{"href":"http://player.captivate.fm/services/oembed?url=http%3A%2F%2Fplayer.captivate.fm%2Fepisode%2F7bae7448-b1ab-450f-820c-eadf2d4b9b28","version":"1.0","provider_name":"Captivate.FM","provider_url":"https://www.captivate.fm","width":600,"height":200,"type":"rich","html":"","title":"10 Success Factors for Literacy Intervention \u2013 Featuring Susan Hall Ed.D | ASCD","description":"In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we welcome author and CEO of the 95 Percent Group, Susan Hall on the program to discuss the importance of Literacy Intervention in the primary grades. \u00a0Check out Susan\u2019s new book \u201c10 Success Factors for Literacy Intervention: Getting Results with MTSS in Elementary Schools\u201d available from ASCD.\r\nIn this episode, we discuss:\r\n\r\nHow to support young readers as they develop their literacy skills\r\nWhen parents suspect a reading issue what can they do?\r\n\r\nSusan advises parents to trust your instincts\r\nAsk questions at school such as \u201cWhich reading group is my child in?\u201d\r\nAsk about assessments, whether there are small groups for those who are struggling, what systems are in place to assist teachers with small group instruction, etc\r\n\r\n\r\nWhat is the state of literacy in today\u2019s elementary schools?\r\n\r\nThe US is about in the middle of the 37 developed countries\r\nThis just is not good enough \u2013 we should be in the top tier\r\n\r\n\r\nWhat should we be doing to help our students learn how to read?\r\n\r\nSchools need to make early literacy a priority. \r\nTeachers need the knowledge and resources to help teach ALL students to read.\r\n\r\n\r\n10 Success Factors for Literacy Intervention:\r\n\r\n#1 \u2013 Students who are getting extra help should be grouped by skill deficit\r\n#2 \u2013 It\u2019s important to take a few moments to diagnose why the student can\u2019t read\r\n\r\nParents have the ability to ask for assessments\r\n\r\nDoes my child\u2019s school assess all students with early literacy assessments 3 times a year (like well baby check-ups)?\r\nHow did my child score?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n#3 \u2013 Use a \u201cWalk to Intervention Model\u201d \u2013 When small-group interventions are offered, the best approach is for children to leave their homeroom and be placed in specific skill groups that are shared across the grade level with plenty of instructors. \u00a0The students furthest behind should be in small groups of no more than 5 students. This is more effective than having 1 or 2 groups in a classroom and the rest of the students working alone during this time.\r\n#4 \u2013 Use an appropriate assessment to monitor progress\r\n\r\n1-2 min assessment every few weeks to check to see if students are on progress\r\nChart the progress to see if the student is on an effective trajectory to reach benchmark.\r\nThese progress monitoring charts can be shared with parents\r\n\r\n\r\n#5 \u2013 Flood the intervention time with extra help\r\n#6 \u2013 Use intervention time wisely\r\n\r\nThere is an urgency to catch a student up as early as possible\r\n\r\n\r\n#7 \u2013 Be aware of what makes intervention time work\r\n\r\nTeachers need to understand what makes a lesson work (or not work)\r\n\r\n\r\n#8 \u2013 Provide teachers with good intervention lessons\r\n#9 \u2013 Invest in Professional Development\r\n#10 \u2013 INspect what you EXpect\r\n\r\nPrincipal walkthroughs during intervention times\r\nBeing an active part of the process\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAbout our Guest\r\nSusan L.
