Be inspired and mentally prepared in 2020: Jo Moseley and Helen Davis

Jo discovered a love for SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) after turning 50 and in 2019, at the age of 54, she became the first woman to paddleboard from the West to the East coast of England. Not only that, but she also picked up litter along the way to highlight the amount of rubbish going into the sea from our inland waterways.

Goal setting -talking about outcome goals, performance goals, process goals. The importance of telling other people about your goals, writing them down.
Where can someone begin when it comes to sports psychology? Listen and notice to the small voices in your head is the first step, learn what you are like as an athlete.
Dealing with pre-race nerves - what are you telling yourself that is leading to you feel like that?
The importance of thinking, feelings and emotions, but how everyone is individual.
Confidence is an essential ingredient to performance and you can work on it on a daily basis. If you have a training session that didn’t go well, how to look for the positives and thinking about it in different ways.
Helping someone back from falls, crashes and injuries. Thinking about being “the best injured athlete you can be” and looking at what you ARE doing, rather than what you are not doing and being kind to yourself.
How psychological preparation can help you to get your brain back in the game when things start to unfold in a race. Look at what the scenarios might be in advance and have an action plan you can take so you are prepared if that happens. When you learn how to think effectively, you are able to turn things around.
Different techniques you can try to re-focus during a race. But you have to find what works for you – you could start to focus on technique that you have been working on in training, perhaps distract yourself completely by taking yourself away to your ideal holiday destination, imagine other people are watching you and how do you think they would want to see you?
