Shownotes

In this episode of Joy Moments, we welcome Joe (Lacey's husband) to the podcast for the first time. We dive into a candid conversation about finding daily moments of appreciation, the differences in how we experience and express positive emotions, and the various ways families create meaningful rituals.

Joe shares his memorable experience of hearing his five-month-old daughter Violet say "dada" for the first time – a distinct moment that stood out from her usual baby chatter. Meanwhile, Lacey recounts a precious morning when her first-grader read books to his baby sister before school, and Sara delights in discovering beehives named "BS in the D" during her weekend trip to Detroit.

We also explore the lighter side of family life, including Joe's impressive cereal collection (featuring Reese's Puffs, Honey Bunches of Oats, Grape Nuts, Cheerios, Frosted Mini Wheats, Lucky Charms, Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Protein Cheerios, Fruit Loops, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch), our debate on the proper way to enjoy cereal milk, and why roller skating feels impossible even for someone with Joe's natural athletic abilities.

This conversation reveals how joy manifests differently for everyone – whether through "cool things that happened," shared family rituals like high/low dinner table discussions, or simple everyday moments that bring unexpected delight.

Submit your own joy moments to be shared on future episodes!

Lacey:

Welcome to Joy Moments, where a moment shared spread ripples of joy.

2

:

I'm Lacey your

3

:

co-host who's not alone today, but we'll

address that in a second here with Sarah.

4

:

Hi Sarah.

5

:

Sara: Hi Lacey

6

:

Lacey: I invited my husband, Joe today.

7

:

Joe's been on no shame in the home

game and sharing the middle, so he

8

:

had to hit, joy moments as well.

9

:

So welcome to Joy Moments, Joe.

10

:

Joe: Thanks for having me.

11

:

Lacey: we'll just say Lacey and

Joe are set up in a very precarious

12

:

way, to be able to record both

of us and, we're making it work.

13

:

Joe: I do what I can.

14

:

Lacey: This is just to make Sarah

happy 'cause I knew it would make Sarah

15

:

Sara: I was gonna say, I've gone

straight to Giggle Town and I'm

16

:

actually like covering my mouth and

tempted to mute myself because I am,

17

:

I'm a big Joe fan and so, sorry Joe,

I don't wanna make you uncomfortable.

18

:

I know fan girl makes you uncomfortable.

19

:

Lacey: Are you not gonna respond to that?

20

:

Joe: What do you want me to say to that?

21

:

Lacey: I don't know.

22

:

joy moments.

23

:

We share, moments of joy, real

moments of joy, so hopefully they can

24

:

provide joy to others in the world.

25

:

I invited Joe to share a joy today.

26

:

and I'll be honest, Joe was reluctant.

27

:

'cause at first he said,

I don't have any to share.

28

:

And then I listed several to which

he said, those feel too personal,

29

:

which I think, is a very interesting,

thing of, and just showing how

30

:

different old bro and I are.

31

:

Joe: Yep.

32

:

Sara: I think, you know what though,

I love this because we talk about

33

:

like, even just the word joy for

some people isn't the right word.

34

:

thankfulness, gratitude, a

moment of something I enjoyed.

35

:

So it's very personal, right?

36

:

And when what?

37

:

What feels like you want to share

and even what you wanna call it.

38

:

So it could be something

that made you laugh today.

39

:

It could be something that.

40

:

Delighted your taste buds.

41

:

I don't know, like, it doesn't

even have to be anything that

42

:

personal, , so I think this is great.

43

:

it's forcing us to look at this

from many different angles.

44

:

Lacey: I make Joe do

this every day already.

45

:

at our dinner table, everyone is required

to share a high from their day and a low.

46

:

They don't have to have a low, but

you always have to have a high 'cause

47

:

There's always something we can

find in our lives I'm used to making

48

:

Joe find things to be happy about,

49

:

Joe: Even when you're not at dinner with

us, for whatever reason, I still, we all

50

:

still do it, so not forcing me to do it.

51

:

Lacey: I, it started with

me forcing everyone to

52

:

Joe: do it,

53

:

Lacey: and now it's part of our

routine, they, can't have dessert until

54

:

everybody goes, so everyone's real

motivated to get it done at times.

55

:

So nothing like forcing, gratitude

and positive thinking on people.

56

:

Sara: So wait, are you promising

me and Joe Dessert after this?

57

:

Lacey: no.

58

:

Sara: Okay.

59

:

Lacey: you can have dessert.

60

:

We've got some ice cream bars

downstairs if he wants one.

61

:

We have cookies.

62

:

Did you buy that for the cookie dough?

63

:

You bought?

64

:

Cookie dough.

65

:

Oh, is that just for me

to eat or it's just, yeah.

66

:

Okay.

67

:

Joe: It was on sale,

68

:

Lacey: Joe loves a flash sale.

69

:

It was not

70

:

Joe: a flash sale.

71

:

Lacey: we use Kroger delivery sometimes

they have these things called flash

72

:

sales, which is essentially the equivalent

of walking into the aisle to do a

73

:

checkout like temp you to buy stuff

someone is very susceptible to, bro, if

74

:

Joe: I can get.

75

:

if I can get something that I

know you're gonna like, and it's

76

:

a dollar, why wouldn't I get it

77

:

Lacey: sometimes there's 12

donuts who's gonna eat all

78

:

these donuts and they get eaten?

79

:

So you got really excited about something.

80

:

Sara: Oh, Joe saying, who wouldn't

buy an endive on a flash sale?

81

:

That's just like my new favorite

sentence that ever I never knew

82

:

was ever gonna exist in my life.

83

:

And now it does.

84

:

And now I never wanna forget it.

85

:

And I don't even know

what an endive looks like.

86

:

I don't know what I would do with

an endive, but it doesn't matter.

87

:

I love the sentence.

88

:

Lacey: So it was Belgian

and Dive and we got it.

89

:

We used to do Blue Apron when it was just

us before we had kids, and it actually

90

:

was a really good solution for us.

91

:

And it taught us how to

cook very, pretty much too.

92

:

So we're very comfortable

cooking because of it.

93

:

Joe: of cooking techniques.

94

:

Lacey: Yeah.

95

:

one of the things that we got, that they

had us make several times was an endive

96

:

salad with just like a vinegarette.

97

:

And I always really enjoyed it So

it's yeah, if there's an endive

98

:

shoved in my face, let's do it.

99

:

sounded a little bit different than

I wanted it to, but that's fine.

100

:

We're gonna keep moving.

101

:

Joe: No comment.

102

:

Lacey: do you want share your joy first

or do you want one of us to go first?

103

:

Joe: I think somebody

else should go first.

104

:

Okay.

105

:

Lacey: Sarah, do you have one

or would you like me to go.

106

:

Sara: I have one

107

:

so this past weekend, there are

so many joys within this, but

108

:

I'm really gonna focus in on one

because this is not the Sarah show.

109

:

I was lucky enough to go to Detroit

with my sister this past weekend.

110

:

First of all, Detroit.

111

:

Can't say enough lovely things about it.

112

:

what I'm gonna focus on is I was

walking around the hotel we stayed

113

:

in, it was a refurnished refurbished.

114

:

1920s firehouse.

115

:

So it was really every

turn was a discovery.

116

:

So I was walking around with my coffee,

just looking at things and in the

117

:

interior, so it, there was an empty

above the first floor, so there was

118

:

like a platform, but all the windows

looked into this rectangular open space.

119

:

There was beehives, but the part that made

me happy was that the name of the beehive.

120

:

It was called BS in the D, and

I just thought that BS in the D.

121

:

Lacey: Okay.

122

:

Sara: until I saw your face,

I hadn't even taken it there.

123

:

I just thought it was so cute.

124

:

And then later that day, we were walking

along the riverfront and there was

125

:

lavender in this like raised bush and

all the little honeybees were there.

126

:

And I.

127

:

Lacey: Sarah, being excited and

talking to bees is very Sarah.

128

:

Sara: As you know, I do

129

:

Lacey: I would go with some

kind of variation of bees knees.

130

:

Like how do, is that?

131

:

Yeah.

132

:

I don't know.

133

:

We're not gonna workshop b names.

134

:

We're gonna workshop B names.

135

:

Sara: B's in the D.

136

:

Lacey: name in the dating.

137

:

Sara: Oh my gosh.

138

:

Lacey: I've heard lovely things about

Detroit and all the things going on there,

139

:

Sara: Shout out Detroit.

140

:

I highly recommend it.

141

:

this episode is brought to you

by the Detroit Tourism Bureau.

142

:

if only I could say

the word Bureau Bureau.

143

:

Lacey: Office of tourism.

144

:

Sara: of tourism.

145

:

Thank you, Lacey.

146

:

Do you have a joy moment to share?

147

:

Lacey: I do.

148

:

we have been getting into

our new school time routine.

149

:

Isaac is now, a first grader,

so he's going to school all day,

150

:

which we all love, it means that.

151

:

Invite We, me, but it means that we

wake up and we get him on the bus

152

:

in the morning instead of having

a lot of time in the morning.

153

:

And this morning we got done

getting everything ready early.

154

:

He did a great job and he's

been loving, carrying Violet

155

:

around and it's very cute, but.

156

:

I tried to channel that energy this

morning into him reading her books.

157

:

So I set her up in the Boppy so she

could sit up and he wanted to read

158

:

her a Minecraft book, to which I,

was like, maybe let's pick something

159

:

else that she's a little interested.

160

:

And he was like, here's mine.

161

:

gonna start with this book

Homeboy read her four books.

162

:

Read four books, and he is just in

there having the time of her life

163

:

and she thinks he is the bee's knees.

164

:

And they just had this lovely time

and I just sat in the kitchen,

165

:

left them bee, ate some cereal, and

it was just really lovely moment.

166

:

I think in general, one of my favorite

things in the world right now is

167

:

seeing my children things that I know.

168

:

I would say come from me, but like

that, that I know I say out loud and

169

:

the things that I do, and this was one

of those things I, as he was reading,

170

:

I was hear him, hearing him use some

of the different phrasing and things

171

:

that we do and it was just very sweet.

172

:

And I got to enjoy my cereal by myself,

173

:

Sara: I'm so curious.

174

:

What kind of cereal does Lacey eat?

175

:

Lacey: really only two at the moment.

176

:

Honey Bunches, boats Reese Puffs.

177

:

That's it.

178

:

there is a cereal connoisseur in

our household, and it's not me.

179

:

Joe: I have no idea what you're talking

180

:

Lacey: about somebody who

has a cereal buying problem.

181

:

Joe: It's not a problem

182

:

Lacey: because cereal

just continues to show up

183

:

Joe: It's not an addiction.

184

:

Lacey: And so it's so interesting

that the two that I'll eat, those

185

:

get eaten pretty regularly, but

just more cereal keeps showing up.

186

:

Joe: I have no idea what

you're talking about.

187

:

Lacey: a third cereal that I would love

to eat now, and that's crackling oat

188

:

bread, which you would think not good.

189

:

It is the best cereal in the world,

but it's too, it's just too expensive.

190

:

It's too expensive for

that tiny little box.

191

:

Yeah.

192

:

Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs

is the one that I always want.

193

:

But for some reason, honey bunches of

boats makes me feel more like an adult

194

:

Sara: Yeah, it's the word bunches

that really makes it grown up.

195

:

If Joe doesn't wanna share

a moment of joy, I would.

196

:

I would happily listen to all

the cereals, like, list all the

197

:

cereals in your house right now.

198

:

Joe: I can do that and

share a moment of joy.

199

:

obviously as we have Reese

Puffs and Honey Bunches of Oats.

200

:

we have grape nuts, which are

a favorite of mine, Cheerios,

201

:

which are my other favorite.

202

:

frosted shredded mini wheats,

203

:

Lacey: it?

204

:

There's strawberry, frosted, minted.

205

:

Joe: they're strawberry.

206

:

Yeah.

207

:

there's a lucky charms, right?

208

:

For kids.

209

:

yeah.

210

:

Lucky charms, course.

211

:

that's not for me, honestly.

212

:

That, and then Chex, but both

rice checks and corn checks.

213

:

Lacey: Yeah.

214

:

So multiple boxes of checks.

215

:

Well

216

:

Joe: now wait a second.

217

:

I buy it when they have

the family size on sale.

218

:

So that you can get two for the same

price as what one box normally is.

219

:

Lacey: So we have to store bigger boxes.

220

:

We do for longer.

221

:

We do.

222

:

Joe: Is there any out on the counter?

223

:

Lacey: anymore.

224

:

Sara: Wait, is that the end of the list?

225

:

Joe: Yes.

226

:

Sara: not.

227

:

Joe: no.

228

:

hold on.

229

:

There's also some protein cheerios,

and like a off-brand Fruit Loops.

230

:

Lacey: there's Cinnamon

Toast Crunch somewhere.

231

:

Joe: No there's not.

232

:

Lacey: Yeah, there is.

233

:

It's in the pantry cabinet.

234

:

Oh, tiny.

235

:

There's multiple ones in the, there's

a tiny, there's that, and then

236

:

there's something else in there too

that's the other two Fruit loops.

237

:

Joe: That's the off-brand Fruit Loops.

238

:

And the protein Cheerios are the

three that are in that little spot.

239

:

Sara: Follow up question.

240

:

Do you ever mix two or more

types of cereal together?

241

:

Joe: Sometimes.

242

:

Sara: Can I hear your

favorite combination?

243

:

Joe: probably Reese Puff's

and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

244

:

Sara: Nice.

245

:

Okay.

246

:

That was one of my favorite things in

college when they had the dispensers,

247

:

was to mix and match different

kinds and then like, as it like

248

:

gets more soggy and then it changes.

249

:

So yeah, that's like a, gosh, we could

do a spinoff podcast about cereal.

250

:

Lacey: I am not a cereal person.

251

:

I've always liked Reese Puffs, like

I'm so much that I'm not a cereal.

252

:

person, that I didn't know that

Cheerios and a Honey Nut Cheerios

253

:

were two different things.

254

:

I thought they were the same thing.

255

:

And when I told Joe that, he was like,

I'm sorry, what is wrong with you?

256

:

So if that tells you.

257

:

How not of a cereal person.

258

:

I am.

259

:

Yeah.

260

:

I also don't like drinking

the milk afterwards.

261

:

What he thinks is sacrilegious.

262

:

So I've gotten really good

at not using very milk.

263

:

Joe: don't have,

264

:

Sara: I'm with Joe on that one.

265

:

I grew up in a family where if you didn't

drink your milk with your cereal in the

266

:

morning, it would be poured in a glass

and that would be your milk at dinner.

267

:

So we just learned to

drink it with our cereal.

268

:

Lacey: That would've taken way too

much thought process for my family.

269

:

all right, Joe, you have a

joy moment you wanna share?

270

:

Joe: I Do Lace and I were talking in

the office while Violet was in little

271

:

Lacey: jumpy thing.

272

:

Joe: It's a little jumpy, but it's.

273

:

You know the

274

:

Lacey: activity center?

275

:

Joe: Yeah.

276

:

Where there, she's in her seat and

there's toys in a circle around her

277

:

and she can rotate and bounce a little.

278

:

I don't even, and it holds her up.

279

:

Yeah.

280

:

You, anyone who has kids knows

what we're talking about, but I

281

:

couldn't tell you the name of it.

282

:

Anyway, she's sitting in that

and Lace and I are talking, and

283

:

Violet, who is very chatty, just

284

:

Lacey: contributing.

285

:

Violet likes to, she's been on the

podcast letting her voice be heard,

286

:

Joe: but I think at this specific

instance, we have to be very clear

287

:

that she was not saying words.

288

:

She was more like, yeah, she's making

almost like singing, but not singing.

289

:

Almost like yelling, but not yelling.

290

:

It's she has this way of

communicating by just like making

291

:

a noise or like a level of noise.

292

:

And in the middle of that,

she stopped clearly, looked me

293

:

in the face and said, dadda.

294

:

And then went right back

to the kind of like, why?

295

:

And I'm like, this girl

is five months old.

296

:

What is she doing?

297

:

Lacey: we both,

298

:

Joe: we did the, we both looked at

each other and we literally both

299

:

just, we stopped, stared at each

other and we're like, did she just.

300

:

Did No, did she really?

301

:

And it, there was a very clear

distinction between when she was making

302

:

the noise to when she said that, to

when she went back to making the noise.

303

:

And it was completely distinct

from what she was doing.

304

:

So it was, it, I There's no

other, it's not like she was

305

:

saying like, blah, blah, blah.

306

:

Nothing like that.

307

:

No, it was, yeah.

308

:

Lacey: So that

309

:

Joe: was,

310

:

Lacey: Joe's been running that high

311

:

Joe: a little bit.

312

:

Yeah, little bit.

313

:

Lacey: there's been a few

other moments since too.

314

:

Joe: she did it again today.

315

:

Lacey: And the thing is, we both

stop and look at each other.

316

:

So it's not just in

either one of our heads.

317

:

Joe: Yes.

318

:

So that to me is that's all it took.

319

:

Yeah.

320

:

So think we know, I think we

know who's the daddy's girl now.

321

:

Lacey: Okay.

322

:

Joe: I think I can hear her.

323

:

Lacey: She's y'all are talking about me.

324

:

Joe: I think that was good enough.

325

:

Lacey: Yeah, that was great.

326

:

Joe: Yeah.

327

:

Lacey: Yeah.

328

:

Sara: Would you call Joy moment

something else from a dude's perspective?

329

:

Joe: I probably, because when you

said like moment of joy, I was like,

330

:

I don't have joy, so I don't know

what I would call it, but for me

331

:

personally, joy would not be right.

332

:

Sara: cool things that happened to Joe.

333

:

Lacey: I don't have joy.

334

:

Sara: I know that's,

it's a branding thing.

335

:

We gotta work on it.

336

:

Joe: certainly feel free to move forward

with that, but I'm just saying from my

337

:

perspective, if you were to say, Hey.

338

:

What was a moment of joy that you had?

339

:

And I'm like, I don't know.

340

:

When was the last time I

was on a slide as a kid?

341

:

That to me is more like joy as opposed to

342

:

Lacey: Yeah.

343

:

Joe: Does that make sense?

344

:

Lacey: At any, they went

roller skating this weekend.

345

:

Did at a roller rink.

346

:

Did, yeah.

347

:

At any point in there, did you have joy?

348

:

Joe: No.

349

:

'cause my feet hurt.

350

:

I don't like, I, I'm not, okay, so

this, I can ski, I can water ski.

351

:

I can ice skate.

352

:

I can roller blade for the life of me.

353

:

I cannot roller skate.

354

:

I don't know what the difference is.

355

:

There's something about.

356

:

I walking on little mini cars.

357

:

I guess I, I don't know it, first of all,

they hurt my feet 'cause they're just like

358

:

flat metal boards in the bottom of them.

359

:

And I cannot control

myself when I'm on 'em.

360

:

I'm way super wobbly, so put me on a pair

of roller blades and I'll, skate around,

361

:

skate backwards, all that kinda stuff.

362

:

Not a problem.

363

:

But do roller skates.

364

:

Lacey: He actually, I've been skiing

once in my life and I went with him

365

:

I had a panic attack on the bunny

hill and then never touched my skis

366

:

again as the story for another day.

367

:

But then he was like, do you

mind if I go do this one?

368

:

And I'm like, that's fine.

369

:

So I'm sitting at the bottom

and Joe was like, really good.

370

:

I'm like, I am.

371

:

Extremely attracted to you right now.

372

:

I did not know that was there, but,

so yeah, Joe has a lot of natural

373

:

athleticism I don't necessarily

think he gets credit for, but put

374

:

'em on rolling, mini rolling cars.

375

:

Well, those are our joy moments for today.

376

:

As always, you can share your joy

moments with us by submitting them on our

377

:

378

:

moments, so we can share yours,

whether it's joy or happiness, or

379

:

whatever word Joe would approve of.

380

:

Sara: It is always good to see you, Lacey.

381

:

Lacey: Thank you,

382

:

Sara: Thank you, Lacey.
