Kimberly:

Greetings and welcome to this latest episode of The Women of Rock.

Kimberly:

I'm one of your hosts, Kimberly Gunn.

Kimberly:

Hi, I'm Tammy Holzer.

Kimberly:

Hey, and our channel is all about our favorite rock musicians and

Kimberly:

the goings on in the rock world.

Kimberly:

So before we move forward, please remember to like, subscribe and hit the bell for

Kimberly:

notifications to help our channel grow.

Kimberly:

So now you know we are gonna be featuring and talking about one of

Kimberly:

Tammy's favorite bands, foo Fighters, and all the goings on with the new

Kimberly:

drummer, the new show, and what's been going on in the world with them.

Kimberly:

So Tammy, I know you are a huge diehard Foo Fighters fan and our Women of Rock,

Kimberly:

podcast started with a tribute to Taylor Hawkins way back when, in September, 2022.

Kimberly:

what's been going on in the world of the Foo Fighters?

Tammy:

Oh my God.

Tammy:

Okay.

Tammy:

So much the in the last.

Tammy:

Three weeks so much has happened.

Tammy:

They rolled out the intro of their new drummer, Josh GREs, which

Tammy:

everybody probably knows right now.

Tammy:

But they did that in a really cool way with, with the, looked

Tammy:

like a band rehearsal video.

Tammy:

And then a couple days later they started.

Tammy:

Their first shows and then a couple days after that, they rolled out their new

Tammy:

album and it's just been an emotional rollercoaster for everybody, for me,

Tammy:

for the fans, I'm sure for the band.

Tammy:

it's been highly emotional, so we have a lot to talk about today.

Kimberly:

Awesome, awesome.

Kimberly:

You know, and I was able to check out that re rehearsal video and I thought

Kimberly:

it was really clever the way it started out, and it had a lot of comedy, and

Kimberly:

I think that really helped to kind of lighten up and, and, you know, start

Kimberly:

off on a, kinda like a new, new footing.

Kimberly:

What did you think about that?

Tammy:

So I thought it was great.

Tammy:

So first of all, when they released it, the first few people that came

Tammy:

in the room like Chad from Red Hot Chili Peppers, the idea is that these

Tammy:

are kind of drummers that knew Taylor Hawkins but also maybe had been rumored

Tammy:

to be joining Foo Fighters, you know?

Tammy:

So Chad walked in first and I thought that was super funny.

Tammy:

And then Tommy Lee walked in and Tommy Lee was wearing a vandals

Tammy:

t-shirt and he had PF Changs.

Tammy:

And at that moment I knew it was Josh Freese because I followed Josh Freese

Tammy:

on Instagram and he's all about, he's, he, is really, you know what?

Tammy:

He's weird.

Tammy:

And he'll, he, by his own admission, he's like, this Instagram is weird.

Tammy:

Like, welcome, welcome to the circus.

Tammy:

But, so he's got this thing with PF Chang's.

Tammy:

and his first band that he ever played in was the Vandals.

Tammy:

So I knew right then it's Jo, it's gotta be Josh.

Tammy:

And so it was just kind of like Easter egg things, 'you

Tammy:

know, showing that it was Josh.

Tammy:

And then the third person comes in and it's Danny from Tool

Tammy:

and he's, he has two poodles.

Tammy:

And then it was like, done, cuz Josh Freese has three poodles,

Tammy:

so they're standardized poodles.

Tammy:

So I was just like, holy cow, it's Josh Freese.

Tammy:

So like, I loved it cuz it was super upbeat.

Tammy:

It was, the whole thing.

Tammy:

And then they opened with all my life, which is always like the most

Tammy:

high energy song that they have.

Tammy:

They always get the crowd going.

Tammy:

And Dave was smiling, the whole band was smiling, everybody was happy.

Tammy:

Josh was wearing a, a name tag that said, says, hi, my name is Josh, you know.

Tammy:

So I just thought it was hysterical and, and it made me feel.

Tammy:

Super excited for, for Josh, like, and, and to have Josh and I know how

Tammy:

talented he is and he's like the perfect

Kimberly:

fit.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

That's awesome.

Kimberly:

And, and just to kind of review some of the, the discussions that we've had on

Kimberly:

several of the episodes, you know, Taylor Hawkins, the, the drummer passed away

Kimberly:

and, we were talking about that, how they were gonna deal with his, replacement.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

I mean, he's really irreplaceable, but, for the band to find a way to

Kimberly:

move forward, here we are, you know, with a, with a new, new band member.

Kimberly:

How do you feel about that aspect of it?

Kimberly:

Well, let

Tammy:

me just say for people watching, our first episode was a recap of the

Tammy:

Taylor Hawkins tribute concert, and so that's what kicked off, sort of

Tammy:

our format in Women of Rock because.

Tammy:

because of that show and it was highly emotional.

Tammy:

You know, you can go back and we'll link it down below,

Tammy:

you can go back and watch it.

Tammy:

But since then it's been really interesting.

Tammy:

One of the points I wanted to make today about everything that's happened in the

Tammy:

last three weeks with the Foo Fighters is that they've rolled out stuff very quickly

Tammy:

and for my own experience, and I wonder how many other people feel this too, it.

Tammy:

I am still processing Taylor Hawkins passing away.

Tammy:

So in that time, from the last concerts in September, tribute

Tammy:

concerts, there was, we heard nothing.

Tammy:

You know, there were Dave sightings here and there, and those concerts were

Tammy:

so emotional and, and heart-wrenching.

Tammy:

I, for myself, took a few weeks to like recover from that emotionally

Tammy:

and then, You know, time goes on and, nothing, so New Year's day or, or New

Tammy:

Year's Eve, Dave had posted a letter On social media basically saying that

Tammy:

they're gonna move forward, and it's like, okay, they're gonna move forward.

Tammy:

So again, no word, no nothing until this video was released.

Tammy:

So in, in May, so from September to, and maybe even before then.

Tammy:

From September to May, they've been making an album.

Tammy:

They've been making plans to tour.

Tammy:

They've been going through.

Tammy:

Not only have they been making an album, they've been grieving, they've

Tammy:

been coming together as a band.

Tammy:

They've been going through this whole process and, and

Tammy:

now are in a different place.

Tammy:

They're, I'm, I'm sure you know, they're still grieving.

Tammy:

They're still getting used to like, It.

Tammy:

The grievance is never done, but they're further ahead than let's say I am

Tammy:

because when I started to see that video with Josh Fries first I was excited.

Tammy:

And then when I saw the first clips of Boston Calling, which was their

Tammy:

first festival a few days later, and Shane Hawkins got up And performed

Tammy:

a song with the Foo Fighters.

Tammy:

And that's a great clip.

Tammy:

We'll reference that down here.

Tammy:

I don't know if you saw that, Kimberly, but it's a hysterical

Tammy:

clip and it's really good.

Tammy:

So when that happened, I started to feel like, oh, you know, like.

Tammy:

Even though Josh is one of the most, if not the most amazing drummer in the world

Tammy:

right now, most accomplished, he's a, a really accomplished sessioned drummer.

Tammy:

He is highly sought out.

Tammy:

He is probably the best suited technically for this band.

Tammy:

It's not Taylor.

Tammy:

It's not.

Tammy:

There's not that emotional connection to Josh yet.

Tammy:

and Josh doesn't appear to be a very emotional guy, and Josh isn't gonna

Tammy:

get out from behind the drums and sing a Queen song like Taylor did.

Tammy:

And so, and Taylor played with such passion and heart and emotion.

Tammy:

Not that Josh doesn't, but it's just different.

Tammy:

It's just a different feel.

Tammy:

And so to see Shane up there playing with so much.

Tammy:

Teen angst, grief and passion, just full on passion.

Tammy:

it kind of hurt.

Tammy:

It kind of hurt to see it.

Tammy:

And then I started to realize like, you know, this isn't,

Tammy:

this is, this is a little weird.

Tammy:

It's not gonna be as easy as, okay, Josh is in and we're just gonna move on.

Tammy:

And things are different.

Tammy:

Josh plays different, Josh plays just a tiny bit faster, you know, or, and.

Tammy:

It's a different dynamic with the band, and it sounds a little different.

Tammy:

Taylor, I didn't realize how much Taylor was a backup singer

Tammy:

to Dave and how much he's sang.

Tammy:

You know, that's gone.

Tammy:

And then there's some different Oh, okay.

Tammy:

Things, things are a little di, just a little different.

Tammy:

And then when they released the album, that's when I just lost it.

Tammy:

That's when, that's when all of the grief came surfacing up.

Tammy:

And I know I, I thought I was the only one, but I am not the only one

Tammy:

because I saw it all over online.

Tammy:

I saw men, I saw everybody just sobbing, you know, reading the

Tammy:

lyrics, listening to the music.

Tammy:

And that was a good two weeks for me solid, like waves of grief for

Tammy:

two solid weeks, which is nothing in the, in the, in the time of grief.

Tammy:

But it's been about two weeks since.

Tammy:

Since that album has come out.

Tammy:

So that's been part of the rollercoaster.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Yeah, that, that's so interesting because we've, a couple of the episodes

Kimberly:

we focus on that, grief and, and how do we process the grief of these

Kimberly:

musicians that we don't really know personally, but we feel that we do, we

Kimberly:

really do in a lot of ways because the music has been a part of our lives.

Kimberly:

And so, to hear you talk about it in those terms, I can imagine, I can feel

Kimberly:

how emotional it was and, and still obviously is for you and probably

Kimberly:

a lot of the Food Fighters fans.

Kimberly:

Huh?

Tammy:

Yes.

Tammy:

And there's another added layer of this, and that is that Dave's mom

Tammy:

passed away during, last summer.

Tammy:

And so after Taylor passed away in March, Dave lost his

Tammy:

mother in July, I think, July.

Tammy:

They don't have the exact date.

Tammy:

And so, you know, he wrote a, she was all over the scene.

Tammy:

Everybody knew Dave's mom and knew the special bond that they had together and

Tammy:

also, He, he wrote a book with her, from Cradle to Stage, which is a great book.

Tammy:

I read it about, she interviewed and they actually made a TV show

Tammy:

out of it too, like a series on, I think it's Paramount, I think.

Tammy:

But anyway.

Tammy:

Interviewing all these different musicians and their mothers.

Tammy:

She mostly the, their mothers about, did they know if it this, you know,

Tammy:

Pharrell Williams was gonna be a music, you know, huge musician or Getty Lee from

Tammy:

Rush, you know, this great interviews.

Tammy:

But anyway, there was this added layer of grief because

Tammy:

when the songs came out, ugh.

Tammy:

You know, like reading the lyrics, hearing the songs, and there was

Tammy:

something I think, I believe that came through energetically in

Tammy:

the songs that was just crushing.

Tammy:

So for me, I have a son I knew, I know what that mother son bond is like.

Tammy:

oh my God.

Tammy:

I'm gonna burst into tears now.

Tammy:

Thinking, like hearing from Dave's perspective, how crushing

Tammy:

it was to lose his mother.

Tammy:

Awful.

Tammy:

See, like, I'm, I'm still emotional about it.

Tammy:

It's so, it's absolutely crushing heartbreaking in the best possible way,

Tammy:

like, We're all going to experience grief.

Tammy:

Like if you haven't experienced it yet, you're going to, if you love somebody,

Tammy:

which hopefully we all do, even if it's an animal, even if it's somebody you

Tammy:

don't even know, you know, but most of all, those that you love dearly.

Tammy:

And when, he wrote, he wrote these songs from his own.

Tammy:

Experience of grief, and you could just feel it, you could

Tammy:

just read it like any, anytime.

Tammy:

Some of the, well, and the other thing was, is they released all of

Tammy:

the videos with the lyrics mm-hmm.

Tammy:

On YouTube, and they kind of, you know, streamed them out one by one and

Tammy:

then they released the album and then, and then they released all of the.

Tammy:

You know, all of the songs.

Tammy:

So you, you hear it and you read the lyrics and it's so, it just,

Tammy:

it's just crushing, you know?

Tammy:

So you're, I was kind of like, some of it sounded like grief about Taylor.

Tammy:

Some of it was grief about his mom.

Tammy:

He wrote a song called The Teacher.

Tammy:

His mom was a school teacher for over 30 years, and he wrote a 10 minute epic song.

Tammy:

that's a masterpiece.

Tammy:

The whole, the whole album is a masterpiece.

Tammy:

It really, that was my first thought when I heard everything.

Tammy:

I'm like, this is a masterpiece.

Tammy:

This is, this isn't any, like anything.

Tammy:

We've, I don't know, maybe from my generation, have

Tammy:

ever seen or experienced or.

Tammy:

And the fact that it's touching so many people on that grief

Tammy:

level, it's really healing.

Tammy:

But this is what the band has been going through.

Tammy:

You know, back to your point of like what happened after Taylor Hawkins concerts

Tammy:

to now this is what they've been doing.

Tammy:

So I'm sure it's, I mean, I can't even imagine the level of.

Tammy:

Emotion and everything, but we're just hearing it for the first time.

Tammy:

So I feel like there's this catching up.

Tammy:

Like they released everything so fast, that video, all of a sudden

Tammy:

they're out on the road in concerts.

Tammy:

And then that album, it was just like, I can't, I can't, I'm not,

Tammy:

I'm not where you guys are yet.

Tammy:

You know, like I'm so glad that wherever they are in their, you know,

Tammy:

in their grief journey, It's ahead of where we are because it end, we

Tammy:

didn't have that experience after the Taylor Rocks tribute concerts.

Tammy:

We were, that's where my grief stopped.

Tammy:

So to have this, you know, and then it, it just, it touches on your own grief.

Tammy:

It's not just, I'm so sad for day, you know, although I am, but

Tammy:

there's something about it that.

Tammy:

Touches your own experience of grief and allows you to heal.

Tammy:

And that's what I've been reading about comments online, people commenting,

Tammy:

I, I lost my mom or you know, I lost so and so, or my spouse or whatever.

Tammy:

And, and, and that is, that is a universal theme.

Tammy:

That is something we will all go through and.

Tammy:

They just did it so brilliantly and you know, just one other note about

Tammy:

back to the Taylor Hawkins concerts, that was something we've never seen.

Tammy:

We talked about that a lot on this show too.

Tammy:

We have never seen that kind of tribute.

Tammy:

I have never experienced that kind of an emotion, grief and

Tammy:

celebration at, at a show.

Tammy:

I mean, I wasn't even at the show.

Tammy:

I was watching, you know, streaming it online, but.

Tammy:

That's something we've never seen.

Tammy:

And this album is the same way.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

You know, you just, you put out so much, with that, last, bit of information and

Kimberly:

I think one of the things that really struck me as you were talking, that I

Kimberly:

thought about was, this is like one of the first bands that I can think of in

Kimberly:

a long time that has lost a member that then keeps going and it's been such a.

Kimberly:

You know, public kind of grieving process because we've had musicians pass away,

Kimberly:

but a lot of the times they were solo artists so they didn't have a, another,

Kimberly:

band to, to pick up and keep going.

Kimberly:

So we've obviously grieved for people that we've lost.

Kimberly:

But here, they're this huge band.

Kimberly:

Taylor was such a key part of the band, as you said, not just the drumming,

Kimberly:

but the, the background vocals.

Kimberly:

and to.

Kimberly:

Keep pushing forward in light of all that, I think is really spectacular.

Kimberly:

I think they've done an amazing job honoring his, his musical presence, but

Kimberly:

still finding a way to move forward with the band and, and acknowledge the fans.

Kimberly:

You know, I know that the Foo Fighters fans are die hard and obviously the band

Kimberly:

members in Dave Grohl celebrate them.

Kimberly:

And I thought, I think that's just so interesting to, to see and

Kimberly:

experience and to have you on, talking about it as well, your own personal

Kimberly:

feelings as a, as a big fan about it.

Tammy:

Well, one, you know, remember Foo Fighters were born out of the

Tammy:

ashes of Nirvana, and after Kurt Cobain passed away, and Dave Grohl.

Tammy:

recorded some songs on his own as a way to heal from Nirvana and

Tammy:

from Kurt Cobain passing away.

Tammy:

So, that's how this band was born.

Tammy:

And you're right, I, there have been a lot of musicians that have passed

Tammy:

away over the years, but this is the first time we're seeing it public.

Tammy:

No other band has had a tribute concert other than like, Queen but

Tammy:

that was years later, you know, Freddie Mercury's, tribute, but

Tammy:

that was years and years later.

Tammy:

So, I, I would say Queen is the other, exception, but I don't know

Tammy:

that they were very public about it.

Tammy:

So this is kind of the first public in a way, and I, I think it's such

Tammy:

a beautiful template for tributes and, and that kind of thing.

Tammy:

but also I know that.

Tammy:

Davis talked several times over the years in interviews that the only

Tammy:

way he knew how to move forward after Nirvana was to play music.

Tammy:

That was the thing that was going to heal him.

Tammy:

So I kind of knew that he was gonna move forward in some way

Tammy:

and, and now I understand because that's what he did after Nirvana.

Tammy:

I don't know how he did it after his mom passed away the same year.

Tammy:

That's, that's kind of the resilience, of just being able to, to do something

Tammy:

that quickly and, and be, somewhat on the road again and, and all that.

Tammy:

Now, I also wanna say things, it looks like things are changing in a good way.

Tammy:

I think that they're taking on less shows.

Tammy:

I, I think, I think the tour, I imagine the touring schedule's

Tammy:

gonna change and not be so heavy.

Tammy:

I think that the shows are going to be two hours instead of three hours.

Tammy:

I think that, I just think maybe the message out of some of that was

Tammy:

that they needed to slow down a bit.

Tammy:

And, and, you know, dare I say, practice some more self-care, or,

Tammy:

or have a, have better balance because they would, they would play

Tammy:

any gig anywhere night after night.

Tammy:

and, and not really have any boundaries.

Tammy:

And, there were some reports of Taylor, really struggling with that toward the

Tammy:

end and struggling with the pace and struggling with the workload, especially

Tammy:

as a drummer, such a physical, you know, and the way that he drums and mm-hmm.

Tammy:

So, I've noticed that I've, I don't know if it will continue, but I've noticed it.

Tammy:

I've checked out their tour schedule and, and that kind of thing, and I'm

Tammy:

like, you know, even watching that video.

Tammy:

From their, their introduction of Josh Freese.

Tammy:

Even then, like they would do songs and they would take a little

Tammy:

break in between and you would see Josh like, like breathing.

Tammy:

Really like catching his breath.

Tammy:

Cuz he pleas a beast.

Tammy:

Like he plays like you wouldn't believe, but they didn't just go right.

Tammy:

You know, they, it, it didn't seem like they were pushing, they were playing

Tammy:

really hard, but they were taking breaks.

Tammy:

And I'm like, that's different.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

That's really different.

Tammy:

so I wonder if that is, is part of how it will be from now on too,

Tammy:

which I think is really healthy.

Tammy:

I don't know if it will.

Tammy:

It's just something I, I've noticed.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

And I wanted to talk a little bit about their tour, cause

Kimberly:

I was, checking that out too.

Kimberly:

I know it's running through January, I think 24 and they hit, north

Kimberly:

America and then they go, I think to Canada and then down under as well.

Kimberly:

Are you, are you able to catch 'em on this, this tour?

Tammy:

I'm trying.

Tammy:

Everything's sold out.

Tammy:

Oh, wow.

Tammy:

In the us Oh, yeah.

Tammy:

I mean, beyond sold out.

Tammy:

So I'm trying, I'm, I'm still watching for tickets.

Tammy:

but I think they, they're in North Amer and they're not playing that many shows,

Tammy:

so they're playing some festivals, some, you know, large festivals.

Tammy:

They've got some shows, and the shows are kind of random, like Spokane, Washington.

Tammy:

I'm like, dang my hometown.

Tammy:

Are you freaking kidding?

Tammy:

That's sold out.

Tammy:

But but that's not a huge, you know, it's not like LA or New

Tammy:

York or anything like that.

Tammy:

They're playing like some, I think they're playing I think like Salt Lake

Tammy:

City or, you know, like kind of some random, city, like maybe, I don't know.

Tammy:

I don't know why they're playing those areas, but.

Tammy:

But they are, and everything's sold out.

Tammy:

And then they go to Europe, for a while.

Tammy:

And I think I, I, I'm sure they'll, they'll be announcing more dates in 2024.

Tammy:

So if I can't get on the show this year, which I am gonna try everything I can too.

Tammy:

But if not, I'm sure they're gonna be touring again in 2024.

Tammy:

And it'll be really interesting to see how that schedule looks.

Tammy:

And if they do change, and if they do, I wonder.

Tammy:

If Josh will continue to be that primary drummer.

Tammy:

I mean, it sounds like you will, but I wonder if they'll

Tammy:

interject Shane here and there.

Tammy:

That'll be interesting.

Tammy:

and, Dave's daughter, violet has been singing background vocals here and there,

Tammy:

and she's been doing that for the band for a while and she's got an amazing voice.

Tammy:

Yes, she does.

Tammy:

So it, it's, and it's really cool, you know, like, like we talked about

Tammy:

with our episode on Crowded House.

Tammy:

What I noticed, like having that father son, the father sons play in the same

Tammy:

band, like it just, it infused so much.

Tammy:

The next generation, you know, it infused so much energy and you can't

Tammy:

get those tones anywhere else, you know?

Tammy:

So I'm really kind of happy to see.

Tammy:

Violet and Shane who are like, I, I believe they're both

Tammy:

like 16, 16, 17 at the most.

Tammy:

but I think around, anyway, it's really great to see them and I, I

Tammy:

suspect and hope that, that that continues, but we'll see over time.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

You know, what, what kind of role they play.

Kimberly:

Yeah, I wanted to just, just touch on what you were talking about

Kimberly:

with the, you know, a lighter schedule or, concerts that aren't as long and,

Kimberly:

I wonder how, I, I can't imagine what it takes to get up there and do that

Kimberly:

night after night show after show and looking over at the drum set and not

Kimberly:

seeing Taylor and just that emotional heaviness of how that plays into.

Kimberly:

You know the tour as well.

Kimberly:

You know it's mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

So

Tammy:

I can't imagine it.

Tammy:

Yeah, I mean, exactly.

Tammy:

It's not, you're right.

Tammy:

Not even just the physical, it's the emotional toll.

Tammy:

I can't imagine what that first show felt like and Yeah, and to

Tammy:

look back and to play with somebody for over 25 years, 26 years, and.

Tammy:

And who knows what happened.

Tammy:

this is where a cut of my mind goes with the grief and stuff too.

Tammy:

who knows what happened in those last moments?

Tammy:

We don't know what kind of trauma the band's dealing with either you.

Tammy:

It's a traumatic situation.

Tammy:

So not only have they lost somebody, they're probably dealing with some

Tammy:

pretty serious trauma as well.

Tammy:

The whole family is one thing I, I did notice too is they're bringing their

Tammy:

families, all of their families, and Taylor Hawkins family too, his ex,

Tammy:

his wife, Allison, you know, the kids, everybody, the families are traveling

Tammy:

with the band and the shows and I think that that's really cool and I

Tammy:

think they've really banded together.

Tammy:

I think it's great that they're in.

Tammy:

I, I mean, I don't know what the protocol is, but, but that Allison's

Tammy:

still so involved and the kids are still so involved and it's like they're

Tammy:

still, they're still part of the band.

Tammy:

They're still, you know, Taylor's gone, but they're still part of the band and.

Tammy:

I noticed on Taylor's on the one year, back in March, on the one year

Tammy:

anniversary of Taylor's passing, Alison threw a party for everybody.

Tammy:

Alison threw a backyard barbecue and Dave Gro was, you know, he loves to barbecue.

Tammy:

He's got his whole barbecue thing, and he was out there barbecuing.

Tammy:

You know, I saw they didn't really announce that I just saw, you know, like

Tammy:

one or two social media pics, but, That somebody, somebody from the party snapped.

Tammy:

But it was a family, it was a family barbecue and it was a celebration of life.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

You know, and I thought, God, that's great.

Tammy:

You know, I've hit some one year anniversaries with, you know, some people

Tammy:

that have passed and that first and even the second year, those anniversaries

Tammy:

are really tough and you just, kind of batten down the hatches and, and

Tammy:

try to create some rituals around.

Tammy:

You know how to handle that day.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

the, the first birthday, the first, holiday, the first anniversary, and,

Tammy:

I even have a network of friends that, we call and, relatives and we,

Tammy:

call and reach out to each other, Hey, I know it's the anniversary.

Tammy:

How are you doing?

Tammy:

You know, like, and just, just to have that acknowledgement.

Tammy:

And I, and so I always looked at it as this thing to kind of dread and.

Tammy:

And how am I going to get through it?

Tammy:

Or, or again, what ritual can I, can I create or something?

Tammy:

Never in a million years did I think of having a barbecue.

Tammy:

That's fucking awesome.

Tammy:

I love that they did that.

Tammy:

I'm sure it was emotional, but they were all together.

Tammy:

I really think that, and from what David said, I really think that they're getting

Tammy:

through this as a family, as a band, as a family, as that whole family unit.

Tammy:

And embracing it and getting through the, you know, the best way they can

Tammy:

by celebrating, I think it's wonderful.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

But to your point, it has gotta be so emotional night after night,

Tammy:

that emotional toll is exhausting.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

Too.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

Cuz it, you know, it's one thing to have a one-off concert, right.

Kimberly:

And then, but it's another thing to have to come back and do it again.

Kimberly:

And, and to have those feelings keep coming up over and over and over again.

Kimberly:

So.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

You know, I've looked at them, go through this process and I've

Kimberly:

learned so much just about the band from you and, and our discussion.

Kimberly:

So I really appreciate that because I think it's, you know, there's, with all

Kimberly:

of it, there's a larger dynamic going on it, it's grief and how we move through it.

Kimberly:

And I know that it's, you know, it's, it's a,

Tammy:

it's a, it's, it's bigger than the band.

Tammy:

It's bigger.

Tammy:

Bigger than, than.

Tammy:

The album, it is that grief, it is that, that universal, that human experience.

Kimberly:

And, you know, they could have said, you know, we're, we're done.

Kimberly:

I, I know that.

Kimberly:

la last thing I heard with, Fleetwood Mac, I saw an interview

Kimberly:

with, with, the drummer.

Kimberly:

Is it Mick?

Kimberly:

Mick Fleetwood, right?

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

And he was saying after Christine passed, he was like, the, the band is done.

Kimberly:

They're like, we're not moving forward.

Kimberly:

We can't move forward without her.

Kimberly:

She was such a, she was a pillar, a member of the band.

Kimberly:

So, you know, that was then, I don't know how they feel now.

Kimberly:

And so that was a choice where they decided to say, we're

Kimberly:

not gonna get back together.

Kimberly:

So I think for the Foo Fighters to, to say, we're gonna keep going.

Kimberly:

We're gonna, we have this drummer over here.

Kimberly:

He's with us.

Kimberly:

I think it's amazing.

Kimberly:

I I really do.

Kimberly:

Because they could have, I'm surprised

Tammy:

that done something different best.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

I really am.

Tammy:

I am.

Tammy:

I, I thought it might be a couple years, but to come, so they must

Tammy:

have picked up right after the Taylor Hawkins shows because, I saw on

Tammy:

Instagram, Josh Freese's wife, Nic Freese for anybody on, on Instagram.

Tammy:

She had posted right after they announced Josh, she'd posted, I've

Tammy:

had to keep this quiet for months and months, and I thought months and months,

Tammy:

like we just found out, you know?

Tammy:

So how long has this been going on?

Tammy:

Like how long has this been going on?

Tammy:

you know, we, we didn't know.

Tammy:

So was it at right after the Taylor Hawkins tribute?

Tammy:

Cause was it before?

Tammy:

You know, I don't know.

Tammy:

may in any case, it's been, it's been going on a while, so I am.

Tammy:

Pleasantly surprised.

Tammy:

it's much faster than I thought.

Tammy:

And that's kind of been part of the adjustment period.

Tammy:

There's an adjustment period too.

Tammy:

Like, wait, they've been working on working on this and Wait, I have to.

Tammy:

Okay.

Tammy:

Josh is in, by the way, Josh plays for a lot of other bands.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

If you look him up, You know, Wikipedia, him, Google him, look on his Instagram.

Tammy:

He has played for legendary bands.

Tammy:

And so even to get his availability, like he must have had to clear it

Tammy:

must have taken his some time to, you know, he, he was on tour at

Tammy:

the Offspring, he was on tour with.

Tammy:

Devo, Danny Elman, you know, like so many other bands and

Tammy:

I'm, and recording sessions.

Tammy:

I'm like, wow.

Tammy:

What?

Tammy:

He must have had to clear off his calendar, but he's now, you know, with

Tammy:

arguably the biggest rock band in the world and all those other bands, I saw

Tammy:

a lot of tributes from, from Devo and, and, you know, congratulating him.

Tammy:

And, so it's, it's really cool.

Tammy:

To have that kind of staggering loss and to come back and losses for

Tammy:

Dave, not just Taylor, but his mom.

Tammy:

I just, I don't understand how he's doing it.

Tammy:

I don't know how he's doing it.

Tammy:

And, and, and he's being very emotional about it, which is great, which I love.

Tammy:

He's not trying to push through, he is not trying to, like, he's openly

Tammy:

emotional and that's what I love.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

But still moving forward.

Tammy:

And it's gotta be exhausting.

Tammy:

You know, I, I think about like, when Michael Hutchins

Tammy:

died from in excess, years ago.

Tammy:

That band never recovered, you know, I mean, it took them 10 years

Tammy:

to even think about getting a new singer and playing again, 10 years.

Tammy:

So, I, I just, I can't believe they're doing it so quick.

Tammy:

I'm thrilled.

Tammy:

And, and that we get to experience it and grieve together and all of it.

Tammy:

And I haven't even talked about the shows yet, you know, like,

Tammy:

what that experience must be like.

Tammy:

Dave Grohl just put out a note the other day.

Tammy:

They finished up, I guess the, maybe the first leg of their tour.

Tammy:

he said he just wanted to thank everybody and that, he sees

Tammy:

everybody in the audience.

Tammy:

He's like, when, you know, when you sing, I sing louder.

Tammy:

When you scream, I scream louder.

Tammy:

You know, when you, when you cry, you know, it brings it ear to my eye too.

Tammy:

So, I have to think those shows are so emotional.

Tammy:

And you know what?

Tammy:

This for me is coming off the heels of Depeche mode.

Tammy:

You know, I just went and saw Depeche Mode a few months ago,

Tammy:

which we have that episode too.

Tammy:

And that was on the heels of Andrew Fletcher Die Fletcher dying.

Tammy:

And that show was so emotional, so and so uplifting.

Tammy:

So I know, and I would think that the Foo Fighters.

Tammy:

Is probably even more emotional.

Tammy:

I would, I would say, yeah.

Tammy:

I mean, Depeche Mode was crazy emotional, and I think the Foo Fighters, I would

Tammy:

probably be a puddle and probably will be, when I get a ticket to go this year.

Tammy:

I'm manifesting that, but yeah, you'll get a ticket.

Tammy:

So, but it's, but in the best possible way, emotions are great.

Tammy:

Like we shouldn't be afraid of emotions.

Tammy:

This is.

Tammy:

This is life, this is it.

Tammy:

And to, but to be able to do that together and in such a healing place, like a

Tammy:

concert or music or listening to an album.

Tammy:

I mean, it's just, it, it's just the whole experience is, I, I

Tammy:

don't even have a word for it.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

I, I really don't.

Tammy:

I mean, the album is a masterpiece.

Tammy:

Everything that's just the best possible.

Tammy:

Word I can come up with with the whole experience, but

Tammy:

it's even bigger than that.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

It, it's huge.

Kimberly:

And I think that, you know, I'll, I'll put out an another, request.

Kimberly:

If, if Dave Grohl or anyone from the band or, or their management is watching

Kimberly:

this episode, please send Tammy a ticket because she's such a huge fan.

Tammy:

Get a ticket.

Tammy:

Oh, that's very nice.

Tammy:

Thank you.

Tammy:

I appreciate that.

Kimberly:

You know, seek, and you she'll find and, cause you never know.

Kimberly:

Yes, yes.

Kimberly:

If you don't ask, you'll never get it.

Kimberly:

That's right.

Kimberly:

Nope.

Kimberly:

But I think it, you know, the larger, or one larger component, and we've

Kimberly:

talked about this before on the show, is that, you know, we're all

Kimberly:

going to be experiencing the loss of band members that we love and

Kimberly:

people that we love just because of the natural aging process, right?

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

And so, mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

I think the way they're handling it is, like you said, it's like

Kimberly:

a role model or blueprint for,

Tammy:

for other people.

Tammy:

It's really healthy.

Tammy:

Yeah.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

Yes.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Yes, for sure.

Kimberly:

And the, the fact that they're move, the, the fact that they're so public,

Kimberly:

ab, I mean, they're public and obviously private, but you know, they're, I guess

Kimberly:

maybe public isn't the right word.

Kimberly:

Maybe it's emotional.

Kimberly:

Cuz I read that article, about the letter that Dave Girl wrote, to the

Kimberly:

fans and really thanking the fans.

Kimberly:

And I, I know that.

Kimberly:

The fan base has really also helped to push them forward too.

Kimberly:

I know that that's been a big part of it too, and so to, yeah.

Kimberly:

See, I always

Tammy:

love it.

Tammy:

It's a mutual grieving, you know, all around, which is really cool.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

And shared, shared grieving, I guess, shared, shared in different

Tammy:

ways, different levels, and, and, For different reasons, but yeah.

Kimberly:

And one, one thing that stuck out one line, I think he said

Kimberly:

that, you know, they're singing the songs, but they have a new meaning now.

Kimberly:

And I thought, mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

That's really interesting.

Kimberly:

So I'll be curious to see how, as they continue to tour and put out new

Kimberly:

music, how their sound changes to, you know, accommodate a new player.

Kimberly:

Right.

Kimberly:

Because it's gonna be different.

Kimberly:

It

Tammy:

is.

Tammy:

It's already different.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

It's already different.

Tammy:

Yeah, you can hear it's different.

Tammy:

It feels different.

Tammy:

It's different.

Tammy:

And there have been some people who have, complained about, oh,

Tammy:

Josh Free's place, faster, or It sounds different, or, or whatever.

Tammy:

yeah, it is different.

Tammy:

and embrace it.

Tammy:

Be happy that they're even out because given the choice, nobody, nobody would.

Tammy:

Want Josh Freese there.

Tammy:

We would want Taylor back every, including Josh, Josh was friends with Taylor.

Tammy:

They came up in the Orange County, music scene together.

Tammy:

They were the same age.

Tammy:

They came from the same area.

Tammy:

They knew each other well.

Tammy:

So, you know, Josh would never have wanted the str, anybody would

Tammy:

give anything to have Taylor back.

Tammy:

But that's not the way it is.

Tammy:

So shut the hell off.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

Really.

Kimberly:

So, stop your complaining and,

Tammy:

yeah, stop.

Tammy:

I mean, I get it, but, right, and, and you know, like that's

Tammy:

part of the grief process too.

Tammy:

Those people don't realize it, you know, they might be complaining,

Tammy:

oh, it doesn't sound the same, or whatever, but really what that is,

Tammy:

is, you know, repressed, hurt or anger that, you know, Taylor's gone.

Tammy:

And that's what that is.

Tammy:

Well, and,

Kimberly:

and the reality is that's a choice too, because they could

Kimberly:

have tried to find someone who sounded exactly like Taylor, right?

Kimberly:

Someone who's trying to emulate his style.

Kimberly:

But you,

Tammy:

you can't, the only person that can do that is Shane.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

His son.

Tammy:

And interestingly enough, Shane drums more like Dave, then Taylor.

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Tammy:

Shane style.

Tammy:

It, it looks like Dave Grohl.

Tammy:

Yeah.

Tammy:

I mean it just, the way he pounds the drums and he is so into it.

Tammy:

He, it, he is, he looks way more like Dave Grohl than his dad,

Tammy:

which is really interesting.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

It, it's just such an interesting, yeah.

Kimberly:

It's such an interesting situation and I'm, I'm just excited for,

Kimberly:

you know, the Foo Fighters fans.

Kimberly:

Cause I know that they love this band.

Kimberly:

And to see them out there, I wish them so much success with the rest of the tour.

Kimberly:

Hope they maintain their physical and mental and emotional mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Wellbeing and the fans as well, because it's, it's all

Kimberly:

gonna continue to be emotional.

Kimberly:

Right.

Kimberly:

Right.

Tammy:

It is.

Tammy:

It is.

Kimberly:

and I hope, like I said one more time, Mr.

Kimberly:

Grohl, foo Fighters Management or anybody of that ilk?

Kimberly:

Send my girl Tammy T, our girl Tammy Tea ticket so she can come see your shows.

Tammy:

Absolutely.

Tammy:

That's very nice.

Tammy:

Yes, I will gladly accept that.

Kimberly:

Awesome.

Kimberly:

What else is going on in the world of the Foo Fighters?

Kimberly:

Anything else you wanna report out on Tammy?

Tammy:

I don't think so.

Tammy:

I think, just, you know, check out their new album if you haven't already.

Tammy:

it's.

Tammy:

You can see every song and read every lyric on YouTube.

Tammy:

you can order the album.

Tammy:

They put out a white album, which is really cool.

Tammy:

so yeah, I would say check it out, grab some tissue and, yeah, and,

Tammy:

you know, just, just let it flow.

Tammy:

It's, it's great.

Tammy:

It's, it's a great, like I said, said it a few times already.

Tammy:

It's a, it's a great masterpiece, but, Also it's you know, it's,

Tammy:

I guess it's a turning point.

Tammy:

So I, it'll just, it'll be, you know, this is a, this is a, a interesting

Tammy:

period of time now for the next few years.

Tammy:

I, it's hard to think about the future of the band at this point cuz it's

Tammy:

just so, I, I don't, I wanna honor the grief process for everyone, but

Tammy:

at the same time, you know, in a year or two it will be interesting to see,

Tammy:

how they continue to carry on and, and, and where they go from here.

Tammy:

and the fans will be right along with them.

Tammy:

So we'll all, we'll all

Kimberly:

go together, we'll all go together.

Kimberly:

And, you know, I really wanted to just extend my appreciation for you coming

Kimberly:

on the show and talking about such a, I know it's a painful experience and I

Kimberly:

know a lot of fans feel the same way.

Kimberly:

It's life.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

It's life.

Kimberly:

Yeah.

Kimberly:

I'm,

Tammy:

I'm glad to talk about it because.

Tammy:

I think it's important to connect to other people and, and to share these experiences

Tammy:

and especially, especially grief, you know, like you have, well, for me, I

Tammy:

have to talk about it and, and share it.

Tammy:

Those are, and especially, you know, for, there's a lot of men

Tammy:

that are Foo Fighters fans, a large fan base of, of theirs is, is men.

Tammy:

And men aren't always taught to share emotion and share feelings and.

Tammy:

I think Dave being very vulnerable and emotional is a great role model as well.

Tammy:

Cause you don't wanna bottle that stuff up.

Tammy:

It's not healthy.

Tammy:

So even if you wanna listen to the album and cry by yourself, that's okay too.

Tammy:

Just mm-hmm.

Tammy:

It's, it's okay to feel emotion, like mm-hmm.

Tammy:

It's all right.

Tammy:

You know?

Tammy:

Mm-hmm.

Kimberly:

Most definitely.

Kimberly:

Which is we're human.

Kimberly:

And if you wanna lighten it up, grab some barbecue.

Kimberly:

So the fact that he barbecues, cuz I love to barbecue.

Kimberly:

I'm like, you got extra points in my book, Dave Grove for that.

Kimberly:

So, yeah,

Tammy:

he's got a whole big, huge smoker and I think he has a, I

Tammy:

think he named his company Backbeat Barbecue or something, so, any, yeah.

Tammy:

Oh yeah.

Tammy:

Love it.

Tammy:

Pretty cool.

Kimberly:

Pretty cool.

Kimberly:

And for any Foo Fighters fans that, wanna share your experience with, all

Kimberly:

the goings on, please leave a comment and we'd, we'd love to hear from you,

Kimberly:

cuz I know it's just, I believe that sharing those things really help people

Kimberly:

to move forward and, also gives people an understanding that you're not alone.

Kimberly:

You're not the only one that's feeling sad about it or happy or

Kimberly:

whatever you're feeling, right?

Kimberly:

Yep.

Kimberly:

Yep.

Tammy:

Let us know in the comments, please.

Tammy:

Awesome.

Kimberly:

Well, thank you so much for joining us for this special

Kimberly:

conversation about Foo fighters.

Kimberly:

So happy to see them back out there.

Kimberly:

I can't wait for Tammy to tell us about her, concert

Kimberly:

experience whenever it happens.

Kimberly:

I know it's happening.

Kimberly:

I'll put that out there.

Kimberly:

Thank you.

Kimberly:

And we, we will see you next time before I forget.

Kimberly:

Be kind and rock on and we'll see you soon.

Tammy:

Woo-hoo.

Tammy:

Bye-bye.
