind of room that quietly supported the life of the house. The kind of room where someone would have come early in the morning with a basket on their arm. Gathering. Preparing. Making. Remembering. The path beneath our feet is uneven in places, old stone worn smooth by countless journeys. The path does not need you to know exactly where you're going. It simply invites you onward. And as we approach the doorway, we notice it's not a large door, a simple wooden door aged by weather and seasons.
[6:14] The wood has darkened over the years the handle cool beneath your hand and before we enter we pause for a moment. This room, the still room carries a feeling of care. As we step inside the first thing we notice is the scent.
[6:41] Not one single scent but layers, the warm earthy smell of dried herbs.
[6:52] The sweetness of flowers, the faint freshness of crushed leaves, the woody scent of shelves and cupboards that have stood here for many years. There's something deeply grounding about the smell of plants, perhaps because they remind us of the earth, of seasons, of things growing slowly.
[7:24] Of things needing time. Nothing in this room has been rushed. The herbs hanging from the ceiling have taken months to become what they are. Seeds planted, plants tended, leaves gathered, flowers picked at the right moment, then carefully dried. Patiently waiting, above us, wooden beams cross the ceiling. And from these beams hang bundles of herbs tied with natural twine. Roles and rows of them, some small, some large. Some with delicate stems and tiny leaves. Some with flowers still holding their color. They hang upside down, gently swaying, whenever a breeze finds its way through the room.
[8:32] Perhaps there is lavender here, soft purple flowers gathered together in bunches, rosemary with its familiar scent and slender leaves, thyme, sage, mint, lemon balm. Perhaps old varieties of herbs that have grown in the manor garden for generations, there's something beautiful about seeing plants in this form not in a field, not growing but paused suspended, a moment between the garden and the bottle, between the earth and the remedy between what was gathered and what will eventually be made along the walls are shelves, wooden shelves filled with glass jars hundreds of them some clear some dark amber, some green glass inside are different colors.
[9:58] Golden liquids, deep green oils, pale powders, dried petals, seeds, roots, small treasures collected from the natural world. The jars sit quietly, each one holding its own story.
