Some mornings the mind is quiet. Some mornings it is a forest on fire.
This teaching is about what does not burn.
Most of our attention runs outward — reporting on what is coming, what is going, what just happened, what might happen next. The habit is so old it feels like us. And it costs us. We hemorrhage energy into what is momentary, then wonder why we are tired in a way that sleep does not reach.
But something here has never moved. Something watches the arrival and the departure of every thought, every sensation, every storm, and is not carried off by any of them. This morning we turn the attention around and look for it.
Not as a belief. Not as an idea to agree with. As something you can check for yourself: if I were only the thing that came and went, I would have gone with it. But I am still here, watching it appear and disappear. So what am I?
In the Vietnamese Zen tradition this is called touching the nature of no birth and no death. Not a doctrine — a recognition. And it is available in an ordinary kitchen on an ordinary morning.
You will meet resistance. The mind has endless energy for foolish things and none at all for this one. That resistance is also perceived. Notice it, and keep looking.
What is found is not a technique for managing your life. It is a steadiness that was already there, and a quiet confidence that comes with it. And it does not remove you from the world. Inner freedom is what makes compassion possible — when you are not imprisoned by every movement of your own mind, there is finally room to truly see another human being. Room to listen. Room to respond with loving kindness instead of reaction.
Sit with it. Walk with it. Lie down with it. Stand with it. Whatever posture supports the practice.
May we be peaceful. May we be compassionate. May we be free of suffering and the causes of suffering. May the peace we touch within ourselves become peace for all beings.
Namaste.

Keep confirming Sit with it, walk with it, lie down with it, stand with it
2
:in whatever posture supports the practice.
3
:Namaste
4
:Good morning.
5
:Sit with me.
6
:Take a breath
7
:and just arrive here
8
:This morning, let us keep
confirming even the small things,
9
:whatever's coming and going
10
:The habit is that the
attention runs out to it.
11
:It runs this way, it runs that way.
12
:It's all over the place, reporting
on what is going on But from the
13
:real place, nothing is going on.
14
:Confirming this over and over
corrects the habit of feeling
15
:that we are the ones
who go with every moment
16
:If we stay with it, if it resonates,
and we keep looking and confirming, then
17
:gradually we stop hemorrhaging energy
18
:to what is momentary
19
:to what is coming and going.
20
:And everything stays right here.
21
:Our energy is not broken.
22
:We are simply here
23
:So.
24
:, on the day the forest of your mind bursts
into flames, something remains untouched.
25
:And this, we may say, is our training.
26
:It's the practice
27
:And it is the training
that becomes more enjoyable
28
:It is enjoyable to feel our expansiveness.
29
:It is enjoyable to feel that something
is growing into truthfulness.
30
:It is enjoyable to come to the point
where it becomes a natural conviction
31
:within us that what we are is not
limited to what comes and goes
32
:In Vietnamese Zen, we might say
33
:that we begin touching nature of no
birth and no death, not as a belief,
34
:not as an idea, but as something
we begin to recognize directly
35
:If someone merely touches us with this,
perhaps we will not be able to grasp it.
36
:But if we pay attention to that which
is unmoving rather to the things
37
:which are always moving, we will
come to that natural conviction.
38
:we may even go beyond
conviction or the concept of
39
:belief itself.
40
:It is not simply saying,
I'm not what I see.
41
:I'm not what I see.
42
:Over and over again, there is no
need to turn it into a mantra.
43
:It is actually understanding and
confirming that I cannot be only that.
44
:It is coming and going
45
:If it were that , when it went , I would
also be gone . But I am here to watch
46
:its appearance and its disappearance.
47
:So who or what can I be?
48
:Not merely ideas
49
:Now experience it and prove it
50
:It is very easy to feel some
resistance here, some laziness
51
:It is part of the mind's condition.
52
:We have plenty of energy
for foolish things
53
:But for that one thing that
can reveal our true nature.
54
:The mind says, "I don't like this.
55
:"I don't have time for
this That too is perceived
56
:Does it matter?
57
:Does it have the power we give it?
58
:All things are perceived.
59
:That which sees everything,
that which perceives everything.
60
:All our lives we've been
perceiving and making some records
61
:Save.
62
:Save.
63
:Delete.
64
:Delete.
65
:Save.
66
:Replay.
67
:Replay
68
:We've been doing this our whole life
69
:No one else is really contributing to
our movie in the way that we imagine.
70
:That which is perceiving everything,
every sensation, even sensations so
71
:subtle that there's no name for them.
72
:Still, they are perceived in consciousness
73
:So that which is perceiving
everything, which sees everything
74
:Can that itself be perceived?
75
:That which sees everything.
76
:And by seeing, I don't mean only
visual seeing, perceiving as in
77
:feeling, sensing, knowing, being
78
:That which is behind it, can that
itself be perceived directly?
79
:And take a look
80
:Try.
81
:And if it can be perceived,
by what can it be perceived?
82
:By another?
83
:Does it have a story?
84
:Does it have a parent?
85
:Does it have a CN diploma?
86
:So what is it?
87
:If we say that which is
perceiving everything
88
:Where is it?
89
:Where is the location of that
which perceives inside and
90
:outside at the same time?
91
:Where is it located?
92
:And where are we in all of this?
93
:Are we the object of perception?
94
:Are we the subject of perception?
95
:It is mostly through habit that we
place ourselves in the position of an
96
:object of perception, and that's fine
97
:This is the capacity of our
knowing, but it is not fine if we've
98
:forgotten the subject of perception
99
:If we're only a leaf blown by
the wind, what knows this leaf
100
:is being blown by the wind?
101
:Another leaf
102
:Somehow within the blown leaf, there
must be something which is not blowable,
103
:not movable, not moving, not subject
to all the movements of the wind.
104
:And then what happens during a tsunami?
105
:A tsunami is a crisis moment.
106
:This crisis moment, this
intense experiencing.
107
:In those moments, we tend to panic,
and panic is also perceivable
108
:Maybe in that intensity on this
emotional rollercoaster, our
109
:ability to perceive feels diminished
110
:But is it necessarily diminished?
111
:And why is that?
112
:That we feel Not now.
113
:Not now.
114
:I'm all caught up with
the noise in my mind
115
:The strength of our identification
with the body-mind and the strength
116
:of our ability to witness what
is happening are directly related
117
:If we strongly identify with the
body-mind functioning and personal
118
:identity, we will feel unable to witness
it, unable to stay out of that noise.
119
:Many beings through their practice,
but largely through understanding,
120
:come to recognize their correct
position in this, and they honor it
121
:they begin to honor it
122
:And what does honoring it mean?
123
:They pay attention to it
124
:that which is.
125
:They become very keen to
observe this moment and to
126
:see, " Wow , I am watching this
127
:And maybe after a while of watching
it and not identifying with it,
128
:we lose interest in it also.
129
:And if we lose interest in a
thing , it is no longer registered
130
:in the consciousness in the same way.
131
:Experientially, its
grip begins to disappear
132
:Now we can say we are editing
133
:Maybe the things we don't like
we try to get rid of, and the
134
:things we do like we try to keep.
135
:But even if that were true, the
one who wishes to keep or get rid
136
:of anything is also perceivable
137
:So we can begin giving
some attention to this
138
:Because if indeed we do this, the fruit
of our looking will not disappoint us
139
:We can simply say, "Okay, from now on,
I wanna give some attention to this.
140
:This is really interesting
141
:I wanna know more.
142
:I wanna understand
143
:I would like to sit with it just
a little more and really try to
144
:understand what is happening here
145
:And some come into the practice and say
146
:I'm very easily distracted
147
:Somebody says something and we're--
right in the middle of that story
148
:Or we are really here and
then something goes Click
149
:and something is gone
150
:Click It's like a light switch.
151
:It's a little flicker.
152
:And we can watch that sense of going and
see that which observe the sense of going.
153
:Did that also go to the witness
of the thing being watched?
154
:And you can find out what
happened, and it's such a joy.
155
:It's such a silence and stillness and such
a steadiness is discovered within you.
156
:It's already there.
157
:And tremendous confidence, absolute
confidence comes too And we can keep
158
:doing this and transcend the noise
159
:We entertain with our attention the
noise that pulls us away from presence
160
:The noise that comes and
pulls us away from compassion
161
:The noise that causes us to forget
ourselves and forget one another
162
:And how to be compassion
163
:Center people
164
:Express matter
165
:Every moment in loving kindness
166
:Toward another person and being
167
:and connectedness with others
168
:We entertain so much of it
169
:and we can become very
complacent with many bad habits
170
:They can be overcome more
quickly than we sometime imagine.
171
:So many wonderful things await us
172
:Meaning that we are not accessing
a great part of our potential
173
:We don't know anything about it.
174
:But we're starting here.
175
:We're paying attention.
176
:We're learning to observe.
177
:Something begins to open.
178
:There are people who have practiced these
things even in prison around the world
179
:And many of them have come to recognize,
"Wow, I thought I had no control over that
180
:But just the ability to observe and
not be pulled into the reaction.
181
:To see that actions, reactions,
interactions are observable,
182
:and to find in the midst of
all this that I'm still here
183
:Think about what that means
184
:A person whose body is physically confined
may discover tremendous inner freedom
185
:Sometimes bodily restrictions can
amplify the discovery of inner freedom
186
:So simply just keep checking
in and apply this and look.
187
:Is that true?
188
:Is this simply something coming and going?
189
:distractions and thoughts of the mind
190
:We don't even have to spend
so much time trying to prove
191
:whether or not it's true or not
192
:If it comes and goes, that
itself tells us something.
193
:Stay put
194
:Get used to your own stillness
195
:And get familiar with that
natural state of emptiness
196
:Meaning empty of the noise of life.
197
:Not empty of love, not empty of
compassion, not empty of relationship.
198
:Empty of the unnecessary noise that
keeps us from touching life deeply
199
:Empty of concept
200
:Identification of self
201
:And who we believe ourself to be
202
:Beware of yourself in this way
203
:And from just being silent without
trying to be silent, we discover silence.
204
:Many wonderful things are
waiting to be revealed to us
205
:And, Many wonderful things are
waiting to reveal themselves to us
206
:Many wonderful things are waiting
to reveal themselves in us
207
:And it keeps expanding.
208
:And yet this expanding is taking
place against the background
209
:of unchanging awareness
210
:At the same time
211
:A paradox we can only experience.
212
:The truth of it must be experienced
213
:If we only think about it
214
:"Ah, this doesn't make sense."
215
:That is what the thinking mind does.
216
:But look, look for yourself
217
:Because when we begin choosing this,
of course, our habits and the mind may
218
:rebel against what we are discovering
219
:It is as though some power within
us does not want to go in the
220
:direction of deepening awareness
221
:Deepening understanding,
deepening compassion
222
:But rather wants us only
at a level of personhood.
223
:And six years can pass,
and we may have a beard
224
:We may not walk as straight as we used to.
225
:We may be a little bit older
226
:more wrinkles.
227
:But we have not really grown internally.
228
:Maybe much of our growth
has been external.
229
:But here, our real growth is internal,
meaning we are discovering our inner life.
230
:Inner life does not mean that we
have to give up our outer life.
231
:Outer life can go on, and we can still
have our job, and we can follow our
232
:religion, and we can follow our practice.
233
:We can raise our families
234
:See our children grow up, grandchildren
235
:We can work
236
:We can love
237
:We can laugh
238
:And we can walk through the world fully.
239
:Vietnamese Zen teaches us
not to run away from life.
240
:The practice is to touch life deeply,
241
:to recognize
242
:That nothing exists by itself alone.
243
:So inner freedom does not
remove us from one another.
244
:It makes compassion possible
245
:because when we are not imprisoned by
every movement of our mind, there is more
246
:space to truly see another human being.
247
:More space to listen.
248
:More space to understand suffering.
249
:More space to respond with loving
kindness instead of reaction
250
:And internally, somehow, something
is deepening in a way that
251
:nothing external can give us.
252
:This joy, this peace, and it is not peace
that we will have or collect or keep.
253
:It is not something to possess
254
:It is synonymous with our own being
255
:So this morning, just stay
here for another breath
256
:Nothing to chase, nothing to push away
257
:Coming, going
258
:Coming, going, again and again
259
:will always lead you back here
260
:Welcome home to yourself
261
:and state of peace and bliss and love
262
:Compassion for yourself
263
:in other beings
264
:So as we close out this
teaching meditation
265
:I'd like to devote the merit
266
:Of our time together
267
:to your practice
268
:And time and attention and focus
269
:that you give to discovering
270
:Who you are
271
:and the boundless potential of your being
that's already waiting to be discovered
272
:May we be peaceful
273
:May we be compassionate
274
:May we be free of suffering
and the causes of suffering
275
:May the peace we touch within
ourselves become peace for all beings
276
:Om Namaste Om
