In this episode of "Make More Love," host Ellen Dorian challenges the traditional notion of work-life balance and the disadvantages of compartmentalization, advocating instead for work-life integration. She shares five key principles to help entrepreneurial men harmonize their business ambitions with personal relationships, ensuring a fulfilling life both at work and at home.
Part 1: Rethinking Work-Life Balance
Ellen critiques the outdated concept of work-life balance, highlighting its inefficiencies and the unrealistic separation of work and personal life. She introduces the idea of work-life integration as a more cohesive approach.
Part 2: Five Principles of Work-Life Integration
Ellen outlines five principles: designing your world to fit your needs, embracing authenticity, avoiding the work-life triangle, practicing intentional presence, and leveraging business skills in personal relationships. She shares personal anecdotes and practical examples to illustrate these concepts.
Part 3: Tips for Implementing Change

your relationship and your life, staying

:connected here is your first step.
15
:And, if you find today's conversation
helpful, please share it with
16
:a friend who could use some new
ideas for their own relationship.
17
:Today, we're going to talk
about Work-Life Balance.
18
:Work-life balance has been a buzz phrase
since the:
19
:world first figured out it could squeeze
more productivity out of employees
20
:if they allowed them to take care
of their health and their families.
21
:Personally, I think work-life balance
is BS, especially for business owners.
22
:First off, even the expression "work-life
balance" doesn't make sense to us
23
:because we don't see work and life as two
separate things, so how are we supposed to
24
:balance something that's only one thing?
25
:Second, it emphasizes
compartmentalization, which leads
26
:us to split work, relationships,
personal interest and health into
27
:silos, which if you ask me is
a guaranteed path to burn out.
28
:Third, it brings constant context
switching and its evil twin multitasking.
29
:It drains us and tears us apart.
30
:It's hardly efficient, and frankly,
it's a painful way to live.
31
:and fourth, the whole idea behind it was
to pressure corporations into treating
32
:people like human beings, not machines.
33
:It's not like it was a self-care mandate.
34
:So, work-life balance may be
BS, but the problem is real.
35
:Your work is your life,
but so is your marriage.
36
:A big part of why you're doing this is
to provide your wife with the Good Life
37
:you promised when you married her, right?
38
:Of course it's tough when your
work and your wife are competing
39
:for your time and attention.
40
:You've got to figure out a way to satisfy
both or you risk losing everything.
41
:So, when you're at your wit's end
and you finally seek advice to be
42
:told that you need better work-life
balance is eye rollingly frustrating.
43
:So, what is the alternative
if work-life balance isn't it?
44
:We'll talk about that next...
45
:But before we jump into that, I want to
let you know about something special I
46
:offer to my listeners: A lot of you've
been reaching out with questions about
47
:your own relationships and I want to help.
48
:So, I'm offering this free
Relationship Reset Call.
49
:It's a quick 15 or so minutes.
50
:Just you and me, where we get the lay
of the land and we sketch out a plan to
51
:get you moving in the right direction.
52
:If you're thinking about
scheduling a call, here are a
53
:few questions to ask yourself:
54
:Would you like to be sure that you're
focusing on the most urgent and
55
:important issues in your relationship?
56
:Would it be valuable for you to learn
how to apply skills you've already
57
:mastered in your work to increase
the passion in your relationship?
58
:And.
59
:Would having an experienced
guide help you stay on track as
60
:you implement new strategies?
61
:If you answered "Yes," then let's connect.
62
:Just head over to relationship reset
call dot com , grab your spot, and we'll
63
:jump on a call and figure everything out.
64
:Because honestly, ...and you know this
as well as I do ...if you let your
65
:relationship slide, the cost to you
financially, socially, emotionally, and
66
:in every other way is just enormous.
67
:It will truly put a dent in your armor.
68
:So let's not let that happen.
69
:Let's get you on a trajectory to Make
More Love in Your Life and With Your Wife.
70
:And we are back.
71
:Part Two.
72
:5 Key Principles
73
:Okay, so far, I've shared four
reasons why work-life balance
74
:doesn't cut it for business owners:
75
:A: We don't see them as separate.
76
:B: It feeds into unhealthy
compartmentalization.
77
:C: It requires a lot of context
switching, which wastes a lot of energy.
78
:and
79
:D: It's not a prescription for self care.
80
:Instead, we need our life to adapt to
our needs, ambitions and relationships.
81
:That's where Work-Life
Integration comes in.
82
:Integration is work-life
balance that actually works.
83
:It blends business life, personal
interests, family life, and self care
84
:into a cohesive system where everything is
connected and flows in the same direction.
85
:If we hope to achieve this though,
we're going to need a new playbook,
86
:and I'm going to share mine, which
is based on five key principles.
87
:So let's break those down:
88
:Principle #1 is to design
your world to suit you.
89
:My own coach has often says it's easier
to change your world to fit you than it
90
:is to change yourself to fit the world.
91
:This one really hit home for me.
92
:Here's just one example from my own life.
93
:See...
94
:I'm a night owl.
95
:I always have been.
96
:I remember as a five-year-old having a
full on tantrum at a friend's sleeover
97
:because her dad made us go to bed early.
98
:My own parents tried their best, but by
the time I was 11 or so, they'd given up.
99
:They would just remind me to turn
off the lights when I was done,
100
:and then they'd head to bed while I
stayed up watching Midnight Special
101
:and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert.
102
:Fast forward a few decades....
103
:when I first got into coaching...
104
:and I forced myself to fit
in with my clients who were
105
:construction business owners.
106
:That's the original 5:00 AM Club.
107
:But, once I took my coach's
advice and started shaping my
108
:world to fit my true nature...
109
:like saying no to 7:00 AM meetings...
110
:my life improved.
111
:It turned out that my clients preferred
later times for our meetings too.
112
:After all, they were up at
5:00 AM because they were busy.
113
:So embracing our own needs, like my
night owl habits, moves us in the
114
:direction of integration, shaping our
world to fit us and moving us toward
115
:better flow in our lives overall.
116
:Now I'll ask you what is one step
you could take to redesign your work
117
:life, to better suit your true nature?
118
:Think about that while we
move on to principle number 2.
119
:# 2: Embrace your Authenticity.
120
:Are you living a Clark Kent-to-Superman
lifestyle, thinking you need
121
:to lose the glasses and put on a
cape so you can save the world?
122
:Interesting thing about Clark Kent.
123
:You know he didn't need the cape, right?
124
:He had all the superpowers anyway.
125
:He was really just compartmentalizing,
which is the opposite of authenticity.
126
:Now, a lot of really good coaches I know
use cues to switch between life domains.
127
:For example, my own coach wears
a certain color to become the
128
:"onstage" version of himself.
129
:And another coach I know wears
a wristband as a visual reminder
130
:to put his work persona away when
he's interacting with his wife,
131
:because he's not the boss of her.
132
:While those structures can be very
effective, they can also work against
133
:you if being authentic is your goal.
134
:The real key to authentic living
is mastering your attention.
135
:This is what will allow you to become
wholly yourself in every context.
136
:In future episodes, we'll do a deep dive
on that and I'll make my case for how
137
:mastering your attention will transform
your life, but it's too much for this
138
:episode so we're going to move on.
139
:Once you've embraced your authentic
self, the next step is to free our
140
:relationship from competitive tensions.
141
:# 3: No Triangles
142
:One of the biggest problems with
being a married business owner is that
143
:it's almost impossible to avoid your
business competing directly against
144
:your relationship for your attention.
145
:In 2014, INC Magazine ran a gut
wrenching article called, "The Start
146
:of a Company, the End of a Marriage."
147
:That article became my blueprint for the
problem I wanted to solve, both through
148
:my coaching and through this podcast.
149
:There's a copy of the article in the
Passionate Partners Insider Community,
150
:which is our private Facebook group.
151
:So if you haven't read it, you should head
over there after the episode and get it.
152
:In the meantime, I'm going
to read you this one passage
153
:and you will get the picture.
154
:"Sometimes the Passionate relationship
you form with your company begins
155
:to feel almost like, well, cheating.
156
:Said the entrepreneur
featured in the story.
157
:The first love of my life was my company.
158
:And even though I married my wife
and I loved her, I don't think
159
:it ever came up to the passion
that I felt for my company."
160
:Put yourself in that wife's
shoes, when she saw that in print.
161
:I'll bet good money that you do not
want to make your wife feel that way.
162
:The "work-wife triangle" is a direct
result of you falling into the role
163
:of serving your business instead of
designing your business to serve your
164
:life and by extension your relationship.
165
:Living authentically and realigning
your work so it doesn't compete with
166
:your relationship will set you up
to execute on the next principle,
167
:which is about engaging fully
and not just being in the room.
168
:#4: Intentional Presence
169
:I am not talking about some kind of
strict Nine-to-Five dream life here.
170
:I know that's not going to happen.
171
:You know, that's not going to happen.
172
:What I'm talking about is
making sure your mind is focused
173
:where your feet are planted.
174
:This means structuring your business so
you don't have to sleep with your cell
175
:phone on the pillow next to you....
176
:that you can take a vacation
and actually unplug...
177
:that you can go on a date night
and be up for whatever happens.
178
:I have a friend who is career military.
179
:He's away from home for quite long
stretches and his work is all consuming.
180
:He and his wife made a pact.
181
:She told him, 'I don't need you to
be here 100% of the time, but I do
182
:need 100% of you when you are here."
183
:And that is how they keep their
marriage a Passionate Partnership.
184
:When we're intentionally present, our
partner gets to experience us fully
185
:without distraction or divided attention,
making each moment count even more.
186
:Now we've tailored our world aligned
our true selves, prioritized our
187
:relationships and deepened our presence.
188
:The final principle completes
the integration by leveraging
189
:what we already excel at.
190
:#5: Use the Business Skills
You've Already Mastered and
191
:Apply Those to Your Relationship.
192
:One of the things I discovered by
combining business coaching with
193
:relationship coaching is it the same five
strategies that drive business success
194
:can also foster a Passionate marriage.
195
:I had a conversation with a colleague
once who said he was having trouble
196
:talking with his wife about making
their relationship work better.
197
:He asked how he could
even open up the subject.
198
:And I asked him, "Well, How
would you start the conversation
199
:with your business partner?"
200
:And he said, "Well, I'd
just set up a time...
201
:maybe we get a coffee and then
say, ' things aren't working
202
:the way I want them to.' Let's
figure out how to do this better."
203
:Then I asked him, "So what would it be
like if you did that with your wife?"
204
:And he said, "Well, it sounds
simple when you put it that way."
205
:That's what I mean about using the
business skills you've already mastered
206
:and applying those to your relationship.
207
:I've actually put together a formula
for this purpose, which is too
208
:much to share now, but I'm going to
share with you in a future episode.
209
:So, those are the five key principles:
210
:Design your world
211
:Embrace your authenticity
212
:No Triangles
213
:Intentional Presence
214
:and
215
:Leverage What You Excel At.
216
:These principles don't exist in isolation.
217
:Together, they form a framework that
enhances every aspect of your life.
218
:Next, I'll give you three practical
tips for implementing these principles,
219
:so you can start seeing positive
change as quickly as possible.
220
:Part Three.
221
:Putting the Principles into Action
222
:The pursuit of work-life
integration isn't about achieving
223
:this stereotypical dream life.
224
:It's about leveraging synergies.
225
:As you get started, you allow these
synergies to emerge and then slowly
226
:build momentum so you won't feel like
you're pushing a rock up hill forever.
227
:Here are 3 Steps to get you rolling:
228
:# 1: Start Slow
229
:This is not a time when going faster
is going to get you there quicker.
230
:Pick one strategy and take the
time to let it become habit.
231
:Before you move on to the next one.
232
:2: Set Micro-Goals
233
:Be honest with yourself
about how much change you can
234
:realistically make at one time.
235
:And, don't set yourself up
for failure by trying to meet
236
:impossibly high expectations.
237
:" Progress, Not Perfection is
a cliché precisely because
238
:it's been true for so long.
239
:And
240
:#3 is to Get Support.
241
:Work-life integration
is not a DIY project.
242
:It requires an outside perspective.
243
:Isn't that why you're here listening?
244
:It's definitely why I'm here talking.
245
:So why not book a call and let's
look at your specific situation.
246
:It's free.
247
:It's short.
248
:It might just change your life.
249
:Look for the calendar link in the
show notes for the free Relationship
250
:Reset Call and just pick a time.
251
:That fence you've been sitting
on is leaving marks on your butt.
252
:Creating an integrated life is
like crafting a masterpiece.
253
:It's an art and a science.
254
:Every day is an opportunity to
blend the different parts of your
255
:life in new and exciting ways.
256
:Your business goals and
personal dreams are not at odds.
257
:They're multipliers.
258
:and that is how you
#makemorelove in your life.
259
:Here are a few key points from this
episode that I hope you'll take with you:
260
:1.
261
:Work-life balance is an outdated
concept that doesn't fit the
262
:reality of business owners.
263
:Instead work-life integration is a more
effective approach, blending all aspects
264
:of life into a cohesive experience.
265
:2.
266
:The five principles of work-life
integration are: Designing your world
267
:to suit your needs, Embracing your
authenticity, Avoiding the work wife
268
:triangle, Practicing intentional presence.
269
:And Leveraging business skills you excel
at to enhance your personal relationship.
270
:To get started, choose small manageable
changes, set realistic micro goals for
271
:steady progress and seek expert support
to navigate the transition effectively.
272
:It also helps to keep the
big picture in mind...
273
:a harmonious and fulfilling
life that rewards you for
274
:everything you do, day after day.
275
:Alright.
276
:I hope today's episode added
some real value to your life.
277
:If you are ready for more support
ideas or just someone to brainstorm
278
:with here are three ways to get that.
