If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out . . . 30 if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Jesus. Matthew 5:29, 30. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is Day 21 of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing. Jesus challenges our self-preservation instincts. We have a deep drive to avoid personal discomfort at all costs. In these words, Jesus presses us to consider the larger reality: immediate comfort may come at devastating cost—losing an eternal future of wonder and joy. We don’t like to think about such serious matters, but indeed the stakes in life are astronomical. A future of inconceivable delight hinges on the way we choose to spend our dash of time, now. Hopefully that makes us pause; makes us hold back from acting brashly; makes us thoughtful.
