Every good story needs context. Thirty-eight years after a carnivorous, infectious plant called Rampage destroys earth, humans are in diaspora. Grizz Cortez, having a mysterious connection to the origin of Rampage, is the only human to survive an infection. She lives a solitary life on her ship, the Lolita Lebrón, managing her unique disability and evading detection by the Rampage Ministry.
To understand Grizz's story, you need to understand how Rampage came to be. You need to understand what things were like when the world ended.

Season 1, Episode 1
“When the World Ended”
SCENE ONE: The ESMV Somerville: 10 minutes to destruction.
1. (SOUND) muffled Klaxons blaring
2. ZELDA: [muffled. Pained, out of breath, as she’s trying to type while mortally wounded]
3. (SOUND) Typing
4. (MUSIC) Tense, building strings. Suspenseful, melancholic, ominous. Should continue until scene end.
5. GRIZZ: I’ve tried to start these recordings a million times. I think I’ve figured out the problem. Good stories need context- be that cultural or historical. In the unfortunate event that I’ve gotta use these recordings for their intended purpose, I know I won’t find them as useful, divorced from their context.
6. (SOUND) Muffled sound of switches being flipped and some mechanical keyboard typing
7. GRIZZ: To accomplish this, I have to start with someone else’s recordings. I have to go back- go back about 38 years- go back to when the world ended.
8. (SOUND) Klaxons are no longer muffled
9. (SOUND) Zelda slaps a button
10. ZELDA: [pained, not all with it, frantic, panicked] Spacedock, do you read? This is Captain Zelda Cortez, of the Earth Science Ministry vessel, the Somerville.
There is something on my ship- a- a- a plant we brought onboard. It- [voice breaking] It’s something more than a plant. It- it’s infected me with- something.
This can’t reach earth. [voice breaking] I can’t reach earth. [hacking cough] The self destruct will be going off in about a minute. I’ve launched a communications beacon with the recordings from the Somerville, so you know what happened. Do NOT take the beacon aboard your ship. Download the information, and destroy it.
Do NOT try to recover any part of the Somerville. [starting to cry] Every- Everyone else is dead. They’ve been torn to pieces. Shredded. It’s not just a plant- it has- intelligence. Please- I can’t save myself, but- maybe I can save earth- save it from this thing’s rampage.

SCENE TWO: ESMV Sommerville: 36 hours before destruction
1. (SOUND) well functioning spaceship ambience
2. (SOUND) Some boots casually walking down a spaceship hallway
3. (SOUND) Some sounds of putting clothing on, and clipping things, as a few scientists put on EV suits for going down to the surface
4. GRIZZ: What we now come to know and fear as The Rampage Ministry used to be the earth’s Ministry of Science. After the oligarchs of the 21st century were slaughtered in the proletariat uprising, the global Ministry of Science was born- a unified human front, to reverse the damage that capitalism had wrought on our little blue marble.
This was working beautifully, until we figured out superluminal space travel. Shortly after we began to explore space, we made contact with alien life.
In each one of us are the seeds of what our ancestors planted. If we don’t work on digging out the bad seeds before they take root, we’re doomed to grow the same rotten fruit as those that came before us.
Humans may have believed that we cured our xenophobia by removing trivialities like our borders- but the existential fear of life beyond our planet- and the refusal to dig out the fetid roots of colonialism in our hearts- allowed hate to grow. The scientifically minded were not exempt from this.
Even before the plant now known as “Rampage” was brought to earth, the Ministry of Science had a simple mission- ensure the future of the human race, above all else.
5. (SOUND) Static
6. ZELDA: Okay, everyone got the helmet cameras on?
7. (SOUND) Switch
8. MEECHUM: I do now.
9. BIRCH: Already did.
10. ZELDA: Good. I don’t need them jumping up my ass about us not having video of a mission again.
11. MEECHUM: I forgot once!
12. BIRCH: Once- this mission. Remember last time we went out?
13. ZELDA: They reamed my ass, for you not having video.
14. (SOUND) Meechum, Birch, and Zelda are still getting dressed in their EV suits
15. BIRCH: Aw, man. I never get my ass reamed.
16. ZELDA: Become a captain, and you’ll feel like it’s happening every day.
17. MEECHUM: You forget shit all the time!
18. ZELDA: Yes, but I accommodate for my ADHD’s unreliable memory. I have systems. My systems, have systems. You see this?
19. (SOUND) Zelda raises her hand
20. MEECHUM: You wrote “Turn on your camera, bitch” on your hand.
21. ZELDA: Sys-tems!
22. MEECHUM: That’s hardly a system?
23. ZELDA: We all turned our cameras on, didn’t we?
24. BIRCH: That’s also why she keeps top secret passwords written in that tiny notebook she keeps in her desk.
25. ZELDA: I- You- How did-
26. MEECHUM: We see you reference it every time you have to enter a password.
27. ZELDA: There are so many passwords! There are separate passwords for every system, and I have to change them every 3 months. I don’t want to be on comms with a Ministry base every other week, because I’ve forgotten one.
28. MEECHUM: Birch, you better hope you didn’t get her in trouble for talking about her notebook while we’re recording.
29. ZELDA: It’s whatever. I’m not gonna be on the ship much longer anyway. It’s not like they’re gonna be able to fire me.
30. BIRCH: You’re about to be a mommy!
31. MEECHUM: How’s the missus, boss?
32. ZELDA: She’s doing okay. She’s nervous as hell. I think she’s feeling some guilt about not being able to carry the baby herself, which is silly. Thanks to my job, I couldn’t either.
33. BIRCH: The Ministry paid for your surrogate though, right?
34. ZELDA: Ehhh- depends on what you mean by “paid”. In exchange for creating an embryo from both her and my eggs, The Ministry extended my contract three years. When it became clear we needed a surrogate, they added another two years to that original agreement. But- Those 5 years are over next week, and I get to be home with my wife, and our new baby.
35. BIRCH: The “egg thing”- that still a proprietary Science Ministry procedure?
36. ZELDA: Yep. It’s the only way we could have had a baby that was genetically related to us both. My kid’s gonna be more than worth it.
37. MEECHUM: Absolute bullshit you have to be ministry to get that done.
38. BIRCH: It’s extortion.
39. ZELDA: [clears throat] I’d watch what you say. I may be retiring, but you’re not- and we’re currently being recorded for Ministry records.
40. BIRCH: Whatever. I’ll say it directly to camera. [looks at camera on Zelda, speaking to whomever watches] Hey-
41. (SOUND) Birch taps the camera
42. BIRCH: Having proprietary medical procedures is unethical. Making people work for you to access those procedures is akin to indentured servitude. I can only speak for myself, but any scientific research I do is for the betterment of everyone.
People who don’t work for the Ministry deserve every medical advancement we make. This shit shouldn’t be exclusively for those with intellectual capacity to get multiple doctorates, and the physical capabilities to pass the Ministry’s ludicrous athletic requirements.
43. ZELDA: For any ministry personnel who may be watching this later, that was Dr. Alex Birch.
44. MEECHUM: [chuckles] Yes. Their opinions are their own.
45. BIRCH: Whatever. They know how I feel already.
46. MEECHUM: What’s she been up to, while you’ve been deployed?
47. ZELDA: She’s spending so much time with the surrogate we found, I’m afraid she’s going to have moved her in, by the time I get back to Texas.
48. MEECHUM: Why’d she doing that? Is it anxiety about the baby? How far along is she?
49. BIRCH: [chuckles] She trying to get a second wife? I don’t think that’s legal in Texas yet.
50. ZELDA: [chuckles] Nah, I think Meechum’s a little closer as to her motivation. She’s got a month left. Hope- that’s our surrogate- she’s only 25.
51. BIRCH: She’s trading you in for a younger model!
52. ZELDA: [laughs] No, her concern feels sisterly. Hope is a sweetheart. She wants to apply for the ministry, once she has our baby. She’s been using the money from being a surrogate to focus fully on her entry dissertation.
53. BIRCH: What’s her dissertation about?
54. ZELDA: Uhh…I forget the exact title, but it’s something about the transference of human consciousness into a digital medium.
55. MEECHUM: The Ministry does not like research about putting human brains into computers.
56. ZELDA: I know, but she says she’s figured out how to do it. I’ll just be excited when we’re done here, and I can get back home for good.
57. MEECHUM: You really retiring after this?
58. ZELDA: “Retiring”- not quite. I’m quitting the Ministry. I’ll be at the end of my contract. I’m gonna have other work.
59. BIRCH: What are you gonna go instead?
60. ZELDA: Paloma and I are gonna start a farm.
61. MEECHUM: [laughs]
62. ZELDA: Why are you laughing?
63. BIRCH: That’s not a joke?
64. ZELDA: Nope.
65. MEECHUM: Holy shit.
66. ZELDA: We aren’t starting it from scratch, and it’s not gonna be big. We inherited a small plot of land in Longview, when Paloma’s dad died.
67. BIRCH: Longview?
68. ZELDA: East Texas, where Paloma’s is from.
69. MEECHUM: And you are gonna live on a farm, and do farmer stuff?
70. ZELDA: I’m a botanist! Why is that so hard to believe?
71. BIRCH: Because, as far as we’ve seen, you only know how to grow plants in a climate controlled lab.
72. MEECHUM: Are you gonna build a house with your own hands and dig a well? How “off-grid” are we talking.
73. ZELDA: [snorts] Longview is not “off-grid” in the slightest. It’s a city. There’s already a modest house on the property. We’re gonna live there, and fix the place up. Paloma’s dad also left her his ship. I don’t know that we’ll get much use out of the old thing. I don’t want my kid growing up on a ship, like I did.
74. BIRCH: I’m jealous.
75. ZELDA: You can do the same thing.
76. BIRCH: I need to get a loving partner, first.
77. ZELDA: I think we need to cut the yapping and get to packing. These soil, water, and plant samples won’t collect themselves.
78. MEECHUM: Well, Birch- maybe you’ll find something you wanna marry down on this planet.
79. (SOUND) Zelda stands up
80. (SOUND) Zelda starts typing
81. BIRCH: [laughs] What’s it look like down there, Captain?
82. (SOUND) Some beeps as Zelda is looking at the readout
83. (SOUND) A couple of switches
84. ZELDA: I don’t think you’re gonna be making a love connection.
85. BIRCH: How come?
86. ZELDA: I’m not reading any life besides plant life. [beat] That’s so fucking weird. You wanna smooch a bush?
87. (PAUSE)
88. BIRCH: [snorts laughing]
89. ZELDA: I only heard what I said after I’d already said it.
90. MEECHUM: There’s really no animal life down there at all?
91. ZELDA: No. Maybe some single celled organisms, but nothing large enough for our scanners to pick up.
92. MEECHUM: Did the Ministry give you a dossier on this one?
93. ZELDA: Yeah, but it’s pretty bare bones. It just said that a Ministry ship scanned this planet while on route to Science Base 37b, and we are to collect soil, water, and plant samples.
94. BIRCH: Ah, sounds like they’re contemplating it for a colony.
95. ZELDA: Welp- Glad I’m retiring, and they can’t make me settle down here.
96. MEECHUM: Why?
97. ZELDA: It’s currently -28 degrees Celsius, where we’re supposed to land.
98. BIRCH: God damn.
99. MEECHUM: What kind of plant samples do they expect you to collect in that kind of cold?
100. ZELDA: It looks like there’s a plant they caught on their scanners from orbit, that seems to thrive in subzero temps. They probably want me to grab samples so we can genetically modify some crops to be ultra cold-tolerant.
101. BIRCH: So we have to collect 50 plus water and soil samples a piece, and you-
102. ZELDA: I’m collecting a single plant. Several specimens of a single plant- but still, just the one plant.
103. MEECHUM: Not fair.
104. ZELDA: Captain’s privilege! Everyone ready to head out?
105. MEECHUM: Aye, Aye.
106. BIRCH: Yes, ma’am.
107. ZELDA: Let’s motor.
108. (SOUND) Closing of an airlock door
109. (SOUND) Meechum, Birch, and Zelda sit down in their respective chairs
110. (SOUND) All three start putting on seatbelts. Should be big and bulky sounding
111. (SOUND) Spaceship engine turning on and gearing up
112. (SOUND) A few clicks and some typing, as she starts the mission log
113. ZELDA: Mission Log- This is Captain Zelda Cortez, Commander BJ Meechum, and Lieutenant Kenji Birch. We are heading down to the planet designated as Hestia 9. We’re in shuttlecraft B.
114. (SOUND) Spaceship unhooking from a docking station
115. (SOUND) Spaceship taking off
116. ZELDA: Weather assessment shows the continent in the north- where we will be landing- current has a high temperate of -28. Clear skies, low wind, and low humidity. Entering the atmosphere shorty.
117. (SOUND) Background sounds get quieter, as Grizz talks
118. (SOUND) Spaceship entering atmosphere
119. GRIZZ: I wish I had more context. All I have to work off of are the recordings from the Somerville- and I only have those, because I stole them. It’s fine. I’m a thief. It’s my job.
120. (SOUND) Spaceship zipping towards the ground
121. GRIZZ: From what I can tell, the mission to the planet designated as Hestia 9 seemed unremarkable- after all, there weren’t even people on the planet. If I were the Captain of the Somerville, I think I would have made the same mistakes.
122. (SOUND) Spaceship landing
123. (SOUND) Some grass and brush being disturbed, as the spaceship lands
124. ZELDA: Alright, gang. Ready?
125. MEECHUM: Ready.
126. BIRCH: Let’s go
127. (SOUND) Zelda slaps a button
128. (SOUND) Spaceship door opens
129. BIRCH: We’re gonna try to be quick, Cap. We- uh- us - we- we have something later. Something planned.
130. (SOUND) Three sets of boots walking off of the ramp
131. MEECHUM: Shut your hole, Birch.
132. ZELDA: It’s a surprise baby shower.
133. (SOUND) Some beeps and stuff, as they start testing the air on the planet
134. (SOUND) Boots keep walking, but they’re moving from the metal of the ship’s ramp to grass
135. BIRCH: God damn it.
136. MEECHUM: Patel is gonna kill you for spoiling it.
137. ZELDA: Patel is the reason I figured it out. They left a bunch of baby themed wrapping paper in the rec room. [beat] We’ll be quick.
138. (SOUND) All three of them stop walking
139. ZELDA: Birch, why don’t you go do your thing with soil samples over there. Meechum, you can work on collecting- well- not water samples.
140. MEECHUM: I brought the drill. I’m gonna collect ice samples from the pond over there.
141. ZELDA: When we were flying in, I saw some white foliage, about a click east of us-
142. (SOUND) A few clicks and beeps on a device
143. ZELDA: Looking at the location, I think that’s the plant that I’m supposed to collect samples of. I’m gonna check it out. Keep comms open.
144. BIRCH: Got it.
145. (SOUND) Birch starts walking off one direction
146. MEECHUM: Don’t get lost!
147. (SOUND) Meechum starts walking another direction
148. (SOUND) Static
149. (MUSIC) Interstitial

SCENE THREE: The ESMV Somerville: Afternoon
1. (SOUND) Static
2. (SOUND) Working spaceship ambience
3. (SOUND) Zelda puttering around the lab
4. GRIZZ: It may not make for the most thrilling story, but the end of the world started there- with a botanist collecting samples of a plant. She probably woke that day, expecting things to be routine. We seldom get warning when our lives are about to be torn asunder.
5. ZELDA: Captain Zelda Cortez, research notes- Uhhh— Jesus, October 9th, 2109. Reminder to myself to get my wife’s birthday present in order.
6. (SOUND) Zelda sits down in a rolling chair
7. ZELDA: Mission to Hestia 9 was successful. Meechum is analyzing ice samples, Birch collected soil samples, and I’ve collected plant samples.
8. (SOUND) Zelda puts her feet up on a table
9. ZELDA: This might be the most interesting plant I’ve ever collected on a mission, and I believe it’s a cultivar- indicating that there was once intelligent life on Hestia 9. The area where I retrieved-
10. (SOUND) Beep of comms
11. ZELDA: [exasperated sigh]
12. (SOUND) Pressing a mechanical button
13. (SOUND) Beep of comms
14. ZELDA: Yes?
15. BIRCH: [through speaker] Uh, Cap?
16. ZELDA: Yes?
17. BIRCH: [through speaker] Could you please come to the rec room?
18. ZELDA: For no reason in particular?
19. BIRCH: [through speaker] I- You know- [beat] do I have to pretend that you don’t-
20. ZELDA: Know about my surprise baby shower? No. Give me 20 minutes. I have to finish recording my findings on that white- shrub? Shrub isn’t the right word.
21. BIRCH: The botanist doesn’t know if it’s a shrub?
22. ZELDA: When you’re a xenobotanist, earthly descriptions for plants don’t often apply. I don’t know what I would call this thing. Anyway- I have to finish recording my findings and clean up. I shouldn’t be too long.
23. BIRCH: [through speaker] Okie Doke.
24. (SOUND) Beep of comms
25. ZELDA: Where was I? Ah- yeah- I was reviewing the facts about the area from which I retrieved these samples.
26. (SOUND) Zelda puts her boots back down on the floor
27. (SOUND) Zelda gets up from the rolling chair
28. (SOUND) Zelda starts pacing around the plant as she talks
29. (SOUND) Slight groaning, from the Rampage
30. ZELDA: Initial assessments of specimens 57.3, A and B. I found this white plant among some ruins, at the coordinates provided by the Ministry ship who scanned the planet before. I’ve collected a dozen samples. I’ll be using A and B for my initial research, and samples C-L are on ice in storage.
The planet is not currently inhabited, but it seems there used to be an indigenous population there. These plants were grown outward, in concentric circles, in the middle of these ruins. I think it’s some kind of orchard.
It looks like something we have on earth, but my closest point of comparison is not a plant, and it no longer exists- Chondrocladia Lyra.
It was also known as the harp sponge, back on earth. Both the harp sponge and this specimen are shaped like ancient weather vanes. They have these arms- or stolons- that act as equidistant, symmetrical, vertical branches. The harp sponge on earth was a deep sea creature, and this plant was above ground, thriving in the -28 degree weather.
The harp sponge died out when the oceans became too warm. It was carnivorous, and looking at this plant I’ve collected, I believe it might be too. The big difference being that the harp sponge is an animal. Furthermore- how was this carnivorous plant surviving on a planet with no animal life?
The ends of each of this plant’s stolons has a small, bulbous growth. I haven’t figured out what those are, yet. I believe this species is dioecious, and as such, I’ve collected male and female plants. There are blue, dangling fruits on some of these samples. I’m running some of the components of the fruit through the mass spec, for analysis.
31. (SOUND) Groan gets louder
32. (SOUND) Whips sound
33. (SOUND) Zelda stops walking
34. ZELDA: Jesus Christ.
35. (SOUND) Crunch noise
36. (SOUND) Rampage whimpers
37. ZELDA: It- It moves! It moves a lot! N-N-Not like a plant- One- One of the plants, it- bites- it-
38. (SOUND) Zelda walks over to the specimens
39. ZELDA I-I-I- [beat] Holy shit. The- the male plant- sample B- it just sent out one of of those bulbous parts at the end of a stolon to rip a fruit form the female plant, sample A.
The- the bulbous parts open, and they have- for lack of a better word so far- teeth. It bit the other specimen. It’s- It’s cannibalistic. I wondered how a carnivorous plant was surviving on a planet with no animal life, and it- oh my god.
40. (SOUND) Soft groaning from the Rampage, as it starts working on spores
41. ZELDA: [exhales, collecting herself] Okay, back on task- Samples of the stolons of the plant show spicules- little hooks and barbs along their length.
In addition to its general appearance, it also shares this detail with the harp sponge. The harp sponge- it would use spicules to hold prey, and those spicules would release enzymes to digest it. I believe this plant uses it’s ability to move quickly, and those spicules, to draw in prey- and hold it while it digests.
From the little display samples A and B just gave me, I think I’m on the right track. Next on the agenda, I’m going to take the-
42. (SOUND) Rampage shoots spores
43. ZELDA: [startled, hurt] Jesus Christ. [beat] Fuck. [beat] What in the-
44. (SOUND) Zelda takes her shirt off
45. ZELDA: [quietly to herself] Spores? [to recording] Uhhh- the male plant- uh, sample B. It seems to have shot these yellow spores at me. They’re- [pained] gah-
46. (SOUND) Zelda is feeling around on the back of her shirt
47. ZELDA: They’re burning a hole through my shirt. [to herself] What the fuck.
48. (SOUND) Zelda takes her shirt off
49. ZELDA: [evaluating how she feels] My shirt is off, and my skin is burning. I can’t get a look, since it’s on my back. I’ll need to have Dr. Washington take a look at- [realizing she might have something contagious] Fuck- maybe I can’t have Dr. Washington check me out.
50. (SOUND) Zelda walks over to the comms
51. (SOUND) Comms beep
52. BIRCH: [through speaker] Yeah, Cap?
53. ZELDA: Hey, Birch. I’m- I’m afraid I may have to quarantine?
54. BIRCH: [through speaker] What?
55. ZELDA: This plant- it [pained]- it released spores at me.
56. BIRCH:[through speaker] And?
57. ZELDA: They’ve burned through my shirt.
58. BIRCH:[through speaker] Ouch.
59. ZELDA: Yeah.
60. BIRCH:[through speaker] That sucks, but why are you thinking quarantine?
61. ZELDA: And I’m supposed to be the one with the shitty memory? Do you not remember what the pollen from that flower on Artemis 12 did?
62. BIRCH:[through speaker] What are the chances you’ve found 2 plants whose means of reproduction cause violent diarrhea in humans?
63. ZELDA: Slim, but not impossible.
64. BIRCH:[through speaker] If you’re feeling okay, I think everyone would be fine without a quarantine.
65. ZELDA: Uh-huh, and do you know that because everyone is sitting in the rec room with you right now?
66. BIRCH:[through speaker] [evasive] No.
67. ZELDA: [sigh] I’m assuming Dr. Washington is there?
68. BIRCH:[through speaker] Uhhh-
69. ZELDA: She is. Have her grab her a first aid kit. These spores may not cause diarrhea, but my skin is burning. She should check it out.
70. BIRCH:[through speaker] Got it. See you in a sec.
71. (SOUND) Comms beep
72. (SOUND) Static
73. (MUSIC) Interstitial

SCENE FOUR: Rec Room, ESMV Somerville: About 6:00PM
1. (SOUND) Functioning space ship ambience
2. (SOUND) Chatter at a party
3. MEECHUM: Okay, Okay- it’s on- Hi, Paloma! We ambushed your wife with a baby shower. We thought you’d want to see the turnout for you and little Barnaby.
4. ZELDA: [laughs] Barnaby?
5. MEECHUM: It’s a good name.
6. ZELDA: It’s your name, Meechum.
7. MEECHUM: You said you hadn’t landed on a name yet!
8. ZELDA: It’s not gonna be Barnaby. You don’t even go by Barnaby. You go by BJ. You have people call you a shorthand for “blowjob” instead of Barnaby, that’s how much you hate the name.
9. MEECHUM: Point taken.
10. BIRCH: Show her what I got the baby!
11. (SOUND) Zelda reaches into a bag with tissue paper
12. (SOUND) Zelda pulls out a little baby onesie
13. ZELDA: Birch got us a little infant sized Science Ministry uniform onesie.
14. BIRCH: Come on, show her the embroidery I did.
15. ZELDA: [chuckles] And they embroidered “CRAP-tain Cortez” where the name and rank tag goes.
16. BIRCH: Because your baby will be the captain of pooping.
17. MEECHUM: She gets it.
18. WASHINGTON: How’re you feeling, Captain?
19. ZELDA: Bad. Not gonna lie.
20. WASHINGTON: You’re sweating a lot.
21. ZELDA: Shit, I am?
22. (SOUND) Zelda starts wiping sweat off of her face with a rag
23. (SOUND) Washington grabs a thermometer
24. (SOUND) Washington presses a button
25. (SOUND) Beep sound
26. WASHINGTON: Yikes.
27. ZELDA: What?
28. WASHINGTON: You’re running a fever.
29. (SOUND) Rampage groaning starts fading in
30. ZELDA: [feeling shitty] Tracks. I feel clammy, and I’m having trouble focusing.
31. BIRCH: Hey, what’s that sound?
32. MEECHUM: It sounds like strain on the hull.
33. (SOUND) The whispers start fading in
34. WASHINGTON: It doesn’t sound like it’s coming from-
35. ZELDA: [choking pained sounds, as a Rampage arm is coming out of her]
36. (SOUND) Flesh ripping
37. BIRCH: [screams. Is eviscerated]
38. (SOUND) Camera is dropped
39. WASHINGTON: [Screams in fear]
40. MEECHUM: Birch!
41. (SOUND) Arm punches through Washington’s abdomen
42. WASHINGTON: [gets a hole punched in their gut and dies]
43. (SOUND) Body falls on ground
44. MEECHUM: [crying, whimpering, terror] Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh-
45. (SOUND) Arm whips around
46. (SOUND) Arm decapitates Meechum
47. MEECHUM: [sharp choke sound, and then dead]
48. (SOUND) Meechum’s body falls to floor
49. (SOUND) Static
50. (MUSIC) Dramatic strings fade in for Grizz’s line
51. (SOUND) Ambient sounds stop
52. GRIZZ: Often, people are annoyed with how rigidly I follow rules. I know, I know- I’m a thief. What do I care about rules? I break them professionally.
Some rules- they exist for good reason. The quarantine protocols on the Somerville existed for a good reason. People played it fast a loose with the rules, and the world ended- a world I never got to see. What must it have been like, to have hopes and dreams for the future, beyond survival?
53. (SOUND) Static
54. (SOUND) Music stops
55. (SOUND) Ambient sound of working space ship starts again
56. (SOUND) klaxons in the background
57. (SOUND) Zelda is in really bad shape. She should barely have it together and have trouble talking
58. ZELDA: H- Hello- this is- [beat] this is- [beat] [voice breaking] I don’t know who I am. I- I’m on a ship, and there’s- there’s something in here with me. I can-
59. (SOUND) Groaning starts fading in
60. (SOUND) Whispers start fading in
61. ZELDA: I can hear it. [voice breaking] I- Everyone else is dead. I don’t- [choking, as Rampage takes over] know- who I- [hacking cough]
62. (SOUND) Phlegm and blood splattering from the cough
63. (SOUND) Stereo whispers should take over both ears
64. (SOUND) Groaning gets louder
65. (SOUND) Static
66. (SOUND) Zelda is hobbling down a hallway of her ship
67. ZELDA: I- I’m- apparently- Captain Zelda Cortez. I- I’m recording using the camera on one of the EV suits I found. I don’t remember who I am- or my life in general- but my technical knowledge seems to still be intact.
I’m recording, because I keep losing time- passing out. When I finally came to, I- [coughs]
68. (SOUND) Phlegm and blood splattering from the cough
69. ZELDA: [collects herself] When I finally came to, I investigated the room where the crew was killed. I- I watched a video someone made. [voice breaking] I am the one who killed them. I am. The sound I heard, and I thought was something on the ship- it’s coming from me. Whatever has infected me- it made me kill them.
My hope is that if I’m in the suit, recording, and I lose time again- I can see what I’ve missed. [voice breaking] At least there’s not anyone left for me to hurt.
I’m not going to make it through this. I should not make it through this. I can’t bring the crew back to life, but maybe I can give their families some answers as to what happened. The goal is for this to serve as a record of what happened to the Somerville.
I have the cooling system on in the suit. My- My body temperature is- [checks readout] 42 degrees Celsius? That can’t be- that can’t be right. I’d be- dead.
I’ve been trying to collect information around the ship. I- I don’t know what I’m looking for. I found who I was through watching the video from before the massacre. I’m gonna go look for my quarters. There was a map in the hall, and I should be approaching the captain’s quarters.
70. (SOUND) Zelda stops walking
71. ZELDA: Speak of the devil. Home sweet home.
72. (SOUND) Zelda slaps a button to enter her quarters
73. (SOUND) door to quarters opens
74. (SOUND) Zelda walks into her quarters
75. (SOUND) Zelda closes the door behind her
76. ZELDA: Okay. This is my room. [beat] Let’s see what my desk will tell me.
77. (SOUND) Zelda takes a few steps towards her desk
78. (SOUND) Opens a drawer
79. (SOUND) Pulls out a little spiral notebook
80. (SOUND) Flips open a page in the notebook
81. ZELDA: A notebook with passwords. I guess my memory isn’t great in the first place. [beat] Oh, here’s the password for this computer. [considers] I need to take this with me.
82. (SOUND) Zelda types on a mechanical keyboard
83. ZELDA: It worked. Hope the rest of the passwords in here are up-to-date.
84. (SOUND) Zelda pockets the spiral notebook
85. (SOUND) Clicks on a mouse
86. ZELDA: Let’s see what’s in my computer. [beat] A “private” folder? Please be something more useful than porn.
87. (SOUND) Clicks on a folder
88. ZELDA: “Paloma”?
89. (SOUND) Clicks on a file
90. (SOUND) Paloma’s lines should be through the speaker
91. PALOMA: Hi, baby! Hope and I went to the doctor today. Everything looks okay on the sonogram-
92. ZELDA: [quietly to herself] Sonogram?
93. PALOMA: -and the doctor says she’s as healthy as a horse- a comparison that Hope did not appreciate, at her advanced stage of pregnancy. 2 more months, and we’ll be meeting our little Griselda.
94. ZELDA: [hates that name] [quietly to herself] Griselda?
95. PALOMA: Now, I know you just said “Griselda” in a disgusted tone, under your breath- but hear me out- It’s your name. I know you hate it, and that’s why you go by Zelda. If she hates it, she can go by a nickname, or her middle name! I think we should make her middle name “Hope.” She’s been an incredible surrogate, and I’d like our baby to carry part of their surrogate mom with them.
But as for they baby’s first name- I know, you think it’s dated and problematic when people name babies after themselves- but this is me wanting to name our baby after you. And if the kid grows up and hates the name- maybe they want something that feels more gender affirming- they can change it. It’s not a big deal.
Anyway- you can tell me how much you hate that idea in just 3 weeks! Ahh! I wish the Ministry would let you off the hook a little sooner before the due date, but whatever. [happy sigh] I can’t believe you’re going to be home for good.
In addition to getting the soil prepped for us to start growing food, I’ve been working on dad’s ship. I know- you didn’t know what to do with it- but what if we used it for family vacations? We could land it and go camping anywhere in the world!
I’m going to assume you’re nodding and saying, “Yes, my darling Paloma- what an incredible idea. I hope you’ve been spending most of your free time doing things like updating the ship’s computers to Ministry level hardware, and renovating one of the cargo holds into living quarters.”
And to answer your questions- yes. Yes, I am. I certainly won’t have time once the baby’s here. I promise, I’ll be done updating the ship before we’re officially moms.
Anyway, finish up your space botanist stuff, and come back home to me. [sigh] Te amo, mi vida.
96. (SOUND) Beep through a computer speaker
97. ZELDA: [crying] Okay. I’m married. I have a baby on the way. I’m a botanist. I’m about to retire. [voice breaking] I’m not gonna be alive for any of that. [haggard breath]
98. (SOUND) Zelda starts typing some more
99. (SOUND) Zelda clicks a few things
100. ZELDA: [reading the computer] Recordings- Recordings I made just a few hours ago. Let’s see-
101. (SOUND) Zelda Clicks Something
102. (SOUND) Audio from earlier
(SOUND) Rampage shoots spores
ZELDA: [startled, hurt] Jesus Christ. [beat] Fuck. [beat] What in the-
(SOUND) Zelda takes her shirt off
ZELDA: [quietly to herself] Spores? [to recording] Uhhh- the male plant- uh, sample B. It seems to have shot these yellow spores at me. They’re- [pained] gah-
103. (SOUND) Rampage groans and whispers begin to fade in
104. (SOUND) Audio from earlier
(SOUND) Zelda is feeling around on the back of her shirt
ZELDA: They’re burning a hole through my shirt. [to herself] What the fuck.
(SOUND) Zelda takes her shirt off
105. ZELDA: [pained, the Rampage is taking over. She should be groaning while the audio is playing]
106. (SOUND) Audio from earlier, through speaker:
ZELDA: [evaluating how she feels] My shirt is off, and my skin is burning. I can’t get a look, since it’s on my back. I’ll need to have Dr. Washington take a look at- [realizing she might have something contagious] Fuck- maybe I can’t have Dr. Washington check me out.
(SOUND) Zelda walks over to the comms
107. (SOUND) Zelda falls to the floor
108. ZELDA: S-s-something is-
109. (SOUND) Big rampage groan
110. ZELDA: [pained yell]

113. (SOUND) Audio from earlier, through speaker
(SOUND) Comms beep
BIRCH: [through speaker] Yeah, Cap?
ZELDA: Hey, Birch. I’m- I’m afraid I may have to quarantine?
BIRCH: [through speaker] What?
114. (SOUND) Rampage smashes the computer to pieces
115. (SOUND) Static
116. (MUSIC) Interstitial

SCENE FIVE: Hall of ESMV Somerville: Time is ???
1. (SOUND) Functioning space ship ambience
2. (SOUND) Footsteps, limping. Zelda is moving through the ship
3. ZELDA: [haggard breathing. She’s bloodied and doing quite poorly. Her breathing should continue as Grizz talks.]
4. GRIZZ: The humans that are left- most of them blame her for what happened. How can one person be solely responsible for something like The Rampage being set loose on earth? The recordings I stole- they prove she did everything in her power to keep the earth safe.
The real question, is why did the Rampage Ministry, née Science Ministry- want these events kept secret? What knowledge do they contain, that they don’t want others to learn? Every time I watch them, I try to glean something I may have missed, on my previous hundred viewings. If the clues are there, I lack the context to recognize them.
5. ZELDA: [walking, having trouble breathing and talking at the same time] Recording with my EV suit cam again. My- my body temperature is now so high, I can’t get a reading from the suit. I have the suit set to cool to -20 Celsius. It- it’s not cold enough.
I didn’t lose any more of my memory, after my blackout- at least, I don’t think. I awoke to find the computer in my quarters destroyed. Looking at the EV suit video from when I blacked out, it looks like I’m the one who destroyed it. That groaning sound the plants made- it was so loud. I don’t know if there’s some intelligence to this thing, or if it’s increasing my aggression to the point of wanton destruction.
Now, I’m heading to the botany lab. I’m not gonna hold my breath, thinking I’ll find a way to save myself. [voice breaking] I can feel that I’m too far gone to make it, and I don’t want to risk spreading my infection. I want to see how to destroy this thing, in case anyone at the ministry finds this plant again.
Here we go.
6. (SOUND) Zelda stops walking
7. (SOUND)Zelda presses a button to open the door
8. (SOUND) Door to botany lab opens
9. (SOUND) Zelda walks inside the botany lab
10. ZELDA: Holy hell
11. (SOUND) Zelda stops walking
12. ZELDA: The plant- the one that infected me- both the samples look to have eaten every other plant in the lab. I don’t know how many plants I had in here before- I see evidence of a hundred or so- they’re all gone.
They’ve grown, immensely. Guessing from what I saw on the video, I’d say they were about 30 centimeters tall when I brought them on board. Now- they’re touching the ceiling of the lab.
13. (SOUND) Rampage groans and whispers start
14. (SOUND) Plant starts moving
15. ZELDA: [panicked] That sound. That sound is what I hear when I’m about to black out. I- It-
16. (SOUND) Rampage whips out a tendril
17. (SOUND) Horrible crunch, as it goes straight through her shoulder and pulls itself back out
18. ZELDA: [shoulder has been impaled. Should be a pained sound for when it goes through her shoulder and one when it comes back out]
19. (SOUND) Zelda falls to the floor
20. ZELDA: [pained, panicked sounds. She’s scrambling to get back up]
21. (SOUND) Rampage groans and whispers are loud
22. ZELDA: [intense pain] Fuck.
23. (SOUND) Zelda is desperately crawling to the door
24. (SOUND) Zelda slaps the button to open the door
25. (SOUND) Door opens
26. (SOUND) Zelda staggers through the door
27. (SOUND) Rampage groans become more distant
28. (SOUND) Zelda slaps the button to close the door
29. (SOUND) Rampage groans become muffled
30. (SOUND) Zelda collapses to the floor
31. ZELDA: [in so much pain, it’s an effort to get words out] It- It moved. It- it tried to eat me. There’s a chunk of- [pained sound] There’s a chunk of my shoulder that’s missing. I- [starts choking]
32. (SOUND) Rampage groans and whispers fade in (not muffled, in addition to the other ones)
33. ZELDA: [choking on blood]
34. (SOUND) Static
35. (SOUND) All other ambient sounds end
36. (PAUSE)
37. (SOUND) Alarm blaring
38. ZELDA: [gasp]
39. (SOUND) Ship ambience begins again

44. ZELDA: [in an incredible amount of pain] I’m on the bridge now?
45. (SOUND) Zelda is trying to get up
46. ZELDA: [Pained sound, as she attempts to use her injured shoulder]
47. (SOUND) Zelda stumbles and slips
48. ZELDA: [pained sound as she slips] [exertion, as she hauls herself into a chair]
49. (SOUND) Zelda plops herself into a chair at a terminal

53. (SOUND) Zelda reaches into her pocket
54. (SOUND) Zelda pulls out her notebook
55. (SOUND) Zelda flips a few pages, with shaking hands
56. ZELDA: Navigation System password. Seems right.
57. (SOUND) Zelda types on the keyboard
58. ZELDA: Thank god. Okay, where am I?
59. (SOUND) Zelda types on the keyboard
60. ZELDA: Oh my god.
61. (SOUND) Zelda types on the keyboard
62. ZELDA: Every time I’ve blacked out, the ship has made several superluminal jumps towards earth.
63. (SOUND) Zelda types on the keyboard
64. ZELDA: God damn it. Two more jumps, and we’ll be at the Ministry’s moon space dock. I need to set the self destruct now.
65. (SOUND) Zelda starts typing a command and presses enter
66. ZELDA: Is this it?
67. (SOUND) Zelda types up self destruct command
68. COMPUTER: Initiating self destruct system. Please enter command level authorization code.
69. ZELDA: [to herself, as she’s going through the notebook] Command level authorization code
70. (SOUND) Zelda flips through spiral
71. ZELDA: I- I’m not going to be c-c-coherent much longer. I’m losing a lot of blood. [beat] I- I don’t see a password labeled “command”.
72. (SOUND) Rampage groaning a whispers start fading in
73. ZELDA: No, no, it’s trying to take over again- it’s- [sees something that might be the password] Here! This string of numbers and letters in red. It’s the only one that’s unlabeled, I have to- [starts choking]
74. (SOUND) Zelda types in a long string of numbers and letters
75. COMPUTER: Self Destruct Activated. T-minus 10 minutes, until self destruct.
76. ZELDA: [pained groans, struggling to talk] If you’re watching these later- [starts crying] I want to be remembered for trying to stop this. I don’t- [choking on her own blood]
77. (SOUND) Zelda falls over in her chair
78. (SOUND) Rampage plant comes out of her back
79. (SOUND) Static
80. (MUSIC) Interstitial

13. (SOUND) Some typing
14. ZELDA: I-I-I’m sending out a communications beacon with these recordings. I’m going to t-t-try to contact space dock.
15. (SOUND) Typing
16. ZELDA: [muffled. Pained, out of breath, as she’s trying to type while mortally wounded]
17. (SOUND) Typing
18. (SOUND) Negative beep
19. ZELDA: [upset, pained] The-the plant, it’s fucked up communications. I can’t get a clear signal to space dock.
20. (SOUND) typing
21. ZELDA: I-I’ve launched the beacon. [crying] I’m going to try to warn space dock anyway. [pained] I- I’ve lost a lot of blood from my shoulder, and the fever- I’m having trouble staying awake.
22. (SOUND) Audio from the Intro:
(SOUND) Muffled sound of switches being flipped and some mechanical keyboard typing
(SOUND) Zelda slaps a button
23. Zelda: Tell my wife, tell Paloma I- [crying] She can name the baby after me- [sobbing] I don’t remember who I am, but I remember how I feel- and that I love them both. Please, don’t- [coughing up blood, passing out]

SCENE SEVEN: The Lolita Lebrón: About 10:00AM
1. (SOUND) The Lolita Lebrón ship ambience
2. (SOUND) Lebrón Klaxons are soft, as Grizz is talking
3. (SOUND) soft, concerned Richard sounds
4. (SOUND) Hope’s lines should be playing softly in the background
5. HOPE: Grizz, sweetie- you have to get up. Grizz. There’s- there’s a ministry ship docking at an airlock right now. Grizz. Please wake up. GRIZZ! Oh my god, what I would give to be able to slap your right now. GRIZZ! Wake up. Grizz, Ministry police are about to board the ship. You have to wake up!
6. GRIZZ: So, there’s your context. Someone ignored quarantine protocols about 38 years ago, a fucking plant aborted a self destruct protocol intended to save us all, and now my life is the way it is now.
Given the way that I am, and the life I lead- The Rampage taking me and my memories seems like an inevitability. I’ve made it 38 years. I’ve had some close calls.
Eventually, my luck is going to run out. I can’t control a whole hell of a lot, but I can leave myself records of my life. Rampage has taken enough from me- I can’t let it take who I am.
7. (SOUND) Klaxons at full volume
8. (SOUND) Hope is at full volume now too
9. HOPE: Grizz. Grizz, you have to get up.
10. GRIZZ: [restless, half awake sounds]
11. HOPE: Grizz. GRIZZ!
12. (SOUND) Grizz rolls over in bed
13. HOPE: You’ve left me no choice.
14. (SOUND) Big horn sound
15. GRIZZ: Jesus Christ.
16. (SOUND) Grizz sits up suddenly
17. (SOUND) Grizz hits her head on the ceiling above her bed
18. GRIZZ: [groaning about her head, and feeling shitty in general]
19. HOPE: Grizz, sweetie- you have to get up. There’s-
20. GRIZZ: Hope, the fuck I say about my room? And the big horn! I’ve begged you to not use that. It does not agree with my autism.
21. HOPE: Only use the comms to talk to you without warning in an emergency. I also told you I’d only use the big horn sound in an emergency too.
22. GRIZZ: You didn’t turn visuals on, did you?
23. HOPE: Nope. I learned that one time I barged in on you with the Blathian woman- but I-
24. GRIZZ: Then what the hell are you doing playing horn sounds while I sleep? How big of an emergency could this be?
25. HOPE: It’s an emergency- the scale of which depends on whether or not you get your ass out of bed. I’ve been trying to wake you up. There’s a Rampage Ministry ship docked right down this corridor at Airlock B. They’re about to board.
26. (SOUND) Grizz sits up
27. (SOUND) Grizz gets up, starts putting on her pants
28. GRIZZ: You didn’t wake me up when their ship showed up on sensors? You’re in the goddamn ship’s computer, why didn’t you-
29. (SOUND) Grizz puts on her boots
30. HOPE: Kid, I did try. I’ve been trying to wake you for about 15 minutes. You’re not doing great, huh?
31. GRIZZ: No. I’m not. I need to get more supplies. It’s been 3 weeks since I last-
32. HOPE: I know.
33. GRIZZ: I’m gonna go take care of the Ministry assholes. [sigh] I thought we were several light years from Ministry space.
34. (SOUND) Grizz puts on her jacket
35. HOPE: We are- well, we were. If they’re all the way out here, I think-
36. GRIZZ: They’re expanding their colonies.
37. HOPE: Yeah.
38. GRIZZ: Can you turn off eyes and ears everywhere but in here? When I get out there, I’m probably gonna have to-
39. HOPE: I know.
40. GRIZZ: I don’t want to, and I don’t want you seeing me when-
41. HOPE: I know. I’m sorry you keep getting put in positions where you have to.
42. GRIZZ: Can you distract Richard while I take care of things?
43. HOPE: As much as I can, being a disembodied voice.
44. GRIZZ: That’s all I expect.
45. (SOUND) Grizz leans down to scratch Richard
46. (SOUND) Contented little Richard sounds
47. GRIZZ: You be good for Auntie Hope, until I get back- Okay?
48. (SOUND) Grizz stands back up
49. HOPE: Richard! Richard, you wanna have laser pointer time? I may not have a body anymore, but I can make you a laser.
50. (SOUND) Grizz walks to her bedroom door

52. (SOUND) Excited Richard sounds
53. (SOUND) Richard jumping around Grizz’a quarters

59. (SOUND) Richard ambience becomes muffled
60. (SOUND) Grizz starts walking through the ship
61. (SOUND) Slightly Distant ship door opening
62. (SOUND) Two sets of feet in boots walk through the door, slightly distant
63. GRIZZ: Howdy, y’all.
64. (SOUND) One of the Ministry police charges a weapon.
65. COP 1: Freeze!
66. GRIZZ: Now, I know you’re not gonna come into my home, unannounced, and threaten me with a charge rifle.
67. (SOUND) Other ministry police charged weapon
68. COP 2: You’re in Rampage Ministry space without registration. By order of the Ministry, we have the right to -
69. GRIZZ: The right to suck my fat, juicy cock?
70. COP 1: Listen, sweetheart- you’re going to be arrested. You might get off with just a 1-2 year contract as punishment. You don’t need to die over this, just let us-
71. GRIZZ: Yeah, sugartits- whatever- Listen, As you can probably see, I’m not feeling too hot. Unfortunately, there’s no way I can let you both live. You’ve seen me, and my ship. Now, you want to do a real public service, you both can crawl back into the airlock and give your sidearms a little blowjob.
Make sure you work the trigger and swallow. They like that. Once you two suck your guns to completion- I can shoot ya’ out the airlock and hose the whole thing down. That’s the one I use for my trash, anyways.
72. COP 2: Are you always this vulgar?
73. GRIZZ: Nah. I gotta sleep, at some point.
74. COP 1: You’re outnumbered.
75. GRIZZ: You’d think that would matter, but it doesn’t.
76. COP 2: What?
77. GRIZZ: God, you’re really gonna make me use the rest of my limited energy, aren’t you? It would be so much easier if you just walked back in there and offed yourselves. I can’t let you live- you’ve seen my ship.
78. COP 1: What the fuck are you talking about?
79. GRIZZ: I’m talking about the fact that I’m gonna kill you first- evisceration, most likely. It’s easy enough. And then you- you’re gonna see your buddy’s guts falling out and start running. At that point, I’m gonna hamstring you- in the literal sense of the verb- so you can’t go nowhere.
You’ll be crying and writhing on the floor, rolling around in your dead buddy’s blood and guts- and that’s when I’m gonna punch a hole straight through your skull. Then, I’m gonna go into your ship, scrub it of all information that could lead back to me, and set the self destruct.
80. COP 1: You’re insane.
81. GRIZZ: Darn tootin’
82. COP 2: Enough of this.
83. (SOUND) Ministry energy rifle blast
84. GRIZZ: [slight pained sound at getting hit] Now, come on. You fucked up my favorite sleep shirt!
85. (SOUND) Groaning starts fading in
86. (SOUND) Whispers start fading in
87. COP 1: H-How are you-
88. GRIZZ: How am I fine?
89. COP 2: You hear that? It’s Rampage.
90. COP 1: Oh god, oh god-
91. COP 2: Y- You’re infected?
92. GRIZZ: [cold] Since the day I was born.
93. (SOUND) Ministry energy rifle blasts, about 5
94. (SOUND) Gun clicks
95. GRIZZ: God damn it, would you stop? I’m gonna have so many holes to mend.
96. COP 2: I’m out! Oh, god, I’m out.
97. COP 1: H-How are you still alive. Y- You don’t look infected-
