The Gossip Girl Theme Performed By Steve Marchion.

Transcripts

Steve:

I did run through that. Like, is this a fake

Steve:

priest? No, because Louis knows him. Like, Louis

Steve:

had the whole conversation with him and knows who

Steve:

he is, so it doesn't seem like he's a fake priest.

Steve:

He's just a priest. That goes outside the.

Leif:

He's just a dirty priest.

Steve:

He's just a dirty priest. I think we're just

Steve:

calling them priests.

Leif:

Yes, He's just a priest.

Steve:

He's just a priest.

Leif:

Hey, Upper East Siders and all you scandal loving

Leif:

listeners out there, you've just tuned into the

Leif:

non judging breakfast pod, where the coffee is

Leif:

strong, the waffles are fresh, and the gossip is

Leif:

hotter than ever. My name is Leif and I'm your

Leif:

seasoned Gossip Girl veteran.

Steve:

And I'm Steve, the newbie, the greenhorn, the

Steve:

rookie, the. I don't know, Leif. What am I now in

Steve:

season five?

Leif:

I've considered them all. But no matter what, this

Leif:

podcast was conceived out of love and I'm going to

Leif:

record it.

Steve:

Well, even if no one listens, Leif, you've still

Steve:

got me. So here's the deal, folks. Leif has been

Steve:

listening, watching Gossip Girl since it first

Steve:

aired, and I'm diving in for the first time. And

Steve:

together, we're your dynamic duo, bringing you all

Steve:

the drama, romance, and sometimes questionable

Steve:

fashion choices of this iconic 2007 series.

Leif:

Bring your magnifying glasses, because each week

Leif:

we're dissecting every juicy detail of the show

Leif:

one episode at a time. We'll connect the dots,

Leif:

uncover those sneaky little Easter eggs, and of

Leif:

course, serve up some piping hot behind the scenes

Leif:

tea. And expect some iconic phantom moments too,

Leif:

because what's a deep dive without a little drama?

Steve:

And since we are all about inclusivity here on the

Steve:

non judging breakfast pod, there is always a seat

Steve:

for you at the non judging breakfast table. So go

Steve:

ahead and grab your mimosa, a cup of coffee or

Steve:

roll up something from Chuck's medicine cabinet

Steve:

and you won't feel a thing.

Leif:

And before we start today, there's a sad week in

Leif:

the teen drama world. James Vanderbeek passed away

Leif:

from colorectic Cancel.

Steve:

Yeah, it was. It's sad. He's like six months older

Steve:

than me. Nine months older than me. Uh, which when

Steve:

I, I remember seeing his birthday and being like,

Steve:

damn. Like, uh, yeah, so, yeah, really sad. Um,

Steve:

great, talented kid, um, who grew up into a

Steve:

really. Yeah. When I came in, you were watching

Steve:

Don't Trust the Bee, which I think his performance

Steve:

on that show is just spectacular.

Leif:

I just, yeah. Scrolling through all the tributes

Leif:

on Instagram. Um, all the. It just seems like he's

Leif:

such a good person.

Steve:

Yeah. Like everybody genuinely loved him. I saw

Steve:

Sarah Michelle Geller had said something about

Steve:

growing up in TV together and some. Yeah,

Leif:

but on some more positive things. Or at least

Leif:

slightly more positive things.

Steve:

I'm not sure.

Leif:

Season five, Episode two of Gossip Girl, Beauty

Leif:

and the Feast.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Original air date was October 3, 2011 slightly

Leif:

more positive. And of course, the title is based

Leif:

on Beauty and the Beast.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah, of course.

Leif:

One of my least favorite fairy tales.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Um, I mean, definitely teaches kids,

Steve:

you know, hey, hey, little girls. You should find

Steve:

that man who's really a piece of shit and tame him

Steve:

and fix him.

Leif:

Well, it's very much like Chuck and Blair.

Steve:

It really is.

Leif:

Forever Team Gaston. Gaston was right,

Steve:

LeFou, I believe. I've been thinking.

Leif:

Just because he was an asshole too, doesn't mean

Leif:

he wasn't right.

Steve:

I think.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

She was kidnapped and held against her will. She

Steve:

just fell in love, though. Stockholm syndrome. The

Steve:

children's fairy tale.

Leif:

This episode was written by Sarah Goodman. I

Leif:

noticed that M. She had previously written the

Leif:

Wrath of Khan, how to Succeed in Bassness, the

Leif:

Hurt Locket, Ex husbands and Wives, Double

Leif:

Identity, the Witches of Bushwick while you

Leif:

weren't Sleeping, and Shattered Bass.

Steve:

Which one's Witches of Bushwick?

Leif:

That's the one where Jenny and Juliet and Vanessa

Leif:

all team up and take down Serena. M. The Masked

Leif:

Ball.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Because, uh, uh, every time she

Steve:

writes an episode, it's a roller. I have the same

Steve:

comment that she has some good episodes. She also

Steve:

has some terrible episodes.

Leif:

While youe Weren't Sleeping was a very good

Leif:

episode that was directed by Norman Buckley.

Steve:

Yeah, but Hurt Locket is one of my least favorite

Steve:

episodes, I don't feel.

Leif:

Not necessarily her fault.

Steve:

What's that?

Leif:

Not necessarily her fault.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. It's not a good story.

Leif:

Yeah, it's just a stupid fucking Chuck's mom

Leif:

bullshit.

Steve:

It was just a really dumb plotline.

Leif:

Yeah. The episode was directed once, uh, again by

Leif:

Mark Pizznarski who, uh, did the premiere episode

Leif:

as well. So once again to back ep. It's like a two

Leif:

part premiere just like last season.

Steve:

Yeah, it makes sense to do. It's pretty much how

Steve:

they've run it since second season, so.

Leif:

But I think only he gets the opportunity to direct

Leif:

both.

Steve:

Both. Right.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Um. Oh, I thought Saffron and who was it? Goodman.

Steve:

Did see the back to back. Did.

Leif:

Well, they're writers. This. He's the direct.

Leif:

Pizar is the director. Oh.

Steve:

I. For Some reason I was thinking that the same

Steve:

person directed last season, the first two also.

Leif:

Yes. Yeah. Mark Pizar. That's what he said.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, okay. He, he did, yeah.

Leif:

Usually like. Yeah, it's usually a two part

Leif:

premiere, but only he gets to the provision, I

Leif:

think, uh, of directing both parts.

Steve:

And he did it in the third and fourth season and

Steve:

the first season. Oh, okay. All right. That's

Steve:

right. I forgot he, I forgot that he did the

Steve:

first, the season, the series,

Leif:

the pilot and then also the wild brunch.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Yeah.

Leif:

And we get some new guest stars this week. We get

Leif:

Roxanne Mosquita, or Mosquita as Beatrice

Leif:

Grimaldi. Kind of interesting because before this

Leif:

she's almost exclusively in French language stuff.

Leif:

But then after Gossip Girl, it's almost all

Leif:

Hollywood English language stuff.

Steve:

Oh, interesting.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Uh, uh, it's, it's also interesting because. And,

Steve:

and I don't, I don't haven't watched a lot of

Steve:

French film or French media in general, but I know

Steve:

I've criticized Louis acting a few times in this.

Steve:

She acts the same. And I'm wondering if it's like

Steve:

a cultural thing in, in filmmaking that it is just

Steve:

like a little bit more. I feel they are both a

Steve:

little dry and forced in, in their acting. And I

Steve:

don't know if it's a struggling uh, with the

Steve:

language versus the, the material and what they're

Steve:

doing or if it is a stylistic thing and seeing

Steve:

them paired together like Louis and Beatrice

Steve:

actually had. It's, it's the first time that I've

Steve:

really found Louis to have chemistry with someone

Steve:

was when it was with Beatrice and, and, and it

Steve:

wasn't, you know, romantic chemistry, but they

Steve:

really felt like siblings and it was like this

Steve:

pair works, but he doesn't seem to fit with

Steve:

everything else. And neither did she. But she was

Steve:

just didn't interact as much so.

Leif:

And ah, I feel like that's kind of intentional.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I think so too. I, I just felt like

Steve:

they really lined up and I wonder. I do. I just

Steve:

kind of had that thought of. I wonder if it's a

Steve:

cultural thing or a process thing where French

Steve:

actors have a different process or, or a, uh,

Steve:

different expectation on what's going to be

Steve:

delivered on screen.

Leif:

We also get introduced to Marc Bernard playing

Leif:

Father Cavalier.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

The hot dirty priest.

Steve:

The dirty priest. Robin. Robin. Both times we

Steve:

watched I thought they were not allowed to do

Steve:

that. They're not.

Leif:

But yeah. So he's had an interesting career. His

Leif:

second role ever was a Show called Ocean Avenue,

Leif:

where he did 183 out of 235 episodes all in one

Leif:

year.

Steve:

Wow. From 2002 to 2003, 183 episodes in one year.

Steve:

Yeah, that has to be released, like, every other

Steve:

day. Like, literally, you're releasing an episode

Steve:

every other day.

Leif:

Uh, it was a cop show, apparently, but it was a

Leif:

daytime, so.

Steve:

Oh, well, yeah, if it's a daytime soap, that makes

Steve:

sense.

Leif:

And then he did 66 episodes of a show called Watch

Leif:

over me. And then after that, just, like, small

Leif:

one off, and I've heard of Watch over me and one

Leif:

or two episode recurring things. So that, uh, is

Leif:

our guest stars. Why don't you give us that

Leif:

vulture recap?

Steve:

Sure thing. Uh, last night, it was as if a plague

Steve:

had swept the Upper east side, one whose symptoms

Steve:

were uniquely tailored to their hosts. Nearly

Steve:

everyone on Gossip Girl was suffering. Blair was

Steve:

the pregnantest pregnant person ever. For full of

Steve:

bile and puke and inconvenient emotions. She wants

Steve:

badly to be a princess, but, uh, the determination

Steve:

of the creature inside of her to make trouble is

Steve:

an almost certain indication of who its father is.

Steve:

And it's not mild manner Louis, even if he is

Steve:

surprisingly virile. Meanwhile, Chuck was

Steve:

experiencing acute female hysteria. Dan was

Steve:

lovelorn as ever, and Nate had an itch that only a

Steve:

cougar could scratch. And then there was Serena,

Steve:

who, as always, was suffering from chronic

Steve:

stupidity.

Leif:

Oh, my.

Steve:

Serena in this episode is just one after another

Steve:

of being like, who would do that? But then, like

Steve:

m. Serena,

Leif:

it really

Steve:

is established that she really would do all of

Steve:

what she does.

Leif:

In this, we open Act 1 with a gossip Girl

Leif:

monologue. Rise and shine, Upper east siders. It's

Leif:

time for your annual checkup. Lucky for you,

Leif:

doctors take their confidentiality seriously

Leif:

around here. We open at Doroda's ultrasound

Leif:

appointment. Blair is also in attendance and

Leif:

surprisingly concerned about things. When the

Leif:

doctor steps away, Dorota quickly realizes Blair

Leif:

is also pregnant. But Blair says it has to stay

Leif:

secret for now.

Steve:

Yeah, we kind of saw this coming from last week,

Steve:

and, yeah, man, this is a shark that didn't need

Steve:

jumping. No, it really did.

Leif:

And they're hitting, like, every single

Leif:

stereotype.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah, it is. Yep. Every trip, every one of

Steve:

them. And, like, so much more ridiculous than real

Steve:

life.

Leif:

And.

Steve:

And, I mean, I know it's a TV show, but it's also,

Steve:

like, come on, come on.

Leif:

At the Empire, Nate is having some mechanical

Leif:

issues, and Chuck is still feeling nothing. Nate

Leif:

says the issue is mental rather than physical. He

Leif:

is still Hung up on the mysterious woman from la.

Leif:

He says his mom is helping him get an insurance

Leif:

internship.

Steve:

I like Chuck in this. I liked Chuck in this

Steve:

episode. In general, despite the dumbness of the

Steve:

Chuck storyline, the non Chuck storylines that

Steve:

he's a part of were funny. This interaction with

Steve:

Nate when he's like. When he's like, you know,

Steve:

it's your. You've got that mom thing. She called,

Steve:

by the way. Did she leave a number or any way to

Steve:

get in touch? Last I checked, it was Ann

Steve:

Archibald, and it's the same number she always

Steve:

has. Uh, also, when he's like, maybe some

Steve:

pharmaceutical help. Oh, no, no. I wish the weed.

Steve:

I wish it was the weed. That's not what I mean. To

Steve:

which Robin also responded, nate, take the pill

Steve:

because you don't want to get a reputation

Leif:

at the loft. Rufus is sad Dan isn't helping him

Leif:

with breakfast. But Dan is too busy trying to

Leif:

figure out which publisher has. His attempts to

Leif:

hack the bank where Vanessa's check came from

Leif:

aren't going great, so he calls Serena for advice.

Leif:

She suggests asking Chuck for help as he has

Leif:

relevant experience.

Steve:

It's a good suggestion. You know? It is. It is.

Steve:

Chuck is the guy that'll handle this kind of shady

Steve:

stuff.

Leif:

He would sleep with another woman at a bank. Yeah.

Steve:

Just to get. Dan did. Yes. And I like a Dan. Chuck

Steve:

team up, too, so I wasn't mad about that. It's

Steve:

funny for. For. I think this episode was terrible

Steve:

for, like, uh, a lot in a large part, but there's

Steve:

a lot of stuff that I liked that they attempted.

Leif:

You know, the dialogue is really good.

Steve:

Yeah. The dialog is really good. The plot is just.

Steve:

What are we doing here?

Leif:

Max and Ivy are prepping for their respective

Leif:

days. Max asks, uh, how his cooking is, and Ivy

Leif:

wants to know which clogs make her look more like

Leif:

a trustafarian. Max mentions a potential

Leif:

opportunity in Portland if they were to move

Leif:

again.

Steve:

I like Max. I think Max is a good guy. I think

Steve:

he's a sweet guy. I think he's really taking care

Steve:

of Ivy.

Leif:

He should just go to Portland.

Steve:

But he should just go to Portland.

Leif:

Yeah. Um, Stay away from these toxic people.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Max, you. She's doing you a favor by

Steve:

the end of this. But. But he was. He the. In two

Steve:

episodes, he's probably one of the most upstanding

Steve:

men we've seen on Gossip Girl.

Leif:

Just right away, they will chew you you up and

Leif:

turn you into a shell. The man.

Steve:

Yep. Yep. If you stay with them, you will be

Steve:

accosting. Diplomat drug dealers. And. And yeah.

Steve:

Does I be. Ever tell you to call her someone else?

Steve:

Does Ivy ever tell you to call her Serena? It's

Steve:

not as creepy now. We're not cool.

Leif:

So that.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Louis explains the feast of assumption to Blair.

Leif:

She is worried that she won't like his sister

Leif:

Beatrice, who just then gets off the elevator and

Leif:

greets the happy couple. Beatrice's perfume

Leif:

triggers Blair's morning sickness.

Steve:

Yep. Because everything is going to trigger

Steve:

Blair's morning sickness. And, um, to a degree,

Steve:

yes. This is something that happens. Right. I was

Steve:

with somebody. I was the father to three

Steve:

pregnancies, and my ex wife threw up one time in

Steve:

three pregnancies. So, of course, everyone reacts

Steve:

differently. She felt sick every morning when she

Steve:

woke up every day for all nine for the first

Steve:

trimester of all three pregnancies. Like that.

Steve:

That was true. But, uh, and again, like, it is a

Steve:

different experience for everybody, but just to

Steve:

try to drive this home. And also, I think it was.

Steve:

I think a lot of this was to repurpose the bulimia

Steve:

from season one and kind of remind us we have

Steve:

little reminders here and there about it. And I

Steve:

felt like they really wanted to do a reminder

Steve:

slash public service announcement because they.

Steve:

They do this sometimes where, like, the STD thing

Steve:

with Juliet, like, well, you should get tested,

Steve:

and men don't show as often as. You know, they do

Steve:

these PSA sort of episodes. I feel like they

Steve:

really missed the mark on this one in a lot of the

Steve:

execution.

Leif:

Yeah. Because they kind of just made the bloomy a

Leif:

joke.

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. And other things that I'll get to

Steve:

later. But, yes, it became a punchline, uh,

Steve:

instead of a serious disease. Except for the one

Steve:

time they mentioned that it's a serious disease.

Leif:

Dan, thank you very much.

Steve:

Yes. Well, Beatrice says it too. Beatrice does

Steve:

say, um, to Louis, it's a. It's a horrible

Steve:

disease. Yeah. But she's doing it out of judgment

Steve:

of Blair and her character and trying to get. And

Steve:

trying to throw. Yeah, trying. Yeah. She has

Steve:

ulterior motives.

Leif:

Ivy and Serena are at a restaurant, and Ivy

Leif:

explains that Carol doesn't know that she's in la.

Leif:

Ivy can't completely hide the shock at the fact

Leif:

that Serena announces she's staying in la.

Steve:

Ivy being, like, on top of her lies. I'm going to

Steve:

give it to her that Ivy's pretty smart. You know,

Steve:

she pulled off that first scheme and flawlessly,

Steve:

you know, flawless victory when she came. When she

Steve:

came back to Florida and Carol gave her the money.

Steve:

Now when she's caught and she's able to just quick

Steve:

fire off these like, uh, all these reasons why

Steve:

everything is happening. Don't. Why she. Why you

Steve:

shouldn't call my mom. Why she cut me off again.

Steve:

She's just on top of it. I know that's not yet,

Steve:

but she's just on top of it all the time. And I

Steve:

like that for her character that they actually.

Steve:

They are.

Leif:

It's very reminiscent of an early Jetty.

Steve:

Yes. I was just going to say they are trying to

Steve:

bring someone in with Jenny's level of scheming

Steve:

and.

Leif:

Reactionary scheming.

Steve:

Yes, reactionary scheming. That you could never

Steve:

get Jenny for more than 30 seconds. You know, when

Steve:

they locked her in the. The Waldorf store, you

Steve:

remember, and she was. And she snuck her way out

Steve:

of that. And it's that level of wit.

Leif:

Back in New York, Blair is being polite and trying

Leif:

to choke down some food and feigns happiness. When

Leif:

Beatric announces she is extending her stay to get

Leif:

to know Blair better. A nauseous Blair excuses

Leif:

herself.

Steve:

Okay, so here's the other thing about the morning

Steve:

sickness throughout this episode. And again, this

Steve:

is me personally. I know I'm not like other people

Steve:

all the time, but if I feel like I'm going to be

Steve:

sick, I've got like seconds to get somewhere. But

Steve:

it's not like, oh man, I think I'm going to throw

Steve:

up in the next 20 minutes. I better meander my way

Steve:

to a bathroom which.

Leif:

Well, Steve, you're not nearly the control freak

Leif:

that Blair Waldo does.

Steve:

You will stay in my stomach until I say so.

Leif:

You have no trouble using mind authoring

Leif:

substances.

Steve:

That is also true. That relieve nausea.

Leif:

You're much more of a Nate than a Blair.

Steve:

Yeah, that's sadly true. Elizabeth Hurley. Um,

Steve:

what you doing?

Leif:

So Gossip Girl's little end act quip kind of goes

Leif:

over the last two scenes and this is what she

Leif:

says. They say misery loves company, but sometimes

Leif:

it's the company that makes you miserable. But

Leif:

nothing's worse than company that overstays their

Leif:

welcome. Good luck, Bea. Have fun being the

Leif:

hostess with the mostest. We move into Act 2. As

Leif:

she walks out of the restaurant with Ivy, Serena

Leif:

is explaining that she is taking a semester off

Leif:

from Columbia to see how the job goes. Her only

Leif:

problem is living with Cece isn't conducive to a

Leif:

normal work schedule and suggests her and Ivy get

Leif:

a place together.

Steve:

Yeah, fun Rhodes women live together when they're

Steve:

in California. It's tradition.

Leif:

Throwback to Lillian.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, I Like that. I love the little

Steve:

references to Cece that her bridge game got

Steve:

violent at 2:00am

Leif:

uh. Oh, boy. Too much gin.

Steve:

Can you imagine the gin at that function? They

Steve:

just probably have a tanker. A bar. It's just a

Steve:

wall of just gallon bottles.

Leif:

They probably have something much nicer than

Leif:

tanker.

Steve:

Yeah, I know, but I wouldn't want it. I love me

Steve:

some tanker Ray. That's my drink is a Tanqueray on

Steve:

the rocks. I got that from my dad. It's one of the

Steve:

things that I still appreciate that I got from my

Steve:

dad.

Leif:

Dan is using the Gossip Girl spotted map to stalk

Leif:

Chuck and finds him paying two large men to fight

Leif:

him. When Dan threatens to call the cops, the guys

Leif:

take off. Dan spots Chuck's bruises and becomes

Leif:

concerned, but Chuck just walks away.

Steve:

So we see Chuck on the video walking through this.

Steve:

Is that.

Leif:

That's later.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Okay, you're right. Um, my bad. This is

Steve:

just him. Yeah.

Leif:

Ah. He just uses the spotted map, finds him in the

Leif:

alley during the day.

Steve:

Yeah. And gets there and the two. Are the two guys

Steve:

shoving him at this point.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

And when they hear cots, they're like, we didn't

Leif:

sign up for this. And they run off.

Steve:

Yeah. They leave. And Chuck is annoyed. And Dan

Steve:

makes all of the assumptions as to. You're just

Steve:

trying to get Blair's attention again, which

Steve:

validates all of. All of Dan's assumptions are

Steve:

completely valid.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

I mean, if anyone has chronicled all of these

Steve:

behaviors for the past four years, it's Dan. And

Steve:

we know he has.

Leif:

In a book at the Empire, Nate is making pot

Leif:

brownies and still trying to track down the woman

Leif:

from la. Chuck returns home followed by a still

Leif:

concerned Dan. He finds Nate and explains the

Leif:

situation with Chuck and thinks it's some kind of

Leif:

scheme to get Blair's attention. Nate tells Chuck

Leif:

he is going to call a doctor to check him out.

Leif:

Chuck agrees without a fuss while grabbing a pot

Leif:

brownie.

Steve:

What a waste of pot the way that you just burnt

Steve:

those brownies, too. Like, how do you burn store

Steve:

box brownies, Nate? Come on. Come on, Nate. Of

Steve:

course I don't.

Leif:

They didn't look burnt when he took them out.

Steve:

Yeah, and then they were fine when he actually

Steve:

took them out. I, uh. Yeah, my daughter recently

Steve:

came to me and was like, can we order some brownie

Steve:

mix? And I was like, we don't do mix in this

Steve:

house. I make amazing brownies if anyone's

Steve:

curious, weed or otherwise. But usually, uh, my

Steve:

edibles aren't brownies. I usually make Meals. I

Steve:

usually infuse other stuff, like to make, uh, like

Steve:

Mac and cheese.

Leif:

Blair and Beatrice are bonding while walking

Leif:

around the park. Beatrice explains about how many

Leif:

guardrails are going to be around her life as the

Leif:

concert to the ruling prince. She also explains

Leif:

that her own brief time in the spotlight only

Leif:

showed her that she didn't want it. Blair once

Leif:

again excuses herself at the smell of a food cart.

Steve:

Yeah. Um, and I guess this is the. Yeah, this is

Steve:

when Beatrice first starts finding her angle. I'd

Steve:

say when she sees her run off.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

And starts thinking at this point that she has a

Steve:

drug problem.

Leif:

Ivy and Serena are looking at the perfect

Leif:

apartment. But Ivy keeps making excuses why they

Leif:

shouldn't take it. Serena strong harms her into

Leif:

not only taking the apartment, but using one of

Leif:

her stolen checks for the down payment.

Steve:

That it was all. It was so Serena of her, you

Steve:

know, to just. What does this mean? You don't want

Steve:

to live with me? With her pouty face that she puts

Steve:

on and it's like, no, she will just strong arm her

Steve:

way into anything she wants. And, and why not? I

Steve:

mean, it's how she's lived her life. Yeah. And,

Steve:

and, and also, like, I'm, um, not mad at her about

Steve:

it because Serena is not self aware enough to know

Steve:

what she's doing. She's just trying to live with

Steve:

her cousin in this beautiful fucking house on the

Steve:

beach in la. Yeah, that's probably the rent. There

Steve:

is probably a million dollars to start. You know,

Leif:

not cheap.

Steve:

No, not cheap. And you also know that Serena

Steve:

probably is the one paying like, uh, you know, oh,

Steve:

Charlie, you can just live here. You know, I'm

Steve:

just gonna get a two bedroom. I don't expect you

Steve:

to chip in much. I'm fine. But although, except

Steve:

for the deposit here.

Leif:

Well, from Suzerina's perspective, she, Charlie,

Leif:

slash Ivy has tons of money. Exactly the same

Leif:

amount of money she has.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Even more because she hasn't been

Steve:

spending it.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Uh, since she turned 18.

Leif:

After the doctor finishes checking up Chuck, he

Leif:

explains to Nate that Chuck needs to stop taking

Leif:

drugs and rest as his injuries are quite serious.

Leif:

Yeah, you should see his medicine cabinet. I'm

Leif:

just kidding. I was just kidding.

Steve:

I love how he was like, like cracking jokes and

Steve:

like, oh, wait, this is okay. This is serious. Uh,

Steve:

no. Nate.

Leif:

Beatrice and Blair return to the Waldorf apartment

Leif:

and Blair once again excuses herself. Dorota tries

Leif:

to usher Beatrice back into the elevator, but the

Leif:

princess stops and accuses Blair of having a drug

Leif:

problem. When Dorota Suggests it's just a

Leif:

sensitive stomach. Beatrice immediately jumps to

Leif:

bulimia. Dorota panics when she realizes she she

Leif:

has said too much and runs off to make a tuna

Leif:

melt. And Beatrice calls Louis and leaves a quick

Leif:

message.

Steve:

I love how it is the most, like, vomit inducing

Steve:

food that she's like, no, no. I will prove to you

Steve:

that she's fine. I'll make a tuna melt. That she

Steve:

also knows Blair wouldn't eat right now. In with

Steve:

everything that's going on forever or ever.

Leif:

We move into Act 3. Nate finds Diana leaving his

Leif:

mom's house and is excited, thinking she was there

Leif:

looking for him, but soon disappointed to learn

Leif:

she was there trying to get interview. An

Leif:

interview with Anne for her newspaper. Nate still

Leif:

fails to get her name.

Steve:

Yeah, she's just at my house now. It's convenient,

Steve:

Nate. It's really convenient.

Leif:

Yeah, but that's just how easy Nate's life is,

Leif:

though.

Steve:

Yeah, it really is. It really is.

Leif:

He has no reason to be suspicious because his life

Leif:

normally is that easy.

Steve:

Yeah. Oh, you did fly across the country to find

Steve:

me. Awesome. I knew I was that awesome because

Leif:

he's got Stab in it. Oh, Nate.

Steve:

Oh, sweet, sweet Nate.

Leif:

Walking the streets, Beatrice is telling Louis

Leif:

about Blair's bulimia. But he says that Blair

Leif:

already told him all about her old problem.

Leif:

Beatrice insists the problem has resurfaced.

Steve:

Um, it's funny, both Dorota and Louis mentioned it

Steve:

being high school and. Okay, yeah, I guess we

Steve:

started with them in junior year, so I guess it

Steve:

was probably like freshman sophomore year, because

Steve:

I really got the impression that it was well under

Steve:

control, that it was that sort of a year before

Steve:

Thanksgiving was when it was bad. Right. Like,

Steve:

there's indications that the Thanksgiving she was

Steve:

in recovery.

Leif:

Like, she basically started a recovery, uh, right

Leif:

before Thanksgiving of a year before the show

Leif:

started.

Steve:

Exactly. Yeah. That's what I was getting at. That

Steve:

was what was sort of indicated all along. So I

Steve:

guess that would have been ninth grade or tenth

Steve:

grade. Yeah. So. Okay, well, and. And probably

Steve:

ninth and tenth grade, if you think about it.

Steve:

Like, it would probably start in ninth grade if

Steve:

it's getting. If, uh, she's going into treatment.

Steve:

The beginning of 10th grade.

Leif:

We don't really know how long it lasted.

Steve:

It could have been years. That's what, um, the.

Steve:

That's kind of what I was trying to say is that

Steve:

this probably went on longer than just high

Steve:

school.

Leif:

I think they say teenage, not high school. I know

Leif:

that's what Dorota says.

Steve:

I. I think they both. I Think that Louie says high

Steve:

school. I think Dorota says teenage. I think Louie

Steve:

says high school.

Leif:

Ivy calls the realtor, wanting to cancel the check

Leif:

she wrote for the apartment, only to learn that it

Leif:

has already been denied and given back to Serena.

Steve:

Um, dope. Should have called that quicker. Yeah,

Steve:

but also, they walked out of there and were like,

Steve:

okay, I need you to call this check in for me.

Steve:

They don't even have mobile deposit yet. How'd

Steve:

they get the check cashed that fast?

Leif:

Lair and derota are doing some pregnancy botting,

Leif:

and for once, a character is aware enough not to

Leif:

spill the beans with potential lurkers around

Leif:

every corner. Good thing, too, because Louie pops

Leif:

in to check on Blair with Beatrice in tow. They

Leif:

let her know that they moved the Feast of

Leif:

Assumption to New York so Blair could experience

Leif:

it. Blair is not too excited about the thought of

Leif:

all that rich food.

Steve:

Yeah, we just moved this whole feast across the

Steve:

ocean today for you to be there instead. They were

Steve:

supposed to go back to Monaco for this?

Leif:

Yes. Uh, I mean, I'm not so worried about moving

Leif:

the feast, because really, that's just cooking

Leif:

food in a different spot. And also, it's a

Leif:

Catholic tradition, so they probably were doing it

Leif:

anyways.

Steve:

They probably were doing it anyway. But now, what

Steve:

about the people that you had invited? All the

Steve:

people that are attending the one that you're

Steve:

supposed to be at?

Leif:

They probably still have that too.

Steve:

Right? I'm just saying.

Leif:

The part I'm more concerned about is. We know they

Leif:

already play fast and loose with travel around New

Leif:

York City, but now they're also. They're like.

Leif:

They're like, uh. They're coming from Monaco to

Leif:

New York and then back. Monaco in one day.

Steve:

Yeah, exactly. That They're. That they just flew

Steve:

in this morning. But also, if they just decide now

Steve:

that they're moving it to tonight. Yeah, that

Steve:

priest has to fly from Monaco and be here by the

Steve:

next scene or at least three scenes from now.

Leif:

Dan returns to the Empire to ask for Chuck's help,

Leif:

but quickly realizes that Chuck might need his

Leif:

help more. Dan fails to stop Chuck from leaving or

Leif:

from the burn Chuck gave him on his way out the

Leif:

door. I'm talking about full carnal knowledge.

Steve:

Yeah. Uh, yeah.

Leif:

It hurts, doesn't it?

Steve:

I wish I could feel it. That was so good. I

Steve:

laughed so hard at that. And, uh, again, I'm gonna

Steve:

say this was one of Ed's better episodes. I felt.

Leif:

Well, parts of it.

Steve:

Yeah.

Leif:

Some of it was really bad. Like the fighting

Leif:

scenes where he's whispering. Acting was really

Leif:

bad.

Steve:

I kind of liked it for what it was. That. Like

Steve:

that he's trying to pretend like he's not feeling

Steve:

any of this. And Batman whispering his way through

Steve:

everything because the plot was so dumb. I liked

Steve:

how he did it, uh, but especially that look on his

Steve:

face. Wish I could feel it as the elevator door

Steve:

closed was just.

Leif:

Ah. Once again, Gossip Girl's quip is split over

Leif:

the final two scenes of the act. And she has this

Leif:

to say. Lets hope Bea's first feast of assumption

Leif:

doesn't end in damnation. A kiss is just a kiss.

Leif:

Poor lonely boy. Even on the outer burrows of

Leif:

love. We move into Act 4. Ivy returns to the

Leif:

restaurant where, as Max points out, she was fired

Leif:

from. She tells him she wants to go to Portland

Leif:

with him and convinces him to pay, pack their bags

Leif:

and leave tonight.

Steve:

Ivy, it's a good instinct. It's a good instinct to

Steve:

just pack up and get out of here and just

Steve:

disappear again. And let Serena just think that

Steve:

you hate her.

Leif:

Yeah, just.

Steve:

Just let her. You're better off if Serena thinks

Steve:

you just hate her and don't want anything to do

Steve:

with her.

Leif:

Mhm.

Steve:

Especially if Cece gets that shit unlocked for

Steve:

you.

Leif:

At the feast, Blair is fighting her nausea in

Leif:

front of Beatrice and Louie. Blair is introduced

Leif:

to Father Cavalier, the priest that will marry

Leif:

them. Blair sees Dan across the church like a sign

Leif:

from God and excuses herself to go talk to him.

Leif:

Louis and Beatrice continue to argue over Blair's

Leif:

condition.

Steve:

Her line when she sees Dan and says, thank you

Steve:

very much, I will never question the paternity of

Steve:

your son again. That line, like, we know that

Steve:

Blair doesn't come across as very religious. We

Steve:

know that she, you know, she's also expressed many

Steve:

liberal views on the show. And to have her come

Steve:

out and, uh, say that she's always questioned the

Steve:

paternity of Mary's son, I think is hilarious.

Steve:

Yeah, I think that's the first step in

Steve:

deconstruction.

Leif:

Blair ignores what Dan is trying to tell her about

Leif:

Chuck and grabs his hand and tells him to walk

Leif:

with her.

Steve:

Yep, and holds his hand as they're walking too,

Steve:

which I thought was interesting. Dan, who's also

Steve:

at this, uh, in a jeans and a T shirt, like, walks

Steve:

in wearing what I would wear to a friend's house.

Leif:

Yes, well, as we find out later, they were about

Leif:

to welcome the homeless in as well.

Steve:

Yes. Yes, that is true.

Leif:

Nate found Diana's card and finally knows her

Leif:

name. He has lured her back to the Archibald

Leif:

townhouse. He attempts to trade an interview with

Leif:

his mother for sex with Diana, who takes him up on

Leif:

the offer. Right. In broad daylight.

Steve:

Like. Right. Like you're just in a vestibule.

Leif:

Yes.

Steve:

And. And, like. And Nate's shirts off. Like, it's

Steve:

not even, like, quickie pants, you know, waist

Steve:

down, outside sex. It's, like, full on. Taking

Steve:

shirts off and banging outside because of his

Steve:

stamina. And so.

Leif:

Yeah. Like a long session, presumably.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. Because it's an hour.

Leif:

Yeah, yeah. They're gonna go out for, like, so

Leif:

they probably got fully naked.

Steve:

Yeah. Uh, yeah, right there. For an hour. And when

Steve:

he's like. And also.

Leif:

But his tout houses, family tower houses are right

Leif:

there. Yeah, Just go inside, Nate.

Steve:

Come on. Yeah. Or go, I don't know, anywhere you

Steve:

want to. You live at a hotel m. Where you, you

Steve:

know, you. You have options, Nate. And you chose

Steve:

the vestibule. And also just Nate. How handsy he

Steve:

got with her when she showed up. And he's like,

Steve:

got his hands on her waist, like, bruh. Like, this

Steve:

is not your girlfriend. Uh, Nate usually isn't. I

Steve:

don't want to. It's not that he was aggressive in

Steve:

terms of, like, um, angry aggression, but he was

Steve:

aggressive in his.

Leif:

Very forward.

Steve:

Yeah, very forward and very handsy.

Leif:

But because it's Nate, it works.

Steve:

Yeah, he's got those dreamy blue eyes he m. Was

Steve:

charming in. You know, there's that.

Leif:

Ivy finds Serena waiting for her outside her

Leif:

apartment. Serena says she's on tour, and of

Leif:

course, Ivy assumes the worst.

Steve:

Oh, shit. Oh, shit. I'm busted. I'm busted. How do

Steve:

I get out of this? But Serena is too stupid, as.

Leif:

As we soon find out.

Steve:

Yes.

Leif:

But first, Blair barges into the ladies room with

Leif:

her security detail, AKA Dan, and kicks everyone

Leif:

out. Blaire says he has her forgiveness if he

Leif:

guards the door. Dan drops the you slept with

Leif:

Chuck bomb, but Blair once again tells him to

Leif:

guard the door. As she heads for the stall, Dan

Leif:

hears Blair being sick and then goes and tells

Leif:

Beatrice before telling her to leave. Dan, too, is

Leif:

worried Blair's bulimia has resurfaced. However,

Leif:

Blaire eventually yields and admits she is

Leif:

pregnant just in time for Beatrice to come back in

Leif:

and overhear.

Steve:

Yeah, it's funny that Dan also tells the one

Steve:

person not to tell. Oh, she's throwing up right

Steve:

now. Princess is puking. And also the amount of

Steve:

conversation that Blair is able to have before

Steve:

throwing up. Uh, and another point that I meant to

Steve:

bring up right before she got sick, the catalyst

Steve:

for her getting sick was Beatrice feeding her the

Steve:

babajon. The Babajon. When we talked about bulimia

Steve:

being a punchline in this, Beatrice moved a feast

Steve:

to put Blair in front of all of this food to shove

Steve:

something in her face to see if she would throw it

Steve:

up. So to out this person and their medical

Steve:

issues, I'm going to force food into their face.

Steve:

It was awful. Like, it's just not how to treat

Steve:

people.

Leif:

Steve, would you play the Game of Thrones?

Steve:

Win or you die. You win or you die. At, uh.

Steve:

Touche. Touche, Littlefinger. Touche. That was.

Leif:

Cersei said that.

Steve:

Oh, was it?

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

I thought it was Littlefinger.

Leif:

This is what Gossip Girl has to say. While one

Leif:

mother's life leads her to heaven, another is

Leif:

going straight to hell in a Moses basket. We move

Leif:

into Act 5. Outside the bathroom, Blair chases

Leif:

down Beatrice and tells her that she is going to

Leif:

tell Louis as soon as she knew the pregnancy was

Leif:

okay. Louie only overhears part of the

Leif:

conversation, but surprises. Beatrice surprisingly

Leif:

covers for Blair. Dan sees a blast about Chuck

Leif:

walking around a bad neighborhood and says he has

Leif:

to go, but promises not to say anything about

Leif:

Blair being preggers.

Steve:

So first, Beatrice covering for Blair with letting

Steve:

the homeless people in to eat, which I loved how

Steve:

she was covering for Blair, which immediately you

Steve:

kind of get the sense she's covering for Blair for

Steve:

her own good, that she doesn't think being

Steve:

pregnant is the scandal that bulimia would be. I

Steve:

kind of clocked that right when that happened. The

Steve:

other part of this was, oh, and also Blair's

Steve:

reaction to feeding them, um, oh, and serve them.

Steve:

Not to eat with them, but to serve them with, uh,

Steve:

gloves on. With gloves on. So this is where the

Steve:

close up of Chuck walking through the city to go

Steve:

to this bad neighborhood. You're looking at it on

Steve:

a phone, right? Am I to believe that that

Steve:

perfectly framed shot was taken by someone's cell

Steve:

phone and then blasted the Gossip Girl like it

Steve:

was. It wasn't even a portrait image.

Leif:

Right.

Steve:

Even. Even then, cell phone footage either would

Steve:

have been a, uh, closer to a square, or it would

Steve:

have been a more portrait image. And this is just

Steve:

Chuck perfectly framed with a close up, no less,

Steve:

walking through the city. I thought that was

Steve:

really just one of those funny things about the

Steve:

show

Leif:

where it's like, we had iPhones already at this

Leif:

point.

Steve:

We had iPhones. Uh, well, that's my point is that

Steve:

the iPhones and stuff, for Chuck not to notice

Steve:

somebody shooting that, they probably would have

Steve:

had to be across the street, right? Yeah.

Leif:

I mean, well, I just took it that Chuck Just

Leif:

doesn't care because he's used to people taking

Leif:

pictures of them.

Steve:

Sure. That, too. I just felt like it was the. The

Steve:

way that the camera angle moved and then stayed

Steve:

still when he walked past. It just felt so shot,

Steve:

which I know it is, but I guess my feeling is use

Steve:

an iPhone to shoot that. Use the technology you're

Steve:

trying to show. You have to make me feel a little

Steve:

more immersed. And maybe nobody watching in 2011

Steve:

cared. I just feel like looking back, it feels.

Steve:

Come on, put the effort in, guys.

Leif:

Serena naturally assumes Carol has cut Ivy off

Leif:

from the trust fund again, and not that she is an

Leif:

actress paid by her aunt to impersonate her

Leif:

cousin. She tells Ivy that she'll make sure CeCe

Leif:

unlocks her trust fund in a way that won't let

Leif:

Carol know about it.

Steve:

Something in this episode made me sad. It was the

Steve:

realization that CeCe would do that for Ivy,

Steve:

because CeCe doesn't know her grandchild, because

Steve:

CeCe thought that Ivy, along with everybody else,

Steve:

Cici, was there. So Cece also is duped into

Steve:

thinking that Ivy is Charlie. And that made me sad

Steve:

that. That she kept her kid that far away from her

Steve:

mom that she couldn't recognize her. And I felt

Steve:

for cece in that.

Leif:

That leads me into my question I have for you.

Leif:

What happened to the real Charlie and will we ever

Leif:

meet her?

Steve:

So I also thought about that. Right. I've assumed

Steve:

the real Charlie is in Florida, not knowing that

Steve:

her mom has her trust fund. And I do think we'll

Steve:

meet her at some point. I feel like we have to for

Steve:

the reveal. Right. There's the chance that she, I

Steve:

don't know, died or something, and that Caroline

Steve:

didn't want to let anyone know and just took the

Steve:

money. But Charlie wasn't even expected to be in

Steve:

that. In the city during the time that Caroline

Steve:

visited. So the whole thing, I, uh, really felt

Steve:

that Caroline just kept Charlie that far from the

Steve:

family. There's also the chance maybe. Maybe she

Steve:

lied about having a kid just so that she could one

Steve:

day get the trust fund for that kid. I think

Steve:

that's a little bit more of a stretch, but.

Leif:

Well, Serena does mention at one point that they

Leif:

spent time together on a yacht when they were

Leif:

younger.

Steve:

You're right. You're right. They have met as kids,

Steve:

too. So, yeah, Mike, I do fully believe that

Steve:

she'll show up. If she's alive.

Leif:

Dan finds Chuck in a darkened alley, once again

Leif:

being, uh, roughed up by the guys from earlier.

Leif:

Dan catches a rabbit punch when he tries to Step

Leif:

in, but eventually convinces Chuck to call them

Leif:

off. After they leave, Chuck explains that he

Leif:

feels nothing no matter what he does.

Steve:

The punch on Dan was hilarious. The way that Dan

Steve:

walks in is like, bam. He's like, yo, I'm not a

Steve:

part of this. Like, with his bloody lip. Like,

Steve:

dude. Uh. And it's not that Dan's afraid to throw

Steve:

a punch, right? Like, we've seen Dan for Chuck.

Steve:

We've seen him defend Chuck's honor before. So it

Steve:

was really funny that he just walks up and takes

Steve:

this punch, is like, dude. And they're like, oh,

Steve:

my B. He said no one should interrupt us this

Steve:

time. That's your safe word. Stop it.

Leif:

I'm not trying to kill myself. Nate and Diana are

Leif:

wrapping up their date, and I guess Nate's story

Leif:

of how he convinced his mom to do an article

Leif:

impressed her enough to offer him a job. Nate is a

Leif:

little hesitant to go against his family again,

Leif:

but how can he say no when she pulls him in for

Leif:

the kiss?

Steve:

So I was thinking last week that it was the family

Steve:

bringing her in. Right? I had said that I. That it

Steve:

seemed like a grandfather Ian thing to do to send

Steve:

a honeypot to bring Nate back to the family, but

Steve:

now she is. The family has this thing that they

Steve:

want him to do, and she's taking him away from

Steve:

that. So now his grandfather trying to pull him

Steve:

away from Ann. Or is there some other thing? Or. I

Steve:

mean, the other side of it is. Is it Howie? Is

Steve:

Howie the one trying to get Nate away from the,

Steve:

uh, Vanderbilts? So is Howie trying to get Nate

Steve:

away from the Vanderbilts? Is now more of where

Steve:

I'm leaning on it.

Leif:

Howie have that kind of power?

Steve:

Howie has that kind of charisma. Right? Howie has.

Steve:

I know we don't see it, but I believe we're

Steve:

supposed to believe it. He's this smooth talker

Steve:

who is easily led and easily used, but he does

Steve:

have that gift of gab we've seen. Uh, it's usually

Steve:

because it's going to get him in trouble, but he

Steve:

has, you know, shown that a little bit. So I'm

Steve:

wondering if it is a Howie thing and not a

Steve:

grandfather thing, because I can't think of who

Steve:

else would be trying to other than unless they

Steve:

tried to bring back the. What's the family that

Steve:

they were feuding with?

Leif:

Buckley's.

Steve:

The Buckleys. So unless they're trying to bring

Steve:

the Buckleys back into this, which I kind of felt

Steve:

like that was done with Carter, I don't know.

Steve:

Maybe they're Trying to bring the Buckleys back

Steve:

into it. But I was thrown by this, by him going to

Steve:

work for her. Not m surprised, just thrown from my

Steve:

prediction.

Leif:

Can we also take a moment to chuckle at the fact

Leif:

that she is using a newspaper as the cornerstone

Leif:

for her new media empire in 2011? Not exactly

Leif:

forward thinking.

Steve:

Yeah. And from here, I'm going to do all of these

Steve:

other things for frame of reference. When I moved

Steve:

back to Pennsylvania from California, I was

Steve:

offered a job at. I was offered two jobs. One

Steve:

selling used. Selling cars at a, uh, dealership in

Steve:

Jersey, and the other selling newspaper ads in

Steve:

Bucks county for the Courier Times. And that is

Steve:

the job I went with because it was more in line

Steve:

with my training as an English teacher. I was

Steve:

like, okay, if I work for this newspaper company,

Steve:

maybe I can find another avenue while I'm in

Steve:

there. And let me tell you, in 2006, trying to

Steve:

sell newspaper ads was already near impossible.

Steve:

And the only success that I really had was I was.

Steve:

It was a midterm year. There were midterm

Steve:

elections happening, and I was only allowed to

Steve:

sell advertisements to Republican candidates. And

Steve:

my, uh, sales partner was only allowed to sell to

Steve:

Democratic candidates. And those were the only

Steve:

people that I was selling a lot of ads to. I would

Steve:

sell, like, here and there. Like, I occasionally

Steve:

get one run, or I had a list of people who were

Steve:

regular clients that I could pop into and. And get

Steve:

them, and they would just do their regular monthly

Steve:

sales. But the large pull was just from

Steve:

politicians that knew that the only people reading

Steve:

the newspaper were the old folks who were gonna

Steve:

vote.

Leif:

Fair enough.

Steve:

Yeah. I was with that job for, like, three or four

Steve:

months because it just. You could smell the death

Steve:

of the print media in the air. And I believe they

Steve:

might still be around in some fashion still

Steve:

printing papers, but, man, did it feel ridiculous.

Leif:

Those boomers haven't died off yet.

Steve:

Nope. Nope. I. Nope.

Leif:

They're hanging on for dear life.

Steve:

Nope. Just talked to mom yesterday. Love you, mom.

Steve:

Please keep hanging on for dear life, Mom. And my

Steve:

dad isn't going to die. I just think one day he is

Steve:

going to crumble into dust and blow into the wind.

Leif:

We go into the final break with this Gossip Girl

Leif:

quip. Watch out, Nate. Looks like sex play may not

Leif:

be the only game you're a pawn in. We move into

Leif:

the epilogue. Back at the Empire. Dan has found a

Leif:

WebMD diagnosis for Chuck's condition. Dan says

Leif:

treatment involves making the patient try to feel

Leif:

something again, but suggests trying for something

Leif:

a little happier than pain. Dan then explains the

Leif:

situation in his book. Chuck agrees to help, and

Leif:

we get a Charlie Trout reference.

Steve:

I really loved this scene, especially because of

Steve:

that bit, the first part about the diagnosing.

Steve:

And, hey, trying to feel something good. It was

Steve:

nice.

Steve:

It was a good.

Steve:

Because it's.

Leif:

I could tickle you, Steve.

Steve:

Okay, just imagine if Chuck was like, okay, let's

Steve:

try it. I liked that Dan was forthcoming about the

Steve:

book. Hey, I wrote a book. It's about all of us,

Steve:

and it's not good if it gets out to anyone. And

Steve:

Chuck immediately is like, the return of Charlie

Steve:

Trout. And he's like, yeah, pretty much. I like

Steve:

the honesty, and I like that it's not. It's not a

Steve:

matter of, you can't know I did this thing. It's.

Steve:

You don't want this thing to get out. And it does

Steve:

show that Dan is seeing these people as friends

Steve:

now that he has a, uh, more of a friendly

Steve:

relationship with them, including Chuck.

Leif:

Uh-huh.

Steve:

And it really felt like Dan is not ashamed of his

Steve:

work. He's not apologetic about it. He just knows

Steve:

that it could hurt people that are close to him.

Leif:

Yeah. Max returns to the apartment, excited to hit

Leif:

the road for Portland, but Ivy says she can't go

Leif:

with him. She gets a text from Serena and breaks

Leif:

up with him.

Steve:

Yeah, man, you dodged a bullet here, Max. Go to

Steve:

Portland, be a chef, and live your dream. You've

Steve:

got the angle here. You are dodging a bullet. And

Steve:

again, Max, congratulations on being one of the

Steve:

nicest men to guest star on Gossip Girl. It's like

Steve:

you and Cyrus.

Leif:

This is not the last time we see Max.

Steve:

Um, I'm really glad about that. I'm actually

Steve:

really happy about that, and I hope he does stay a

Steve:

good guy, but I, uh,

Leif:

should have left the fort. Should have went to

Leif:

Portland. Max.

Steve:

Should have went to Portland. Mac.

Leif:

In a limo, we see Beatrice is in cahoots with

Leif:

Father Cavalier and explains why she didn't reveal

Leif:

Blair's pregnancy. The two begin making out. Bon.

Steve:

Uh, yeah, Robin, both times we watch this. Priests

Steve:

aren't allowed to do that, are they?

Leif:

No.

Steve:

No, they are not. Oh. Is he really a priest?

Steve:

Probably. He's not allowed to do that, though.

Leif:

At least she's of consenting age.

Steve:

At least.

Steve:

Yeah.

Steve:

At least she is of a consenting age. And. And it

Steve:

is funny because, like, I did run through that.

Steve:

Like, is this a fake priest? No, because Louis

Steve:

knows him. Like, Louie had the whole conversation

Steve:

with him and knows who he is, so it doesn't seem

Steve:

like he's a fake priest. He's just a priest that

Steve:

goes outside the.

Leif:

He's just a dirty priest.

Steve:

He's just a dirty priest. I think we're just

Steve:

calling them priests.

Leif:

Yes, He's just a priest.

Steve:

He's just a priest.

Leif:

Ivy finds Serena waiting next to a limo

Leif:

downstairs. Also, it turns out Serena took the job

Leif:

without asking the location, which just happens to

Leif:

be in New York. How convenient.

Steve:

How convenient.

Leif:

Ivy can't help but accept when Serena invites her

Leif:

to go along for the ride. Walking that fine line,

Leif:

Ivy. Walking that line.

Steve:

Yeah. Uh, yeah, Ivy. This is where you dip this. I

Steve:

mean, because you could just. Right here.

Leif:

Hey, look, I like la.

Steve:

I like la. This is where I want to be. This is

Steve:

where I want to stay. But instead you're like,

Steve:

well, Serena's pressuring me to go to New York

Steve:

with her, so I might as well go live that life

Steve:

again. And, uh. Uh, yeah, you should have stayed

Steve:

in la, Charlie. Or just going to Portland.

Steve:

Portland.

Leif:

Yeah. Now that. Now that you have the trust fund.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah, now you got the. Now that it's easy.

Steve:

Unlock the trust fund, get. Write yourself one big

Steve:

check and disappear. Because, of course, you can't

Steve:

just live off the trust fund indefinitely, because

Steve:

eventually Carol will see it and be like, hey, why

Steve:

are you giving money to this stranger that I

Steve:

hired? So maybe she wouldn't. I don't know.

Leif:

Blair once again shows up at the loft as it's

Leif:

clear that Dan has become her safe harbor. Blair

Leif:

is in denial about the possibility of Chuck being

Leif:

the father, but Dan urges her to at least consider

Leif:

the possibility. When Blair is worried about

Leif:

losing everything, Dan does give the cliche, you

Leif:

still have me. She lays her head on his shoulder,

Leif:

giving him ample opportunity to sniff her hair.

Steve:

I had to catch myself because when he said. When

Steve:

he said it, I was like, aw, wait, no, you were

Steve:

just bashing Nate about this two episodes ago.

Steve:

It's just that I want them together that much.

Steve:

That much more.

Steve:

Uh, uh.

Steve:

Because, you know, she has to lose everything

Steve:

here, and that's going to leave her with Dan. The

Steve:

train is rolling, and so Dan's. You still have me.

Steve:

And I don't feel like that was. It wasn't Blair

Steve:

losing her family. It was Blair losing her love

Steve:

and this dream of being a princess, that. That's

Steve:

what she's worried about. And it's. I do feel like

Steve:

it's not quite the same as, like, my mom's dead

Steve:

and my dad is going to jail or my mom is dead and

Steve:

my dad is not a good guy, and I can't be Involved

Steve:

with him. I. I do feel like. Like it would have

Steve:

been more inappropriate for Nate to say it, but

Steve:

like I said, I had to check myself because I did

Steve:

get the awe for that. And then was like, oh, I

Steve:

criticized Nate for that also. There is this part

Steve:

of me, and maybe I'm just being ridiculous on it,

Steve:

that there was a moment that I thought that it

Steve:

could have been Dan's baby. Here's why. The piece

Steve:

that he got Louis not to publish, there's the

Steve:

whole the end of it thing that he and Rufus talked

Steve:

about. And Rufus was like, well, if that really.

Steve:

That's just creative license, right? And Dan was

Steve:

like, well, the writer never tells. Now there's

Steve:

indication that that was just a kiss. Dan said I

Steve:

was the last one to kiss her. There are a few

Steve:

times they talked about a kiss, but that

Steve:

interaction with Rufus. And there was another one

Steve:

in that episode that made me question if Dan and

Steve:

Blair slept together before Chuck. Ah, at the end

Steve:

of the summer or at the. Or I mean, at the

Steve:

beginning of the summer before everything really

Steve:

took off with her and Louie. So. But Dan never

Steve:

questions, is it mine? Which is what made me

Steve:

think, okay, I'm off base here. Because if

Steve:

anything, Dan would be the one to be like, it, uh,

Steve:

could also be me, but he never does that.

Leif:

And also, I think Blair is not treating him as a

Leif:

sexual person at all. She's treating him like a

Leif:

friend.

Steve:

She is. Well, that's how she's treating him.

Leif:

I'm just talking about sensitive breasts and all

Leif:

that.

Steve:

Yeah, no, yeah, completely. Almost a Serena stand

Steve:

in.

Leif:

Yeah.

Steve:

Only one that she will just cuddle with, you know,

Steve:

so.

Leif:

Well, she's cuddled with Serena before, too.

Steve:

She has. She has. You're right. Yeah.

Leif:

And this is what Gossip Girl says as the episode

Leif:

ends. How well do any of us really know each

Leif:

other? Uh, even families have their secrets. They

Leif:

say blood is thicker than water, but it's also a

Leif:

lot harder to clean up when it spills. Maybe it's

Leif:

not the blood bonds that make us a family. Perhaps

Leif:

it's the people who know our secrets and love us

Leif:

anyway so we can finally be ourselves. XOXO Gossip

Leif:

Girl. That is our episode. What is coming next?

Leif:

Um.

Steve:

Um, well, there's gonna be a pregnancy reveal to,

Steve:

uh, Louie and Chuck. So I think that this might be

Steve:

what makes Chuck feel something again. That, you

Steve:

know, he has hope that he has a baby on the way.

Steve:

So I think that's gonna also create a whole

Steve:

whirlwind. There's gonna be a time when Blair

Steve:

Finds out who the father is. So that's coming. I

Steve:

do feel like Blair is about to lose Chuck and

Steve:

Louie, and it's going to send her back to Dan. I

Steve:

think that they really. They've been playing up to

Steve:

that all along, and now the foreshadowing in this

Steve:

episode just really shoehorned that. I think Ivy

Steve:

is full cast now. And so how do you catch her and

Steve:

maintain her in here in the Upper east side

Steve:

without the money? So she either has to not get

Steve:

caught for a long time or completely revamp

Steve:

herself. So I'm, um, feeling like she's just not

Steve:

going to be able to get caught. And that's going

Steve:

to bring Caroline in. The real Charlie.

Leif:

Carol.

Steve:

Carol. The real Carol and Charlie back into the

Steve:

fold at some point. Yeah. They're going to stay

Steve:

with Cece until they go back. So it seems like at

Steve:

least one more episode in California maybe, which

Steve:

is different than they usually do. Usually it's

Steve:

two episodes, and then they're back, like, so. I

Steve:

thought that was interesting. Yeah, I don't really

Steve:

have. I don't feel like there was much to go on in

Steve:

this episode either, though. But I think that. I

Steve:

think that we're coming to the end of Louis. I

Steve:

feel like. Yeah. Episode 11 is usually the Dan

Steve:

Serena. Right.

Leif:

Ten.

Steve:

Ten is usually Dan Serena. And the 11 is usually

Steve:

Thanksgiving. No, I guess that's different every

Steve:

time.

Leif:

Yeah. 11's not anything in particular.

Steve:

Okay. Okay. It's the 10th. Other than the fact

Steve:

that I know that that's when Vulture gave up. Yes.

Steve:

So, uh, it's funny because I'm trying to think of,

Steve:

like, what is coming.

Leif:

It's often the first episode back from the winter

Leif:

break.

Steve:

Oh. Following Christmas. Okay.

Leif:

Because there's usually, like, a month off from TV

Leif:

episodes.

Steve:

Yeah. Right.

Leif:

Any other predictions?

Steve:

I think that's it for today.

Leif:

Moving into the segments. Hello there. Peabody

Leif:

here. And this is the Wayback Machine for

Leif:

traveling through time.

Steve:

And this is my boy, German. Speak German.

Leif:

Hello. Goodbye. This week in fandom, we jumped

Leif:

into the Wayback Machine to travel to the

Leif:

Television without pity forums from 2011. Their

Leif:

overall impression of the episode. Mid Average.

Leif:

Okay.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Kind of dumb, I felt.

Leif:

Yes. Welcome to season five.

Steve:

Oh.

Leif:

Dan and Blair have to get together by the end of

Leif:

the season.

Steve:

Yes. By mid. Come on. By mid season. Stop it. Stop

Steve:

it. By mid season, Nate or himself.

Leif:

To an older woman again.

Steve:

Uh-huh.

Leif:

Really?

Steve:

At least this time it's more voluntary.

Leif:

What? Started out voluntary the first time, too.

Steve:

I guess it always does, doesn't it, Nate? You

Steve:

dumb, dumb bastard.

Leif:

Intrigued by Beatrice as a character.

Steve:

Sure.

Leif:

Kind of chaotic and fun.

Steve:

Yeah, I'm into it.

Leif:

Dan is a better friend to these people than they

Leif:

deserve. Why does not Nate not care about Chuck at

Leif:

all?

Steve:

Yes, yes. All facts.

Leif:

I, uh, mean, they're, like, literally together,

Leif:

and he doesn't even notice this. Like.

Steve:

Yeah, yeah. He is just totally, like, uh,

Steve:

oblivious. Yeah. I mean, because he's so obsessed

Steve:

with his own thing. And it's also just Chuck being

Steve:

Chuck to a degree, you know? Oh, Chuck's not

Steve:

feeling stuff. Cool.

Leif:

Chuck's associates path.

Steve:

Yep. Oh, Chuck's sociopath. Yeah.

Leif:

Shocker. They've been very happy with Serita, and

Leif:

they're worried that her returning to New York

Leif:

City will just be her returning to the norm.

Steve:

Yeah. Yeah. Because even though I thought she was

Steve:

kind of an asshole in this episode, I don't think

Steve:

that she was intentionally an asshole. I think

Steve:

that it's just, yeah, we're gonna live together.

Steve:

That's what we do. Come on. And why wouldn't we?

Steve:

Yeah. Just kind of bullies her way into things.

Steve:

But I don't think she does it intentionally.

Leif:

And I agree she does it intentionally, but not

Leif:

maliciously.

Steve:

Not maliciously, but. And I agree that, uh. And I

Steve:

don't think that. I think that to Serena, it's

Steve:

like, oh, this is a logical step for us to do. And

Steve:

not bullying the way it actually is. You know, I

Steve:

don't think that she sees it as bullying, but it

Steve:

is. But I also concur that she had, uh, such a

Steve:

glow up at the end of season four. I'm a little

Steve:

nervous about her going back for season five.

Leif:

And finally, Chuck and Dan. Please, sir. Uh, can I

Leif:

have some more?

Steve:

Yes. Yeah. They're great together. They really

Steve:

are.

Leif:

They Duck, duck, duck.

Steve:

We're shipping duck now.

Leif:

That is it for this week in Phantom. Though,

Leif:

Moving into episode grades, it is my week to go

Leif:

first. Like we've been saying, very average

Leif:

episode. Only kind of highlight is that final

Leif:

scene with Dan and Blair. Ah. Uh. And the Chuck

Leif:

and Dan stuff as well. So I ended up with a C

Leif:

plus.

Steve:

Yeah, I gave it a solid C for the same reasons.

Steve:

The Chuck and Dan stuff was good. The ending and

Steve:

that last scene with Dan and Blair is good.

Steve:

There's a couple other pieces peppered in that I

Steve:

was like, okay, but for the most part, solid C.

Leif:

Moving over to Stockwatch. Going up. I had Dan

Leif:

because he was a good friend to everyone. Blair

Leif:

and Chuck, uh, Nate because he got laid again. And

Leif:

he looks like he's Got a job.

Steve:

Yeah. Doesn't know he's getting played.

Leif:

I had Louie going up because he was not putting up

Leif:

with his sister's nonsense and he was defending

Leif:

his fiance. So good for him.

Steve:

Mhm.

Leif:

I had Diana going up because she also got laid and

Leif:

it looks like her scheme is going to plan. She's

Leif:

roping that Nate in with her honey potato. I had

Leif:

Dorota going up because she had, uh, someone a

Leif:

pregnancy bond with, and she's walking a very fine

Leif:

line. But right now she just got that trust fund.

Leif:

So I got Ivy going up. Who do you got going up?

Steve:

Uh, I also had Dan. Same thing. Good friend.

Steve:

Especially good friend to Blair and Chuck. I also

Steve:

had Nate going up for being clueless as he's

Steve:

getting played. He's getting the sex and job. I

Steve:

can't be mad at that. I also had pain. Uh, what's

Steve:

her name?

Leif:

Diana.

Steve:

Diana Payne. Going up. Uh, again, she's running a

Steve:

scheme. I don't know what it is, but it's working.

Steve:

So good job with that. I had. I, um, think that

Steve:

might be. I didn't give Louie an up. I get where

Steve:

you're coming from, but I also. I didn't give it

Steve:

to him. I am going to give it. Give the up to

Steve:

Beatrice though, because I do feel like her

Steve:

scheme. Well. Nah, never mind. Oh, but I'll give

Steve:

it to the priest because, you know, he pulled one

Steve:

over on everyone and got to be a bad priest for

Steve:

me.

Leif:

Going down. I had Chuck because he feels nothing.

Leif:

I had Vanessa going down because she was mentioned

Leif:

and sucks. I had Beatrice going down because her

Leif:

scheme kind of failed and she didn't get anywhere.

Leif:

And then I also had the disappointed woman leaving

Leif:

Nate's room. Going down. Uh, she didn't get

Leif:

nothing out of that. Who do you have going?

Steve:

At least Nate could have gone down. So I am going

Steve:

to send Chuck down again like you said, for not

Steve:

feeling anything and just being kind of in a bad

Steve:

plot. Stuck in a bad plot line right now. I. I did

Steve:

not. I'm not going to give Beatrix a down. I feel

Steve:

like she ended on a, uh, on a neutral for me

Steve:

because, yes, the scheme didn't quite work out,

Steve:

but I feel like she is still trying to find her

Steve:

scheme. That. That was just sort of grasping at

Steve:

straws, but she's looking for something deeper, so

Steve:

I don't. I was. I'm just going to leave her

Steve:

neutral on that. Oh, the realtor, who, instead of

Steve:

calling Charlie when the check bounced, called

Steve:

Serena to let her know the check bounced. So I'm

Steve:

going to end up on my spreadsheet putting her into

Steve:

the assistance column. But the realtor kind of

Steve:

fucked Ivy on that. So I'm going to send her down

Steve:

and I think that's it for me. But here's the best

Steve:

outfits from the last episode we've seen.

Leif:

Moving over to best outfits for me, I had

Leif:

Beatrice's striped purple dress from Ms.

Steve:

Sunny. Yep. Yeah, there wasn't a lot to choose

Steve:

from this episode and it was kind of between that

Steve:

and Blair, but I really felt like she had head to

Steve:

toe, had a better look.

Leif:

That is it for segments. Do you have anything you

Leif:

would like to plug?

Steve:

I will say I just started reading, uh, the

Steve:

audiobook of dungeon crawler Carl. Not sure if

Steve:

you've heard of it. It is a comedy book about the

Steve:

post apocalyptic. Basically Earth is turned into a

Steve:

giant dungeon and this random guy is trying to

Steve:

make his way through it. The audiobook is read by

Steve:

Jeff Hayes, I think his name is. And his cadence

Steve:

and tone sounds like Patrick Warburton and H. John

Steve:

Benjamin had a baby and a baby voice and that's

Steve:

the voice that is narrating this and it is

Steve:

perfect. It is just so well done and really

Steve:

captures the, the humorous tones and stuff like

Steve:

that. So I, I definitely, I'm not done it. So

Steve:

maybe the ending sucks, but 16 chapters in. This

Steve:

is a really good read. Also you can find my

Leif:

I am going to give an anti plug I've heard for

Leif:

years you have to read Grant Morrison's new X Men

Leif:

run and I'm about 10 issues in and it's. It's

Leif:

okay.

Steve:

Is that the one from like the, the late 90s?

Leif:

No, uh, it's like 2014.

Steve:

Oh, okay. Oh, all right. That's a much newer but

Steve:

it's new. X Men is the title.

Leif:

Yeah. Not a fan.

Steve:

Yeah.

Season 5, Episode 3, the Jewel of Denial. I like

Leif:

that the episode description reads, nate must

Leif:

decide whether to cross moral lines. At Diana's

Leif:

request, Dan has figured out who is publishing his

Leif:

book. Serena and Charlie return to the Upper east

Leif:

side from California.

Steve:

All right, I I'm intrigued by some of that denial.

Leif:

Not just a river in Egypt.

Steve:

Yep.

But until next time, you know you love us.
