Shownotes

What does it really mean to forgive someone?

In this heart-filled episode of Faithfully Explore!, kids discover that forgiveness is not about pretending hurtful things are okay. It is about learning how to let go of anger, make room for healing, and choose kindness when our hearts feel heavy.

Using the image of anger as a “heavy rock,” this episode helps children understand big feelings in a concrete, age-appropriate way. Listeners meet Lily and Leo, two friends who face a relatable accident when a spilled cup of juice ruins a special drawing. Through their story, kids see how apologies, second chances, and forgiveness can help repair the invisible bridge between friends.

Along the way, children play a “Forgave or Not?” game, cross the Friendship Bridge to explore how Christianity, Islam, and Humanism each teach about forgiveness, and move their bodies through a simple Forgiveness Flow designed to release tension and calm big emotions.

The episode also includes a beautiful Heart Berry Moon story inspired by Ojibwe tradition, in which the strawberry becomes a symbol of healing, vulnerability, and the restoration of friendship.

By the end of the adventure, kids will carry this Belief Backpack reminder:

“Forgiveness means dropping the heavy rock of anger so my heart can feel light again!”

In This Episode

Kids will explore:

  • What forgiveness means in everyday life
  • Why anger can feel heavy in our hearts
  • How apologies can help repair friendships
  • Why forgiveness does not mean forgetting or saying hurtful behavior was okay
  • How different traditions teach about compassion, mercy, and second chances
  • A movement activity for releasing angry feelings
  • The Heart Berry Moon story and the healing symbol of the strawberry

Big Ideas for Kids

Forgiveness is a brave choice.

It is okay to feel hurt or angry.

Saying “I’m sorry” matters.

Forgiveness helps friendships heal.

Letting go of anger can help your heart feel lighter.

You do not have to forgive before you are ready.

Try This After Listening

Ask your child:

  • What did anger feel like in the episode?
  • Why was Lily still allowed to feel sad about her ruined drawing?
  • What is the difference between forgiving someone and saying what happened was okay?
  • When is it easy to forgive? When is it hard?
  • What can you say when you need to apologize?

You can also try the “heavy rock” activity: have your child hold a small rock or object while naming a hurt feeling, then set it down while taking a deep breath. Talk about how forgiveness can feel like letting go of something heavy.

Laura:

Hello, faithful explorers.

2

:

I'm Laura, your guide on

today's grand audio adventure.

3

:

Grab your imaginary explorer

hats, pop them on your head,

4

:

and give them a nice little tap.

5

:

There.

6

:

Now we are officially ready to explore.

7

:

Let me ask you a big question.

8

:

Have you ever felt really angry?

9

:

Like super-duper stomp your

feet, huff and puff mad.

10

:

Maybe a brother or sister grabbed

a toy right out of your hands

11

:

without asking, or maybe a friend

at school called you a mean name.

12

:

If you've ever been that mad, wave

your arms in the air right now.

13

:

Yep, I can see all those arms waving.

14

:

It happens to everyone.

15

:

When someone hurts our feelings or ruins

our hard work, our hearts can feel heavy

16

:

and stormy, like we are carrying a dark,

dripping rain cloud everywhere we go.

17

:

But guess what?

18

:

Today, we are going to unlock

a secret superpower that lives

19

:

right inside your own chest.

20

:

It is a power that can blow

that dark rain cloud right away

21

:

and bring the sunshine back.

22

:

Faithfully Explore! Intro:

23

:

faithfully Explore!

24

:

is the name.

25

:

Learning together is our aim.

26

:

Beliefs around the globe we'll track,

filling up our Belief Backpack.

27

:

Laura: Imagine you are building

a giant tower out of blocks.

28

:

You worked on it all morning.

29

:

It is tall, beautiful, and perfect.

30

:

But suddenly, your friend

runs by, trips, and crash!

31

:

Your tower is completely ruined.

32

:

Right inside your chest, you might

feel a hot, angry, stomping feeling.

33

:

It feels like a storm cloud is raining

inside your heart, or like you are

34

:

carrying around a giant, heavy rock.

35

:

You might want to yell, cry, or

knock down their blocks to get even.

36

:

It is totally okay to

feel that way at first.

37

:

But carrying that heavy rock of

anger around all day makes you

38

:

feel tired, sad, and grumpy.

39

:

That is where our secret

human superpower comes in.

40

:

It is called forgiveness.

41

:

What do you think

forgiveness actually means?

42

:

Tell me right now.

43

:

Speak your answer on the count of three.

44

:

One, two, three.

45

:

I heard some amazing answers.

46

:

Some of you said it means making up.

47

:

Some said it means being nice.

48

:

You are all totally right.

49

:

Forgiveness is when you make

a brave choice to throw away

50

:

that heavy rock of anger.

51

:

Forgiveness means you look at the

person who hurt your feelings, you

52

:

take a deep breath, and you decide

to give them a second chance.

53

:

Forgiv-- Now listen closely, because

this part trips up a lot of kids.

54

:

Forgiveness does not mean that

what they did was totally okay.

55

:

It is still sad that your

block tower got knocked down.

56

:

And forgiveness doesn't mean you

have to forget what happened.

57

:

What it does mean is that you are choosing

to let the anger go so you can feel

58

:

happy again and fix your friendship.

59

:

It's like opening a window after

a dark storm and letting the warm

60

:

sunshine back inside your heart.

61

:

To see how this works in real life, let's

look at two friends named Leo and Lily.

62

:

Leo and Lily were sitting at the kitchen

table, working on their art projects.

63

:

Lily spent a long, long time

drawing a beautiful picture

64

:

of a flying purple dragon.

65

:

Leo was sitting right across

from her, coloring a forest.

66

:

He was reaching across the table to

grab a crayon, but as he reached, his

67

:

sleeve caught on Lily's full juice cup.

68

:

Whoosh!

69

:

Sticky apple juice spilled all over

Lily's dragon drawing, wrinkling the paper

70

:

and turning it into a big, soggy blob.

71

:

The dragon was completely ruined.

72

:

Lily's heart sank.

73

:

In a split second, her sadness turned

into a giant, hot flame of anger.

74

:

She felt that heavy

rock right in her chest.

75

:

Tears welled up in her eyes, and she

wanted to grab Leo's paper and rip it up.

76

:

Leo looked terrified.

77

:

He grabbed a paper towel,

started wiping the table, and

78

:

said, "I'm so, so sorry, Lily.

79

:

It was an accident.

80

:

Will you please forgive me?"

81

:

Lily looked at Leo's face.

82

:

She saw that his eyes were

filled with sadness and worry.

83

:

She realized she had a big choice to make.

84

:

She could keep holding on to her hot,

heavy rock of anger, which meant shouting,

85

:

staying mad, and ending their playtime.

86

:

Or she could practice her

superpower and forgive him.

87

:

Let's pause right there, explorers.

88

:

If you were Lily, would it be easy or

hard to forgive Leo in this moment?

89

:

Whisper your answer to me.

90

:

Yeah, it is really hard.

91

:

Lily was still feeling so mad.

92

:

Her beautiful drawing was gone,

and no amount of saying sorry

93

:

could magically fix the paper.

94

:

Lily took a slow, deep breath.

95

:

She looked at Leo and said

softly, "It's okay, Leo.

96

:

I know you didn't do it on

97

:

purpose.

98

:

I forgive you."

99

:

Right away, something magical happened.

100

:

That hot rock inside Lily's

chest started to melt away.

101

:

Forgiving Leo didn't bring the drawing

back, but what it did do was fix

102

:

the invisible bridge between them.

103

:

Leo smiled, the worry left his

face, and together they sat down and

104

:

started drawing a brand-new dragon.

105

:

It's game time.

106

:

Now that we've seen how Lily

used her superpower, let's play

107

:

a game called Forgave or Not Yet.

108

:

I'm gonna tell you about some kids

who have a tough choice to make.

109

:

Listen closely to what they do, and then

I want you to shout out, "They forgave!"

110

:

or, "Not yet!"

111

:

Let's play!

112

:

Sam lent his favorite toy

skateboard to his friend Noah.

113

:

Noah accidentally dropped it

on the sidewalk and cracked

114

:

the little plastic wheel.

115

:

Noah felt terrible and

said, "I'm so sorry, Sam.

116

:

I'll help you fix it."

117

:

Sam slammed his hands on his hips

and yelled, "You're clumsy, and

118

:

I'm never letting you touch my

toys again," and stomped away.

119

:

Did Sam forgive Noah?

120

:

Shout out your answers on three.

121

:

One, two, three.

122

:

Not yet.

123

:

Exactly.

124

:

Sam is still holding on to

that heavy rock of anger.

125

:

He is keeping the anger

locked up inside his chest.

126

:

Next example.

127

:

Chloe and Emma are at the beach.

128

:

Emma is building a sandcastle.

129

:

Chloe is carrying a bucket of water.

130

:

She trips and spills it,

ruining what Emma has built.

131

:

Chloe immediately apologizes.

132

:

"Emma, I'm so sorry.

133

:

I will help you build a new sandcastle."

134

:

Emma takes a deep breath

and says, "It's okay.

135

:

Let's build this one even taller."

136

:

Did Chloe forgive Emma?

137

:

One, two, three.

138

:

Shout it out.

139

:

She forgave.

140

:

Yes, Chloe dropped the rock

right away and chose to keep

141

:

having fun on their beach day.

142

:

Last example.

143

:

Lucas accidentally bumped into

Charlotte at the park while playing

144

:

tag, causing her ice cream cone

to plop right into the dirt.

145

:

Charlotte started crying because

she was sad about her ice cream.

146

:

Lucas said, "I'm so sorry, Charlotte.

147

:

I didn't see you."

148

:

Charlotte wiped her tears and looked

at Lucas and said, "I'm sad about

149

:

my treat, but it was an accident.

150

:

Can I play tag with you?"

151

:

Did Charlotte forgive Lucas?

152

:

One, two, three.

153

:

Shout it out.

154

:

She forgave.

155

:

Brilliant job, explorers.

156

:

Charlotte was still disappointed

about her ice cream, but she was

157

:

brave enough to forgive Lucas so

they could stay playground buddies.

158

:

let's cross our friendship bridge.

159

:

Close your eyes and picture a beautiful,

sturdy wooden bridge stretching

160

:

from where you are right now all

the way over a sparkling blue river.

161

:

This is the friendship bridge.

162

:

As we walk across the creaky

wooden planks, creak, croak,

163

:

creak, let's peek at how different

people around the world learn to

164

:

use the superpower of forgiveness.

165

:

First, look to the right

under that big oak tree.

166

:

Here we see teachings

from the Christian faith.

167

:

A long time ago, Jesus taught his

followers to always forgive others

168

:

because God forgives them too.

169

:

Christians tell a famous story called

The Parable of the Prodigal Son.

170

:

In this story, a young son makes a

lot of bad choices and runs away.

171

:

But when he finally comes back

home, his father doesn't yell.

172

:

Instead, the father sees him from far

away, runs down the dirt road as fast

173

:

as he can, and throws his arms around

his son in a massive hug before the son

174

:

can even finish saying, "I'm sorry."

175

:

This teaches Christians that forgiveness

should come straight from the heart.

176

:

Now look to the left, near

the beautiful rose bushes.

177

:

Here we see the traditions of Islam.

178

:

Muslims follow the teachings of

the Prophet Muhammad, who was

179

:

a very gentle and brave leader.

180

:

One time, when the Prophet

Muhammad visited a new town, some

181

:

people there were very mean to

him and even threw rocks at him.

182

:

He was hurt, but instead of getting

angry or throwing rocks back,

183

:

he stopped and prayed for them.

184

:

He said he hoped that one day those

very same people would learn to be kind.

185

:

The Qur'an, Islam's holy book,

teaches that when you are brave

186

:

enough to forgive someone, God, called

Allah, will give you a beautiful,

187

:

glowing reward: peace in your heart.

188

:

Look over there by the

sunny picnic tables.

189

:

Here we see people called humanists.

190

:

Humanists are people who don't follow

a specific religion, but they care

191

:

deeply about being good, kind neighbors.

192

:

Humanists look at forgiveness as

a super important human value.

193

:

One thoughtful humanist writer once

wrote that loving and forgiving

194

:

aren't ideas that belong to just

one group; they belong to everyone

195

:

because they are supremely human.

196

:

To a humanist, when two kids decide

to forgive each other, they are

197

:

making the world a happier, safer

place using their own human goodness.

198

:

Look around.

199

:

Even though these traditions use

different words and different stories,

200

:

they all agree on the same thing.

201

:

Holding on to anger makes us sad

and lonely, but forgiving each

202

:

other lets our heart smile again.

203

:

Whoa, that was a lot of talking.

204

:

Now let's give our bodies a little break.

205

:

Stand up for a moment, and

let's try a forgiveness flow.

206

:

This is a special physical exercise

you can do anytime you feel a

207

:

storm brewing in your chest.

208

:

First, clench your fists tight.

209

:

Bring your shoulders all

the way up to your ears.

210

:

Crunch them up.

211

:

tight.

212

:

Squeeze your eyes shut.

213

:

That's a bit like holding

on to anger inside.

214

:

Now take a deep breath

in through your nose.

215

:

Inflate your belly like a balloon.

216

:

On a slow exhale through your

mouth, release your fists

217

:

and shake your hands out.

218

:

Shake off the hurt.

219

:

Drop your shoulders down.

220

:

Ah.

221

:

Doesn't that feel a little better?

222

:

Imagine all the angry feelings

sliding off your fingertips

223

:

and disappearing into the dirt.

224

:

Next, stretch both of your arms out wide

to the sides, as wide as airplane wings.

225

:

Imagine you are opening your heart

up so big that you could give

226

:

a giant hug to the whole world.

227

:

Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe

out, wrap your arms around your chest,

228

:

giving yourself a big, cozy squeeze.

229

:

Feel the warmth in your chest.

230

:

Give yourselves a round of applause.

231

:

You moved through those steps, and maybe

you felt a bit of tension leave your body.

232

:

Anytime you feel upset later, you can

stand up and do this flow to feel better.

233

:

Now it's time for my

favorite part of the podcast.

234

:

It's story time.

235

:

I wonder what story

we're gonna hear today.

236

:

To help us understand this even

more deeply, let's listen to a

237

:

beautiful traditional story From

the Ojibwe Native American people.

238

:

It is a story about the strawberry.

239

:

Which they call ode'imin,

meaning heartberry.

240

:

It takes place during the

season of the Heartberry Moon.

241

:

The Heartberry Moon is the full

moon in June and represents

242

:

the beginning of summer

243

:

Long ago, a sister and a brother

pine marten lived together in

244

:

the beautiful green forest.

245

:

Now, pine martens are small furry

animals that look a bit like little

246

:

woodland otters mixed with kittens,

and they love to climb trees.

247

:

These two siblings were usually the best

of friends, but one bright morning, they

248

:

got into a giant disagreement over who

found a special cozy tree hollow first.

249

:

The disagreement grew bigger and

hotter like a crackling fire.

250

:

They both held onto heavy rocks of anger.

251

:

The brother pine marten chattered

angrily, and the sister pine

252

:

marten thumped her tail.

253

:

They were both saying mean words

that hurt each other's feelings.

254

:

The sister was so upset and hurt that

she turned around, ran down from the

255

:

trees, and walked far away through

the woods, leaving her brother behind.

256

:

At first, the brother stayed up in

the branches and thought, " Good,

257

:

the tree hollow is all mine now."

258

:

But as the sun started to set, the

forest grew very dark, cold, and lonely.

259

:

He looked at the cozy hollow,

but it didn't feel special at all

260

:

without his sister to share it with.

261

:

He realized his anger had chased

away his favorite playmate.

262

:

He felt a deep sadness, and his

heart grew heavy like a real stone.

263

:

He realized he had been wrong

to say those mean things.

264

:

He scrambled down the tree and ran

out into the woods to find her,

265

:

crying out to the wind, "I'm so sorry.

266

:

I wanna treat my sister

with kindness again."

267

:

The Creator looked down and saw the

sister walking far ahead on the trail.

268

:

Her head was bowed, and her

eyes were full of tears.

269

:

To help her stop crying and slow

down so her brother could catch

270

:

up, the Creator decided to put

sweet gifts on the forest path.

271

:

First, the Creator put a bush full of

ripe purple blueberries right in front

272

:

of her, but she was too sad to notice.

273

:

Then the Creator made a bush

of juicy raspberries, but she

274

:

kept walking right past them.

275

:

Finally, the Creator made a

brand new plant that had never

276

:

grown in the forest before.

277

:

It grew low to the ground with

bright red berries shaped exactly

278

:

like a little human heart.

279

:

The sweet heavenly smell of

these new berries caught the

280

:

sister pine marten's attention.

281

:

She stopped, leaned down, and tasted one.

282

:

Mmm.

283

:

As she ate the sweet berry, the

magical fruit worked like a medicine.

284

:

The anger and sadness in her heart

began to melt away, and she remembered

285

:

how much she loved her brother.

286

:

Right then, her brother came bursting

through the bushes, panting and tired.

287

:

He fell to his paws, looked

at her, and told her how truly

288

:

sorry he was for his mean words.

289

:

The sister looked down at the heart-shaped

berries, smiled, and said she was

290

:

sorry for her tail-thumping anger too.

291

:

She shared the sweet strawberries

with him, and together they scampered

292

:

back to their trees, their friendship

completely back in balance.

293

:

The Ojibwe people teach that the

strawberry is a direct medicine for

294

:

our feelings because it is shaped

just like your heart, and all of

295

:

its tiny seeds are on the outside.

296

:

The elder teachers say that having

the seeds on the outside shows us

297

:

how to be vulnerable, which means

being brave enough to open up our

298

:

hearts and share our true feelings.

299

:

Say I'm sorry and forgive.

300

:

Every year, when the heart berry

moon shines full in the sky,

301

:

the people remember to let go of

old arguments and choose love.

302

:

What's inside our Belief

Backpack this week?

303

:

Our grand adventure is coming

to a close for today, explorers.

304

:

It is time to open up your

imaginary Belief Backpack.

305

:

Unzip it with me.

306

:

Zip.

307

:

We learned so much today.

308

:

We learned that anger feels like

a heavy rock and forgiveness

309

:

feels like a light feather.

310

:

We saw how Lily and Leo rebuilt

their friendship, how traditions

311

:

around the world celebrate second

chances, and how the two pine martens

312

:

forgave under the Heartberry Moon.

313

:

Now let's pack our one-line rule

inside our Belief Backpack, so

314

:

you can carry it wherever you go.

315

:

Repeat after me so you never forget it.

316

:

Harper: Forgiveness means dropping

the heavy rock of anger so my

317

:

heart can feel light again.

318

:

Laura: Forgiveness means dropping

the heavy rock of anger, so

319

:

my heart can feel light again.

320

:

Let's say it one more

time in a silly voice to

321

:

make it extra strong.

322

:

Forgiveness means dropping

the heavy rock of anger, so

323

:

my heart can feel light again.

324

:

Laura: Zip it up tight so

it stays safe in your pack.

325

:

Zip.

326

:

Before I say goodbye, I have a very

special Belief Backpack challenge

327

:

for you to try out this week.

328

:

Sometime over the next few days,

someone you love is going to do

329

:

something that makes you feel that

hot, heavy rock of anger in your chest.

330

:

When that happens, I want you

to remember our adventure today.

331

:

Do not yell and do not stomp.

332

:

Instead, close your eyes, take a deep

breath, and imagine yourself dropping

333

:

that heavy rock right onto the ground.

334

:

Then walk up to that person,

give them a high five or a

335
