Why Does God Permit Loneliness? – Meditation Monday
Thank you for joining us today for our five days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 999 of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy.
For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and praying. It is a time, to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.
If we admit it, all of us suffer bouts of loneliness either for a short period or long seasons of life. For our Meditation Monday today, I want us to reflect on…
Why Does God Permit Loneliness?
Most of us will try anything to get rid of our loneliness. We fill our lives with busy activities, entertainment, and addictions of all kinds in an attempt to mask our lonely lives. But should we? Should we be so quick to mask this loneliness or try and drop it? Could it be that loneliness is a gift? A gift from God?
We can become lonely when a friend turns away or betrays us. When a job, which we loved, suddenly ceases to be. When we just can’t seem to get our spouses to understand our perspective. When church becomes dull and routine, and we don’t really feel like going anymore.
Instead of feeling like a victim and suffering through it, give thought to the fact that possibly it is God who is removing your dependence on things and others until all you have left is God. Would God actually allow that? We may feel that God is disciplining us for something, but we cannot figure out what. Hebrews 12:6 tells us, “For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”
The real issue is that we have a skewed understanding of what discipline is. Most of us think of discipline as punishment, but it is not. It is the process by which we become true disciples of God. It is a refining process for us. Maybe God is silencing all other noise in our lives so that we can listen to Him. If He must silence every voice, he will. He wants you to discover what David discovered in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
Loneliness. Could it be one of God’s finest gifts? We should not fear loneliness, but realize that God may permit it to show His love to us. 1 John 4:18 says, “Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.”
If a season of solitude and loneliness is God’s way to teach you to hear His love song to you, don’t you think it’s worth it? So do I.
That is a wrap for today’s meditation. Next week we will continue our trek on Meditation Monday as we take time to reflect on what is most important in creating our living legacy.
