Today, our Bible reading plan covers 2 Samuel 24, 1 Chronicles 21-22, and then Psalms 30, 97-99. We'll see a loving parent setting their child up to worship the Lord. We'll also have confirmation that though His anger is for a moment, God's favor is for a lifetime. How clearly is that displayed in the life of David?! Our first narrative for today displays one of the most controversial differences in scripture, but it's by no means a discrepancy! See this article from "Desiring God" for more clarity. Steph:

Welcome to The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

Today, our Bible reading plan covers

Second Samuel twenty-four, First

4

:

Chronicles twenty-one and twenty-two,

and then Psalms thirty, ninety-seven,

5

:

ninety-eight, and ninety-nine.

6

:

We'll see a loving parent setting

their child up to worship the Lord.

7

:

Today, We'll also have confirmation

that though His anger is for a

8

:

moment, God's favor is for a lifetime.

9

:

Our first narrative for today

displays one of the most controversial

10

:

differences in scripture, but

it's by no means a discrepancy

11

:

second Samuel twenty-four begins, " And

the anger of the Lord was kindled against

12

:

Israel, and He incited David against them,

13

:

Now I'll read the full account

from First Chronicles twenty-one.

14

:

Listen for the different

description it begins with

15

:

Steph: "Then Satan stood against Israel

and incited David to number Israel.

16

:

So David said to Joab and the commanders

of the army, ' Go, number Israel

17

:

from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a

report that I may know their number.'

18

:

But Joab said, ' May the Lord

add to His people a hundred

19

:

times as many as they are.

20

:

Are they not, my lord the king,

all of them my lord's servants?

21

:

Why then should my lord require this?

22

:

why should it be a cause

of guilt for Israel?'

23

:

But the king's word prevailed against

Joab" but God was displeased with

24

:

this thing, and he struck Israel.

25

:

And David said to God, " I have sinned

greatly in that I have done this thing.

26

:

But now, please take away the

iniquity of your servant, for

27

:

I have acted very foolishly."

28

:

And the Lord spoke to Gad, David's seer,

saying, " Go and say to David, ' Thus says

29

:

the Lord: Three things I offer you; choose

one of them, that I may do it to you.'"

30

:

So Gad came to David and said to him,

" Thus says the Lord: Choose what you

31

:

will, either three years of famine, or

three months of devastation by your foes,

32

:

while the sword of your enemies overtakes

you, or else three days of the sword

33

:

of the Lord, pestilence on the land,

with the angel of the Lord destroying

34

:

throughout all the territory of Israel.

35

:

Now decide what answer I shall

return to him who sent me."

36

:

Then David said to Gad, " I

am in great distress.

37

:

Let me fall into the hand of the Lord,

for his mercy is very great; but do

38

:

not let me fall into the hand of man."

39

:

So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel,

and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

40

:

And God sent the angel to

Jerusalem to destroy it.

41

:

but as he was about to destroy

it, the Lord saw, and he

42

:

relented from the calamity.

43

:

And he said to the angel who was

working destruction, " It is enough.

44

:

Now stay your hand."

45

:

And the angel of the Lord was standing by

the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

46

:

And David lifted his eyes and saw the

angel of the Lord standing between earth

47

:

and heaven, and in his hand a drawn

sword stretched out over Jerusalem.

48

:

Then David and the elders, clothed

in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

49

:

And David said to God, " Was it not I

who gave command to number the people?

50

:

It is I who have sinned

and done great evil.

51

:

But these sheep, what have they done?

52

:

Please let your hand, O Lord my God, be

against me and my father's house, but do

53

:

not let the plague be on your people."

54

:

Now the angel of the Lord had commanded

Gad to say to David that David should go

55

:

up and raise an altar to the Lord on the

threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

56

:

So David went up at God's word, which

he had spoken in the name of the Lord.

57

:

Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

58

:

He turned and saw the angel, and his four

sons who were with him hid themselves.

59

:

As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked

and saw David and went out from the

60

:

threshing floor and paid homage to

David with his face to the ground.

61

:

And David said to Ornan, " Give me

the site of the threshing floor, that

62

:

I may build it on an altar to the Lord.

63

:

Give it to me at its full price, that the

plague may be averted from the people."

64

:

Then Ornan said to David, " Take

it, and let my lord the king

65

:

do what seems good to him.

66

:

See, I give the oxen for burnt offerings,

and the threshing sledges for the wood,

67

:

and the wheat for a grain offering.

68

:

I give it all."

69

:

But King David said to Ornan, "No, but

I will buy them for the full price.

70

:

I will not take for the Lord

what is yours, nor offer burnt

71

:

offerings that cost me nothing."

72

:

So David paid Ornan six hundred

shekels of gold by weight for the site.

73

:

And David built there an altar to the

Lord and presented burnt offerings and

74

:

peace offerings, and called on the Lord.

75

:

And the Lord answered

him with fire from heaven

76

:

Speaker 52: is David being

punished for doing math?

77

:

At first it might seem so, but if you

recall in Psalm 27, " Some trust in

78

:

chariots, some in horses, but we trust

in the name of the Lord our God."

79

:

The word doesn't give us the exact

reason that David was sinning, but

80

:

it's likely he was building up pride

or confidence in his military rather

81

:

than in the strength of the Lord.

82

:

But It's clear he knew he

had sinful motivations.

83

:

There's a lot of debate over the fact

that both God and Satan incited David

84

:

to carry out the sin, but it's not a

contradiction because though God does

85

:

not cause sin, in his sovereignty, he can

use even Satan's actions to bring about

86

:

good for his children, and that means

you and I never need to fear the enemy.

87

:

I'll link a great article

about this in the show notes.

88

:

Did it strike you that Joab

89

:

Mr.

90

:

Rash, Impulsive, Avenger of Blood himself

was the one confronting David's sin?

91

:

David doesn't listen, and

Joab submits to his authority.

92

:

The people of Israel

face severe consequences.

93

:

It's as though God is saying, "You

wanna count how many you have?

94

:

Well, I'm gonna wipe out

some of your confidence."

95

:

But in God's faithfulness, he uses

David's sin to pave the way for Jerusalem

96

:

to be the location of the new temple.

97

:

This location of Ornan the Jebusite

becomes the future location of Solomon's

98

:

temple, also one day of Herod's temple,

and most importantly, it's where Jesus

99

:

sacrificed to cover all of our sin.

100

:

Tradition also tells us that this is

where the Lord did not allow Abraham

101

:

to sacrifice his son, but promised

God Himself would send His Son.

102

:

First Chronicles calls this worshiper

of Yahweh Ornan because it reveals

103

:

that even though he wasn't an

Israelite, he was following the God of

104

:

scripture, and that's his Hebrew name.

105

:

David tells him I won't give to the

Lord what I didn't sacrifice to provide.

106

:

Sometimes our faith costs something.

107

:

And we can train our kids that we don't

worship the God of the Bible because

108

:

it's easy, but because He's worthy.

109

:

Steph: Now let's turn to First

Chronicles chapter twenty-two,

110

:

beginning in verse five.

111

:

For David said, " Solomon my son

is young and inexperienced, and the

112

:

house that is to be built for the Lord

must be exceedingly magnificent, of

113

:

fame and glory throughout the lands.

114

:

I will therefore make preparation for it."

115

:

So David provided materials in

great quantity before his death.

116

:

Then he called for Solomon his son

and charged him to build a house

117

:

for the Lord, the God of Israel.

118

:

David said to Solomon, " My son, I

had it in my heart to build a house

119

:

to the name of the Lord my God.

120

:

But the word of the Lord came to

me saying, ' You have shed much

121

:

blood and have waged great wars.

122

:

You shall not build

123

:

Speaker 45: a house to my name

because you have shed so much

124

:

blood before me on the earth.

125

:

Behold, a son shall be born to

you who shall be a man of rest.

126

:

I will give him rest from all his

surrounding enemies, for his name

127

:

shall be Solomon, and I will give

peace and quiet to Israel in his days.

128

:

He shall build a house for my name.

129

:

He shall be my son, and I will be

his father, and I will establish

130

:

his royal throne in Israel forever.

131

:

Steph: Now, my son, the Lord be

with you so that you may succeed in

132

:

building the house of the Lord your

God as he has spoken concerning you.

133

:

Only may the Lord grant you discretion

and understanding that when he gives

134

:

you charge over Israel, you may

keep the law of the Lord your God.

135

:

Then you will prosper if you are careful

to observe the statutes and the rules

136

:

that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel.

137

:

Be strong and courageous.

138

:

Fear not.

139

:

Do not be dismayed.

140

:

With great pains, I have provided for the

house of the Lord one hundred thousand

141

:

talents of gold, A million talents

of silver and bronze and iron beyond

142

:

weighing, for there is so much of it,

timber and stone too I have provided.

143

:

To these you must add.

144

:

You have an abundance of workmen,

stonecutters, masons, carpenters, and all

145

:

kinds of craftsmen without number, skilled

in working gold, silver, bronze, and iron.

146

:

Arise and work.

147

:

The Lord be with you.

148

:

David also commanded all the leaders of

Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,

149

:

Is not the Lord your God with you?

150

:

And has he not given

you peace on every side?

151

:

For he has delivered the inhabitants

of the land hand, and the land is

152

:

subdued before the Lord and his people.

153

:

Now set your mind and heart

to seek the Lord your God.

154

:

Arise and build the sanctuary of

the Lord God, so that the ark of the

155

:

covenant of the Lord and his holy

vessels of God may be brought into a

156

:

house built for the name of the Lord.

157

:

David's fatherhood includes grievous

failures, but here is a father

158

:

setting his son up for success.

159

:

With great pains, even though David

isn't the one to build the temple, he

160

:

has provided his son with everything

he needs to do the work of the Lord.

161

:

He didn't do it for him.

162

:

Solomon will still have

a lot of work to do.

163

:

But David has eliminated nearly every

barrier to his son's faithfulness.

164

:

And the weights of these

precious metals will astound you.

165

:

The amount of gold would convert to

about three thousand seven hundred

166

:

and fifty tons, and the silver

thirty-seven thousand five hundred tons.

167

:

Instead of wallowing in

his sin and failures,

168

:

david rejoices in the God who

is his Savior and paves the

169

:

way for God to be glorified.

170

:

Even if it takes great pains, Let's

pave the way for our kids to honor Him

171

:

Psalm 30 Encourages us, sing praises

to the Lord, O you his saints,

172

:

and give thanks to his holy name.

173

:

For his anger is but for a moment,

and his favor is for a lifetime.

174

:

Weeping may tarry for the night,

but joy comes with the morning.

175

:

You have turned for me

my mourning into dancing.

176

:

You have loosed my sackcloth and clothed

me with gladness, that my glory may

177

:

sing your praise and not be silent.

178

:

O Lord my God, I will

give thanks to you forever

179

:

heavenly Father, we proclaim that you

are the source of all joy, and even when

180

:

our sin causes mourning and weeping, you

are a God that brings beauty from ashes.

181

:

As we read of this father setting

his son up for success, I pray

182

:

that we as parents would be

diligent to defeat patterns of sin

183

:

so that there aren't any barriers for

our children to worship and glorify you.

184

:

Help us to model a life of

integrity and faith before them.

185

:

But ultimately, we rejoice that even when

we fall, you and your Son are glorified.

186

:

It's in your righteousness and your

perfection that we stand, Jesus,

187

:

and we rejoice that even in our

failure, your name will be lifted high.

188

:

Amen.
