Hi, Buckers here. Welcome to Just Make The Bloody Podcast (JMTBP!)
If “start a podcast” has been on your to-do list for ages whilst you tie yourself up in knots with chronic overthinking, we’re going to get along swimmingly.
This is a podcast about podcasting. It is also a podcast about visibility, confidence, and the joy of audio.
Come on in, and make yourself at home and let’s have a biscuit - we’ve got a podcast to make and we’re going to have a lovely time :)
In this episode:
This is the trailer, so it’s the actual podcast law (not a thing) that in this first ever installment of JMTBP you get the following:
We’ll be chatting to podcasters at all stages of their podcasting journey, and as an established producer but first time podcast host, I’ll be learning in the open, alongside you, unpacking what actually makes a great podcast. Join me as we explore everything from the practical stuff like equipment and recording set ups, to the stuff you don’t know you need to know (you know?) We’ll be digging into the bigger picture stuff like mindset and those all important ‘podcast objectives’ (and how we measure them) as well as the nitty gritty production details - prepare to get geeky with me because I could talk about this stuff ALL DAY.
About Buckers
I’m Buckers (aka Annabelle Buckland). ADHD-fuelled, 30-something and obsessed with <insert latest special interest here>
I’m an *award winning* (someone pass my trumpet so that I may toot it) podcast producer and founder of Decibelle Creative. I started my audio production career in radio but my passion started long before that, when little Buckers discovered story tapes (the Roald Dahl ones were my fave).
I’ve been making podcasts for other people since 2020, and I’ve been avoiding/over-thinking/freaking out about making my own podcast… since 2020. So in a nutshell, Just Make The Bloody Podcast is me quite literally slapping myself in the face with a wet fish of motivation, publicly.
Stick Around
Subscribe and stay in the loop with new episodes!
This is an independent podcast so it makes a ginormous difference to us when you hit follow / subscribe. It helps more people discover this podcast which is especially appreciated by podcasters who don’t have big marketing budgets to put their face on billboards and buses.
Pod-curious?
Do you have a burning question about podcasting? What’s your biggest barrier right now? No question is too silly, nothing is too obvious, and there are no mean kids here to scoff at you for not knowing the basics.

>> Buckers: Hello. You have found. Just make the bloody
Speaker:podcast. Congratulations. This is my little
Speaker:trailer, which is supposed to entice you in. So
Speaker:you're kind of on the front doorstep of my podcast
Speaker:right now, and I have to kind of convince you to
Speaker:come through the front door and take your shoes
Speaker:off and hang your coat up and let me give you a
Speaker:biscuit. And so I'm going to spend the next few
Speaker:minutes attempting to tell you who this podcast is
Speaker:for. Um, hopefully you and, uh, what you'll get
Speaker:from it if you were to become a fully fledged,
Speaker:official listener and to try and help you to get
Speaker:to know me as best I can in a few minutes. So I'm
Speaker:Buckers. I don't know if I've already said that,
Speaker:but that's who I am. My name is Annabelle
Speaker:Buckland. I used to work in radio. I was nicknamed
Speaker:Producer Buckers, and it stuck. So that's who I
Speaker:am. And who is this podcast for? To be perfectly
Speaker:honest, this podcast is for me first and foremost
Speaker:because I am literally my own target audience. Um,
Speaker:because this podcast is for anyone who needs to
Speaker:just make the bloody podcast. The reason I am, um,
Speaker:my own target audience is because as a podcast
Speaker:producer and a founder of my own podcast
Speaker:production business, we're called Decibelle
Speaker:Creative, in case you want to look us up. I
Speaker:started making podcasts for a living back in 2020,
Speaker:when everyone, every man and his dog, was
Speaker:launching a podcast. And I've been doing that
Speaker:consistently for the last six years. And over
Speaker:those last six years, anytime somebody asks me,
Speaker:what do you do for work? And I tell them, I'm a
Speaker:podcast producer, they always follow it up with,
Speaker:oh, so what's your podcast about? And then I have
Speaker:to explain, no, I don't make my own. I make them
Speaker:for other people. And then there's that really
Speaker:annoying but totally valid and logical question.
Speaker:Oh, so you're a podcast producer, but you don't
Speaker:have your own podcast? And then I just have to
Speaker:make some awkward attempt at, uh, justifying it
Speaker:because. Because I'm just so busy. I'm just. I'm
Speaker:just so busy making podcasts for other people
Speaker:because I'm in such high demand. I'm so popular.
Speaker:Don't ask me any more questions. And then I have
Speaker:to change the subject. And I've done all of the
Speaker:lists of ideas and all of the brainstorms and all
Speaker:the spider diagrams and all the vision boards.
Speaker:I've made lots of versions of podcast cover art
Speaker:because I tell myself the lie that, uh, If I have
Speaker:something visual in place that will feel like it's
Speaker:actually a real thing and then I'll actually be
Speaker:able to make it it. And it's a massive lie. I've
Speaker:made a launch plan which is essentially just
Speaker:another spreadsheet and I've still done nothing.
Speaker:So we will dig around a little bit deeper into all
Speaker:of the reasons why I have procrastinated so much.
Speaker:Podcastinated, if you will, in another episode.
Speaker:But for now I'm just going to try and keep this
Speaker:brief and tell you what I finally decided my
Speaker:podcast would will be. It will be a gigantic
Speaker:experiment. It's going to be a learning in the
Speaker:open with curiosity and a rejection of
Speaker:perfectionism kind of experiment where I
Speaker:essentially just have to get over myself and get
Speaker:on with it because I know there is no reason to be
Speaker:holding back anymore. So this is essentially me
Speaker:saying a gigantic, for goodness sake, just get on
Speaker:with it. To myself and sort of to you as well, but
Speaker:very much including myself in the camp of should
Speaker:have done this ages ago, but haven't because.
Speaker:Because scared. Um, there will be a bit more of an
Speaker:in depth trailer which might be better described
Speaker:as a pilot because it's a bit longer and I've
Speaker:wrangled my friend slash colleague Katie into co
Speaker:hosting with me, uh, just to a desperate attempt
Speaker:to keep myself on track and, um, to actually do it
Speaker:and get it done. So if you want to have a listen
Speaker:to that, if you're not fully sold, you're still on
Speaker:the doorstep, go and cheque that out. Um, but
Speaker:essentially if you know that you want to start a
Speaker:podcast but you just haven't managed to get it off
Speaker:the ground for whatever reason, whatever very
Speaker:valid reason that nobody here, not least me, is
Speaker:going to judge you for, or you're just kind of
Speaker:scratching around with a few ideas, you're a bit
Speaker:pod curious, hoping to make that term a thing.
Speaker:Along with podcastination, which I will be
Speaker:claiming full credit for, then this podcast is for
Speaker:you. And I want it to be a place that you can come
Speaker:and hang out and feel creative and inspired and
Speaker:welcome and like you are among friends and, uh,
Speaker:not a judgy person on social media saying, why
Speaker:haven't you done it yet? Because nobody does
Speaker:something well when they feel pressured into it.
Speaker:So that this podcast, I'm hoping will essentially
Speaker:be kind of your accountability partner to, uh, not
Speaker:hold, well, yeah, hold your hand and kind of drag
Speaker:you along a bit and get you from the idea of maybe
Speaker:doing it to actually doing it. And the Way that
Speaker:we're going to do that is by learning from those
Speaker:who are already, already doing it, already have
Speaker:launched a podcast and maybe they've been doing it
Speaker:for years or maybe they've only just recently
Speaker:launched, but we're going to be chatt to people
Speaker:and um, finding out what is it that makes a great
Speaker:podcast. I want to analyse everything from all of
Speaker:the bigger picture stuff like what your podcast
Speaker:objectives are and how you measure them down to
Speaker:the more kind of detail oriented stuff, the kind
Speaker:of nitty gritty production choices. And I want to
Speaker:talk about confidence and mindset and mindset
Speaker:around visibility as well as the kind of more
Speaker:practical stuff like what do you record with, what
Speaker:microphone do you get, how do you record, how do
Speaker:you make your interviews better? And who better to
Speaker:learn from than those who are already doing it. I
Speaker:have six years of experience of working with
Speaker:podcasters and I've got a, uh, pretty decent idea
Speaker:of what some of my favourite podcasts all have in
Speaker:common. So I want this to be a place that I can
Speaker:share that with you, but also I want to learn from
Speaker:others as well and I want to hear from you as well
Speaker:about what you would, would like to hear about on
Speaker:this podcast, what the podcasts that you love to
Speaker:listen to have in common. I just want this to be
Speaker:a, a place that we can share a load of ideas and,
Speaker:and learn together. So it's, this is definitely
Speaker:not going to be a kind of linear, step by step,
Speaker:this is how you make a podcast podcast. Those
Speaker:already exist and lots of people are doing them
Speaker:really well. And obviously we all know chatgpt
Speaker:exists. There's loads of information out there
Speaker:already. What I want this to be is, is this is
Speaker:more going to be a place to talk about the things
Speaker:that you don't necessarily know that you don't
Speaker:know. So the things that you're not already
Speaker:googling or typing into. ChatGPT. How do I do
Speaker:this? I want this to be a place to talk about the
Speaker:more nuanced side of things and um, not just the
Speaker:kind of nuts and bolts, but building confidence
Speaker:and learning to accept ourselves as the hosts that
Speaker:we are in this moment and not feeling the pressure
Speaker:to become a certain level of goodness at hosting a
Speaker:podcast before we launch it. So if that sounds
Speaker:interesting to you, if this sounds like the kind
Speaker:of place that you want to be and uh, you tend to
Speaker:treat things in your life as a bit of an
Speaker:experiment as well, come and join me as we put
Speaker:podcasting through that same lens of not needing
Speaker:it to be perfect straight away. And that being
Speaker:good enough, um, because I promise you, it is. So
Speaker:do hit subscribe if this sounds like your kind of
Speaker:thing, or if you're not quite sold yet, go on to
Speaker:whatever the next episode after this is going to
Speaker:be. And hopefully that will seal the deal. But
Speaker:either way, for goodness sake, shall we just make
Speaker:the bloody podcast? Thank you for listening to me.
Speaker:My name is Buckers, and I look forward to being in
Speaker:your ears again sometime soon. All right, bye
Speaker:then.
