He earned a BS and MS in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. with a focus on Construction Engineering and Occupational Safety and Health. Before his academic career, he worked in construction as a laborer, project engineer, and quality inspector. His research, teaching, and consulting focuses on the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities in the workplace.\n\nDr. Hallowell shares about his work and ongoing and future projects. He is the Executive Director of the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA). It is a group of people from industry and academia working together to do research. They are trying to not just be an organization that points at the problems but also to come up with solutions.\n\nOne part of his job at the university is research, the other part is teaching, and he has the opportunity to teach students about safety as an integrating component of design.\n\nDr. Hallowell is also the Executive Director of Safety Function, a firm that specializes in evidence-based safety services.
