“The River in the Mist”

Please enjoy:

by Dwale, Part 2 of 2

Please enjoy:

She had done it. A sleepless night,

Please enjoy:

one spent fretting that her ploy would be discovered, or that her treasure would be found and stolen,

Please enjoy:

but in the pre-dawn hours she had pretended to take her leave of the trading post

Please enjoy:

and hidden her sled in the woods.

Please enjoy:

Then, having found the drift into which she had tossed the package of lenses,

Please enjoy:

she had darted in to recover them.

Please enjoy:

Squirrels lack the which allows other animals to see in low light;

Please enjoy:

she had gone in almost blind.

Please enjoy:

But, she had burned the spot into her memory and knew it even when all she could see

Please enjoy:

were faint silhouettes.

Please enjoy:

She had done it, that was all she could think now.

Please enjoy:

The weight of concern had fallen from her shoulders.

Please enjoy:

She was going back to her little village by the sea,

Please enjoy:

back to her dear Miki,

Please enjoy:

and her heart was so light that she could have flown.

Please enjoy:

One more step remained:

Please enjoy:

to get to the docks, which were only two days’ walk from the scrapyard if she made good time.

Please enjoy:

There she would barter her way onto a boat

Please enjoy:

and ride the current home.

Please enjoy:

With the lenses now safely in her possession,

Please enjoy:

she could afford to part with every last grain of her tobacco if she had to,

Please enjoy:

and still clear her debts when she returned.

Please enjoy:

It was all so simple.

Please enjoy:

Soon, she would be out of the blasted cold.

Please enjoy:

She could almost smell her own bed,

Please enjoy:

and feel the warmth of Miki’s arms.

Please enjoy:

There was nothing to stop her.

Please enjoy:

Nothing could stop her.

Please enjoy:

She was able to live in that happy illusion until the morning of the second day,

Please enjoy:

when the sky began to darken

Please enjoy:

and the wind started to howl like riled wolves.

Please enjoy:

There in the spruce-laden foothills

Please enjoy:

she was close enough to the mountains to get caught in the unpredictable storms

Please enjoy:

that swept down from the heights.

Please enjoy:

But even then she wasn’t yet afraid,

Please enjoy:

for the whole of her life had been spent in these stark climes,

Please enjoy:

and she knew the particulars of survival with no less intimacy than she knew her own teeth.

Please enjoy:

There was a tent folded in her pack,

Please enjoy:

and some pemmican and seedcake,

Please enjoy:

enough for a few days if she stretched it.

Please enjoy:

The storm would have moved on by then.

Please enjoy:

Still, she was loath to stop and wait

Please enjoy:

when she was less than a day’s walk to the docks.

Please enjoy:

That a storm was coming was indisputable,

Please enjoy:

but it was not yet upon her

Please enjoy:

and she might, if conditions favored,

Please enjoy:

reach her destination before it overtook her.

Please enjoy:

Breathing deep through fluttering nostrils,

Please enjoy:

she shut her eyes and sampled the air,

Please enjoy:

which was dry and had none of the faint, dank vegetable scent

Please enjoy:

that portended inundation.

Please enjoy:

In the branches overhead, she saw the scales of the long,

Please enjoy:

russet pinecones spread wide and open,

Please enjoy:

as they tended to be when the humidity was low.

Please enjoy:

She stood there, weighing the evidence,

Please enjoy:

then sighed, re-shouldered her sled line, and went onward.

Please enjoy:

She would be in no small jeopardy if a blizzard were to catch her unawares,

Please enjoy:

but she was satisfied that she could continue a while

Please enjoy:

so long as she watched the skies

Please enjoy:

and was prepared to shelter at the first sign of trouble.

Please enjoy:

It was regrettable, then,

Please enjoy:

that the misfortune which found her

Please enjoy:

was of a sort she needed more than a tent and rations to survive.

Please enjoy:

Her sense for the weather proved accurate.

Please enjoy:

By the time the winds died and the first snowflakes began to drift groundward,

Please enjoy:

it was late afternoon

Please enjoy:

and she was within shouting distance of the river.

Please enjoy:

Let the storm do its worst,

Please enjoy:

she had but to climb one last hill

Please enjoy:

and she would be looking down at the dock-master’s shack,

Please enjoy:

where there would be a fire burning and a dry floor.

Please enjoy:

She spurred her aching legs cheerfully up the slope,

Please enjoy:

the burdensome weight of her sled forgotten,

Please enjoy:

while the snow falling about her may as well have been confetti to celebrate her arrival.

Please enjoy:

So pleased was she in her thoughts

Please enjoy:

that her typical wariness,

Please enjoy:

a hallmark and virtue of the squirrel tribe,

Please enjoy:

was buried underneath her excitement.

Please enjoy:

Otherwise, she might have noticed the lack of smoke from the dock-master’s chimney,

Please enjoy:

which she should have seen trailing over the hill.

Please enjoy:

Neither had she noticed

Please enjoy:

the eyes peering out at her through the trees,

Please enjoy:

not until someone made a careless step

Please enjoy:

and snapped a branch which had been hidden under the snow.

Please enjoy:

That brought her short ears upright,

Please enjoy:

and her eyes opened to fullness,

Please enjoy:

wild and searching

Please enjoy:

as she whirled around on the figures emerging from their cover.

Please enjoy:

The four men she saw all had differing phenotypes,

Please enjoy:

a wolf, the largest chimera of the four,

Please enjoy:

was nearest her, flanked by a white fox and a wolverine on his left,

Please enjoy:

and a greying, raw-boned cougar on his right.

Please enjoy:

All of them were dressed in threadbare rags,

Please enjoy:

sunken-eyed and thin as saplings.

Please enjoy:

Strands of conversation she’d had with the moose back in the scrapyard

Please enjoy:

floated into her memory unbidden.

Please enjoy:

They get desperate this time of year…

Please enjoy:

a pit of bones with bite marks all over them…

Please enjoy:

She brought her air-gun around from its shoulder sling.

Please enjoy:

It was an unwieldy contraption she’d pieced together from high-pressure hand-pumps

Please enjoy:

salvaged from the ruins of a sporting goods store,

Please enjoy:

about the size of shotgun without a stock.

Please enjoy:

Three tubes extended from the receiver:

Please enjoy:

the lowermost was the air reservoir,

Please enjoy:

while the central tube was the barrel.

Please enjoy:

The uppermost, shorter than the other two,

Please enjoy:

was the magazine.

Please enjoy:

A laser pointer mounted to the barrel did

Please enjoy:

duty for a sight.

Please enjoy:

On the right side of the gun was a whopping great pressure gauge

Please enjoy:

which was far too big to be practical,

Please enjoy:

but it was the only one she’d had lying around the shop.

Please enjoy:

The trigger had begun life

Please enjoy:

as a light-switch.

Please enjoy:

They stopped when she leveled it at them.

Please enjoy:

She took the opportunity to turn on the sight,

Please enjoy:

and then to jerk back on the bolt

Please enjoy:

that held the magazine closed, which made a satisfying “ka

Please enjoy:

-chunk” as the mechanism loaded a ball into the firing chamber.

Please enjoy:

“Stay back,” she warned,

Please enjoy:

training the red dot on the wolf’s forehead.

Please enjoy:

“I mean it!” They laughed at her,

Please enjoy:

recognizing the air-gun for what it was

Please enjoy:

and perhaps thinking such a device could do them no more hurt than a flesh wound.

Please enjoy:

They continued to advance,

Please enjoy:

unafraid, the wolf flashing a grin of yellowed fangs.

Please enjoy:

But while it was true that her weapon had far less muzzle energy than a firearm of the same size,

Please enjoy:

it fired seventeen-millimeter ball bearings

Please enjoy:

with enough velocity to punch through a phonebook.

Please enjoy:

She knew that much from testing it.

Please enjoy:

If it could do that,

Please enjoy:

then it could smash into a man’s skull with ease.

Please enjoy:

“Why don’t you put down your little BB gun, squirrely-girly?”

Please enjoy:

The wolf’s hand moved to unbuckle his belt,

Please enjoy:

where she saw for the first time

Please enjoy:

that he had a pistol holstered there,

Please enjoy:

and a massive bulge behind his zipper.

Please enjoy:

“We just wanna play wi

Please enjoy:

-“ A sharp pneumatic crack echoed through the forest.

Please enjoy:

The ball bearing

Please enjoy:

had struck him on the edge of the eye socket,

Please enjoy:

caving fur and flesh and bone

Please enjoy:

in on his cranial cavity.

Please enjoy:

His right eyeball, dislodged and partially dragged up into the wound,

Please enjoy:

shone white, while the other focused on her a moment in disbelief

Please enjoy:

before glazing over.

Please enjoy:

He collapsed, dead before he hit the ground,

Please enjoy:

a smile still on his lips.

Please enjoy:

A mixture of blood and cerebrospinal fluid gushed,

Please enjoy:

steaming, onto the ground,

Please enjoy:

melting frost as it darkened the earth like a stain.

Please enjoy:

That was when the fox said,

Please enjoy:

“Holy shit!” The three remaining bandits scattered;

Please enjoy:

she didn’t wait around to see what they meant to do.

Please enjoy:

She snatched up the line of her sled

Please enjoy:

and dashed up the hill as fast as her lithe frame could take her

Please enjoy:

while dragging her belongings.

Please enjoy:

Once at the top, thinking fast and certain of pursuit,

Please enjoy:

she got behind her sled

Please enjoy:

and leaned her whole weight into it,

Please enjoy:

her boots digging furrows in the snow as she marched it towards the incline.

Please enjoy:

Once the nose began to tip downwards,

Please enjoy:

she leapt atop her baggage and clung tight.

Please enjoy:

At first, she moved no faster than she might have done running,

Please enjoy:

and wondered in a panic if she might be better served by her feet,

Please enjoy:

but the speed increased,

Please enjoy:

and increased more

Please enjoy:

until she began to wonder the same thing over again, but for the opposite reason.

Please enjoy:

This was the windward side of the hill,

Please enjoy:

sparser of vegetation than the other slope had been,

Please enjoy:

but far from devoid of it.

Please enjoy:

Tree-trunks swooshed by her face,

Please enjoy:

dark blurs that passed so close

Please enjoy:

she felt her whiskers brush them.

Please enjoy:

At such speed, the alternation between the day and their shadows

Please enjoy:

was like a strobe-light.

Please enjoy:

She leaned one way or the other in a futile attempt to control her descent,

Please enjoy:

but the sled was meant to be towed, not ridden,

Please enjoy:

and had no steering mechanism whatsoever.

Please enjoy:

When she saw the crooked root protruding from the earth

Please enjoy:

near the bottom of the hill,

Please enjoy:

she knew she was going to hit it and could do nothing more

Please enjoy:

than shut her eyes and hope.

Please enjoy:

The dreaded impact did not come.

Please enjoy:

The root, when the rails connected with it,

Please enjoy:

ramped her forward in a shallow arc.

Please enjoy:

Weightless of a sudden,

Please enjoy:

she and her sled parted ways mid-air.

Please enjoy:

It could not have been more than a couple of seconds,

Please enjoy:

but it was as if she had grown wings.

Please enjoy:

She never felt the moment when physics reasserted its harsh rule over her person;

Please enjoy:

when she hit the ground,

Please enjoy:

her world went black.

Please enjoy:

Someone was shouting.

Please enjoy:

She sat up in the snow, uncertain of the why and where regarding her circumstances,

Please enjoy:

dazed by the force of her landing.

Please enjoy:

She was beside the fenced-in area of the dock-master’s dwelling,

Please enjoy:

where he kept a small collection of fishing boats.

Please enjoy:

Her sled was an arm’s length away,

Please enjoy:

upside-down where it had struck the ground nose-first.

Please enjoy:

If she had not fallen the way she had,

Please enjoy:

it might well have crushed her. The shouting

Please enjoy:

continued. Only when she saw two of the bandits dashing down the slope in a reckless frenzy

Please enjoy:

was the gravity of the situation restored to her spinning mind.

Please enjoy:

She stood without even taking time to check if she had broken bones,

Please enjoy:

intent on begging aid from the dock-master,

Please enjoy:

but saw there was a note fixed to the dark window of the door to his shack.

Please enjoy:

It was Inuktitut

Please enjoy:

transliterated into English letters,

Please enjoy:

and she couldn’t read a word of it, but then,

Please enjoy:

she didn’t need to be able to read it to guess what it meant.

Please enjoy:

He wasn’t there. Some emergency, some twist of chance had called him away with his family.

Please enjoy:

She was on her own.

Please enjoy:

The bandits would be on her in seconds.

Please enjoy:

Knife out, she cut the ropes securing her pack to the sled:

Please enjoy:

she couldn’t leave it,

Please enjoy:

it had too much of her and Miki’s life inside.

Please enjoy:

She seized it by one end and swung it around with her arms extended,

Please enjoy:

in the manner of the Olympic hammer-toss.

Please enjoy:

Only two minutes earlier

Please enjoy:

and she would not have believed herself capable of such a feat,

Please enjoy:

but the adrenaline was hot in her veins and with a bestial grunt

Please enjoy:

she heaved the pack over the fence

Please enjoy:

and re-sheathed her blade.

Please enjoy:

Now it was her turn.

Please enjoy:

Her mitten-like boots let her grip the chain

Please enjoy:

-link as though with hands; she scrambled up the fence with the same ease she might have mounted a staircase, but the fox,

Please enjoy:

fast as a flash, was on her before she could complete the transit,

Please enjoy:

his hand clamped around her ankle

Please enjoy:

like a metal snare.

Please enjoy:

She grabbed her air-gun.

Please enjoy:

Once she pulled the bolt to let ammo into the firing chamber, all that kept it from rolling down the barrel was a pair of rubber prongs.

Please enjoy:

Because of this, it could not reliably shoot straight down,

Please enjoy:

but she didn’t have a free hand to operate it even had it been otherwise.

Please enjoy:

Instead, she jerked back on the bolt

Please enjoy:

and angled the barrel at the fox’s head.

Please enjoy:

A heavy steel ball-bearing rolled out

Please enjoy:

and pelted him on the nose with a muffled thump. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to make him yelp and let go, to let her scurry

Please enjoy:

the rest of the way over the top.

Please enjoy:

The fox recovered

Please enjoy:

and sprang to catch the end of her tail,

Please enjoy:

and might have gotten it, too,

Please enjoy:

had he been a split-second earlier, but fell back on his butt with only a fist-full of white fur for his trouble.

Please enjoy:

He growled like a feral animal,

Please enjoy:

humiliated but unhurt,

Please enjoy:

and more intent than ever on doing her harm.

Please enjoy:

Rather than attempt to scale the fence as she had done,

Please enjoy:

he went for his pistol, a battered old piece with a rusty slide,

Please enjoy:

drew, pointed it at her

Please enjoy:

and pulled the trigger.

Please enjoy:

Nothing happened.

Please enjoy:

A confused look spread over his face like spilt water.

Please enjoy:

She would later puzzle out what it must have been,

Please enjoy:

that the scarcity of rounds meant this fellow had little to no practice with his weapon.

Please enjoy:

He had forgotten to switch off the safety,

Please enjoy:

nothing more than that,

Please enjoy:

but it was enough.

Please enjoy:

She brought the laser sight, still switched on from earlier,

Please enjoy:

to the center of his ribcage, and fired.

Please enjoy:

They both stood there and looked at each other,

Please enjoy:

dumbfounded. Her shot had collided with the fence wire,

Please enjoy:

and punched through, but the resistance had been enough to deflect her projectile

Please enjoy:

and make it veer off target.

Please enjoy:

Now the fox remembered the safety.

Please enjoy:

He toggled it, pointed the gun at her and fired blind,

Please enjoy:

frantic to get her before she got him.

Please enjoy:

Her next shot went off at the same time as his own:

Please enjoy:

hers striking him true this time, right in the heart,

Please enjoy:

while his caught her in the left pectoral region,

Please enjoy:

just above the breast.

Please enjoy:

He staggered backwards

Please enjoy:

and went down onto one knee, panting,

Please enjoy:

then tilted face-first into the snow.

Please enjoy:

Pain radiated through her chest,

Please enjoy:

bright and hot as molten iron.

Please enjoy:

Her left arm, which had been bracing her air-gun a moment before,

Please enjoy:

fell slack and deadened.

Please enjoy:

She tried to move it and found the explosion of pain so severe that she abandoned the attempt at once.

Please enjoy:

She felt the bullet whiz by her face before she heard it.

Please enjoy:

There were still two bandits out there, she remembered,

Please enjoy:

and they were still trying to kill her.

Please enjoy:

She let the air-gun return to its resting place on her side

Please enjoy:

and, with her remaining good arm,

Please enjoy:

hauled her pack over to a canoe by the river shore, trailing blood.

Please enjoy:

With the last of her fading strength,

Please enjoy:

she slung her gear into the boat,

Please enjoy:

pushed it into the water,

Please enjoy:

and slumped into it.

Please enjoy:

She drifted with the current.

Please enjoy:

The gunshots had stopped;

Please enjoy:

her pursuers must have given up trying to hit her at that range.

Please enjoy:

The sound of wind and running water was almost intoxicating

Please enjoy:

when mingled with her exhaustion,

Please enjoy:

and she might really have fallen asleep

Please enjoy:

were it not for the sound of something hard banging against the canoe’s metal hull.

Please enjoy:

Once she caught her breath,

Please enjoy:

she dragged herself onto her knees and had a cautious look around.

Please enjoy:

She had launched her craft straight into an ice floe.

Please enjoy:

But maybe that was good?

Please enjoy:

Surely, she thought,

Please enjoy:

the bandits wouldn’t be so foolish as to come after her,

Please enjoy:

with a storm at their back and a river full of ice.

Please enjoy:

But gazing back at the dock-master’s place,

Please enjoy:

she saw three of them,

Please enjoy:

the two living ones

Please enjoy:

dumping the dead fox into a flat-bottomed motorboat.

Please enjoy:

To eat, she realized.

Please enjoy:

“You’re gonna pay, tree-rat,”

Please enjoy:

the old cougar hollered from the shoreline.

Please enjoy:

“You hear me? You’re gonna pay!”

Please enjoy:

So, they meant to give chase after all.

Please enjoy:

Wincing from the anguish on the left side of her body, she released the catch that held the canoe’s propeller out of the water when not in use,

Please enjoy:

and lowered it down into the freezing river.

Please enjoy:

The smaller hunks of ice were not much threat,

Please enjoy:

but there were pieces the size of boulders all around her,

Please enjoy:

bobbing and tumbling in the turbulent current.

Please enjoy:

To be trapped between two of those would crumple her aluminum craft like a soda can.

Please enjoy:

Praying that the battery was charged,

Please enjoy:

she pressed the starter.

Please enjoy:

An LCD screen flickered to life,

Please enjoy:

showing the power

Please enjoy:

-pack at forty-six percent capacity.

Please enjoy:

Well, that was better than nothing.

Please enjoy:

She had grown to womanhood in a village beside the sea,

Please enjoy:

not far from the mouth of this very river,

Please enjoy:

and while not a fisherwoman,

Please enjoy:

yet she knew her away around a boat.

Please enjoy:

Limbs sluggish with exhaustion,

Please enjoy:

she opened up the throttle and threaded her way through the floe,

Please enjoy:

with the sun setting,

Please enjoy:

the bitter winds and current

Please enjoy:

threatening at every turn to capsize or crush her,

Please enjoy:

to drown or otherwise pull her down into oblivion.

Please enjoy:

The adrenaline was gone now,

Please enjoy:

and the surging pain in her chest and arm began to recede,

Please enjoy:

numbing to a dull ache,

Please enjoy:

though she knew the wound must be serious.

Please enjoy:

She shivered, for the cold had gotten into her,

Please enjoy:

and draped her tail over her legs to conserve her warmth.

Please enjoy:

In doing so, she noticed the place where the fox had snatched a handful of fur from her tail

Please enjoy:

-tip and left her with a raw and throbbing bald spot.

Please enjoy:

Even with all that had happened,

Please enjoy:

with one useless arm

Please enjoy:

and death along for the ride,

Please enjoy:

that bald spot depressed her more than the rest of it put together,

Please enjoy:

and the thought that the fur might never grow back,

Please enjoy:

that the tail her Miki had praised and loved so well might be forever marred,

Please enjoy:

was more than she could bear.

Please enjoy:

A convulsion of regret and self-pity overtook her then;

Please enjoy:

she wept like a child,

Please enjoy:

her tears and snot freezing to her face as she wailed.

Please enjoy:

Why had she insisted on making this trip?

Please enjoy:

She cursed her stupidity as she dabbed her nose with her poncho.

Please enjoy:

When the tears finally stopped,

Please enjoy:

she would have liked nothing more than to shut her eyes

Please enjoy:

and snatch a few seconds of sleep.

Please enjoy:

She could wait until she was in a clear patch of river

Please enjoy:

and catch a few seconds, she reasoned.

Please enjoy:

It would do her some good.

Please enjoy:

That was when a voice spoke to her,

Please enjoy:

a primal mind from the deepest recesses of her being,

Please enjoy:

so clear and sharp that it seemed

Please enjoy:

not even to be in her head.

Please enjoy:

It was as though she had been joined by an invisible companion.

Please enjoy:

“Lusa, you cannot sleep,”

Please enjoy:

it said. “If you sleep,

Please enjoy:

then you will die.” ***

Please enjoy:

How many hours had passed,

Please enjoy:

she could not have said.

Please enjoy:

More than two, she thought,

Please enjoy:

but whether it was four or eight, she didn’t know.

Please enjoy:

The storm had relented,

Please enjoy:

but the clouds still remained,

Please enjoy:

thick and menacing,

Please enjoy:

and they hid the moon and its light from her straining eyes.

Please enjoy:

She lamented the squirrels’ lack of night vision,

Please enjoy:

which so many other animals shared,

Please enjoy:

though the darkness was so complete that she doubted if even the old cougar chasing her could see.

Please enjoy:

She had tried, once,

Please enjoy:

to use her miner’s lamp,

Please enjoy:

and that had earned her a gunshot that clipped one of her whiskers off.

Please enjoy:

She hadn’t tried again. Both

Please enjoy:

she and they were using their batteries

Please enjoy:

sparingly to conserve their strength;

Please enjoy:

the best method of avoiding collisions with the ice,

Please enjoy:

both she and her hunters had found,

Please enjoy:

was to keep their boats straight

Please enjoy:

and move with the flow as much as possible.

Please enjoy:

It was chiefly on tight bends that they had to employ their motors,

Please enjoy:

bends she had, through necessity,

Please enjoy:

become expert at feeling out with her ears.

Please enjoy:

But even when they used their motors,

Please enjoy:

they were electric, whisper-quiet,

Please enjoy:

and softened even more by the sound of rushing water,

Please enjoy:

so she was never sure of where she was in relation to her pursuers.

Please enjoy:

Twice she had caught the scent of blood

Please enjoy:

not her own and known that they were close.

Please enjoy:

Still, they hadn’t killed her yet.

Please enjoy:

Perhaps they were too low on ammunition to gamble on iffy shots.

Please enjoy:

If that were so, then odds were good

Please enjoy:

she might never hear the one which found its mark. She

Please enjoy:

had weapon problems of her own.

Please enjoy:

It takes a lot of pressurized air to get a twenty-one gram projectile to move at two hundred meters a second;

Please enjoy:

her device could do this five times before the reservoir needed to be topped off again.

Please enjoy:

So, while she had plenty of ammo,

Please enjoy:

she had very little air with which to use it.

Please enjoy:

When next the moon came out,

Please enjoy:

she turned the air-gun on its side to inspect the pressure gauge,

Please enjoy:

and cursed. There was enough air for two more full-power shots.

Please enjoy:

She could continue to fire beyond that point,

Please enjoy:

but the ball-bearings’ velocity

Please enjoy:

would drop off so steeply

Please enjoy:

that she would do just as well to throw the damned things.

Please enjoy:

She had a hand pump in her pack,

Please enjoy:

but it took the whole of her body weight to force the plunger down when she used it.

Please enjoy:

That was not something she could not do with one arm,

Please enjoy:

even if she had a stable platform on which to do so,

Please enjoy:

which she did not.

Please enjoy:

On top of that, her air-gun was too heavy to wield with one arm.

Please enjoy:

Sighing, she took her hand and stuck it down her collar to check the compress she’d put on her wound.

Please enjoy:

Her fingers came back soaked.

Please enjoy:

The blood loss had slowed,

Please enjoy:

but she had been unable to get it to stop;

Please enjoy:

her parka was now so sticky with it that

Please enjoy:

she felt sure the bandits would have been able to track her by scent alone.

Please enjoy:

She shivered, sopped to the skin by a dampness that could not dry because

Please enjoy:

it came from within,

Please enjoy:

colluding with winter to sap her remaining body heat.

Please enjoy:

It was like she faced a new obstacle at every turn,

Please enjoy:

the odds of her survival narrowing by the hour.

Please enjoy:

Miki’s face surfaced in her thoughts

Please enjoy:

as though from the depths of the sea, and a pang of regretful yearning came with it,

Please enjoy:

doubling her over like a kick to the gut.

Please enjoy:

Would she ever see him again?

Please enjoy:

And who would take care of him if she were gone?

Please enjoy:

Why had she ever thought that this stupid trip was a good idea?

Please enjoy:

A slim line appeared in the east

Please enjoy:

like a golden wire across the horizon.

Please enjoy:

She had doubted lasting until sunrise,

Please enjoy:

but now those doubts were put to rest.

Please enjoy:

A few more minutes

Please enjoy:

and she could see the clouds had thinned and lightened,

Please enjoy:

the storm’s passing so gradual

Please enjoy:

that she had failed to notice it.

Please enjoy:

It was warming up now, too.

Please enjoy:

A mass of air from the southern sea

Please enjoy:

must have moved in on the storm’s wake.

Please enjoy:

The front mingled with the icy river-water and,

Please enjoy:

as the sun continued to climb,

Please enjoy:

it formed a mist

Please enjoy:

as thick and yellow as honey.

Please enjoy:

She watched, transfixed by the glory of it all,

Please enjoy:

her pursuers forgotten

Please enjoy:

in the grips of this miracle she saw now

Please enjoy:

as though for the first and final time.

Please enjoy:

But something even more amazing was happening:

Please enjoy:

spring was coming up with the sun.

Please enjoy:

At first, she couldn’t believe it.

Please enjoy:

How could it be spring in the middle of winter?

Please enjoy:

But grass and green reeds pushed up through the snow,

Please enjoy:

and the needles of the trees along the banks

Please enjoy:

shed their crystalline burdens as readily as a man might have thrown off an unneeded coat.

Please enjoy:

All the while it grew warmer,

Please enjoy:

until at last it was as warm as summer, and she laughed

Please enjoy:

to find she was floating both upstream and uphill, against the current.

Please enjoy:

The river rose before her,

Please enjoy:

far into the sky,

Please enjoy:

and the mist was only a cloud through which she was floating on her way into the blue.

Please enjoy:

The waters teemed with fish come to spawn,

Please enjoy:

as they did each year,

Please enjoy:

but more here than her village could eat in a million lifetimes,

Please enjoy:

their scales shining like silver glitter

Please enjoy:

as they leapt over the pools and waterfalls.

Please enjoy:

And there on the bank ahead

Please enjoy:

was someone waving to her in welcome,

Please enjoy:

someone she was sure she could recognize

Please enjoy:

if only she could get a little closer...

Please enjoy:

She snapped out of it,

Please enjoy:

gasping, with the word

Please enjoy:

“Papa” on her lips.

Please enjoy:

The sun was up, but the spring had not come with it.

Please enjoy:

It was still cold,

Please enjoy:

and she was still bleeding and exhausted.

Please enjoy:

“You cannot sleep, Lusa,”

Please enjoy:

her invisible friend reminded her.

Please enjoy:

“I know,” she said aloud,

Please enjoy:

wiping her bloodshot eyes.

Please enjoy:

“If I sleep, then I will die.”

Please enjoy:

Yawning, she took in her surroundings.

Please enjoy:

The ground was still hilly and full of rocks,

Please enjoy:

but less so than before.

Please enjoy:

She couldn’t have been far from the coast.

Please enjoy:

She must not give into her despair, she told herself,

Please enjoy:

not when she was this close.

Please enjoy:

Even if it was the last thing she did,

Please enjoy:

she had at least to get to Miki,

Please enjoy:

to give him the lenses she’d scavenged

Please enjoy:

and kiss him goodbye.

Please enjoy:

Let the whole universe turn against her,

Please enjoy:

she would sweep the barriers aside like a whirlwind.

Please enjoy:

Let a pitiful fate be written for her in the hardest stone,

Please enjoy:

she would shatter the words and write them anew with her blood.

Please enjoy:

She would not take that journey into the sky until she did

Please enjoy:

what she had set out to do,

Please enjoy:

and damn the odds.

Please enjoy:

“Hey, bitch!” If she had turned,

Please enjoy:

she would have seen the wolverine and cougar pointing pistols from only a few meters away,

Please enjoy:

having crept close while she was entranced.

Please enjoy:

She didn’t look, but ducked and hit the throttle just before two rounds passed through the space where her head had been.

Please enjoy:

They fired twice more each,

Please enjoy:

but a moving object is difficult to hit even on stable ground,

Please enjoy:

let alone while both shooter and target bobbed on the water while also being conveyed along at speed:

Please enjoy:

one bullet punched a hole in her canoe

Please enjoy:

a hand’s breadth above the waterline,

Please enjoy:

the others went far wide to hit nowhere near her.

Please enjoy:

“That’s it, I’m out,”

Please enjoy:

she heard the wolverine say.

Please enjoy:

She knew his voice from before.

Please enjoy:

“Start the motor, idiot!”

Please enjoy:

That must have been the cougar speaking,

Please enjoy:

his tone rough and weary.

Please enjoy:

“Dude, just let it go!”

Please enjoy:

There was a slap,

Please enjoy:

a hard one that echoed down the riverbanks.

Please enjoy:

“After what she did to the boss?

Please enjoy:

Do it, she’s getting away!”

Please enjoy:

Their shouting match had bought her some time.

Please enjoy:

Once she had put some distance between her and them,

Please enjoy:

she dared to lift her head and check the battery on her motor.

Please enjoy:

It was at two percent capacity,

Please enjoy:

the display flashed “WARNING: LOW CHARGE”

Please enjoy:

in bright red letters.

Please enjoy:

Up ahead, the river bent to the right

Please enjoy:

around a knoll grown over

Please enjoy:

with what her people called nootka trees,

Please enjoy:

also known as yellow cedar,

Please enjoy:

great, shaggy things with such a density of branches

Please enjoy:

that the trunks were scarcely visible.

Please enjoy:

They were everywhere along the coast,

Please enjoy:

and a sign she was almost home.

Please enjoy:

As she took the turn,

Please enjoy:

a branch smacked her flush on the nose,

Please enjoy:

and in the shock of it,

Please enjoy:

she formed something very much like a plan.

Please enjoy:

When the bandits took the same turn a few seconds later,

Please enjoy:

and the cougar, gun in hand,

Please enjoy:

got a face-full of the same protruding branch,

Please enjoy:

they found they had caught up with their quarry at last.

Please enjoy:

The squirrel, laying on her back,

Please enjoy:

had caught hold of one of the many such dangling limbs

Please enjoy:

with her dexterous paw

Please enjoy:

and was using it to anchor her canoe in place.

Please enjoy:

With the other foot she had grasped the end of her air

Please enjoy:

-gun as her ruined left arm could not,

Please enjoy:

and her remaining functional hand was on the trigger.

Please enjoy:

He looked down to find a laser dot

Please enjoy:

right in the middle of his breastbone.

Please enjoy:

A crack like a bull

Please enjoy:

-whip and her shot punched into him and splattered the upper third of his heart.

Please enjoy:

The gun fell from his hand

Please enjoy:

before he could bring it to bear on her,

Please enjoy:

and clacked onto the floor of their boat.

Please enjoy:

He clutched his chest,

Please enjoy:

eyes wide, and made an effort to pick up his weapon,

Please enjoy:

but faltered and tipped into the water with a splash,

Please enjoy:

where the current pulled him under.

Please enjoy:

Lusa released the branch

Please enjoy:

an instant before their boats collided;

Please enjoy:

the canoe shot away downstream like an arrow,

Please enjoy:

with the other craft in close pursuance.

Please enjoy:

She wriggled upright

Please enjoy:

and checked the pressure gauge on her air

Please enjoy:

-gun as if there would have been an increase, but no,

Please enjoy:

there was only enough for one more full-power shot.

Please enjoy:

She braced her armament on the edge of the canoe

Please enjoy:

and readied to make of her chances whatever she could.

Please enjoy:

The wolverine had left steering to grab the dropped pistol,

Please enjoy:

and when he came back up,

Please enjoy:

he did so shooting.

Please enjoy:

If he had wanted to abandon the chase only a minute before,

Please enjoy:

he was wild with hatred now,

Please enjoy:

not even aiming, but at such close range that he could hardly miss.

Please enjoy:

A bullet took off part of Lusa’s left ear,

Please enjoy:

another grazed her cheek

Please enjoy:

and ripped free a flap of skin the length of a finger.

Please enjoy:

His third bullet slammed into her collar

Please enjoy:

-bone just as she pulled the trigger, jostling her to the point

Please enjoy:

that it spoiled her shot and sent it low,

Please enjoy:

where it punched into the other boat

Please enjoy:

just below the waterline.

Please enjoy:

He stopped shooting,

Please enjoy:

regarding this new leak

Please enjoy:

with brows knit in thought.

Please enjoy:

Then a smile spread across his mouth

Please enjoy:

and he went back to steering,

Please enjoy:

aiming right for Lusa and her canoe.

Please enjoy:

If his boat was no good anymore,

Please enjoy:

then he would be content to take hers.

Please enjoy:

She strained to bring her air-gun to bear,

Please enjoy:

thinking a weak shot was better than nothing,

Please enjoy:

but she cried out in the effort and let it fall.

Please enjoy:

“What’s the matter, tree-rat,”

Please enjoy:

the wolverine taunted.

Please enjoy:

He was almost upon her now.

Please enjoy:

“Can’t lift your little pop-gun?”

Please enjoy:

He got his boat alongside hers and crawled,

Please enjoy:

shakily, halfway onto the canoe,

Please enjoy:

dragging his torso right on top of her,

Please enjoy:

his legs still in the sinking craft.

Please enjoy:

His ragged breath

Please enjoy:

blew the stink of rotten bone and blood straight into her nostrils.

Please enjoy:

Crazed, bloodshot eyes stared into hers.

Please enjoy:

He put the pistol against her forehead

Please enjoy:

and pulled the trigger.

Please enjoy:

Click. He was out of ammo.

Please enjoy:

Click, click. “Shit!”

Please enjoy:

He dropped the gun,

Please enjoy:

then, with a manic, triumphant smirk,

Please enjoy:

wrapped his hands around her throat,

Please enjoy:

squeezing and pushing down with his entire weight,

Please enjoy:

his whole overwhelming strength.

Please enjoy:

But then the smile inverted,

Please enjoy:

his demeanor of cruel victory became a mask of shock.

Please enjoy:

He released her and fumbled backwards onto his knees,

Please enjoy:

hands clutching at the knife Lusa had plunged into the side of his neck.

Please enjoy:

He stared at her,

Please enjoy:

mouth moving wordlessly.

Please enjoy:

She spat in his face,

Please enjoy:

the one attack left to her,

Please enjoy:

and shoved their boats apart with her leg.

Please enjoy:

Slowed by the increased drag of its descending profile,

Please enjoy:

he fell ever-further behind as she panted,

Please enjoy:

watching him sink.

Please enjoy:

Only when it had disappeared into the fog did she permit herself the indulgence of laying down.

Please enjoy:

There was something warm all around her.

Please enjoy:

Ah, yes, she thought.

Please enjoy:

That would be the rest of my blood.

Please enjoy:

On the furthest edge of her hearing,

Please enjoy:

there was the crashing of waves.

Please enjoy:

She was home. In a moment she would pass by the little beach beside the mouth of the river where she and Miki had made love for the first time.

Please enjoy:

Her eyes filled with tears

Please enjoy:

remembering that and she tried to sit up, but her body would not obey her.

Please enjoy:

For all her bravado,

Please enjoy:

it seemed her luck had run out at last.

Please enjoy:

A pity, to have come all this way,

Please enjoy:

to within a stone’s throw of her village,

Please enjoy:

only to drift out to sea and die alone.

Please enjoy:

But maybe she wasn’t entirely alone.

Please enjoy:

“Did I do well?” “You did well,”

Please enjoy:

the invisible voice said.

Please enjoy:

“It’s alright to sleep now.”

Please enjoy:

Where before she had been moving towards the ocean waves,

Please enjoy:

now she was moving away,

Please enjoy:

far above them, upstream,

Please enjoy:

uphill, into the sky

Please enjoy:

with the char and the salmon,

Please enjoy:

through golden mist,

Please enjoy:

into the warmth of a summer that she knew would never end.

Please enjoy:

A void like white mist

Please enjoy:

ate away at the fringes of her perception,

Please enjoy:

and she could not resist it.

Please enjoy:

More and more, the whiteness gnawed towards the center of her,

Please enjoy:

through the sky, the clouds,

Please enjoy:

and the river, through the sound of her breathing

Please enjoy:

and the rhythm of her heartbeat,

Please enjoy:

until there was nothing left

Please enjoy:

and she was gone. ***

Please enjoy:

When Lusa opened her eyes,

Please enjoy:

the first thing she saw was a wooden ceiling beam

Please enjoy:

onto which she and Miki had carved their initials.

Please enjoy:

There was the scent of burning seal

Please enjoy:

-oil and the soft ticking of a mechanical clock. “Oh, thank

Please enjoy:

God!” “Miki?” The name came out thick and with difficulty.

Please enjoy:

Her throat felt like it was full of cement.

Please enjoy:

Her husband’s face came into view,

Please enjoy:

blurry, but the scars were too singular for it to be anyone else.

Please enjoy:

He was crying, and his eyes were so puffy and bloodshot

Please enjoy:

that she was positive he hadn’t slept in days. “How?” She croaked.

Please enjoy:

“My cousin took his little one out to fish.

Please enjoy:

Almost crashed into your canoe about four klicks out.”

Please enjoy:

She frowned as the memories came into clearer focus.

Please enjoy:

“I got shot.” “Yeah. The doctor said your clavicle deflected a bullet upwards.

Please enjoy:

Half a millimeter lower and it would have torn an artery. You were lucky.”

Please enjoy:

She had to laugh at that.

Please enjoy:

It hurt. He took her hand in his;

Please enjoy:

she clasped it weakly.

Please enjoy:

They shared a smile

Please enjoy:

until she went to move her other arm

Please enjoy:

and found her shoulder so wrapped up in tape and bandages

Please enjoy:

that it might as well have been in a cast. “A bullet

Please enjoy:

snapped off a piece of your shoulder-blade,”

Please enjoy:

he explained. “The good news is you should get the use of your arm back.

Please enjoy:

You’re gonna have a nasty scar on your face, though.”

Please enjoy:

Then, teasing, he added:

Please enjoy:

“You’ll look just like me.”

Please enjoy:

She laughed again.

Please enjoy:

“I’ll never be as pretty as you.

Please enjoy:

Never was.” “You’ve been asleep four days now.

Please enjoy:

How do you feel?” “How the hell do you think I feel?”

Please enjoy:

she croaked. “Thirsty, I bet.

Please enjoy:

I’ll get you some water.”

Please enjoy:

He wheeled out into the kitchen

Please enjoy:

where she heard him rattling around for a glass.

Please enjoy:

Housekeeping wasn’t his strong suit,

Please enjoy:

she could only imagine the mountain of dirty dishes that had accumulated.

Please enjoy:

“Miki!” “Yes?” “Did you find the lenses?”

Please enjoy:

“We found them, don’t worry.

Please enjoy:

When you’re better, we’ll meet with the others and work out a deal.”

Please enjoy:

He was back now. She tried to sit up

Please enjoy:

and was surprised at the extent of her weakness,

Please enjoy:

but supposed that was to be expected after what she had been through.

Please enjoy:

He helped her up

Please enjoy:

and cradled her head while she drank.

Please enjoy:

“The doctor’ll be by later to check on you.

Please enjoy:

Do you want to sleep some more?”

Please enjoy:

She nodded. “You look like you could use some yourself.”

Please enjoy:

“Don’t worry about me,”

Please enjoy:

he said. “I’m tough.”

Please enjoy:

“You always were,” she admitted.

Please enjoy:

This was going to require some coaxing.

Please enjoy:

“Come in anyway,” she suggested.

Please enjoy:

“You can keep me warm.”

Please enjoy:

Miki yawned, too tired to belabor the point,

Please enjoy:

then wheeled around to the other side of the bed

Please enjoy:

and hauled himself onto the mattress with the trapeze she’d made for him.

Please enjoy:

He lay his trembling arm on her chest,

Please enjoy:

gently, as though she were a soap bubble that might burst at the slightest touch,

Please enjoy:

and the smell of him was a pleasure greater than summer.

Please enjoy:

There were those in the village

Please enjoy:

who felt sorry for her being married to a man in his condition,

Please enjoy:

but she considered herself fortunate.

Please enjoy:

Some people, she reflected as she sank back

Please enjoy:

into a blissful sleep,

Please enjoy:

just have all the luck. *** END
