Considering Prayer: A Reflection on the Power of Prayer

Key Text: James 5:14–18

Prayer is a word we use often, but do we truly understand its power?

In this episode of Excel & Reflect, we take a thoughtful look at James 5:14–18 and reflect on what Scripture teaches about the power of prayer. Prayer is not simply a religious habit, positive thinking, or routine words spoken into the air. It is direct access to the God who created the world, parted seas, and raised Jesus from the grave. When we pray, we are speaking to the One who holds all things together.

Throughout Scripture, we see powerful reminders of what happens when God’s people pray. Elijah prayed and the heavens withheld rain. Hezekiah prayed and God delivered His people. The early church prayed and prison doors opened. These were not coincidences—they were divine responses to faithful prayer. The power was never in the individual praying, but in the God who heard their prayers.

This episode also explores the prayer life of Jesus and why prayer was essential to His mission. Before major decisions, in moments of pressure, and even in suffering, Jesus prayed. In the garden, His prayer was so intense that His sweat became like drops of blood, reminding us that prayer is sometimes not only powerful, but painful. Prayer often flows from burden, struggle, and deep dependence on God, yet it remains one of the greatest privileges believers possess.

James reminds us that “the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much,” pointing to Elijah as an example. The focus is not on human strength, but on divine power. God listens, Christ intercedes, and the Holy Spirit helps in our weakness. When we pray, heaven is fully engaged.

In this episode, we reflect on why prayer matters, why the early church was devoted to it, and why believers today must never neglect this incredible gift. Prayer allows us to bring our fears, burdens, gratitude, and requests directly to God’s throne, trusting that He hears and responds according to His will.

In This Episode:

  • The true power behind prayer (James 5:14–18)
  • Biblical examples of God responding to prayer
  • The prayer life of Jesus and why it matters
  • Why prayer can be both powerful and painful
  • The role of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in our prayers
  • Why Christians must remain devoted to prayer

Key Takeaway:

Prayer is powerful not because of who we are, but because of who He is.
