Word of the Day: telegraph, noun and verb. From the Greek, tele meaning far, graphein meaning to write, far writing.
It came into English through French in the early 1800s as a device for sending compressed messages across distance.
But it's the verb I'm after this week, to telegraph something means to reveal your next move before you make it.
