The Value of Putting Your Work Out There

Sharing one's work may feel intimidating, but it holds immense value for both the creator and the audience. Not only can it help develop one's skill set and establish a presence in a chosen field, but it also enables connections with others who share similar interests or could benefit from the work.

By putting their work out into the world, creators open themselves up to a multitude of opportunities that could come from the most unexpected places. Trista highlights the significance of sharing work, emphasizing that even when it's challenging, one's creations may help or inspire someone else.

By reframing the mindset, creators can think of their work as a contribution that has the potential to change lives positively. Trista advocates embracing this perspective to motivate oneself and push through any fears or hesitations.

Embracing Vulnerability and Authenticity

Showing vulnerability through one's work is a powerful way to connect with an audience genuinely. Authenticity resonates with people and can foster more meaningful relationships. While it might feel scary to let people see the real person behind the work, embracing vulnerability can help creators grow and strengthen their overall message.

Trista speaks to the importance of vulnerability in her podcast, suggesting that creators need to lean into it and trust in their ability to navigate any uncertainty.

Speaker:

Welcome to this Daring Adventure podcast where we work on bridging the gap between

Speaker:

where we are and where we want to be in order to live a bigger and bolder life.

Speaker:

In this podcast, we will provide inspiration, tips, and skills

Speaker:

you need to make your life the adventure you want it to be.

Speaker:

Here's your host, mindset, mentor, and life coach, Trista Guertin.

Trista Guertin:

Hey everybody.

Trista Guertin:

Welcome to another episode of This Daring Adventure.

Trista Guertin:

My name is Trista Guertin and I am your host.

Trista Guertin:

Today, I wanted to talk about putting your work out there.

Trista Guertin:

This is one of the things I see some of my clients struggling

Trista Guertin:

with, and I know personally I have struggled with this myself.

Trista Guertin:

Interestingly enough.

Trista Guertin:

Before I started coaching, before I became a coach and started my own

Trista Guertin:

business, I probably got away with not thinking too much and just avoiding

Trista Guertin:

putting my work out there, right?

Trista Guertin:

Because I really didn't have to.

Trista Guertin:

And you know, it was easy to buy into the loop in my head saying, I

Trista Guertin:

don't really have anything to share.

Trista Guertin:

It's not good enough.

Trista Guertin:

Who wants to hear from me?

Trista Guertin:

Once I became a coach, obviously starting my own business and trying to

Trista Guertin:

provide value and to help people, you have to sort of put yourself out there.

Trista Guertin:

One of the main ways is using social media.

Trista Guertin:

Instagram, Facebook, I guess LinkedIn, TikTok, whatever it may be.

Trista Guertin:

I typically use Instagram and Facebook.

Trista Guertin:

I've sort of done a little bit of LinkedIn and Pinterest,

Trista Guertin:

but I've also written a blog.

Trista Guertin:

I continue to post sometimes there.

Trista Guertin:

And a year ago I started my podcast, so.

Trista Guertin:

On a weekly basis, I am creating material and I am putting it out there for

Trista Guertin:

public consumption, and it's not easy.

Trista Guertin:

So I know.

Trista Guertin:

I know that if you are struggling, if you have doubt, if you're second guessing

Trista Guertin:

yourself about putting stuff out there, it's understandable and it's very normal.

Trista Guertin:

But today I wanted to dive into why you need to put your work out there and.

Trista Guertin:

How to do it to begin, I think the most important reason to put your

Trista Guertin:

work out there, particularly if you're a coach, if you are adding value,

Trista Guertin:

but even no matter what it is, if it's art, if it's educational, if

Trista Guertin:

it's inspiring, it can help someone.

Trista Guertin:

It can inspire someone.

Trista Guertin:

It can just make somebody feel good.

Trista Guertin:

It can be fun.

Trista Guertin:

It can change somebody's life.

Trista Guertin:

You don't know, and you may never know.

Trista Guertin:

I think you need to just understand that you can put something out there

Trista Guertin:

and it will touch someone in some way.

Trista Guertin:

You may never know.

Trista Guertin:

But it really could have an impact on them and on their lives, and I truly

Trista Guertin:

believe that that is what happens.

Trista Guertin:

I've had some great feedback from the work that I do, but.

Trista Guertin:

Most of the time I put stuff out there and I just believe that it's going to

Trista Guertin:

make a difference, even if it's not today, maybe, maybe a few years down the road.

Trista Guertin:

Who knows?

Trista Guertin:

Somebody might stumble upon it and think, wow, this is really helpful.

Trista Guertin:

I don't know, but I just believe it, and so I think there is a lot

Trista Guertin:

of value in you putting your work out there because it will touch

Trista Guertin:

somebody and they're waiting for you.

Trista Guertin:

I, one time a coach told me that you know, somebody is waiting out

Trista Guertin:

there for your work to touch them, to inspire them, to teach them, to support

Trista Guertin:

them, and you have a responsibility if you can do that, to do that.

Trista Guertin:

Your people are out there waiting for you.

Trista Guertin:

And I will tell fellow coaches that all the time when they are struggling with

Trista Guertin:

whether they want to post on social media or do a podcast or whatever it is, there

Trista Guertin:

are people out there waiting for you.

Trista Guertin:

You can help someone.

Trista Guertin:

You have the tools, you have the skills, you have the talent, you have

Trista Guertin:

the education, you have the skill, whatever it may be, you can help someone.

Trista Guertin:

So you have a responsibility to put it out there to help them.

Trista Guertin:

Second.

Trista Guertin:

I think it is very rewarding personally to create something and to put it out there.

Trista Guertin:

Now, it's scary, it's not easy, but I have to say it's highly satisfying

Trista Guertin:

in a way that I guess you can kind of imagine, but to actually experience it

Trista Guertin:

for yourself is very, Helpful and very, very much a source of pride for me.

Trista Guertin:

I never imagined that at this point in my life I would start doing this

Trista Guertin:

type of work, and it's a lot of

Trista Guertin:

it is an opportunity to be creative, which is something that doesn't.

Trista Guertin:

Naturally come to me or I wouldn't have said that I was.

Trista Guertin:

And it is a body of work that challenges me, that helps me to grow

Trista Guertin:

that I never imagined I would do.

Trista Guertin:

And I put it out there and I can look back and I can see what I've created.

Trista Guertin:

And it's really amazing.

Trista Guertin:

It's really amazing.

Trista Guertin:

I feel a lot of pride in what I've done.

Trista Guertin:

And in a lot of ways, I feel much prouder of this work that I have done over the

Trista Guertin:

past couple of years in my coaching than I have about anything else in my life.

Trista Guertin:

So it pushes me, it challenges me, and it uplevels me in so many respects.

Trista Guertin:

And it's extremely, extremely satisfying.

Trista Guertin:

So if you are thinking that something is missing, something is missing in

Trista Guertin:

your life, this could be an answer.

Trista Guertin:

It could be that you need an outlet to create something and

Trista Guertin:

to put it out in the world.

Trista Guertin:

The next point is that creating like this and putting things out

Trista Guertin:

in the world is a great opportunity to see what you're capable of.

Trista Guertin:

It is, as I said, an opportunity for growth and for evolving.

Trista Guertin:

But it helps to see what you are really capable of.

Trista Guertin:

And I believe that that is why we're here, to see what we are capable of.

Trista Guertin:

Not just to sit and stagnate, tread water, watch Netflix.

Trista Guertin:

It's like, let's get out there.

Trista Guertin:

Let's do something.

Trista Guertin:

Let's create something and really start to.

Trista Guertin:

Evolve and to grow and to see what is possible for ourselves and for our lives,

Trista Guertin:

and creating something like this and putting it out in the world opens you up.

Trista Guertin:

It opens you up in ways that you never imagined.

Trista Guertin:

It creates new connections.

Trista Guertin:

It creates new opportunities.

Trista Guertin:

It creates further ideas.

Trista Guertin:

And it, it just builds on itself in a way that you can't imagine now.

Trista Guertin:

My life feels so much bigger than it did before, and I think it's really

Trista Guertin:

about creating something, putting it out in the world, and just to

Trista Guertin:

keep, keep repeating that process.

Trista Guertin:

So how can you do this?

Trista Guertin:

It's not necessarily something that is intuitive.

Trista Guertin:

It's not something necessarily that comes naturally.

Trista Guertin:

It's not something that necessarily we are born comfortable doing.

Trista Guertin:

Right.

Trista Guertin:

That's very clear.

Trista Guertin:

It does take a certain degree of courage and vulnerability to

Trista Guertin:

put your work and yourself out there for other people to see.

Trista Guertin:

And there's no secret, there's no sort of magic bullet that is gonna

Trista Guertin:

make it easy, easy for you to do this.

Trista Guertin:

But I think starting small and keeping it easy for yourself is

Trista Guertin:

one of the best ways to do it.

Trista Guertin:

I started off doing just really fun little posts.

Trista Guertin:

Occasionally on Instagram I would do quotes.

Trista Guertin:

I would do just short little written texts just to put something out

Trista Guertin:

there and to sort of get used to it.

Trista Guertin:

I still don't do a lot of reels.

Trista Guertin:

I don't do a lot of putting myself.

Trista Guertin:

In a video and, and putting and posting it.

Trista Guertin:

It's something that I think about every single week.

Trista Guertin:

It's like, oh, I should really do this and do one But if you can start

Trista Guertin:

small and pick one or two easy topics that you're really comfortable with.

Trista Guertin:

Put a quote, whatever it is that feels easy for you.

Trista Guertin:

I think that's a fantastic way to start and sort of dip your toe in the

Trista Guertin:

water and build up your comfort level.

Trista Guertin:

Next.

Trista Guertin:

It's important to identify your fear.

Trista Guertin:

Don't keep it vague.

Trista Guertin:

If you are afraid that somebody's gonna criticize you, if somebody is going to

Trista Guertin:

try and cancel you, if somebody's going to try and judge you, put things in the

Trista Guertin:

comments, whatever it is, identify what that is and be very specific first,

Trista Guertin:

and then you need to ask yourself.

Trista Guertin:

Okay, so what, what if somebody does put a negative comment

Trista Guertin:

in the Instagram comments?

Trista Guertin:

What will I think, what can I control?

Trista Guertin:

How will I feel?

Trista Guertin:

And what you want to understand is that you cannot control if somebody.

Trista Guertin:

Puts a negative comment in your, in your comments.

Trista Guertin:

I mean, I guess you could turn off the commenting option, but once

Trista Guertin:

it's happened, you have the power to decide what you wanna think about it

Trista Guertin:

and what you want to make it mean.

Trista Guertin:

And you don't have to take on anybody's comments or anybody else's thoughts.

Trista Guertin:

That's their thoughts, that's their interpretation.

Trista Guertin:

And you may have a reaction, you may feel disappointed, you may feel

Trista Guertin:

frustrated, you may feel humiliated.

Trista Guertin:

You may feel sad when you first see this comment, but understand that that is

Trista Guertin:

because of what you're thinking about that comment and what you're making it mean.

Trista Guertin:

So you want to understand what you're making it mean.

Trista Guertin:

You want to allow for that emotion and process it,

Trista Guertin:

understanding that it is a choice.

Trista Guertin:

It is because of what you're thinking, and you wanna just allow

Trista Guertin:

it to be there, process it through, and know you're going to survive.

Trista Guertin:

And if you can imagine this right now, that no matter what emotion

Trista Guertin:

comes up for you, it won't kill you.

Trista Guertin:

It won't hurt you physically.

Trista Guertin:

You can experience it and get to the other side and be okay.

Trista Guertin:

And the worst that will happen is you experience this emotion.

Trista Guertin:

So if you can think that through ahead of time to be clear, what

Trista Guertin:

specifically are you afraid of?

Trista Guertin:

What are you worried about?

Trista Guertin:

Go through it.

Trista Guertin:

What are you making it mean?

Trista Guertin:

What emotion do you think you will experience and how can you allow for

Trista Guertin:

that and process it to get through it and know that you will not be hurt?

Trista Guertin:

If you look at some of the work of Brene Brown about vulnerability and

Trista Guertin:

shame you, she talks a lot about the importance of authenticity

Trista Guertin:

and of being true to yourself.

Trista Guertin:

And that includes emotional availability means opening up emotionally so you can

Trista Guertin:

connect with others on an emotional level.

Trista Guertin:

You're opening up, putting your work out there is opening up, making yourself

Trista Guertin:

vulnerable, opening up emotionally.

Trista Guertin:

Connecting emotionally with others, but knowing that no matter what happens,

Trista Guertin:

no matter what you experience, you can get through it, you can experience it,

Trista Guertin:

allow it, process it, move through it, and then survive and it won't kill you.

Trista Guertin:

And this is all a part of the human experience.

Trista Guertin:

You have to understand that fear.

Trista Guertin:

Is normal.

Trista Guertin:

Our brain is meant for survival.

Trista Guertin:

It's not meant for success.

Trista Guertin:

It is meant to keep us alive.

Trista Guertin:

And so it works on the premise that it wants to keep us afraid

Trista Guertin:

because the fear will keep us safe.

Trista Guertin:

It will keep us from.

Trista Guertin:

Putting ourselves out there, and this worked great when we were living in

Trista Guertin:

a cave, but now it holds us back.

Trista Guertin:

It keeps us from putting ourselves out there and growing and expanding

Trista Guertin:

and leading a bigger life.

Trista Guertin:

You want to then remind yourself when you experience this fear that you are

Trista Guertin:

safe, that nothing has gone wrong.

Trista Guertin:

And that the discomfort and the fear is going to be there no matter what you do,

Trista Guertin:

no matter how many times maybe you go to the next level and challenge yourself.

Trista Guertin:

The fear and the discomfort will always be there, but that doesn't mean stop.

Trista Guertin:

You can allow for it and get through it as well.

Trista Guertin:

And that's the key to creating what you want, is allowing for

Trista Guertin:

the fear and the discomfort.

Trista Guertin:

You don't have to get rid of it.

Trista Guertin:

You don't have to change it.

Trista Guertin:

You can challenge.

Trista Guertin:

You can channel courage, right?

Trista Guertin:

Think thoughts that create that feeling of courage in you in order to take the

Trista Guertin:

next step, in order to take the step that you need to put yourself out there.

Trista Guertin:

Just remember always, always whatever emotion comes up to

Trista Guertin:

allow it and to process it.

Trista Guertin:

And sometimes when you are preparing to put your work out there, it might

Trista Guertin:

help to do a little visualization.

Trista Guertin:

To sit and to think and imagine creating something, whether it's it's in written,

Trista Guertin:

a written form or a video or a post.

Trista Guertin:

And imagine creating it, sitting there and then getting ready to post it or

Trista Guertin:

to send it out or to, to share it.

Trista Guertin:

And imagine how you want to feel in that moment.

Trista Guertin:

Is it calm?

Trista Guertin:

Is it focused?

Trista Guertin:

Is it determined?

Trista Guertin:

And.

Trista Guertin:

Activate that feeling in you.

Trista Guertin:

So imagine that you're sitting at your desk, you're working at

Trista Guertin:

your laptop, you're writing that blog post, and then you're getting

Trista Guertin:

ready to put it on your website.

Trista Guertin:

How are you feeling?

Trista Guertin:

Truly activate that feeling so that you feel that moment of

Trista Guertin:

pride or determination or calm.

Trista Guertin:

Visualising this will activate that in your brain as well, and your

Trista Guertin:

brain doesn't know the difference so that it will want to close the gap.

Trista Guertin:

It will want to make that a reality when next time you are sitting at

Trista Guertin:

your laptop, writing your blog post, getting ready to put it on your website.

Trista Guertin:

So taking that time to visualize that.

Trista Guertin:

Oftentimes I will do some visualization in the morning and in the evening before bed.

Trista Guertin:

For what I wanna do, what I wanna create

Trista Guertin:

next.

Trista Guertin:

I've talked about this before.

Trista Guertin:

It is adopting a growth mindset.

Trista Guertin:

Going back to the work of Dr.

Trista Guertin:

Carol Dweck and her book Mindset, the New Psychology of Success.

Trista Guertin:

We want to adopt a growth mindset in order to, in order to overcome obstacles

Trista Guertin:

and to see them as opportunities.

Trista Guertin:

We don't want to keep a fixed mindset because this is what keeps us in

Trista Guertin:

trying to strive for perfectionism.

Trista Guertin:

With a growth mindset, we see the opportunities.

Trista Guertin:

We try to do our best.

Trista Guertin:

We know that next time we will keep growing or we will keep learning, we will

Trista Guertin:

keep improving, and that is the process.

Trista Guertin:

That is what we want to strive for.

Trista Guertin:

And so if we make a mistake, if we fail, if we have something to learn

Trista Guertin:

and to improve, this is not a threat.

Trista Guertin:

This is not something that is wrong with us.

Trista Guertin:

This is a part of the process, and regardless, we are moving ourselves

Trista Guertin:

forward, trying to keep things perfect, trying to make them perfect, trying to

Trista Guertin:

make everybody happy, trying to make everything the very best keeps you stuck.

Trista Guertin:

It will keep you from putting yourself out there.

Trista Guertin:

It will keep you from growing and learning and evolving, and so just

Trista Guertin:

know that we always have an opportunity to grow and to learn, and putting

Trista Guertin:

ourselves out there, putting our work out there is a part of that process.

Trista Guertin:

It never has to be perfect.

Trista Guertin:

I Think about it as a tool that you are using for your business or

Trista Guertin:

for your art, and an opportunity to connect with others next.

Trista Guertin:

Get some support.

Trista Guertin:

Sometimes surrounding yourself with others who are in the same business

Trista Guertin:

or in the same art or doing something similar to what you are doing can give

Trista Guertin:

you somebody to talk to, to use as a sounding board to to get that support

Trista Guertin:

and it can help to inspire you as well sometimes looking at what your colleague

Trista Guertin:

is doing, not to see whether it's better.

Trista Guertin:

No comparison here.

Trista Guertin:

That's not the purpose, but just to get some inspiration.

Trista Guertin:

And to see what is possible and to know that if they can

Trista Guertin:

do it, then you can do it too.

Trista Guertin:

Having that support, looking for opportunities to get that

Trista Guertin:

support can be really important.

Trista Guertin:

And sometimes that can come from a coach, sometimes that can come from a mentor,

Trista Guertin:

sometimes that can come from a colleague.

Trista Guertin:

That also can be helpful to generate and brainstorm ideas to get some feedback.

Trista Guertin:

And an opportunity to talk through some of your fears and what's holding you back.

Trista Guertin:

Finally, if you do face some failure or some disappointment,

Trista Guertin:

maybe you put something out there and nobody's looking at it.

Trista Guertin:

Maybe there is a negative comment.

Trista Guertin:

Whatever it is, face the failure, but don't make it personal Does

Trista Guertin:

not mean anything about your worthiness or your value as a person.

Trista Guertin:

Your worthiness, your value as a person is a hundred percent.

Trista Guertin:

It does not come from your work.

Trista Guertin:

It does not come from your relationships.

Trista Guertin:

It does not come from your art.

Trista Guertin:

It comes from a decision that you make about yourself and that you know.

Trista Guertin:

And you embody and you live it.

Trista Guertin:

But if you put something out there that nobody is seeing or nobody

Trista Guertin:

is reading, or nobody is saying anything about, that's okay.

Trista Guertin:

You don't have to even see it as a failure.

Trista Guertin:

You don't have to make it mean anything about you personally

Trista Guertin:

because it's not personal.

Trista Guertin:

Understand that.

Trista Guertin:

It's not an easy task to put your work out there and to make yourself

Trista Guertin:

vulnerable and to show people what you're doing, but set yourself some goals.

Trista Guertin:

Push your creativity, have fun with it, and keep showing up.

Trista Guertin:

Keep practicing, keep working on it.

Trista Guertin:

It will get easier,

Trista Guertin:

It's normal to feel nervous and, and insecure and vulnerable and uncomfortable.

Trista Guertin:

When you're putting your work out there, when you're even thinking

Trista Guertin:

about putting your work out there.

Trista Guertin:

It's normal.

Trista Guertin:

Everybody goes through it.

Trista Guertin:

You're not alone, I promise you.

Trista Guertin:

Everybody who is putting their work out there has experienced

Trista Guertin:

this at some point, be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress.

Trista Guertin:

Celebrate your wins.

Trista Guertin:

Look back at the things that you've accomplished over the past month,

Trista Guertin:

the past week, the past quarter, whatever it is, and celebrate those.

Trista Guertin:

Celebrate yourself.

Trista Guertin:

Be proud.

Trista Guertin:

Never compare yourself to others.

Trista Guertin:

This is, not a comparison.

Trista Guertin:

You are unique.

Trista Guertin:

Your work is unique.

Trista Guertin:

It's just as important as anybody else's, and it's needed out there.

Trista Guertin:

It can really touch somebody.

Trista Guertin:

It can really be valuable.

Trista Guertin:

It can inspire someone.

Trista Guertin:

It can change their life.

Trista Guertin:

You never know for sure, but just get some support, have fun, focus on the process.

Trista Guertin:

And see what you're capable of.

Trista Guertin:

It's not to be more worthy.

Trista Guertin:

You're already a hundred percent worthy, but let's see what you're capable of.

Trista Guertin:

Let's see what you can do with this life.

Trista Guertin:

That's what I have for you today.

Trista Guertin:

Put your work out there.

Trista Guertin:

Get on Instagram.

Trista Guertin:

Publish your blog post.

Trista Guertin:
