Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore launches his new podcast series, “In Charity and Truth,” building on the themes he wrote about in his February 2026 pastoral letter, “In Charity and Truth: Toward a Renewed Political Culture.”

In this first episode of “In Charity and Truth,” Archbishop Lori interviews Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop emeritus of New York, on the theme of Catholics and the American story.

Cardinal Dolan argues that history is essential – not merely as a record of the past, but as a living source of wisdom and spiritual insight. He traces the Catholic presence in America from the Spanish and French missions through founding-era figures such as Bishop John Carroll and Cardinal James Gibbons, who demonstrated that Catholic faith and American patriotism are deeply compatible, not in conflict.

The conversation turns to immigration, with both men affirming that the Church's identity is inseparable from its immigrant heritage, while calling for a measured and humane approach to current immigration debates. They discuss how bishops can model the civility and charitable dialogue that civic life so desperately needs, drawing on the concept of synodality as a framework applicable beyond the Church.

Looking toward America's 250th anniversary, Cardinal Dolan urges Catholics to recover their history, deepen their spiritual identity, and recommit to the conviction that human dignity flows from God – not from government. Both men close with a call for prayer, love and courageous witness in public life.
