Shownotes

Today our reading is entirely from the book of Psalms. For a moment, I had to pause and think, "What would the Bible be if the book of Psalms wasn't included?" I can't count the times in my life where I needed deep encouragement, strength, and hope, and I knew to open my Bible to Psalms. No matter what we're feeling in life, from joy to lament, to anger, discouragement, depression, anxiety, awe, exhaustion, humility, or gratitude, Psalms not only meets us where we're at, it takes us where we're supposed to be--reminding us that in all situations, we serve a King worthy of our worship.

Today's Reading: Psalm 6, 8-10, 14, 16, 19, 21

:

Welcome to the Dwelling Place from Aru Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and

today our reading is entirely

3

:

from the Book of Psalms.

4

:

For a moment, I had to pause and think?

5

:

What would the Bible be if the

Book of Psalms wasn't included?

6

:

I can't count the times in my life

where I needed deep encouragement,

7

:

strength, and hope, and I knew to

open my Bible to Psalms no matter

8

:

what we're feeling in life, from joy

to lament, to anger, discouragement,

9

:

depression, anxiety, awe, exhaustion.

10

:

Humility.

11

:

Gratitude.

12

:

The Book of Psalms not only meets

us where we're at, it takes us where

13

:

we're supposed to be, reminding

us that in all situations, we

14

:

serve a king worthy of our worship.

15

:

73 of the 150 Psalms are attributed to

David, who did sit as king over Israel.

16

:

But taken as a whole.

17

:

The Book of Psalms increasingly

looks to a future king who will

18

:

reign perfectly and is currently

seated on his throne in heaven.

19

:

The Psalms are rich with theology,

teaching and instructing us about the

20

:

truth and goodness of God's character.

21

:

But we were never meant to

sit with knowledge alone, but

22

:

rather to be moved to praise.

23

:

I love to think of David, a man who

defeated lions and bears and countless

24

:

enemies because he was also a man

who knew he was called to worship.

25

:

And if ever we or our kids think, you know

what, I'm just more of a stoic person.

26

:

I get to sit back during worship.

27

:

I just don't see that model in scripture.

28

:

I think God created all

of our personalities.

29

:

But our worship should lay aside

any self preservation, and give

30

:

the Lord the praise he is due.

31

:

Admittedly, that's gonna look a little

different for each of us, and it's not

32

:

something to hold in judgment, but as

we're guiding and training our families,

33

:

I think we can model it first by the

way that we rejoice to worship Christ.

34

:

It is something we'll pray for and

hope with expectation that each of

35

:

us in our families would worship

fervently, and we'll do that at the end.

36

:

Our first Psalm is chapter six.

37

:

It was written by David, and it's

a song of Lament, which is a Godly

38

:

way to express pain or sorrow.

39

:

It's also the first of

the penitent Psalms.

40

:

which simply means that it's

grieving the impact of sin

41

:

Oh Lord, rebuke me not in your anger,

nor discipline me in your wrath.

42

:

Be gracious to me, oh Lord.

43

:

For I am languishing, heal me, oh Lord.

44

:

For my bones are troubled.

45

:

My soul also is greatly troubled.

46

:

But you oh Lord.

47

:

How long turn, oh Lord, deliver my life.

48

:

Save me for the sake of your

steadfast love for in death.

49

:

There is no remembrance of you.

50

:

And she all who will give you praise.

51

:

I am weary with my moaning.

52

:

Every night I flood my bed with tears.

53

:

I drench my couch.

54

:

With my weeping my eye wastes away.

55

:

Because of grief, it grows

weak because of all my foes.

56

:

Depart from me.

57

:

All you workers of evil.

58

:

For the Lord has heard

the sound of my weeping.

59

:

The Lord has heard my plea.

60

:

The Lord accepts my prayer.

61

:

All my enemies shall be

ashamed and greatly troubled.

62

:

They shall turn back and be

put to shame in a moment.

63

:

The tone of chapter eight is

Thanksgiving, and there is the

64

:

sweetest, averse, tucked inside

65

:

Out of the mouth of babies and infants.

66

:

You have established strength

because of your foes to still

67

:

the enemy and the avenger.

68

:

Have you ever considered that

the cooing of your children is a

69

:

beautiful sound before the Lord and

that it could be praised to him?

70

:

At the triumphal entry when people

were praising Jesus, the Pharisees

71

:

told him to have the people stop

worshiping him, and he quoted this verse.

72

:

I think that can renew us just a

little bit to think that some of

73

:

those sounds that our children express

before they're even able to talk

74

:

could be magnifying the God of heaven.

75

:

Many beliefs.

76

:

Psalm nine was written by David as he was

reflecting upon his defeat of Goliath.

77

:

I'll read the first 10 verses.

78

:

I will give thanks to the

Lord with my whole heart.

79

:

I will recount all of

your wonderful deeds.

80

:

I will be glad and exalt in you.

81

:

I will sing praise to

your name, almost high.

82

:

When my enemies turn back,

they stumble and perish.

83

:

Before your presence for you

have maintained my just cause.

84

:

You have sat on the throne

giving righteous judgment.

85

:

You have rebuked the nations.

86

:

You have made the wicked Parish.

87

:

You have blotted out their

name forever and ever.

88

:

The enemy came to an end

in Everlasting Ruins.

89

:

They're cities you rooted out.

90

:

The very memory of them has perished,

but the Lord sits enthroned forever.

91

:

He has established his throne

for justice and he judges

92

:

the world with righteousness.

93

:

He judges the people with uprightness.

94

:

The Lord is a stronghold for

the oppressed, a stronghold

95

:

in times of trouble.

96

:

and those who know your name,

put their trust in you for you.

97

:

Oh Lord, have not forsaken

those who seek you.

98

:

Did you notice where our

righteous ruler reigns?

99

:

He is seated on the throne.

100

:

This is not a God who is pacing

or striving or struggling because

101

:

of his unparalleled strength.

102

:

He sits in sovereignty and goodness, and

he does not forsake those who seek him.

103

:

The focus of 10 is God's righteous

judgment on behalf of the oppressed.

104

:

arise.

105

:

Oh Lord, oh God.

106

:

Lift up your hand.

107

:

Forget not the afflicted.

108

:

Why does the wicked renounce God

and say in his heart, you will not

109

:

call to account, but you do see for

you note mischief and vation that

110

:

you may take it into your hands.

111

:

To you, the helpless commits himself.

112

:

You have been the helper

of the fatherless.

113

:

Oh Lord.

114

:

You hear the desire of the afflicted.

115

:

You will strengthen their heart.

116

:

You will incline your ear to do justice

to the fatherless and the oppressed.

117

:

So that man who is of the earth

may strike terror no more.

118

:

He is father of the fatherless, and he

commits himself to help those who are

119

:

helpless, afflicted, and needing strength

120

:

as chapter 14, recounts

the sin of mankind.

121

:

I see something that is evident

throughout the scripture.

122

:

We've already studied.

123

:

The Lord looks down from heaven on the

children of man to see if there are

124

:

any who understand who seek after God.

125

:

The God that called Abraham

and Moses and David.

126

:

He's always looking for those whose

hearts are his, and he loves that

127

:

you are here basking in his word,

chapter 16 has been titled The

128

:

Golden Psalm and even David's Jewel.

129

:

Preserve me, oh God.

130

:

For in you.

131

:

I take refuge, I say to

the Lord, you are my Lord.

132

:

I have no good apart from you.

133

:

As for the saints in the land,

they are the excellent ones.

134

:

In whom is all my delight.

135

:

The sorrows of those who run after

another, God shall multiply their drink

136

:

Offerings of blood, I will not pour

out or take their names on my lips.

137

:

The Lord is my chosen portion in my cup.

138

:

You hold my lot.

139

:

The lines have fallen for

me in pleasant places.

140

:

Indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

141

:

I bless the Lord who gives

me counsel in the night.

142

:

Also, my heart instructs me.

143

:

I have set the Lord always before me.

144

:

Because he is at my right hand.

145

:

I shall not be shaken.

146

:

Therefore, my heart is glad and

my whole being rejoices, my flesh

147

:

also dwells secure for you will

not abandon my soul to shield or

148

:

let your holy one see corruption.

149

:

You make known to me the path of life.

150

:

In your presence.

151

:

There is fullness of

joy at your right hand.

152

:

Our pleasures forevermore.

153

:

It's so beautiful, isn't it?

154

:

Can we say that we have no

good apart from the Lord?

155

:

Can we declare that we have a beautiful

inheritance in him and that he

156

:

gives us counsel even in the night?

157

:

Verse 11 has brought me lots of

hope and direction and confidence as

158

:

I've prayed over health issues and

other times of uncertainty that he

159

:

makes known to me the path of life.

160

:

And in his presence,

there's fullness of joy.

161

:

He's been so faithful to guide and direct

me, but I wanna start by dwelling with

162

:

him before I seek any outside answers.

163

:

So in this psalm, I see a reminder to

stay near to him in my decision making.

164

:

All of the years and experience that David

had as a shepherd, had plenty of time

165

:

to delight in the creation around him.

166

:

As I read Psalm 19, I like to imagine

a shepherd boy gazing up at the stars.

167

:

So here are some portions of that psalm.

168

:

The heavens declare the glory of God and

the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

169

:

Day-to-day, pours out speech.

170

:

And night to night reveals knowledge.

171

:

The law of the Lord is

perfect, reviving the soul.

172

:

The testimony of the Lord is

sure, making wisely simple.

173

:

The precepts of the Lord are

right, rejoicing the heart.

174

:

The commandment of the Lord is pure

enlightening the eyes, the fear of

175

:

the Lord is clean, enduring forever.

176

:

The rules of the Lord are

true and righteous altogether.

177

:

More to be desired are they than gold,

even much fine gold, sweeter also than

178

:

honey and drippings of the honeycomb.

179

:

Moreover, by them is your servant warrant

and keeping them there is great reward.

180

:

And the last verse of Psalm 19

is probably the prayer that I

181

:

pray most often over myself.

182

:

Let the words of my mouth and

the meditation of my heart

183

:

be acceptable in your sight.

184

:

Oh Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

185

:

I have to admit, there are times I just

don't trust what comes outta my mouth.

186

:

So if I'm headed to a mom's night or

to meet with a friend I just pray that

187

:

he would help my words to glorify him.

188

:

I think those verses about

God's word Would be an excellent

189

:

passage to memorize with our kids.

190

:

Our last Psalm for today is Psalm 21,

which focuses on the strength of the king

191

:

It begins, oh Lord, in your strength,

the king rejoices and in your

192

:

salvation how greatly he exalts.

193

:

You have given him his heart's desire.

194

:

And have not withheld the

request of his lips for you.

195

:

Meet him with rich blessings.

196

:

You set a crown of fine

gold upon his head.

197

:

He asked a life of you.

198

:

You gave it to him, length

of days, forever and ever.

199

:

His glory is great.

200

:

Through your salvation, splendor,

and majesty, you bestow on him for

201

:

you, make him most blessed forever.

202

:

You make him glad with the joy of your

presence for the king trusts in the Lord.

203

:

And through the steadfast love of

the most high, he shall not be moved.

204

:

Heavenly Father, we are truly grateful

for a God that meets us where we're at.

205

:

We thank you that in your word, we are

known and assured of your love, but as we

206

:

acknowledge the condition of our hearts.

207

:

May your word guide us in your goodness

and righteousness that we'd be

208

:

conformed to the image of your son Jesus.

209

:

Thank you that we have a beautiful

inheritance, that there is joy

210

:

in your presence, and that you

make known to us the path of life.

211

:

Guide us to dwell with you as we

make decisions great and small.

212

:

We pray our lives would be characterized

by a surrendered worship to you.

213

:

As we train our minds through singing

truth about you, we pray we'd find

214

:

refreshment and renewal, and we

want that for our families as well.

215

:

For our husband and our children,

regardless of demeanors and personalities,

216

:

may all of our mouths exalt you and

give you the praise that you are due.

217

:

Thank you that your word is

perfect and it revives our souls.

218

:

We ask that our kids would

desire it more than gold and to

219

:

delight in it more than honey.

220

:

And we thank you for the precious

sounds of praise that you have

221

:

ordained for our children.

222

:

May you tune our hearts

to delight in them.

223

:

Thank you, Jesus, that you are seated

on the throne inner seating for us.

224

:

It's in your name we pray.

225

:

Amen.
